"This North Miami Haitian restaurant got its start in a home kitchen where the owner sold her amazingly good griot to Haitian expats hungry for a taste of home. Griot is one of Haiti’s national dishes and consists of chunks of pork marinated in a complex mix of spices called epis, slowly braised (sometimes overnight), and then quickly deep fried before serving. The end result is a mountain of fatty and lean pork pieces that are crunchy on the outside and super tender on the inside. Chez Madame John makes one of the best versions around and each order is made fresh. You can opt for the griot simple, which comes with a side of bannann peze and pikliz, or go for the griot complèt with a side of diri kole—a dish of beans and rice cooked together with cloves. Food Rundown Griot The griot is well worth the long wait time you’ll often encounter here. The fried pork chunks are perfectly crispy on the outside, and somehow both the lean and fatty pieces are fried to equal perfection. The seasoning is just spicy enough, and the crispy crust on each piece of griot gives way to unbelievably tender and juicy meat. This is one of the best examples of—not just griot—but pork in all of Miami. Akra These fritters are made from malanga, which tastes kind of like a mix of chestnuts and funky cheese. They’re seasoned with a spice blend that includes thyme, chiles, onions, and garlic before getting shaped into little fingers and dunked into hot oil. They’re crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. A dunk in the tangy pikliz slaw is highly recommended. Tassot Kabrit The tassot kabrit is a close second to the griot, which makes sense: it’s basically griot in goat form. The seasoning is very similar, too—savory and slightly spicy—but the meat is leaner and has a much deeper flavor than pork without being as gamey as lamb. As with all Madame John’s fried meats (collectively called fritay in Creole), a crisp outer shell conceals super tender, slowly braised meat." - Carlos C Olaechea

I don't know how the other dishes fair out but if you want to have a HEART ATTACK asap order LEGUME. Come on people is it necessary to put so much oil in a dish. The plastic bag before I got home oil from the container fell out. Oil in the plate that 's from me trying the drain as much oil out from the legume. Haitian wake up cook healthier meals

Every time I visit Miami I stop by this authentic Haitian restaurant and get my fix. The food is incredible and I usually order the fried goat. Only down side is that the menu is in kreyol and unless you know what you want in advance and in Kreyol it makes it hard to order if you don’t know what to order. The staff is not bilingual and only speak Kreyol. The food is made to order so there is always a long wait which is worth it but don’t stop by here if you’re in a rush. This is also a cash only place.

Great service, hooked me up even though they were closing. My only request is no MSG in the griot - it would have tasted perfect without it.

I had heard incredible things about this place and have been super intrigued especially because of the large Haitian community in Miami. All is to say, when I walked in I felt welcomed with open arms by other customers and the owner, Luna. This place is not fancy, but if taste and flavor is most important to you as it is for me, than this is a MUST TRY. I got the Stewed Turkey which was to die for. Luna also brought out a sample plate for me to try the fried Turkey which was out of this world. I can’t wait to come back soon!

The worst most disgusting place I've ever been to. Filthy woman. Rude and unwelcoming. Asked if I could afford $20 for her dirty queue boef...(oxtail). I almost vomited when I ate the food. Do NOT go to this restaurant. There are many many options for great Haitian food. Smelly filthy woman and restuarant. Imbecile

Try to support my Haitians , but the old lady in the front is too darn rude. First time there and was asking questions and she had an attitude like we wasn’t supposed to ask questions . The menu is a poster board with sharpie on it , but they get mad when people ask questions. Y’all gotta do better . Not spending my money in such a place that Has toxic energy If I had the choice to give zero stars I would .

Google
The customer service is horrible!!! This is the first and last time I’ll ever give my money to this business. The lady at the front gets offended and disrespectful if you ask if the griot was recently made and/or fresh. Helloooo if I’m paying my money it better be fresh! Nobody wants hard, day old food. If you don’t mind giving your hard earned money to rude employees, then give them a try. But for me, customer service is everything and it’s below standard here.

