Chicky's General Store

Best neighborhood spot! Everyone is so friendly, especially Levi, s/o to him. Their sandwiches are delicious and they make the best lattes in the neighborhood, the homemade syrups make it top notch. It’s always a vibe in there, definitely recommend!

Such amazing food! I placed a larger order and they were so accommodating and made sure each meal was labeled and packaged properly. The food was so delicious, fresh, and healthy too. You have to try the steak sandwich and the caesar salad!

I am giving a one-star review for the lack of customer service here at this place. The other reviews are apparently not lying about this one female that works there that has a bad attitude based on my recent experience. I went in on Saturday June 15th to pick up an online order around 12:20pm. I asked if my pickup order was ready, which I actually waited till the female behind the counter was less busy. She handed it to me, but gave the rudest tone response, "next time you have to wait in line!" I briefly explained to her that I was told by another employee that it was okay, no need to wait in line next time. Her response, "I am the general manager, I don't who told you that!" Again, with complete rudeness. I feel this was so inappropriate and more inappropriate is that it appears to keep happening. This put a sour note on my shopping experience here. And for that, I will never return and going further not recommend it either.

I came here for the first time today and was excited to try one of their sandwiches. Bed-Stuy doesn’t have enough sandwiches spots! I ordered the turkey sandwich, a bag of the Mams Zuma’s Revenge chips and a chocolate chip cookie. The sandwich was good; I got it with mayo and mustard which gave it a good blend of savory and zesty. The cookie was way too sweet, though; I have a sweet tooth but the sugar in the cookie was overpowering, even for me. Loved the chips! I don’t see that brand a lot in NYC so I was so happy to see Chicky’s carries them. I’ll definitely be back.

I enjoyed the Chimichurri Steak Sando (Seared steak, roasted peppers, provolone cheese, chimichurri, mayo, arugula, on ciabatta.) My husband had the chicken salad sandwich which we also enjoyed too.

(also, i’m black so please don’t try to use race here, she just has an attitude problem). if you would like patrons to wait outside until their order is ready due to limited space, then make a sign. don’t passive aggressively stare at them as if you don’t want them there or rudely tell them to get out. also they treat the neighborhood men who hang around their store as if they don’t belong when it is in fact them who’s gentrifying the neighborhood. i’m starting to see that the only reason chickys is still open is bc it’s likely the only type of place in the neighborhood, i hope a place with better service and better food, opens up like it, so i won’t be forced to go here cause it’s convenient.

The mortadella sandwich is FANTASTIC. Came back two days in a row because it’s that good.

Sandwiches take at least 30 minutes. Woman working there is hysterical and will snap at you if you arrive “before the time noted on your email.” Witnessed her yelling at another customer. It’s never that busy and they’re just sandwiches, relax.

The sandwiches are bomb, the coffee is great, the people are super nice, good energy, good food, interesting to look around and try new things!

Fresh, high quality, and unique sandwiches! Taking a star off because we had to wait 30-40 minutes and the red peppers made the bread soggy very quickly.

I used to love them. Now I don't. Not a single vegan sandwich in the place. The woman behind the counter was condescending AF. NOT even willing to substitute on a veggie sandwich to make it vegan. Sad. The only option they offered me was a salad. Boooooo. This has nothing to do with COVID. This is just mean spiritedness.

