12 Best St. Patrick’s Day Destinations in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Chief Sullivan’s is a local named for San Francisco fire chief Dennis Sullivan, who served during the 1906 earthquake and fires. From the team behind the now-closed Eddie Rickenbacker’s and Marina spot Campus, Chief Sullivan’s is warm and welcoming, with dark wood and stained glass. The kitchen boasts an Irish breakfast for weekend brunch, and beers on tap range from the requisite Guinness and Smithwick’s to more local ales." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
What a fantastic place. We came in here in search of a place to watch the FC Barcelona/ Copa del Rey finals and were so happy to see the game broadcasting on multiple screens, with a handful of other Barça fans also watching. The fan atmosphere was lively and full of comradery. Excellent service, delicious drinks. Our bartender made me a custom drink to order ("something like a mojito, minty and cucumber-y") that was superb. What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Google
Called in for a couple of drinks when in the north beach area. We sat at the bar and were welcomed with a smile off the bar tender. We quickly ordered from the menu, and the drinks were great. I had the Guinness infused Old Fashioned, which was so good. The bar was full of servicemen and women who were present for fleet week.

What I love most about his place is the noise that emanates from it - it’s ambient noise in C minor for my reading at nearby cafe ; this noise has become a soothing soundtrack. And it’s free for me . One day they should charge for providing this beautiful commotion. And even get a conductor to orchestrate the noise of screeches and shrieks.

Google
It's a step about a dive bar with good food and nice well to do locals. Our server was always attentive to our groups needs. Safe place to drink. Live music sometimes. There is a north beach public parking lot about 2 blocks away across from cop shop.enjoyable place to meet friends for a drink

Have been coming here forever. It's so good! Freddy behind the bar is awesome. This is the singularly BEST place to watch the game and grab a bite in North Beach. Food is terrific. Prices are reasonable for both food and cocktails. Best of all, they turn the volume up for games. Try the prime rib sandwich, the jalapeno burger, and the chicken sandwich and the salad All were freshly made and delicious.

Google
Secretly very spacious and pricey-ish bar with the best pumpkin espresso martini and the bartender looks a bit like Mac from it’s always sunny. Lovely service and atmosphere! Hope to come back soon

Google
One of my favorite bars in the city. Stunning vintage pub interior with an expansive outdoor area for sunny SF days. Atmosphere is electrifying on game days. Also can’t go wrong with they’re amazing Irish coffee!

Google
Chief Sullivan‘s is a proper bar with great live music by the Irish Newsboys, strong drinks and good bar food. I stop by on Friday nights when I can. The location is pretty fabulous too!

Yelp
Total gem! We came here on a whim on a Saturday evening, as we'd been wanting to spend more time exploring North Beach. We were drawn to the quaint neighborhood pub appearance, and ended up having a fantastic time here! The interior is very charming, with lots of interesting art painted on the walls, stained glass, cozy wood paneling, and plenty of seating. We plopped ourselves at the relatively empty bar, and were greeted by two very friendly bartenders. The drinks were pretty good, and exactly what I'd expect from a classic sports pub - nothing special, but it got the job done! We tried the Paper Plane, Hot Irish Coffee, and a couple beers. Our drinks were brought out quickly, and they even asked if we wanted to play games at the bar! After obviously saying yes, they brought us a portable Connect Four board, so I was able to dominate my partner at games while we sipped our drinks. The bartenders were lively and friendly, and the atmosphere was great. Chief Sullivan's provided exactly the cozy neighborhood pub vibe we were looking for, and I'm sure we'll be back again!

Yelp
In town visiting a friend and we came here to join the ND Club of the Bay Area to watch the Sugar Bowl game. I got a coconut mojito and pretzel, friends got beers, wings, and mozzarella sticks. The mojito is DELICIOUS! Refreshing and not overly sweet. Perfect cocktail for me being a picky drinker. The pretzel order came with 2 and nacho queso, but they had no salt, and one of them was not heated all the way through and we had to send it back to warm up. The mozzarella sticks were shorter and plumper than the usual bar sticks, and the breading was different. They were ok, but when the cheese is that thick, they weren't fully melted in the center. The wings, however, were perfect and .y friends made note to keep this on their list of places with good wings. They were crispy and juicy, and the sauce was really good without being overly spicy. Plus, it was all flats without asking for it and she loved that! Ordered the fries after halftime, and they are bomb! Love me some good shoestring fries that are crisp and salty outside and chewy inside. So good! Definitely get the fries! Panda was our server (and I think the only server for the whole bar tending to all us game watchers), and she was friendly and did a fantastic job keeping on top of every table. The other staff member helping clear tables and run food was also attentive and helped keep tabs on everyone. Not easy to find parking in the area, but overall it was a great spot to hang for the game watch with fellow Irish fans! They have tvs in multiple areas and angles throughout the bar and outside!!

