"Whether you call them empanadas, patties, hand pies, or turnovers, they're fried pockets. And the most flavorful fried pockets in Miami come from Chez Katu. It’s a Haitian takeout spot in Miramar specializing in pate kode. OK, we know that Miramar isn’t exactly within the limits of Miami-Dade County. Still, if you’re in the northern reaches of Dade, it can be less of a pain to get to than Wynwood or South Beach. But even if Miramar is, like, super far, bro—Katu's one-of-a-kind pate kode are totally worth the drive. Chez Katu is only open from Thursday to Sunday, and loyal fans will drive from all corners of South Florida—and sometimes even further—to grab dozens of pate kode at a time. After all, it’s the only restaurant in the area solely and consistently dedicated to these handheld Haitian delicacies. Needless to say, the wait can be long, but only if you stop by unannounced. They have a user-friendly app for Android and iPhone, and using it to order ahead is the best way to avoid a long wait. You’ll get an alert when your food is ready to pick up. The crusts on these pate kode are crispy and slightly chewy like a good fried empanada, but the similarities with their close Latino relatives end there. For starters, pate kode are traditionally eaten for breakfast (although there’s no wrong time to eat one), and one pate is meant to be as satisfying as a plate of rice, beans, stew, and plantains. That means a typical Haitian pate kode is nearly twice the size of your average empanada, and Chez Katu overstuffs theirs. But what really makes Chez Katu’s pate kode stand out from other versions of stuffed dough pockets in South Florida is how much bold flavor is packed into each bite Start with the beef patty, for example. The ground beef is as saucy as picadillo and has a bright, tangy umami note from tomato paste and an assertive amount of garlic, along with onions, cloves, thyme, and scotch bonnet peppers—and those are just the seasonings we could identify. Katu also makes some other traditional Haitian breakfast pates, including salted cod (morue/bacalao) and an intense smoked herring (aransò) with hard-boiled egg. But the real draw here are the pate kode that break from tradition, like one featuring chopped griot and pikliz, a pepperoni pizza patty, and one stuffed with spicy Haitian makawoni graten (a.k.a. mac n’ cheese). Most patties and empanadas benefit from a little zhuzhing up—a squirt of lime, some hot sauce—but Katu’s don't need anything at all. However, make sure to drizzle a little sweet and spicy Katu sauce on your pate kode. Get extra. Like a lot extra, because you will be slathering this stuff on everything throughout the week. If you need even more heat, get a side of the hot, tart pikliz, which is one of our favorite versions in South Florida. This place is takeout only, and many people (including us) eat their pate kode in the car. Next time you have a crowd to feed, skip the pizza or the wings and pick up some Chez Katu. If only for a day, you’ll be the most popular person in Miami, even if you had to leave Miami to get them. Food Rundown Spinach And Cheese Pate This is the best creamy spinach filling we’ve had anywhere in South Florida, and we wish we could buy quart-sized tubs of it and eat it with a spoon while admiring the fringed shalwar kameez on the heroine in a 1970s disco-themed Lollywood scene that popped up on our YouTube feed. It includes several types of cheese, including parmesan and cream cheese for extra lusciousness. We really love the chopped sundried tomatoes, too, which add bright pops of flavor to the rich filling. Macaroni Gratine Pate If Katu sold the macaroni filling on its own, this would be a mainstay at all our holiday meals. It’s that good. It features several kinds of cheese, some spicy Haitian seasoning and veggies that balance out the richness, but you can also add a scoop of beef to cut through it (as pictured). If you can't eat them straight from the fryer, order these frozen so you can cook it at home. Griot And Pikliz Pate This is a Chez Katu original, and the griot is perfect. It has crispy and fatty bits along with juicy, tender bits of super flavorful pork. That gets chopped up like pulled pork and loaded into a pate crust along with a layer of spicy, tangy pikliz. A dip in the sweet Katu sauce turns this pate from perfect to sublime. Pizza Pate While pizza empanadas can be a gimmicky throwaway item at a lot of places, these patties can actually compete with real pizza. Katu brilliantly combines pepperoni slices and mozzarella cheese with a lightly sweet tomato sauce that gives all the right pizza flavors. Feel free to impress your snobby pizza purist friends by calling these pate kode alla pizzaiola." - Carlos C Olaechea

This is probably my third time visiting this place and the last two times I remember the food was delicious. Today, the food is not that great! I spent $27.Xx for three patties!!!! The food quality went down. The griot patty was disgusting, I only took one bite. The seafood patty was over seasoned and spic, especially the shrimp. Back then, the sauces took the Pattie’s to another level, now you need the sauce to be able to fully enjoy the patty. The owner had a great thing going when she first started.

