The Best Bars in Quebec City | Eater Montreal

"This recently opened Saint-Sauveur joint serves street-style Vietnamese food alongside the kookiest cocktails in town. Owner and mixology master Vincent Thuaud blends alcohols, herbs, fruits and bitters in some rather ludicrous containers. Guaranteed fun times, especially for a late night." - Allison Van Rassel

My husband and I were visiting from Maine and had our anniversary dinner at Chez Tao. The atmosphere was fun, service was phenomenal, and it was the most delicious food we had while in Quebec! Our server (I wish I knew her name!) was wonderful about recommending drinks based on our preferences. We shared the vegan spring rolls, fried chicken, and pad thai, and all three were amazing- fresh and flavorful. I saw that many reviews mention not being able to make a reservation, but we were able to make a reservation online. The only downside was that parking was a bit of a challenge because they’re in the midst of digging up the entire road the restaurant is on, but don’t let that deter you!

C’est Magnifique!!!! We were in town visiting and were able to walk in on a Monday night around 8pm and get seats at the bar. They don’t take reservations, so if you want to come here, plan accordingly! We were recommended this place by a local who we spoke to. This was our best meal while visiting QC. In an unassuming spot, you’ll find amazing cocktails, great music, and incredible bites all under one roof. Not to mention, the service was great. Special shout out to Thomas who helped us! This is a rum-forward cocktail bar with an extensive menu. We had 3 cocktails altogether - the Meowth, Farang #2, and Hotel Corail. All were great with the bartenders paying special attention to all details, but the first two were our favorite. For food, we ordered Nems, fried chicken, pork bao buns, and the Khao soi curry. Everything was bursting with flavor. We could not pick our favorite and would order everything all over. The fried chicken is what they are known for and understandably so. It is a very generous portion and the chicken is so crispy delicious. It is slightly spicy, but not so much that any of the other spices are compromised. They have a special on Monday nights - unlimited fried chicken starting at 8:30 pm for $20. Would definitely come back for this. Ngl - I judged the bao buns based on what I’ve had previously and I seriously misjudged. While I’ve had buns before that are chewier, these were flaky and soaked in the sauces so so well. The pork was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The curry was so cozy and comforting. It was possibly the best I’ve ever had. It was so hard to stop eating it, despite being full already. It was absolutely perfect. We loved Chez Tao and we can’t wait to come back. Thank you for an incredible evening!

Had a great meal here. Had no trouble getting a seat at the bar on a Monday evening. The place was lively, but food and drinks came out quickly and were delicious. My server was friendly and attentive, walking me through the menu and offering helpful recs.

Google
What a fun way to end our stay in Quebec City! From the attentive and kind staff, to the savory and fresh bites, to the flavorful cocktails, Chez Tao was a "Wow!" experience and highlught of our travels!

Google
Pretty good, they hit the flavors in a safe way that won't overwhelm. If you like Thai/east asian dishes they know what they are doing. Lots of flavor bombs going on. Most dishes are fairly small and can be shared. I think I would have like to be with more people to try more items before getting full! While a lot of these items' authentic versions would be on the spicy side , these are on the mild end of the spectrum. I suspect if you want some real spiciness you'd have to ask when you order.

It was quite late at night at around 23h00 when we craved some Asian food as we were walking around the Château, pulled Google, and found Chez Tao! that's fortunately closing at 01h00. There was construction going on during our visit, so the travel to reach the establishment was frustratingly exhausting, but as soon as we had sat down (parking was quite tricky) and our server (I'm sorry I didn't catch your name) took our order of Vegan Pad Thai and a Yuzu cocktail (I think it was!?), everything else didn't matter because the food and drink were ★★★★★! We had only ordered one for two people to share, and it was more than enough! We were left full and satisfied. We'll definitely visit again!

The atmosphere is great. The cocktails are awesome. The pork belly bao buns are delicious. Was my first time dining here with friends. We enjoyed it very much! I will definitely return.

Google
It was my first time here. I had heard good things about this place. They don’t take reservations so when we got there, it was so busy! We had to wait about 20 mins for a table, but were able to order a drink while we waited. The staff are very nice. Service was great. We ordered the fried chicken and the pulled pork bao buns. The food was really good. The only thing I would say is that the bao buns could have used more cabbage for a fresh crunch. The drinks were great. Overall, we had a great time. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Small, charming restaurant. The staff were all very nice and could speak English which was helpful. The drinks and food were all delicious.

