For Chicagoans, there isn't much tastier than an authentic Chicago hot dog or Italian beef sandwich. For those of us who have moved away, it's a treat to find these delicious reminders of home elsewhere. Anyone lucky enough to live in Denver can have the real thing! Chicago Style Beef and Dogs is authentic. The family lived in Chicago and they know what they're cooking here. If you are unfamiliar with what a "Chicago dog" is, let me describe it: Vienna beef hot dog on a poppyseed bun, loaded with tomatoes, sports peppers, onions, pickle, a neon green relish (which I personally skip), mustard, and topped with celery salt. This place does it perfectly. And Italian beef on a special Italian roll, order wet or dry, with peppers or giardiniera (or both). The spices in the beef is what makes it special. Again, this place gets it right! They have lots of other Chicago specialties: Fannie May chocolates, Jay's potato chips, Salerno butter cookies, these funny little tamales that I've only had in Chicago. And I've saved the best for the last - homemade Kolachky!!! A Polish pastry, kind of a cross between a cookie and a danish. The dough is what makes it unique. And this place has a baker - Denise - who makes them (thank you, Denise!). My favorite flavor is apricot, but they also come with either lemon, poppyseed, cherry, strawberry, plum, pineapple, or cheese. I want to send a big Thank You to the owner, Diane, who has carried on the legacy started by her Dad. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Call ahead to make sure they have Kolachky, so you are not disappointed. They sell out.