Good Morning Chez Katu, I ordered 8 traditional pate kode and was surprised to find very little or no aranso inside. This isn't the first time this has happened. As a long-time customer, I've noticed a significant decline in the quality of the pates. If I'm paying for a product or service, I expect to receive it as advertised. Better quality control for your pates is necessary. Prices are raised but quality has declined. I’ve attached photos from 2021 vs 2024

I visited ChezKatu on 2 separate on occasions. The 1st time, I wanted to try a variety of patties. I ordered chicken, beef, cheese, and griot. They were made to order, which means they were hot and fresh. However, the pickup progress needs more work. I was inside when my order was ready, but I wasn't informed. There were no names or numbers being called. I understand they had an abundance of orders, but I had to keep checking with the pick-up window to see if my order was ready. My order ended up sitting on the counter. My favorite pate was the griot and pikliz. It was delicious. My least favorite was the cheese because it seemed empty compared to the other pates. On my second visit, I ordered the griot and pizza pate. The pizza pate was good, but the griot was overcooked and greasy. I literally received an envelope of grease, which was disappointing. I also tried the Haitian limeade. It was very tart.

I’ve been to the Pembroke Pines location, several times over the last couple of years, and never really had any issues. This time around, the paté was different. First, it seems they changed the recipe on their dough. I remember them being flakier, and crunchier. This time around, the crust is softer. Speaking of their dough, the pate used to be a lot larger. I bought four different pate: Moru, tassot tirki, beef, and salami/cheese. The morue was way too salty, as if they needed to soak it longer.. The turkey was very well seasoned and had a nice little spice to it. The beef was OK… My daughter really enjoyed it. The salami and cheese was also pretty good, though it could’ve used a little bit more salami, and less cheese. There katu sauce was quite a bit thicker than I remember it being, but flavors were still the same. Also purchased their mango passion juice. It was pretty good. Overall, it’s not as good as it used to be, but was still good.

I used to like Chez Katu idk what happened but they went downhill, I ordered online and I arrived at the store at the exact pickup up time , I was being asked to wait 20 minutes. 3 hours later I got my patties and I was missing some 😒 went back and waited another 10 minutes, got the patties and it was soaking in oil and the quality of the patties are not the same they used to be years ago , and they downsized the portion . They got that Keith Lee review and let it get over their head . Will not be back

I am OBSESSED with their Morue or Saltfish pates… I always order two with extra red sauce. They are so packed with fish and bursting with flavor. My mouth is watering thing about them. What I don’t like about them is that if you want to order ahead you have to use their app and I think they charge you more to order in the app. It’s kinda scammy but, I just order in person.

Listen, when I tell you this place is a must. I mean that 1000%. I had been following them on IG for a while and another Chef told me that it was super delish. So a couple of weeks ago, I decided to stop in since I was near the area. I ordered through the super convenient app by the way and it made my experience that much better. So I ordered three flavors (Griot, Pizza, and Seafood) of ones that I felt would be the most popular. When I arrived at my Airbnb I laid them out for a photo then I got busy! I ate the Griot one first and it had great flavor but to me it was okay. Then I tried the pizza one and it was like a hot pocket on steroids...it beat my tastebuds up 🤤🤤🤗! I was like sheesh that was powerful and then lastly I tried the seafood one.....LISTEN, that thang hit me and made me start sanging (not singing, sanging) and with every bite, I sang a different song! I was absolutely blown away by the depth of flavor it had. I jumped straight in the DMs of the owner and told them that I was very impressed and couldn't wait to get back down for more! This place is 5 out of 5 and will take you to flavortown.

I have patronized this business for at least the past 3 years. I refer friends and family, and it’s s tourist spot that I bring my visitors to. Over the course of the last year, I’ve noticed a decline in service and quality. Every time I order online and make it to the restaurant something I ordered is suddenly out of stock. This has happened the last 3 visits. I drive over 35 minutes to patronize this restaurant. This is unacceptable . My order wasn’t ready until 30 mins past specified today. Today’s visit, there was no more griot patties… the entire reason for my trip. The lady said she could give me fried griot instead. I took that. It was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever tried here. Very salty and no meat, just pork skin “fat”. To add insult to injury, I was given a soursap shake instead of mango. I waited at the smoothie counter 10+ minutes before it was acknowledged. The place wreaked with a strong urine like smell and looked really dirty. This is not how the place used to be. The music in the facility was entirely too loud, I could barely understand the nice lady due to our language barriers on top of the music. I gave 3 stars because I would never want to destroy the morale of a minority o owned business and I know the potential of this place. If it was based on today, I would give 0. Please do better!!!