Yelp
Mediocre Asian fusion menu. We got the taro fried spring roll, corn fritters, and beef lemongrass glass noodle salad. The taro spring roll was overly fried I could barely taste any of the fillings. I feel like I was just eating grease and dough. I actually picked out the filling just to see how much they use and it was 30% filling. The corn fritter was good but nothing special. The lemongrass salad with beef was gross... glass noodle was served warm paired with other cold items? I wasn't a big fan of the combination and sauce. The strange mix of temperature in the dish made it even more unappetizing. They also put an overwhelming amount of cilantro. They have creative selections of cocktails that are served in fun cup designs (pandas, geishas, buddhas, etc.) Maybe this is more of a fun place to go for drinks with friends. I wouldn't come here for their food.

Yelp
Impressive Thai restaurant with some local of Thailand style of decoration and dishes. Somehow the cocktail has Chinese influence style. Tao is Chinese , so I guess the owner just like Asian style so this place has lots of mix Asian stuff but for the food mostly more Thai in their menu. Taste of food is fine. They do a good job in a middle of city that hard to find authentic ingredient. Bartender is friendly and also does great job with drinks. If you drive, there is a parking area nearby but you can only stay for hour then you need to move the car.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! Being from New York, we had no expectation of other cuisine than French. However, this Asian cuisine bar has so many different cocktails and great foods. Every cocktails has their own glassware which was super cool! It was our most memorable experience during Quebec trip because of their hospitality. Entire staffs were very kind and welcomed us especially Kevin, the bartender was very knowledgeable and loves what he does. He totally made our night super special. Surprisingly their foods were really good and authentic that we ended up ordered 2 more dishes lol. They open pretty late compared to other restaurants so if you are looking for a great drinks or craving some delicious foods, give it a try (You won't regret it) I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Best meal we had in Canada. Best meal we have had in years. Staff was super friendly. We recommend sitting outside as the inside is a bit dark and tight. Recommend the steamed buns, the marinated steak under "fresh" (if you like the taste of ceviche).

Yelp
Five stars? Yeah. That's right. I said it. Best meal I've had in Canada or New York in a long time. Some traditional flavors amped up with some elegant risks taken by the chef and the whole crew. Sometimes there was no sauce -just the right spices so you could taste the vegetables in all their glory. Or the sliced beef with glass noodles cooked as a ceviche in lime with plenty of cilantro-- that one just sang. Great service. Super fresh beer. Price is right!

Yelp
Interesting take on Asian food. The pork on the Bao pork was good. I wished they used Bao bun instead or regular buns. Still good.

Yelp
I loved it here! We sat at the bar and had amazing service from the super nice bartender. Really fun drinks and great food!! I loved the vegan pad see ew and jackfruit bun. I would definitely go back!

Yelp
Having been to Koh Tao, we had to check this place out. What an incredible place! Food is delicious. Drinks are fun and served in different glasses for each one. Servers/bartenders are super nice. Cannot recommend this enough!

Yelp
Cozy spot with great feel. Away from the tourists, the food, drink, and service all top notch. And get the fried chicken. I said, get the fried chicken. Get other great things too....

Yelp
To start, the vibe of the restaurant was very fun and hipster. The music in some areas is relatively loud, but that is to be expected of a bar. Similar to a split between a tiki bar and a speakeasy. The food we got was excellent. We started with the Fried Chicken, the Pork Buns, and the Tod Man Moo. The fried chicken was the best of the three, and was absolutely excellent. The pork buns were also really good, and much larger than expected! The toppings only added to the already flavorful pork. As shown in the pictures, the entrees we got were the Khao Soi, the Pan See Ew, and the Pad Kra Pao Moo. The Khao Soi was good, but was even better with the house made hot sauce. The Pan See Ew was excellent, and the people I was with raved about the meat in the Pad Kra Pao Moo. Our waitress was very nice, and gave excellent recommendations for both drinks and food! They can also make virgin versions of some of their specialty drinks (like a pina colada) for children/younger attendees, or anyone who doesn't drink! Overall was absolutely amazing, and a great surprise find!

Yelp
Amazing vegan food. We ordered Cauliflower fritters, Bibimbap and Spaghetti Riggattoni. The vibe was chic and the food was totally upto the mark.

Yelp
Not at all what I expected based on all the 5 star reviews. The atmosphere was like a dive bar and the music was super loud rap (which wasn't my scene). The service was good - they didn't have an English menu but they were happy to translate for us. The food was ok - again not what I was expecting but good for the type of place it was. I didn't have any of the cocktails but they did look good and I got the feeling that's what people go there for! Definitely better suited for if you're looking for a night out or as a last stop for cocktails and drunk food!