It's about time!! Bed-Stuy has been changing as quickly as the rest of NY. Chicky's is a reflection of that change. It's a specialty shop and if people know me then they know that I'm a sucker for a specialty shop! People dirty talk..I food talk!! "Local", "Farm Raised", "Ohhhh---rganic"..oh my!! Tell me more! I was so happy with the lay out. There's a rustic southern charm to all of Tara Oxley's projects. It adds that feeling of home. A nice home. But still a home. A place were you want to order a Stumptown coffee and sit on the front bench and take a load off. Chicky's is named after grandfather so the feeling of home makes sense. I love all the hints of design from a lamp with a hand sculpted face to the giant taxidermy turkey. And the dangling cords and lights above. The exposed brick wall is lovely. This is the place to come for a variety of cheese. Also fresh produce that might be hard to find elsewhere like graffiti eggplant. There's tons of yummy pantry items such as, Herbare the herbed salt that was my staple when I lived in Germany. And I have become a recent fan of Cream Nut peanut butter for $5/ This is a company from Virginia that has been making their minimal pb for 80 years!! I got think they got the recipe down. There's also tons of new items to try and fall in love with. You can also find a variety of prepared sides that could easily complete a dinner party or make a quick dinner. I'm drawn to the breakfast sandwich menu where one can build their own. And yes, there's an addition of avocado! My favorite! Their chocolate basket here states "it's choco-clock" ! Why.. ..yes it is! I need this on a watch! Keep up the good work Tara! Your businesses are filling up bellies and creating smiles!

Top little store, privately owned which is always good and a local to Bed Stuy too, in a great part of Bed Stuy. Everything one could need, good prices and always greeted with a smile. The croissant bread pudding is literally life changing, it's like the best thing since sliced bread... recommend it alone just for that!

I take it back, they're the worst. Awhile ago they installed a bench/box thing around the tree (public) that's growing in the sidewalk area (public) in front of the store. That's all well and good, but I just noticed that they've written "For Chicky's Customers" on it. Deciding to build something in a public space doesn't give you the right to also decide who uses it. You opened a business in a vibrant community, try a little harder to be a decent member of it. I wish they would close and something more generous of spirit would open instead. I'll never go there again.

I'm not diggin this place. Decided to give it a whirl today. Prepared food in display case looked old. I settled on a soup. Disappointed because for almost 8 bucks I got broth with carrots and celery. I can't account for the baked goods as I didn't attempt to try them. I plan to pass this place up in the future. Honestly I don't think this place gets a lot of play, which may be the reason their food looked old. I see some people outside holding some of their baked goods from time to time. Peaches was pumping and so was brown butter. Maybe I should have just gone with my instinct and not tried it. Oh well.

My friend got sick here the first time he went, and vowed to never go again. Another friend who is a professional food person said she wouldn't trust the fish... This is not how I want NYC to end up. This kind of place sucks. No prices on lots of the inventory, little to no cheap items. This isn't soho, you out of touch motherfuckers. Its bougie/classist/elitist with a smile. Fuck that. I'd rather have them treat me like shit and have basics that I'd actually like to buy. For the record, I'm not even poor, this is just philosophy. The workers are nice though. But who cares when other things are so off-putting, and, like I said in my review of Eugene and Co, tone def. I fucking hate places that only cater to hipster newbies and ignore everyone else. Class warfare!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This place looks really cozy and cool and well-stocked, but sadly turns out to be slow, overpriced, and mediocre-to-bad. My friend and I went to get to-go lunches, and this was both of our conclusion. We were shocked at what we respectively had to consume--a box of prepared food which took an aeon to put together, and a sad wilted salad with a blah dressing that blotched the surface--especially given the price and time of preparation. We should have trusted the wisdom of the crowds, which thronged Brown Butter across the street. The only commendable thing here: their ridiculously tasty (and free) fruit water. Drink it and flee!

I come here almost every day to get coffee and a sandwich. The food is delicious, good coffee, and great friendly staff. And it's locally owned! They have some of the healthiest options in the area as well, even providing a CSA Pick up. Can honestly say of all the times I've come here I've never had a bad experience.

Chicky's is owed by the same team behind Eugene and Co, so it goes without saying that everything is made fresh with an emphasis on locally sourced goods. That being said, prices are higher than at your deli or local supermarket, but that is to be expected. I've stopped by Chicky's for treats to bring to parties, and it's great for picking up snacks to enjoy outside during the warmer months. On my last visit, I got a bacon egg & cheese that was a hearty sandwich--ran me about $12 but it was worth it. It feels good to support a local spot that clearly cares about the neighborhood it is in while also supporting farms and small food/beverage businesses. Next time to you need to bring something to the function, see what Chicky's has to offer!

