The Best Fried Chicken Sandwiches In Chicago

"Unlike the super crunchy chicken at Brochu, Ms. T’s version is light, still crispy, and overall a bit more understated. The sandwich is made with two tenders on a hamburger bun and your choice of sauce - and you’re going to want the gold sauce. It’s like a thin mustard honey (in that order, not honey mustard) that’s more tangy than sweet, and a great complement to the lightly-seasoned breading. And if you don’t order a deep-fried, butter-infused biscuit too, we feel sorry for you." - adrian kane

Chicken Hut Review - Hillside Park - Durham - The Infatuation

"When you think of Southern food, you’re probably picturing the menu at Chicken Hut, one of the oldest restaurants in the city—they’ve been cooking soul food classics in a space that feels like a school cafeteria since 1957. The fried chicken is the best we’ve tried in town, but everything from the sweet tea and pound cake to chitterlings and pig’s feet is fantastic. They’re only open for lunch, so come here for a quick pit stop before a walk along the American Tobacco Trail. photo credit: Anna Barzin" - Eric Ginsburg

Google
I got take- out from the Chicken Hut. The staff are fast and friendly. I ordered a whole chicken and masked potatoes and gravy. It also came with a pita. I only waited maybe 1 min. They grill all the chicken right in front of you. It's very fresh. I got this so split with my husband. There was plenty of food for 2 or 3 people. The chicken was juicy and tasty. They sell Pepsi products. They offer diet and Pepsi Zero.

Google
Ordered Uber a whole chicken, with mashed potatoes and coleslaw! It came with two slices of pita bread. Everything is very good. First time ordering. Will purchase again.

Google
The food is quite good but I have had better whole chicken in other places. This one is not the best. But the quantity is huge and they provide a lot of salsa too. It comes with pita bread on the side.

Google
I didn’t expect chicken to blow me away—until I tried the honey-mustard glazed drumsticks a. Right off the bat, the smoky aroma hit me, and the skin was crazy crispy without being dry. One bite and the meat literally melted in my mouth, thanks to that perfect balance of sweet honey and tangy mustard. Our server even recommended a mint-lime iced tea, which cut through the richness like a charm. By the time I finished, I was kicking myself for not ordering a second helping. Homestyle Chicken turned a simple meal into an epic experience—definitely worth the trip if you’re a fellow chicken fan.

Google
ordered 3 times. Chicken delicious. Except the breast always dry. The sides very good but the potato salad very hard potatoes. Excellent service. Very quick.

Google
Always happy to taste their grilled chicken everytime we visit chicago area. My family came to know their place through my cousin in the year 2011 and since then, we keep coming back once in a while whenever we got a chance just like yesterday, we attended 2025 kidney walk and went there for lunch.Bought some carry out too for my grown up boys.😋

Google
Pulled up to Chicken Hut in Boystown and spent about $18 on a half‑chicken special, rice, coleslaw and a soda. The charbroiled bird was juicy and fresh, coleslaw 🔥, rice solid—but breast was a titch dry. Staff was super chill and quick. Cozy, no‑frills vibes—great spot for a quick feed. Would’ve been 5★ if the white meat was a little more saucy, but def worth rollin’ thru.

Google
The potato salad is delicious but they serve burned chicken and the value isn’t there anymore. They also overcharge vs what they have posted in front - they indicate a drink is included in that price but it is not.

Yelp
Some of the best chicken ive had! The seasoning is amazing and the skin is super crispy - I do prefer the darker meat pieces since they are more juicier. Their pita is addicting too! Great sides. Highly recommend eating there as it is steaming hot! Friendly staff. Definitely not a fancy place but thats how you know the food is gonna be good!

Yelp
Stopped by on a hot day. Got the half chicken with Cole slaw and a fountain drink. The salsa sauce was refreshing with the chicken. Next time I'll eat it with some hot sauce. The chicken was at a great price, perfect grilled bbq chicken, and addicting Cole slaw. What's there not to like! 12/10 would recommend. Go!!

Yelp
This spot is always a hit. I have been coming here since 2004 and the flavor has never changed. By far the best rotisserie chicken in Lakeview, Lincoln Park. Consistent fresh and delicious!!!

