The 10 Best West African Restaurants In Houston

"The Alief restaurant Chez Michelle feels like attending an intimate concert that happens to serve stellar Cameroonian food. Loungy leather couches line the walls, facing a huge performance space on the side of the room. Even though the live Cameroonian music is a weekend-only event, the food—like smoky drum fish covered in crisp onions—is a showstopper every day of the week. And adding an Orijin beer will have you acting like a regular on your first visit. Since Chez Michelle is open until midnight daily, this makes for the perfect late-night spot when you need a bowl of warm ndole soup with fresh shrimp to finish off your night." - gianni greene

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Chez Michelle and I must say it was an absolute delight. The food was perfectly flavored, with each dish showcasing the culinary expertise of the chefs specialy my fish. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. The ambiance of the restaurant transported me to Cameroon, with its vibrant decor and warm atmosphere. Chez Michelle is definitely a restaurant that I will remember fondly, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.

Google
Not sure about the atmosphere as I always order online but my oh my... Not sure if they changed their chef but their "poisson braisé.. mm mm mmm... The best I've had in Houston. Keep up the good work guys. I'm tempted to order a second round today but I'm watching my height lol.

Google
Their Galveston Tilapia is a grilled well-sized fish that is seasoned well. My wife had the okra soup & she enjoyed it. Great food at an amazing establishment!

I came here with my family and we had a great time. Linda's Ndole tastes really good and Henry's service was awesome. We will definately be back here.

I am giving this place 2stars because of the horrible customer service. 5 times that I have been here the service that I've receuved is tremendously slow and aside from Linda, no one will even greet you or wait on you..unless you wave them over to your table. Well the tall tall lady only smiles when she is serving a table full of men...she gives them prompt service with a smile. My food on March 1st was horrible and undercooked fish with overcooked scorched unseasoned jallof rice AND hard plantain. I gave them 4 to 5 visits and with that...NO MORE. Also they advertise Oxtails but never have them and when they do, They have to cook them and you wait for 1.5hrs. Poor poor poor poor choice of place to eat. No music no menus....Never again...I would rather go to any of the other African restaurants.

Yelp
I love this place. I am thinking about going there anyone in the highway 6 area. They are not called the fish house for nothing. The grilled fish is amazing and comes with a personal side of plantains. Alright the plantains can be a sometimes in the harder sides depending on the time of day you go, the fish never disappoints. The vibe is lowkey, inside of a plaza but I usually take home, bc I can't eat it cute lol but the service is quick especially if doing a callin/pickup. Oh yes and the suya is very good, I love getting extra onions. Best thing, they are open till around midnight

Yelp
African food I came to the food here it was absolutely amazing! I actually like how they put the spice on the side for those who may be sensitive to spicy food, which is not me, but good for those who want other people to try before they apply their spices. The service was also really nice. They were prompt, knowledgeable, and able to answer all questions. The ambience was fine as well. It was on a Sunday afternoon, with my mother and her friend, and it was very spacious. This was my second time coming here, and I would definitely come back. I ordered the Galveston tilapia, the $15 size, and it was more than enough, but I did finish it lol it came with plantain that was well fried, and I decided to get a side of Spinach again, and it was also also very big lol the portion sizes are awesome, and definitely worth a price.

Yelp
Chez Michelle is a casual restaurant/lounge type deal. Plenty seating in a Friday night. Service was fairly good, our waitress checked on us and was honest about what she didn't know (specifically, which spirits they served). My drum was delicious! Well-seasoned and large. The jollof was pretty good. Plantain wasn't my favorite. Is def recommend this spot for the fish. Pricing is questionable.

Yelp
When I am craving grilled fish, this is the place I go. The tilapia is flavored well and the dipping sauce is spicy the way I like it. The service is slow, but that's because it is made fresh.

Yelp
Yesterday I ordered my food at 6:30. I got there at 7:30. My food wasn't ready. I got to my house and open the plate. All I had was nothing but fat in my Nodole, and hard plantains in the other plate. Instead of taking it off the menu for the day, they rather make money by selling people fat instead of beef and hard plantains that's been sitting there since early in the morning that is a disservice to the community of people who love your food. I was very disappointed, and I travel all the way from North Carolina in hopes of having good Cameroonian food.

Yelp
The food was the best and I am very pleased to have been taken to the restaurant. The environment was pleasant and relaxing and made me feel like I was back in Nigeria. The wait for the food was worth it since the food tasted so refreshing.