Not one for reviews, but this is a special spot in the neighbourhood that makes my day every time I stop in. It's cozy and every little detail has been considered; you can see that each of the shelves have been carefully curated with speciality goods and fine fare. There's always a seasonal selection of fruits and veggies up front, as well as fresh prepared foods, but if I'm being honest, I come for the cookies and pastries! It's great having a shop like this on my block when the closest grocery store is just out of reach, and doesn't carry frozen Roberta's pizza anyways!

New to Bed-Stuy and so glad I found this place. It has become my go-to coffee spot. The sandwiches are great and I love the staff. I think Brooklyn needs more places like this that offer healthy, organic choices mixed with funky style. Wouldn't feel right if I didn't recommend the fried chicken sandwich- it is amazing!! (If you are anything like me you will appreciate the brownie- I seriously can't walk in without getting one!)

I always have really ambitious plans for my weekends. All the places I'll go and things I'll accomplish. And then I stay in bed until late afternoon and realize I never picked up cheese for my friend's wine party. Luckily, Chicky's is located directly between my apartment and the aforementioned wine party and they have cheeses. Not just any cheeses, good cheeses. No Kraft singles here, no sir. I ended up selection three cheeses - morbier, la tur, and a funky Gorgonzola. I would have liked more charcuterie options, but did take their last little pot of a delish pate. They have a lot of locally produced goods and I was able to pick up a fresh baguette from Saraghina (they sell some of their pasta too!). At the counter, they have a selection of treats from Chez Alex and I purchased cookies made by a woman who lives just down the street. They have a small produce and meat selection, which I'll be back to try. You can't expect to do your regular grocery shopping here, but they definitely fill in the missing pieces.

The veggie sandwich is delectable. It was love at first bite. I've never ordered anything different. The chorizo iberico from the butcher section was the best I've had outside spain...very good flavor

No shade to this establishment, but I came here for a little dessert after eating across the street from here, yesterday. It had the vibe and feel of a general store...in Alabama...in 1856. The cashier was very pleasant, but the store didn't have anything that went with what I had to eat. I had the bread pudding, which was delicious, but they had no ice cream to go with it. The cashier said I could purchase a pint. Say what now? Then I asked for hot chocolate, which I asked be made with milk but it tasted like pure tap water and simple syrup. They had me all the way f*cked up after that. And they really don't have indoor seating. The chairs are juxtaposed in a way where you are staring at the cashier while you eat your pricey dessert or sandwich. I found a table to sit at, which I think was part of the display. One of the cashiers was like "oh where did that come from?!?" As I say and ate, I watched hipster after hipster come into the establishment to buy a few things. One woman bought 32 ounces of tangerine juice...for $11.00. Hell, I was upset for her. Who is pricing these items, Ray Charles?!?! That same brand of juice sells for $4.50 online. And with the crackheads coming in and out of the establishment, I felt like I was interrupting a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Only in Brooklyn. SMH.

I come to chickys almost everyday! One of the baristas knows my order by heart. Sad to say I will never purchase anything from here again. My coworker went to go pickup breakfast for us, almost every time she comes back with our orders her sandwich is made incorrectly and missing items that she asked to be added. My order is normally correct I only get egg and cheese on ciabatta. Today my egg was not cooked at all it wasn't running but the clear slime from the yolk was very visible and very disgusting. I called and the woman who answered the phone was very snappy and rude not like usual. She asked me to come back. I said I wasn't interested in getting anything remade she said that's fine just come back. I get there she says " I didn't service you today" knowing that my coworker ordered on my behalf and we come in there every damn day. She looked up the order and read the two sandwiches back to me I told her I believe she ordered a salad as well she says " yeah I'm not refunded that" . She gave me a refund that I never asked for and tried to sweeten the situation by telling me to have a good day and apologized.That was the only time that I got an apology.