We were apprehensive about ordering here due to the reviews. I’m glad we took the chance and experienced for ourselves. The food was very good. I ordered beforehand to minimize the wait time. Ample food was provided for $15. Both the hubby and I ate from one plate. In addition to bannan, the plate included patâte. Overall good experience. Will be back.

Yelp
Great food. Absolutely crappy service. I come only far and few in between because it really is some of the best griot I've had. But man, they act like they really don't care about making money. They use to take call ahead orders fine, now you can call a hour ahead and they will not even start on it until you get there. I've been on and off coming here for years now. Years ago the person at the counter was extremely rude but the one now is actually cordial. Basically, great food. If you decide to come, have really low expectations for everything else.

Yelp
Wow!!! This is absolutely my favorite place EVER to get the BEST griot( Haitian style fried pork chunks)! 5 stars on flavor for sure! I've been getting griot from this family since she use to sell plates from her home in north miami. I remember rows of cars lined up just waiting to take a plate home. My mother would tell me this was authentic to the bone, made her feel like she was back home. As I got older (and got a driver's license) I found out she still existed and moved to this building. It's no where near desirable looking or in the best neighborhood but I think some of the best places to eat in the world are "mom and pops" home cooked places. And this neighborhood is starting to become more artsy with shops, boutiques and galleries close by. Inside is plain. Floors looked clean, couple of tables and chairs, and long wide counter for ordering and a flat screen TV as you wait (trust me whether you call or walk in to order your waiting). The menu is on a simple blackboard but I already know what I want. I've come with over an hour drive just for a griot complete plate. This means it comes with rice and beans, salad, fried banana, and griot. And let's not forget inside has a side of gravy and the most important Haitian ingredient to all food...our famous "hot sauce" PIKLIZ. I'm sure every Haitian person in their family has someone who makes it,makes it themselves, or knows exactly where to get it( my aunt has one older then 10 years, the longer it sits there the stronger it gets). The smell alone makes me drool. My mother will only eat griot from this place. I've tried tricking her but all she has to do is smell the bag and she's like nope, not it. Even though griot is my favorite plate to get from here there are also other options. If you like goat or cabrit, you can get it fried or in sauce (think like a creole sauce) same with chicken, turkey (try the fried turkey it's also delicious) there's soup with dumplings, veggies, and meat ( we call it Bouillon)there's meatballs, fish, and legume which is made of eggplant( I don't like eggplant but I can eat this all day) and usually comes with meat and sometimes crab, trust me it's delicious. There's also mais moulin which is cornmeal or polenta with beans that's usually a breakfast meal but hey be dangerous and eat it for lunch or dinner. And don't forget the whole fried snapper that's always on point!!!!! I mean I can go and on. Look if you have an open mind and aren't scared of flavor and some spice, TRY HAITIAN FOOD!

Yelp
I went to the restaurant and I think that was the owner herself she did not great me at all and she was just folding spoons and knives with her hands touching the part that goes in people mouth all this while I'm standing there without no acknowledgement from her,so I was like fuck it I'm already here and really hungry. She finally looked at us me and my son asked you guys ready? Just like that so I proceeded to ordered one legumes with white rice, black beans sauce for my son a beef Kalaloo with the white rice black beans sauce and a spinach with rice and beans for my daughter let me tell y'all the food is horrible and trust me I'm Haitian so I know how our delicious food supposed to looks like and taste like, she's not representing our cuisines the right way at all.The restaurant is dirty and I can tell they are not up to code and when I asked her why I only get three small pieces of meat in my kalaloo she told me that that's how the owner which was her told them to served it.Chez madame John is the worst Haitian restaurant in north Miami and I will bet money on it. I will attach the failed attempt to make Haitian food pictures now.Oh did I mentioned she told me not to come back to her restaurant after I told her the place and the food are nasty!!like I was ever going back please code enforcement will visit her pretty soon..

Yelp
TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE . The owner or whatever she is that takes the order is Beyond rude . Food is too expensive to give customers attitude and incorrect order time . You call and order ahead, she'll tell you 30 min, you go an hour later and the food is still not ready . Then she gives you attitude like she's not wasting your time . I'm also very sure that this place will fail a safety inspection. I rather take my business to China Hut!