Yelp
4/10: The vibes were great. It's tucked on a street away from the hustle and bustle of tourists. But the quality of food and cocktails were average at best.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to wander into Chez Tao on a Sunday night in October. The drinks are expertly crafted and the service is impeccable. Everything to hope for in an establishment. We felt very welcomed as visitors to the city. The owner was bartending, and he is very talented and friendly. Highly recommend this bar to all tourists, especially if you are looking to get a glimpse of the real Quebec. We didn't get to try the food, though it looked good as well. And if the attention to detail and quality is anything like the cocktail menu, I'm sure it is delicious. Creative concept, well executed, great spot. Thanks for hosting us!

Yelp
As Asians, we were craving rice on our vacay in Quebec. This place did not disappoint. We got chicken with fried rice and pad thai, which were good. They also have pho but we didn't order that. I ordered the "happy buddha" drink and got a cute buddha cup with it.

Yelp
Friendly service combined with 60s/70s music (think Forest Gump soundtrack). Several vegan options to choose from on all areas of menu (salads, soups, and entrees). I thought the spice and flavoring on the pad thai was weak, but otherwise it was good. My favorite items were the cocktails, obviously!, and for the food, the Chinese broccoli and the vegan bao tao. FYI, they don't take reservations. We arrived earlier, around 6pm, on a Saturday night and were immediately seated.

Yelp
Street Food and cocktails!!! Cool local resto bar / speakeasy non pretentious. Situated in the "Basse ville" of Quebec City. The staff is amazing especially the owner Vincent welcomes every customer that comes in. Look out for their signature cocktails and if you're hungry they offer a great menu of traditional Vietnamese dishes. Bao, Pad Thai, spring rolls etc....prices are reasonable. Expect to hangout with the locals who are all very friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
Great cocktails! We had a variety and they were thoughtfully and accurately prepared Papaya salad, beef rice noodle dish, pho, pickled vegetables all well done. Highly recommend Very casual bar like atmosphere, don't over dress. Do attend.

Yelp
Excellent excellent food! This place is fantastic! The food is delicious! We had an amazing beef pho and vegetarian Pad Thai! It is open until 3 am and is full of young local people. Not expensive! The music is loud but we just loved it and the service was fantastic! The menu is in French so don't complain and use Google translate and ask questions.

Yelp
Very rude behavior and rowdy crowd. Horrible management. Don't go there. This business should go out. They support people who goes there to drink and improve their revenue. Food is good but would you go to a place where you are not respected as a customer? Think twice before supporting such businesses

Yelp
Came in looking for vegan Vietnamese options and found a busy place with a happy crowd, good music, friendly service, and fresh food served nicely. Had the bahn mi, papaya salad, and summer rolls. What a good find! They are super new and don't have a big sign so you might have trouble finding them behind the black curtains-- but being a bit underground makes it even better, like finding a speakeasy.
google avatar

Katharine B.

Yelp
Order the pork buns. You will not be disappointed. Drinks were also delicious! I had the Happy Buddha.

Yelp
This restaurant is a beautiful flavor experience in a land of butter and lard. The taste is fresh and beautiful with Asian inspired dishes. The music is a mixture of 90s hip hop, reggae and French pop. The owner/creator is seriously the nicest dude. Our spring rolls, crispy chicken, cabbage salad and papaya fritters were all 10/10. This place is a destination you should visit ASAP. Oh, and their cocktails are strong and beautiful!

Ladd R.

Yelp
In town for the week- by far the best bartender and waitstaff. The fried chicken is a must have. I strongly recommend letting the bartender decide your drink, or picking a house specialty. Affordable- night out for the wife and I was $100 with food and drinks. Absolutely on the must-visit list for foodies and drinks.

Yelp
Emeline was such a great bartender! Very attentive and the ambience was really awesome. Wish we didn't leave so soon :(

Yelp
If you want something off the beaten path from all the tourists this is the place. Great food, great service. The Nasi Goreng was delicious as was the Pad See Ew.

Carolyn L.

Yelp
Stayed at an Airbnb close-by and stumbled into this place one night. Feels more like a bar but don't let that deter you from getting food. Our selections were excellent: highly recommend the vegan bao buns, tofu pad see eew, fried mushrooms, and the drinks were creative and fun. I would recommend this place to anyone and hope to be back again!
