Out of a few remaining options for North African food in Marseille before I needed to leave, I chose this one based off a recommendation from a Tunisian friend, and my need to not eat too much before a large dinner that evening, knowing that Chez Yassine serves the street food peasant classic lablabi for quite a cheap price of 5 euros at its most basic.
Right off the Rue des Capucins, a very busy market street where countless people could flash by and depart with your cash unnoticed in an instant, it's in an inconvenient part for travelers of a relatively safe area of Marseille, but once I arrived inside I could breathe easier. This restaurant is almost open-air and could be comparable to a Vietnamese sandwich shop in Houston in terms of décor, prices and menu offerings. As much as I wanted to try ojja and some Tunisian salads, all I had room for was lablabi and the version with an egg absolutely did not disappoint, far exceeding my efforts to make it in my Houston kitchen. The broth is redolent with cumin and chili pepper, spiked with onions and cilantro, and rich with the chickpea liquid, and made smoother and less liquidy by adding the egg, and goes perfectly with the provided baguette.
The owner will strongly suggest you order a drink, and I would strongly suggest getting the housemade lemonade which is somewhat bitter but very easily drinkable.
If I came back again, with an emptier stomach, I'd try some of the other Tunisian specialties, but I do have confidence that Chez Yassine serves the best lablabi in town and I would eat it any time I needed a cheap snack like I did this day. Americans are unlucky enough not to be able to experience North African food easily and thus visitors to Marseille should explore this fascinating cuisine at every opportunity - unless eating bouillabaisse!