Yelp
Such a classic spot! I've been coming here since I was a kid. Simple, but perfect! Perfect meal of grilled fresh chicken, mash potatoes, and flatbread. Sides of salsa and BBQ are a must. Staff are kind and friendly! Definitely a hidden gem in the city. Chicago local approve!

Yelp
One time, walking up and down Broadway, we could not resist the smell of the grilled chicken out of this corner restaurant. We decided to walk in and order...the menu is pretty simple...whole chicken, half chicken, quarter chicken...then you pick your side....easy. The chicken was so delicious....the portion was large and the flavor profile of the marinate was right on point.... The place is like a diner, so it's no frills, very casual, almost what you see in Latin America. But the taste will have you come back...again and again....

Yelp
This place is everything! I've been coming here for 15 years. The chicken is always fresh. It's healthy. Service and takeout is always fast. Although you can sit and eat, it's more of a takeout venue.
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
Edited: my first experience here was fine but I got the worst food poisoning of my life the second time around... not returning. If you want to quickly lose five pounds then eat here.

Yelp
I was encouraged by all the great reviews but what I had tonight from the Chicken Hut wasn't great at all. I ordered the half chicken combo and while the dark meat pieces were fairly juicy, the white meat pieces were overcooked and terribly dry. Not enough seasoning on the chicken either. The rice side was just 'meh'. Even the Hawaiian Punch tasted watery. Very disappointed.

Yelp
My wife and I love this spot on the northwest corner of Belmont and Broadway. A very simple menu, but boy do they nail it. Roast chicken, flatbread, coleslaw, homemade salsa. All done very very well. Eat there or take it home. One of the great joys of living in Lakeview.
google avatar

Derrick C.

Yelp
I was confused if the chicken was grilled or fried. It was dry and they offered only one side with your half chicken plate. If you wanted another side, there would be an up-charge for the extra side. The chicken was burnt over and dry, wasn't really a fan. People did say the chicken was good so I gave them a try, but wasn't to my liking.

Yelp
Chicken Hut...WHAT?!?!?! I always kinda wanted to try this place because I figured if it has been open for so long on that busy corner, it must be good. But then I'd scare myself away. Finally ordered this weekend for delivery through Doordash (was feeling too lazy to walk a mile). The order arrived in under 15 minutes! The chicken was still piping hot when we opened it up. We got a half chicken, upgraded to all white meat (don't judge). It was two breasts and two wings, and MASSIVE ones at that. Plus rice and mashed potatoes and it came with a surprise salsa and pita. Confusing vibes but it all somehow works. Mashed potatoes weren't my favorite ever but I liked the rice. We were stuffed and sooo impressed. Definitely coming back here.

Yelp
There are a handful of grilled chicken restaurants like Chicken Hut across the city. They either have gas or charcoal grills. As you would expect, I'm partial to the charcoal option. Pollo Express in Pilsen is probably my favorite. Charcoal just imparts more flavor. Chicken Hut cooks Purdue chickens on gas grills. They do a great job with temps, but the chicken isn't seasoned well. There's enough salt, but they need a better spice mix. .. garlic maybe. ..even Adobo would be a major improvement. There's also something off about the oil they use for grilling. Orders are fulfilled quickly. Don't expect much from the pita or sides. Overall a reasonably priced option for a filling meal. 2.75 stars.

Yelp
Great food great prices great service thank you chicken hut you da best thanks excellent

Yelp
Best grilled chicken on Broadway. Eat in or takeout, fair price. Parking is tough, best to walk.

Dee A.

Yelp
Fresh sides and good chicken. You get what you pay for and it's definitely worth it for a food meal!

Al B.

Yelp
Best chicken in the state of Illinois. How they get the bread to taste so good. From the outside this place does not look like anything special but you have to go.
google avatar

Yelp
If you don't like it you're not eating it right. I recommend getting dark meat or just getting a whole chicken meal for two and then here's the crucial part. Lots of extra pita and extra salsas. Ya put the sauce on the pita with the chicken and you've got yourself the most delicious chicken-pita-salsa sandwich. Don't be shy with the salsa, that's why you ordered extra. I get 6 salsas total for a whole chicken and 4 pitas (1 or 2 automatically comes with). If you eat it in the restaurant the pita will have a little crisp, if not then it'll be soft but still good for the sandwich. The sides here never really mattered to me much but I usually get corn on the cob and mashed taters. Get what you like, but it's all about that chicken sandwich n that delicious red sauce.