Yelp
Wow! This was my first time trying Haitian food. I took my husband, and we ordered for a total of four people, taking the food to go. The portions are generous. We had the griot. It was amazing. Everyone who tried it was impressed. Crispy on the outside, nice chunks of fat, tender meat, and well seasoned. We also had the fried chicken, which was very good. It reminded me a bit of a confit. It was not like American fried chicken. The seasoning was good, and the meat cleanly came off the bone. While the chicken was good, the griot was the crowd favorite. I loved the pikliz. Everyone else thought it was too spicy, but to me it was amazing and added great acid and heat to the pork. I would definitely return and recommend this place to my friends.

Yelp
This place may not be much to look at, the service may lack sometimes depending on who you interact with but the food? Jezuzzzz, the food continues to be on point and the most authentic! I find that many people get intimidated when it comes to Haitian restaurants as they may not understand the menu or fear a black lash of not being able to speak Creole... Well I have visited this location many times and have not encountered an issue (speaking english), I do however make sure that I know what I want before coming into a restaurant where the food is foreign to me! This location sits in the heart of North Miami and there are soooo many options in the area for this type of cuisine but the main difference is that this restaurant always serves up the best! Upon driving up, it almost looks like a little house in blue color next to a subway, it has its own parking lot and the area is safe. I must say that some years ago, the inside was somewhat of a wreck but that has now changed... They have new tables and chairs, the flooring and ceiling were updated and there is a TV attached to the back wall which usually has a movie playing or local TV for your enjoyment as you wait for your to go or if you choose to stay and dine! The Food... Boulet (boo let) are Haitian style stewed meatballs and are friggin delicious! I believe you are given four in quantity but trust me they are big in size, they also sit in a savory sauce with onions and are served with a side of rice (your choice of white or red beans) and fried plantain! The meatballs are made of beef and have a slight crispiness, every ounce of beef is seasoned to the sky and keeps you wanting more in every bite. The sauce compliments the rice as it has just the right amount of spice! Poule (Pool eh) en sauce is stewed chicken. This dish is similar to the above dish I mentioned but instead of meatballs its chicken, not fried but simmered and stewed into a mild red Haitian sauce with onions! You get a lot of chicken and it's typically breast pieces! I also typically remove the chicken skin as it's not crispy. Griot (Gree OL) are fried pork chunks which typically the most favorite dish to get, these chunks are are marinated overnight and fried upon you ordering it! There always crispy on the outside but oh so nice, tender and juicy once you bite into it. If you have not tried this yet or even if you have then you are due for some enjoyment! Diri Kole (Dee We Co Lay) is red beans and rice and/or Diri Blanc (Dee We Bluh) which is white rice. This is usually automatically given to you with your dish and please don't mistake this for just some boiled up rice with salt, no no, this rice is boiled with various seasonings and once completed so will be able to eat the rice alone as its that good! I typically call my order in advance as sometimes the wait can be too much as this restaurant has become a staple in the area, please note that they only accept cash (I know I'm rolling my eyes too folks). Overall it's a great place to get Haitian food and at its best... Don't hesitate on giving it a try and just do it!

Yelp
When you run an establishment that has to do with people, the first thing you must learn is customer service, and the lady who takes the calls and serves the food lacks that. I addressed her about it, and she has the nerve to say, "that's how I am". BABEEEE, if that's the case, QUIT NOW! No matter how good the food is, your business will not flourish.

Serious F.

Yelp
This place has the best griot I know. Introduced to me by a friend years ago and the griot has remand as delicious as it was when I first had it. I don't get to enjoy it very often since I do not live or work anywhere near their location but when I do get to heaven it blows every other griot I've had all of the water. The prices are right and I would recommend it to anyone I just have to figure out a way to get there more often.