There are bodegas all over the neighborhood - a grocery store a couple blocks away (Foodtown) and markets all over Fulton. But sometimes, I want a little nicer pasta, olive oil, or maybe condiments, some coffee or sandwich. Or I want to just run across the street to grab a few things to throw dinner together rather than walking a mile round trip. Picking up some items at Chicky's is no more then ordering dinner off Seamless, better quality + quicker too! I don't understand the commenter below... from everything I've experienced at Chicky's, all of the people who work there, as well as the owner, are incredibly friendly and inviting -- and the store is quaint and intimate, a place that fosters getting to know your neighbors and much warmer then pushing a cart at the grocery store. The store that existed before there, I loved the exterior and what it represented so much - but for a stationery store, there was never any paper and seemed to provide little by way of consumer goods to the neighborhood. Chicky's is a small business, owned by a local who lives half a block away, supporting other small businesses and is providing a desired service to many.

Thank you God, finally a place in our neighborhood (after nine years of waiting) that has fresh, beautiful, delicious, farm to table, well thought out and prepared food as well as well curated and stocked shelves and coolers. This goes along with a tremendously friendly counter staff and truly creative and ingenious culinary staff. I have used Chicky's for everything from coffee and breakfast, to lunch and dinner sandwiches to taking some of their amazingly tasty and fresh catfish fillets to BBQ for Memorial Day weekend. I have never been let down. I have honestly almost completed the entire run of the sandwich menu, and the specials they have are fantastic, soups and sammy's alike. Hector, I love and hate you for getting me hooked on your old bay tartar sauce. After years of seeing one corner after the nest being taken over by a deli or bodega opening up, thank you Tara and crew for bringing Chicky's to the neighborhood. TURKAAAAY!

Wish I had one of these in my neighborhood! Lovely local grocer with all the provisions any home cook dream of. Feels like someone spent a lot of time considering and thoughtfully curated everything from the Intelligentsia Coffee all the way down to the hard to find good Dijon Mustard. We got a couple of pre-made salads to go and are on the front bench. Fun way to spend a Saturday discovering new neighborhoods. Can't wait to come back!

I love this place, it's an anchor in the neighborhood for me. Whenever I go in there people behind the counter know me by name and are always up for some banter. One of my favorite things is to get a coffee and sandwich and just sit outside their store on a nice day and watch people walk by.

Chicky's is one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood! Their coffee bar is fantastic, the sandwiches are delicious, and there's always fresh produce and unique pantry items to enjoy. The owner is local to Bed-Stuy and gets to know everyone who comes in so it really feels like a neighborhood spot. It's a great place to stop on your way to work for coffee & a breakfast sandwich or on your way home to grab groceries for dinner. They also have the best brownie in Brooklyn!

I frequent Chicky's about once a week, sometimes more if I'm lucky! They were our go-to quarantine grocery delivery service and always have the most delightful people working. Their homemade chai is delicious and we can always count on them for scrumptious pastries and sandwiches. (One last plus, dog treats!!)

A much needed addition to the neighborhood. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The selection is wonderful.

This store contains ridiculously priced products for the neighborhood it has chosen to gentrify. $29 per pound cheese. $20+ per pound meat. My boyfriend bought popcorn and a bar of chocolate here and it cost him $13. The types of products also include pasta for $8 a box, canned goods for triple the price they should be, just basically the most cliche "general" store you could imagine. Nothing interesting about the design. And nothing inviting for locals. That's how this store rolls. I'd write more about the stores place in the neighborhood but they like to censor critics.

Great customer service, though I was in and out after grabbing some tea. Vibe was really chill, and a few customers started chatting over the style of music in the spot. Cool place to hang out and pick up quick necessities. Worth coming back to see more of what they offer.

I love this place for many reasons! Beef jerky, turkey, cheese and fish. And all super fresh. Yes please! You walk in and feel like family. Such good people. Tara and Mantha will guide you and help you to make the best dinner ever.

I'm so happy that Chicky's came into the neighborhood! It's a very cool space, not too huge but still a nice selection of both everyday and more rare items. I love that I can grab a bunch of different prepared items as either side dishes or mains...the meatloaf was delicious, a standout! It's not going to be where I do my huge grocery runs, but they have so many items that I only see at Whole Foods or online that I already find myself stopping into Chicky's more regularly than most other markets. The prices are surprisingly reasonable for the quality.