Yelp
It's neat that you can see them cook the Chicken, it's also cool they provide pita bread, salsa and some version of potato's. The portion size is quite generous. I wasn't a fan of the taste and flavor though. The savory part is the skin but I could say that about chicken anywhere. The potato salad I had was devoid of flavor. The redeeming factor of this place was the salsa. I believe it was made using Chiles, by the texture and taste.
google avatar

George L.

Yelp
The chicken was somewhat dry but nice blend of seasoning and the coleslaw was maybe the best I've ever had. I was looking for chicken that was grilled; not fried, and without a lot of additives that you sometimes get with grocery store roasted chickens. I got the whole chicken and overall was pretty satisfied. So I've got to say this place delivered exactly what I wanted. In the future I'd stick with the legs and thighs though.

Yelp
I really hate to give them this review coz I love their chicken n sides....However earlier my gf ordered at 12ish pm to be deliver by 7:30pm....the order was for whole chicken with bunch of sides for delivery thru DoorDash! The delivery was great and place where they were told to leave by the door! And Have to say whenever we have eaten there the order is always correct! So in that case my gf did not check the order and left it in the bag since she was getting off work soon to drive home.... When she got home We were excited to preheat the chicken in my air fryer to my surprise wasn't a whole chicken but 4 legs and 4 thighs! WTF!!! Yes I like legs n gf like thighs but we want a whole chicken! Grant chicken was good but where's. My wings and breasts dammit!!!

Yelp
Guess what... chicken butt. Just kidding :) it's chicken hut. I love this place for the scrummy grilled chicken and sides. If I had to go back, I would get the cole slaw. The contrast between the hot juice chicken and creamy ice cold cabbage salad would likely be to die for. All around 5s

M L.

Yelp
Good basic chicken. We've walked by Chicken Hut many times and finally decided to order carryout. We got the 1/2 chicken with sides of coleslaw and potato salad. The chicken was exactly what it was supposed to be. Chicken. Could probably use a little salt. The sides were nothing to write home about. Next time we will try the mashed potatoes. I sometimes like basic chicken without a lot of sauces. I generally prefer smoked chicken from a local BBQ place, but it is twice the price. Nice to get simple grilled chicken for a good price.
google avatar

Sasa K.

Yelp
Best Chicken in the city!!! Homemade Salsa & Pita make great snack too! Get a whole chicken, you will eat it. Dont kid yourself.
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
Super good chicken with the same bbq sauce as Harold's. Like a healthier version of Harold's, as it is grilled, not fried.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
The chicken and mashed potatoes were amazing. The portion of chicken was great for the price and the pita bread was a nice surprise in my delivery order.
google avatar

Judith G.

Yelp
I was craving rotisserie chicken and this place did not disappoint. I ordered the whole chicken meal that comes with rice and a pita. The chicken itself is so juicy and flavorful. The skin of the chicken was nice and crispy. It was really good chicken. The rice was aright nothing special. And the pita was kind of soggy because it was to take out and under the chicken. But overall the food was good. The food is also very affordable. Paid around 20 bucks for this meal. I definitely can see myself ordering the chicken in the future.

Yelp
I lived in Chicago in the late 80s and 90s. I lived on the North side and traveled to the downtown pretty much everyday, often on the Clark or Broadway bus. I remember when this new place that sold chicken opened up...30 years ago! I no longer live in Chicago, but I'm close enough to visit whenever I want. First thing I do when I get there is head up to Broadway and Belmont to eat at Chicken Hut! I always get the half-chicken dinner with potato salad, an extra pita bread grilled a little extra crispy and a Coke. I love the smell of the fire-grilled chicken while I sit at the window counter watching the city go by. After about 5 minutes my food was ready and I was almost giddy with anticipation. I haven't been here for over a year...way TOO LONG! I bit off a piece of warm, slightly crunchy pita. I popped the lid off my dipping salsa. I tore the first bit of chicken off the wing and dipped it in the salsa...DAMN, THAT'S GOOD! The zesty salsa...the ever so slightly charred chicken skin... the warm, seasoned meat burning my fingers just a little. My mouth is watering as my stomach growls just writing this! The potato salad is good , but it seems a little different from how I remember it. I went to the counter and bought a second salsa (yeh, it's that good!). It isn't like taco salsa, it's lighter with different seasonings. You gotta try it. I finished both happy and sad. I had a great meal, but I also knew it would probably be months before I got to eat here again. My meal as pictured with a Coke was a little over $11.00. I have literally been eating here for 30 years, I hope I have another 30 years to keep eating here. This is some of the best of REAL Chicago!