Yelp
On Saturday during lunch time me and my brother went to lunch at CHEF Michelle restaurant and we ordered 2 grilled fish and the cook gave us old spoiled fish that fish looked very old and not fresh just cut fresh onions on top of the old spoiled fish we sent our plates back with the server and left very disappointed could have been food poisoning fish looked like they had it in the fridge for 3 weeks old and reheat it and they served it to customers highly not recommend and we will not be going there again horrible experience thank God we didn't get sick with food poisoning old spoiled fish I WOULDN'T GIVE THIS PLACE ONE STAR health department need to inspect that restaurant serving customer Old spoiled fish looked rotten

Yelp
The process to get my food after they gave it to someone else took a long time to resolve. When I finally recieved my order, it was missing my suya. Also did not receive any plantains one of my orders said it comes with that I selected. Extra stars for how delicious the tomato stew and jollof was, they are great at seasoning, but the oxtail was VERY tough, and would not come off the bone without tearing very hard at it.

Yelp
My first time being here and I absolutely love it. Being part Cameroonian, I really do not know much about the culture but the foooooood bangs! We Had Ndole with Oxtail with Plantain and Jollof Rice. It was actually an acquired taste but it in a good. The build up of the taste was amazing with the plantain so I'm definitely going back for seconds. My friend had the tilapia and he ate that right up so I'm guessing it was amazing. My guy ate it to the bone.

Yelp
PRICES ONLINE ARE FALSE. FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. Went to this restaurant to try for the first time, checked the prices online and asked to see a menu when I walked in. The guy handed me 2, the takeout menu and the "updated" menu. I see the same price of my intended order on both. Then he proceeds to tell me that the prices I'm looking at from 3 different menus (including online) are not correct because his system is going to charge more and I honestly did not understand that. He even tried to emphasize the updated menu but I saw no change in price as he was attempting to show. It was complete false advertisement. A major issue when trying to attract new customers. May they fix the issue. He didn't even seem concerned to apologize for the mix up. I walked right out.

Yelp
Very pleasant surprise off of Hwy 6. The place is big and may seem impersonal. But not at all. The staff is very nice. Young man waiting on us and mending the front (cash) area was very patient and professional. Although he was multi tasking, he never made us feel like we were annoying him with our various requests. Patrons seem to feel very at home when they get there. The food was excellent. The pepper they serve with the fish is a must try, even if one doesn't particularly like spicy food. It kicks the fish flavor up a couple notches. I will def recommended and come back. Good job to all the staff and I hope you stay just as great as well as your food quality.

Yelp
I'm all types of confused about this place. I came here with a friend around 930 last Saturday -- it was empty. We are dealing with the 'Rona, but my goodness there were literally two other tables occupied and the establishment is not small. This place has a good rating on Google and my friend had eaten there before, so I wasn't concerned. As to be expected at any African or Caribbean restaurant... they were rude upon entry. But this was extra rude. They literally mean mugged us and did not speak. The server just brought the menus and stood there and stared at us. We were not familiar with the items because we are not Cameroonian (though honestly everything isn't Cameroonian on the menu... Suya is definitely Nigerian) -- so we had questions. Our server was TERRIBLE with all of them. We asked what Capri was, he said "alcohol". NO ISH SHERLOCK-- IT'S ON THE ALCOHOL MENU?! He did say it was a Cameroonian drink though. (I didn't have good service and couldn't check). Why is Capri a liqueur (so should not have been given as a shot), ITALIAN not Cameroonian and DISGUSTING! After that, we got the Beef Suya as an appetizer, because safe. That was good. But oh dear, our entrees. My friend got the chicken and fries -- both were pretty bland in my opinion. He'd previously come for the whole Tilapia which he did say was very good. But my food?? I ordered the Ndole with Beef Oxtail and fried plantain. First, it was supposed to come with rice and that was never given to me. They gave me boiled plantain. Then, most importantly.... they gave me FISH not oxtail. I thought I was crazy at first, but we eventually discovered that our rude server wasn't actually that rude... he couldn't speak or understand English well. At ALL. He went and got the owner and she explained that they had him on the floor as a way to learn. WHAT? She then asked if I'd had the dish before which was neither here nor there because the point is I asked for oxtail and received fish! The fish version was not good. I'll never know if their oxtail or anything else is good, because I didn't want to order anything else after that ordeal and have no plans to ever return.