Had the beet salad and shrimp and trout salad!!! Yum!!! An old fashioned CUTE General store.

Impressive! This was sorely needed in bedstuy. Fresh organic locally sourced produce, meats and fish. Delicious coffee and also a great selection of prepared foods. Good job!

This place makes me so mad. In this corner of bed stuy, there aren't many places where one can buy nice produce, cheese, bread, or uncommon ingredients and I had really hoped that Chicky's could fill that gap. Instead, they have a tiny unpredictable selection of produce, they don't have basic dairy products or eggs, they don't sell bread. They do have a random assortment of highly overpriced pantry items, and their food to go is not particularly good. Their pastries are just bad. A croissant I had recently was greasy and mushy and a chocolatine tasted chalky and not fresh. And they cost 4.50$! Their sandwiches are fine but expensive and it can be a long wait even when nobody else is in the store. If you want a much better cup of coffee and a pastry, go to anchor coffee (one block away). If you want a delicious lunch with friendly service go to bed stuy provisions (4 blocks away). If you want to pay 11$ for a bundle of white asparagus then I guess go to chicky's.

There is a scarcity of food shops in Bed-Stuy for those who care about (and can afford to pay higher prices for) the ingredients they use. That is why I chose to support Chicky's, walking 30 minutes to and from this cute little store facing the restaurant run by the same owner to purchase some basic supplies. However, I must say my experience has been extremely disappointing. The store rarely carries the same products on a regular basis, meaning you cannot rely on it for your cooking needs. The selection is simply poor. As for the service, it is shockingly rude. I recommend going to Saraghina instead to be greeted with a lovely smile and excellent service. And Foodkick delivers my basic produce from the farm straight to my front door - with a smile, too!

The fish is fresh. The coffee is strong. their egg sandwich Is pricey but with it. staff is super friendly. Haven't had many of their prepared foods but I'be liked like fish cakes. probably one of the best places to get fresh fish in bed stuy.

Chicky's is a great first step in filing an great void in the neighborhood. Yes, it is expensive, but not irrationally so, and that's the point, it is a gourmet grocer with gourmet speciality products. The neighborhood as sufficient delis and bodegas, this is something more. Here you can find higher end more exotic food products than are not available at other neighborhood grocers. Thank god I no longer need to drive to Williamsburg every time I am looking for good organic meat, turbinado sugar, or some exotic condiment!

I love the idea of bringing a higher-end food shop to Bed Stuy -- a wonderful wonderful neighborhood but a food desert outside the bodegas -- but the execution here is very poor. I've been to Chicky's 4 times intending to shop but haven't even managed to buy anything yet! The fish always looks filmy and old, the veggies typically limp, and the prepared food my wife bought there -- a quiche and some kind of pastry -- were bland. The dry goods aren't much help either, even though at our house we cook everything from Asian to Mediterranean to French. A couple weeks ago I went in to buy coffee beans and they didn't have any. No coffee! My wife and I cook every day, but try as we might and despite our very best intentions, we can't give up going and spending way too much money at places like Greene Grape in Fort Greene (expensive but really worth it at the meat and cheese counters in particular). At first I was inclined to chock up the problems to inexperience and didn't want to say anything negative. But as weeks turn to months, not so much. Please step up your game and we will be there 2-3 times a week, I promise. I spend a lot of money on food ingredients and would love to keep more of that here in Bed Stuy.

I'm glad there's a local pantry store in this neighborhood that sells gourmet stuff. Some items are pricey and I'd go elsewhere, but good to know it's there if needed in a pinch. The Veggie, and Grilled Cheese sandwiches are yummy! Worth the price. The prepared food sold by the pound look interesting too, and moderately priced. I'll try them out soon.

A great place to pick up a sandwich or a coffee - or basic things like pasta, milk, and cheese. Love the pesto chicken sandwich! Such a great place to now have in the neighborhood!
