"From sloppy smash burgers to overflowing chilli cheese fries, Simon Jodoin-Bouchard has created a menu modelled on American-style diner grub. This “cantine urbaine” quickly became a favourite after opening in February 2021 and has undoubtedly managed to draw more than a few diners to the city’s east end." - Valerie Silva, Eater Staff

"Standing tall among the breed of new restaurant owners inspired by diner classics, this spot from Simon Jodoin-Bouchard and Alexandre Clément mainly focuses on burgers. Still, they have one hot dog up their sleeve: The Hot God, a house jalapeño-cheddar sausage served with fried onions, more jalapeños, queso, and a signature cayenne sauce." - JP Karwacki

From the first bite, it was clear why this dish comes highly recommended. The burger was expertly crafted with a perfectly seared patty, juicy and flavorful, nestled between a soft, toasted bun. The balance of ingredients was spot-on, enhancing the beef's natural flavors without overpowering them. The atmosphere of Chez Simon Cantine added to the overall experience, with its cozy and welcoming vibe, making it a perfect spot for both locals and tourists. The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring a memorable dining experience. For anyone looking for the best smash burger in Montreal, Chez Simon Cantine is a must-visit. Fun and relaxing atmosphere. Great staff. Had a bacon baconburger with a side of fries, my son had the cheeseburger poutine. Super delicious would recommend especially if you never had a smash burger.

Google
The best smash burger joint in Montreal! Service was efficient and fast. Prices were reasonable. The burgers were just hands down one of the best I've ever had, and I've been to lots of burger places in the States. I took the bacon one but would recommend any burger there. The poutines and fries were good but not as special as the burgers. And they also have a small selection of local beers. The only downside is that it closes at 8pm, would love to come by after a late night out

This place has got to be the best burger joint in the province of Quebec. The burgers and hotdogs are absolutely fantastic! Highly recommended.

Heard about this place and had to visit and oh boi... What a delight! Where to start, the service is excellent; quick, efficient and super friendly! The food... Wow! The smash burger is sooooo good. The crispy skirt of a perfectly smashed patty is to die for! The flavor combinations and the fresh condiments are excellent! Ohhh and I had to have the poutine.. yum! So packed with flavors with a gravy that coats so well the fries! And the cherry on top, everything is so well priced! They have all the elements and that explains the crowd that gathers as soon as they open!

Yelp
Found out about this place while browsing through the "Burger Quebec" facebook group. The owner posts beautiful mouthwatering photos of greasy burgers, poutines and cheesy fries on that group. So much so, I was thinking about it all week and had to check it out. We went around noon on a Saturday, luckily were able to find a spot to sit. This restaurant is very small and narrow, there are about 20 seated places, most of them at the bar. Better to grab and go as the atmosphere is noisy and cramped. We tried the "tit double" double cheeseburger, the chili burger, patty melt and sides of chili fries and "cantine" fries which had queso and big mac style sauce. Food is delicious, greasy, salty, well seasoned and fresh, fast to order and receive. The "tit" short for "petit" (small) double cheeseburger was definitely on the smaller side, for around $8.75 a decent price, but I was expecting something kind of monstrous and decadent by the photos. The burger is smaller than it looks compared to similar places. The fries are perfect for sharing. I noticed in Google reviews some people mentioned the fries were overdone, kind of burnt or crispy. I did notice this as well, however perhaps this is done for a reason. As most of their french fry dishes are covered in sauces, like poutine, chili, or queso, a slighter firmer crisper fry will hold its shape better and won't result in a soggy mess. Ideal for take out as you can still enjoy the texture of the potato minutes later. I would come back to try some of their other smash burgers but taking a star away for the location and comfort factor. There is only street parking, and such limited seating that you can't come in large groups or truly enjoy a sit down experience.

Yelp
Que dire de Chez Simon Cantine Urbaine. ?

Yelp
If you love burgers, there is absolutely no good reason for you not to try @chez_simon_cantine_urbaine. Just none. The award winning bacon + bacon burger is almost beyond compare. This exquisitely juicy hamburger topped with incredible homemade mustard sauce and bacon jam just melts in your mouth. Embraced by a moist potato roll and Canadian bacon this gorgeous outstanding example of the height of gourmet junk food is an essential meal for any real burger lover. Try it, please.

Yelp
Smash Burger: decent The patty is thin, the edges are crispy, the sauce is on the sweeter side and the pickles are sweet as well. It's a decent sweeter-tasting Smash Burger. It's overall a good small-medium sized burger but nothing too crazy. Poutine: very good The fries are perfectly cooked (lightly browned and still has that good starchy consistency). The sauce is very fancy; it's a light brown gravy with a very small hint of spiciness, and the main/most pronounced flavor is a herby oregano flavor. It's a very herby-tasting gravy. It's a poutine that I would expect to eat at a restaurant with a unique fancy gravy. The cheese is perfect, good decent size chunks that actually squeak. The people and service are welcoming. Overall, a very nice spot. If you're craving a well-made fancy poutine that's on the lighter side, with a burger on the side, definitely give it a shot.

Yelp
I was heading to my favorite poutine place in Sainte-Madeleine but they close early so I decide to give this place a try instead. I was close to tunnel so this place was 5 minutes away on my motorcycle. I ordered a poutine and a Smash burger. When you enter the place you know by the smell that's a great joint. Asked the waitress what's their popular burger and she recommends the Smash burger. I didn't hesitate and add a poutine with that. The burger is worth the detour on itself. Doesn't look like your regular cheese burger because of the flatted meat pad but when you bite in it you know it's completely something else. The sliced pickel really make the difference. As for the main reason I went there the poutine! I have to say the fries and cheese are on point. The sauce has a spicy taste and it was great but I find it a bit too salty at the end. I hope they have a different sauce I can try next time.

Yelp
Saw this place advertised on tiktok and decided to try it out. Small cute place. As you all know prices on everything have gone up. We had 2 regular burgers, a regular poutine, 1 soft drink and 1 bottle of water and it cost $30.00 The burgers were very good. The poutine did not have your typical gravy. It was a different sauce which was sweet. It wasent to my liking.