Yelp
Fantastic food! Everything taste great! I went with a friend that orders for me so I don't know the names. But the rips and fish were the bomb! Try the piment ! (hot stuff)

Yelp
Very yummy tasty african food! Most people come for the grilled fish and pepper sauce ! When I say pepper! I mean pepper lol! Get ready to have your month, nose and eyes running if you do not like or eat pepper ! Go really easy on it ! For me I love pepper ! I always ask for extra extra sauce lol I get like 3 little cups for my one whole fish ! Service is a bit slow sometimes! But am always with my larger family , so we just spend the time talking and drinking. You can also try the vegetables and okra soup . Yummy also ! They have live music some nights

Yelp
So I came here on a Sunday afternoon and ordered my food to go. I picked up my food and noticed it was cold and ask if they can warm it. They instead gave me a new food. I waited 10 min and they brought out a new food. I took it home and started to eat it. I noticed the fish tasted funny. Like it's didn't taste like the regular tilapia fish I have ordered. I mentioned to my husband it taste funny but continue to eat it. On Monday I noticed my stomach turning. I now went to toilet and had loose stools. Very loose the whole day. I'm not sure they prepared this fish well and am very disappointed. I have been in several times in past Ana never experienced this but now that I have I will no longer come here. If you noticed the food taste funny here throw it away and let them know. Cheers and happy holidays

Yelp
When you go here ask for Linda! She'll make sure you get what you need! I've eaten here for years and always feel like I'm back home! Service and all lol!

Yelp
Prob the best Suya i has in my life!! I had to wait for the server to attend to me but after they got to us it was smooth sailing from there. Def would recommend this place to anyone looking for some quality African eats.

Anruchi I.

Yelp
I love their tilapia pepper soup. It's only $12 and the tilapia is big and it comes with boiled plantain! The negative is that it takes too long for them to make it. This time it took them well over an hour to prepare the food. But it is delicious
google avatar

Yelp
Worst customer service!!!!!! employees all have attitudes when you ask questions. They take forever if you're picking up an order. My mom and I went to pick up an order my mother placed over the phone, grilled tilapia with fried plantain on Thursday night. We were being ignored several minutes by the owner/employees after she told them why she was there and she's being here longer then the customers who just walked in. We walked out. And the man ran to us near our car to give her order. The food is okay, and a little too greasy. But if you can tolerate the bad service enjoy

Yelp
So - decor is meh. The food- so I tried a fish dish and just hatEd it. Was almost Nigerian. Plenty of locals that visit here - so maybe it's just not my style . Never returned

Yelp
Amazing service from Linda. In the last i came and hated the customer service. But today i gave it another shot and was very impressed. I am excited to come back.

Ddjey D.

Yelp
African food. Variety of the menu. Better location too it's bigger you can sit and eat or order to go. Calling to place and order to pick does not always work so do not blame them for that lol Rather make time to go there... still try to call but hey haven't been able to get through. Anywho, some of the food is really spicy (the hot type) too so be aware!
google avatar

Kellen C.

Yelp
Would give 5 stars but service needs to improve eg greet each customer when they come in and not charge a dollar for extra peppa when folks order regularly over $20 worth of food. They have Great roasted whole fish, miondo, egusi, okra soup and other authentic WEST AFRICAN DISHES

Mercï 0.

Yelp
Came in today was seeking some grill fish and let me first by saying the fish came out hot and delicious. Cleanliness: Great Food: Good Customer service: Great
google avatar

Prince A.

Yelp
The staffs here are unprofessional... I don't know where she got them from. Only the oldest slim lady with black cap moving up and down to attend to customers. The rest of them were playing with their phones.

Elliott G.

Yelp
Great food horrible customer service , even if you call to order ahead they still take 45mins to an hour to make your plate . I typically order suya and jollaf rice and it always takes more than 30 mins for my order to be ready . I love their food but I hate having to wait so long especially if I call ahead .
google avatar

Christelle F.

Yelp
I love the food the only African restaurant I go to , every time I go there I always feel welcome. Today was a different story, I went there with my friends and the customer service was TRASH. The lady who took our order was so rude and had a nasty attitude. Very disappointing .
google avatar

Hanna V.

Yelp
I like this spot for their pepper, plantains and whole tilapia. I have to admit their suya is nasty tho, it's not your typical suya on a stick nor flavor it's chewy, thick pieces of meat .
google avatar

Mimi J.

Yelp
Their grilled fish is amazing!!! The bathroom is untidy and the restaurant dining area needs some improvement. But that's about it.
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Great service and the fish was on point. The sugar meat was tasty and price wasn't bad at all.

Lyde I.

Yelp
Great Soya or Suya depending on how you say it. I haven't found a better tasting Suya than what they serve here. Only thing I order. They have a fish and plantain dish they are known for as well. Service? They try. Lol.