Yelp
I can't believe I'd gone this long without having Haitian food. I was missing out. So I met up with a friend this week and decided to remedy the situation. He suggested Madame John's and he was right on point. This place was as authentic as they come. Small and quiet this place was perfect for lunch. Since it was my first time I wanted to try the griot but that's only available after 3 p.m. Upon learning that my friend suggested the goat. I had the goat, a legumes veggie dish, red beans and rice, and boiled plantain. Oh and of course the champagne soda, which reminded by a sugary drink I might have had as a kid at a bbq. The goat was good and just spicy enough were it added flavor without hurting the meal. However, please note I have zero spice tolerance, so this was probably extremely mild for the rest of you. I'm actually looking forward to trying more Haitian food and will definitely be coming back to this place and adding some others. Please keep in mind they only accept cash, so stop by the ATM before arriving.

Caro F.

Yelp
The lady behind the counter lacks customer service skills and needs to be trained on how to deal with customers, and the Cash Only sign on the wall is so deceiving. The food was mediocre at best and I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Sybill S.

Yelp
Avoid this place at all costs!! Just seen it on local 10 news "dirty dining" & for the review saying that "the akra is the best" I guess their secret ingredient is rodent droppings!! No thank you.

Kathi C.

Yelp
A girlfriend recommended this place since I liked the Moca Cafe down the street. For what is essentially a take-out place, the oxtail was pretty expensive and came with a heaping amount of oily rice and beans. The plantains were good, but I really would enjoy some cabbage or some other vegetables to go with my dish. What turned me off was when I tried to drop some cash into the Haiti Relief Fund box, the lady working the counter took it from me and kept it. What's up with that?

Natasha S.

Yelp
When looking at this place you have to apply a sort of "crazy/ hot " scale. The "crazy/ hot" scale is traditionally used to determine how much you are willing to put up with in relation with how attractive you find the person. Translated into restaurants this is: how good the food has to be for you to put up with unprofessional service and general inconvenience. THE FOOD IS THAT GOOD. Let me repeat THE FOOD IS THAT GOOD You don't come here for the service or the ambiance. Your best bet is to take the food to go and enjoy every morsel in your home. Yes the menu is in creole but if you hang in there, with enough patience, you will be able to order. Now to the food The oxtail has just the right amount of kick and consistency where it is tender but not overly so where you end up searching for the dissolved meat in the stew. The sauce only gets better when you combine it with their rice and beans. The griot, fried pork, is incredible and the way it is cooked does not dry it out during the frying process. The fried beef and the goat are also excellent. There truly isn't a wrong move when choosing the food. This restaurant started decades ago out of a house in little haiti where families would pull up to their driveway, go up to their kitchen window, order what they wanted and then proceed to wait 40 mins in their cars. Dont be intimidated by the humble locale or the standoffish service and be flexible with your expectations. The food will more than make up for it. BTW: Cash only

Yelp
Literaly the worst Haitian Restaurant in miami. Their foods are so dry and the place is dirty. One time i saw roaches crawling on the wall...Pleaseeee!!! Do not eat there, nasty, nasty, disgusting!!!!

Norman J.

Yelp
Do not go here. These people are very very rude. Don't waste your time. The food does take time to cook do not come if your in a rush. The girl was so nasty to me I didn't even wait to place an order. Your speaking to her and she doesn't even listen to the customer. There's another great restaurant right down the street within walking distance do yourself the favor save your money from this dirty place and don't come here to eat. You'll thank me later.

Melli B.