Nick L.

Yelp
This is the most simple yet satisfying meal. My girlfriend and I crave this at least once a week because it is tender, juicy chicken and great sides. She gets the mashed potatoes and I get the coleslaw. Love it. Cheap, fast, but high quality.

Lexie L.

Yelp
This place is SO GOOD. "Just regular grilled chicken and potatoes can't actually be THAT good", you think. But you're wrong! It really is. The chicken is cooked/seasoned super nicely and the pita bread is insanely good for some reason -- like it's soft, chewy and charred. (If you're gluten-free, don't be like me and assume you'll just toss the pita rather than asking for no pita... because once you see it, it'll all be over.)
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
Crispy and delicious moist chicken with a good flavor. Portions were very generous too. The price is also reasonable. The menu is very small and straightforward, but if you're looking for a simple and filling, delicious meal, give this place a try.
google avatar

Peter B.

Yelp
I'm not a fan of the sides here, but the chicken is fantastic. The meat is juicy and tender and the skin is definitely the standout. If you order the mashed potatoes, you will need to add your own seasoning, the corn on the cob is mushy, and I could do without the pita and salsa. But the quality and taste of the chicken is why I am giving this place 4 stars. My advice is to come for the chicken alone. My wife and I have ordered delivery from Chicken Hut several times during the pandemic, and I would highly recommend it.
google avatar

Lucas W.

Yelp
My go to for fresh grilled chicken! Props for being in the neighborhood. Juicy with sauce and potatoes. Have never tried delivery or Ubereats as others have but come in and you'll love it. Ooo... and the pitas are the other best part
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
The best chicken in chicago. That burnt crusty skin on the chicken is so good. Grew up eating this and will continue to bring friends and family there. Mashed potatoes and gravy is bomb. The pita is so good. And the red sauce they give you with the chicken is excellent.
google avatar

Jake D.

Yelp
I've been coming to chicken hut for 20 years and it's never disappointed. The prices have steadily increased but have remained fair. For $10 you get a good meal with drink that is incredibly fast. I hope this place stays open forever.
google avatar

Annie B.

Yelp
Food was supposed to be delivered at 6:10pm. Food showed up 1 full hour late. Chicken was dry and there was no explanation.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
If you grew up in the Lakeview area you know what a gem Chicken Hut is. First of all they have been open for as long as I can remember literally being a little kid and having chicken hut for dinner. It's a place that everyone in the burbs would call mom to order from for parties. Their menu is simple & they do a fantastic job on each and everything they offer from their chicken (perfect every-time) to their signature salsa/sauce thing they serve on the side to their pita (always warm & delicious). You really cannot go wrong with Chicken Hut. So glad to see them thriving & providing great service & great food time & time again.
google avatar

Kara S.

Yelp
Oh, Chicken Hut. How did you and I just meet? Your chicken is so juicy and fresh. Your delivery so fast! Lightening quick. The skin? Perfectly crisp and seasoned - nice crackle. Pita so warm and fluffy - not stale in the least bit. Cole slaw is like whoa! Sooooo, so good. The portions? Forget about it. I've never seen larger portions in my life. You gave me enough for three meals just from the 1/2 special. My only wish is that you were more generous with that glorious, fresh salsa. I could literally drink that salsa every day. I guess I'll just need to order some more. I will never be able to quit you and that's okay.

Yelp
Holy mole. I just cant express my feelings about chicken hut. It is so goood. I got a chicken and ate it and it was good. I lov chiken hut
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
The sides are not so good here but the chicken is awesome. Considering the low price, buying a whole roasted chicken here is an insanely good deal. I would absolutely skip the sides here though.

Joe F.

