"Khao mun gai (AKA Hainanese chicken, a similar preparation that’s the national dish of Singapore) gained traction on the West Coast with the hit Portland food cart Nong's Khao Man Gai. Locally, it’s the centerpiece of new restaurants like Chick’n Rice in Berkeley, started last summer by the founders of food delivery service Caviar." - Caleb Pershan

My husband and I tried the small-sized KMG (translates as poached chicken w/chicken rice on the menu) and fried KMG. It comes with cucumbers, sauces, and chicken broth. While the price seems expensive ($8.99 for the small size), the food was tasty and satisfying. I’d like to come back and try some of the other dishes and sides.

A wonderful place with a nice small menu - (poached) chicken rice, fried chicken rice, pork + rice, and tofu + rice. I came here to see how similar the chicken rice is to the classic hainanese chicken rice served in Malaysia, and I have to say, it's spot on and super delicious. The chicken I had was poached very well and retained tons of flavor while not being dry at all, and the rice was also yummy (you could probably eat it by itself if you wanted to). The decor is also pretty neat, with modern wood paneled walls and red chicken & chicken wire accents. It's not very big (7 tables inside, 1 outside, and 4 stool seats for a total of 20 seats) but does offer take out and delivery. The only thing I didn't like was the plastic cutlery, which was they very flimsy type that can be hard to cut meat with sometimes...

This spot is amazing! Their mango and sticky rice with Thai ice tea flavored ice cream is my go to dessert!

I went there 3 three times and tried Chicken n Rice and braised pork with rice. I am afraid to say that is enough for trying out this restaurant. The chicken n rice I can understand it is offered at a kind of room temperature, but the braised pork, I don't think it tastes good when it is just warm and a bit chill. It is a bit pricey for the regular box,. Also, I did not order the pork skin and somehow it ended up in my meal box. I felt like the dish is sitting in the kitchen for a long time and they did not bother to warm it up. How come the rice is not hot?? Also the soup that comes with a dish, it is overly flavored with chicken stock, very thick and yellow. I took out the daikon and threw away the soup.

I saw the chicken, fried rice and greens on my cousins IG account it looked so good in the picture I had to try it myself. So I did! I have to say it was worth the drive. I’ll drive anywhere to taste great food! The fried rice reminded me of Filipino garlic fried rice, the chicken was flavorful and the greens were an added bonus!!! Yumm!!!

I was a cook there for a while. Food was ok, braised pork was excellent. Working conditions were so disgusting. Black grease everywhere and all over me. They worked me to the bone, got immersion foot every night until summer and our student customers were not around. Since business slowed down, they just stopped giving me hours. No warning at all. They kept me on and my hopes up but at zero hours. I'm homeless now thanks to chick n rice. Good food from a company that doesn't care about its workers at all.

Chicken was pretty dry, although the rice was actually well-flavored (with chicken fat?). I personally prefer a mix of bone-in thigh and breast with plenty of skin for this dish, but if you're really into chicken breast/white meat, this might be your thing.

The first time was better than the second. My first time here was great! The wait wasn't too long and with a short menu, everything went smoothly. The portion size was fantasic! For $10, I was satisfied. I ordered my food to go and walked less then 5mins to my job to eat. The food was warm and filling. But that was 2weeks ago! I order the exact same dish and even had the exact some women with blue nails as my cashier. I walked back to work within the same time frame as my last visit. But now my chicken and rice was cold. My soups was luke warm and it smelled/tasted sour. There where big pieces of some sort of vegatable in my soup that was hard and bitter and there was way too much oil. The thing that kinda saved the dish was the sauce. Which didn't help with the dry chicken and rice after I re-heated my order. And it definitely did not help the soup. I don't know what happened, but I'm very disappointed in what I was just served. The same people I told to visit and eat here, I informed the not to bother. Consistence matters!