Yelp
READ THIS IN IT'S ENTIRETY! It's a dumpy, ugly place on the inside and the outside. I have been here for take-out 3 or 4 times and I think the food is pretty good. They are consistent with the flavors so no surprises here. I've ordered the Turkey Tassot Complet as well as the Griot Complet (means it comes with rice and beans vs only rice, salad, and green plantain). Each time that i've come here, the woman working behind the counter has an attitude. I am black american and I do not speak creole. First off, the menu is only in creole with no english explanation so I didn't really know what to ask for. As soon as she realized that I wasn't Haitian, she actually slammed her order-taking pen on the counter and rolled her eyes and walked away in exasperation and began to help someone else. A female patron witnessed this and asked me if the lady had just walked away from me. I told her yes but I didn't understand why. She began angrily speaking with the woman behind the counter in creole and then asked me if she could help me to tell the woman what I wanted. I told her what I wanted and she translated for me. After she helped me, she told me that they always have bad attitudes here and that if the food were not so good, she would not return. After my food was ready, the woman behind the counter bagged it up for me and said in very clear english, "Eight Dollars! Would you like anything to drink?" I don't know if that's the only thing she knows in english but it came out pretty clear to me. She refused to look at me and seemed to be very friendly to the male patrons. Well let me just say that this place is very out of the way from my home and it's good but not good enough to deal with being mistreated because I don't speak creole so I won't be back ever again. 1 star for good food but the service is the worst ever!! EVEEERRRR!!

Creator A.

Yelp
Decent ,not the best place to go and eat ,sometimes the food taste good sometimes it tastes nasty , inside of the place look dirty ,they definitely need to decorate and clean the place every day ,at least mop the floor.

Adam L.

Yelp
Fantastic local Haitain food. I dont eat goat because i had them as pets, but my friends say the goat taso is out of this world. BUT THIS IS MY REVIEW! I always choose the turkey taso or the griot. Both are phenomenal. Their pikliz is on par with the best. I honestly put this as one of the top Haitain restaurants in Miami. Their service is pushing them down a star, but the food is always amazing.

Bennett R.

Yelp
I live near this place, and highly recommend it for take out if you don't feel like cooking. The exterior looks sketchy, and the inside set up doesn't look any better. Just a few hard, straight backed wooden chairs with tables probably hammered together right where they sit today. Don't worry - just go to the counter and order. If you don't speak French or Creole you will probably be the only one, but don't let that stop you - the counter ladies have always been helpful. There is no English menu available, so if you don't know the cuisine, just ask. If you know latin food, hatian food will be familiar, but still different. Griot is probably my favorite - a much better version of fried pork chunks, served with beans and rice cooked together, tostones, salad, and the delicious, spicy sauce ti malice. (It came by that "malice" fairly - be warned!) The pork is first marinated, then moist cooked in a pressure cooker before flash frying, so its very flavorful, and never dry like the latin restaurant versions can be. Also very good is . . . well, everything on the menu. Next time you are in the area looking for take out, check it out!

Yelp
Yesterday, was my first time going to North Miami and was looking for something quick and fast. This place (Chez Madame Johns Restaurant) was the closest place that I can find before going to Subway. I did not eat there because the restaurant smell like I was walking into a bathroom. I was shock walking in there, that I step right back out. I thought this was a cruel joke someone was playing on me. It felt like I was walking into a large bathroom and was asks what I like to eat and I did not see the toilet to sit on. I could not be any disappointed than yesterday. This place in a need of a real Rehab.

Eloise N.

Yelp
Had the griot, it was great! You do need to go when you're not in a hurry because they seem to be very slow. We waited about 20 minutes for our order. The food is very well worth the wait though.

Clodiane G.

Yelp
They have best Acra. I don't know what kind of seasoning they use but the food is so delicious.

Ambi C.

Yelp
well i think the food is okay but the customer service is terrible! im american but my husband is haitian and one day i went there for some food my husband was not with me and i was asking the lady about some food because the menu is in creole and i guess she got tired of me asking her about the menu and smacked her lips and asked the lady behind me what she wanted to order i felt soooo disrespected and i raised hell she pissed me off, i asked for the manager and guess what, she was the manager , believe me i told her about herself, with an attitude like that she will drive customers away, she's lucky with her smart mouth she hasn't been smacked yet, but trust me one day she will get it! so i think if you have a buisness customers number 1 and someone need to let her know that because she dont know anything about customer service...

Jv V.

Yelp
I leave in chicago and everytime i come to miami i make it a must to stop by and get me some good haitian food. The food is good as always. I give it a 3 star because the place is always dirty and smell bad. I never eat there i alway take my food to-go because of that.