Yelp
Love the kids place; love the chicken and mashed potatoes! Prices aren't too bad. And it is healthy.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Nothing really special about this place. Just your average chicken. Not bad but wouldn't go out of my way
google avatar

Marta B.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! You get great food for a very fair price. For example, half a chicken, 2 pitas, mashed potatoes, corn on the cab plus a soft drink will run you about $13. Crazy! The place is far from fancy, you have a long counter along the window, and 2 or 3 small tables if I remember correctly. The guys behind the counter are always friendly and get my food ready quick. The parking situation can be tricky, but I usually get my food to go anyways so I run in and out hoping for no ticket. Their chicken is literally a Ferrari amongst other chickens. Succulent, tender, I could go on forever. The actual food is 5 stars. The parking sucks and the place is really small that's why I gave it 4 stars.
google avatar

Tonya S.

Yelp
10 out of 10. Food was amazing. As i left i put my leftovers in a to-go plate (me and my husband will give any extras to the homeless) to my surprise the young man behind the counter even gave a container with this amazing tasting sauce to go with the leftovers, as we told him it was going to the less fortunate.

Yelp
I work nearby and decided to try this place for lunch. I ordered the quarter chicken special for $9.15 (after tax), which comes with quarter of a chicken, one side, pita, salsa, and a drink. The portion was more than enough for me and the price was decent. After reading the sign in the store that said it would cost extra to get white meat in the quarter chicken special I was under the impression that it would be predominantly, if not all, dark meat. Why else charge more for white meat? Well, I was greatly disappointed when I opened my box to discover it was ALL white meat. I generally dislike white meat because whenever I order it I always get chicken that is dry, overcooked, or flavorless. And this was no exception. The skin was yummy, but the chicken was dry and bland. Not to mention, why should anyone have to pay extra for all white meat if the meal is all white meat anyway? For a side I got the mashed potatoes and they were a bit blah. I ate them but they weren't anything special. I feel they should have a wider selection of side items to choose from. A lot of people don't like cold salads, such as potato salad or coleslaw. My husband is one of those people and he also happens to hate rice. That leaves just mashed potatoes and corn for someone like him. And considering how sub-par their mashed potatoes are it would be nice if they had other options, such as french fries, mac and cheese, baked beans, or other veggies or salad for those that want to eat healthier. Overall, it wasn't horrible. It was super fast and the staff was friendly, but I don't see myself every going back there.
google avatar

Shimmy B.

Yelp
For the second time, the stores did not follow delivery instructions. The food is done but I won't be ordering from them any time soon.
google avatar

Kate F.

Yelp
The chicken was very flavorful, mashed potatoes were from real potatoes, and the coleslaw was homemade. We got a whole chicken with two quart sides and a pita for about $22. It made a nice light dinner for 4 adults. It was also very fast - I was out of the door with dinner at 8:00 on Friday night before my husband was able to pay for parking at the curbside station. I'm confused about the pricing, though. There is a set of prices on the wall, and a different set on the flyer on the counter, and I was charged something different. It was a good value, I'd just like to know what I'm spending when I order.

Happiness L.

Yelp
First time here after passing by many times. Parking is a challenge. Chicken, mashed potatoes, and pita were really good. I recommend they offer chicken juice on the side. Best tip I can offer is to get both the bbq and salsa sauces and use them at the same time. Very nice flavor combo. Very nice people work here and it's clean.
google avatar

Erika G.

Yelp
The smell of this place is irresistable. The taste of their food is even better. The price makes it an amazing value. Three people can eat very well - whole chicken, pita, couple of sides and two sauces - for about $14. The counter guys are cute and polite and your food is ready to go in about five seconds, tops. The taste of the skin on this chicken. Mmmmmmm. . . . yummy savory, mouth watering. This is fast food, but not unhealthy food. I love this place 'cos they do one thing, and they do it perfectly. Just great! The only drawback is the space itself can get warm on a warm summer day, but who cares . . . get take out, and go back home and pig out!

Yelp
DELICIOUS!!!! I was blown away at how yummy this chicken is. The cole slaw wasn't anything fabulous but the chicken... I guess that's why they call this place The Chicken Hut and not The Cole Slaw Hut. :-) 1/4 chicken w/side, plus pita and salsa was under $6!! Side choices included mashed and potato salad. This place must do a great carryout business. While we were there, several people came for carryout incuding a guy picking up 6 entire chickens. I wanted to chat him up and see if I could get invited to his party but my BF stopped me. :-)