Yelp
$36 subtotal for a guinness and two basic IPAs is wild, especially for a bar w/ 0 ambience. Recommend Northstar, Boardroom, or anywhere else.

Elijah G.

Yelp
A cozy bar in North Beach with a great vibe, but Freddy truly steals the show with his exceptional service. Attentive and friendly, he kept the energy high with free shots and even offered me a phone charger without me asking. The pulled pork sandwich was delicious, and the beer and booze selection hit the spot.

Yelp
This bar could be really fun, and from the looks of other reviews, people have had great experiences here. However, the bar manager and staff seemed almost as if they were TRYING to avoid us even though it was a quiet Sunday. For context, we were a group of 3 just hoping to grab a beer or soda and catch up over some appetizers. The bartender was nice enough, VERY zoned out, but nice. Unfortunately though, she poured so much grenadine syrup into one of our drinks that it was actually undrinkable. We were hoping to wash that down with their "famous" warm pretzel, but they were out of pretzels. Sooo we were hoping to be saved by the fries we ordered; it was not fun to watch them sit in the kitchen window for over 10 minutes - with no other food orders coming out - before making it to our table. Then the staff member who served us the fries barely even acknowledged us as he hastily put them down and walked away. Again, the place was quiet. Not busy at all. Overall bummed. Not worth the $.

Yelp
Slow to get food over 45 minutes with the Resturant being 1/4 full Service was not great I had to ask for water refills Plates were not cleared right away after each entree Very noisy

Ruben K.

Yelp
Disappointing experience. The waitress asked for a card before we even ordered, which felt disrespectful and unnecessary, especially since the bar wasn't busy as she claimed it might get. To make matters worse, we waited 30 minutes for a burger. Decent atmosphere, but poor service and slow kitchen make it hard to recommend.

Yelp
Great ambiance. Top notch staff. Killer drinks and food! Love coming here with friends. Valentina is the best!
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
Friendly staff (hi Freddie!)... full bar... laid back atmosphere... clean. Love it! We'll definitely come back.

Yelp
Removing the Liverpool FC connections ruined the social atmosphere. It used to attract an international crowd. Seems to be run by people that don't know soccer. Food and drinks still good. Missing the former managers.

Jasmin B.

Yelp
Last night my boyfriend came here to have a beer once he was done he ask for other beer and the bartender girl which her name is Valentina start yelling at him told him not to ask for other beer and for him to go some where else. And even told him don't need to call me to come over I come when I have time. This is very unprofessional of her and has no respect. And she yelled at him very bad and gave him the finger.

David M.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in North Beach and in San Francisco. The Lady Bartenders and staff always positive and attentive and even remembered me from my last couple of times being here. 10/10 Recommend - - Trivia on Wednesday's is a must. - Nachos are delicious. - love the dark ambiance, my kind of bar. - Cocktails are delicious and Beer is always cold!

Yelp
You guys need to get rid of Freddie. This is actually a great Irish bar- fun place, good food, good drinks. But the bar manager, Freddie, is an absolute ass hole and he is the reason I would not recommend going here. There are a ton of other bars in the area. I'd suggest spending your money at any of them before coming here.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Excellent service! Would come back again soon! The owner is very friendly and nice. My buddies and I had a great time.
google avatar

Derrick G.

Yelp
The vibes were immaculate and the service was dope the owner was awesome and I had a great time with my homies 10/10 recommend check it out when you're in the Bay Area. Freddy is the man foodsnis amazing too
google avatar

Rahul N.

Yelp
Freddie the bar manager is very rude, not only to patrons but also to his own staff It's not how I expect someone in the service industry to behave like. There's atleast 4 places in the same block that I'd rather take my money to

Jackie K.

Yelp
Having lived in North Beach for a while now, this is our neighborhood bar of choice, whether it's to watch our beloved Niners and Giants, hang out with other neighborhood friends and sometimes their dogs, or grab a quick bite to eat (don't miss out on the chicken tenders) - Chief's has it all!

Bobby M.

Yelp
LOVE this bar. Freddie, Valentina, and their staff are just plain wonderful. Imagine a dive + irish bar with a family vibe. If you can talk shit with love...you'll love this place.

Michael R.

Yelp
A beautiful bar in North Beach , but the star is Freddy and his great service. He was attentive and friendly, kept pouring us free shots, and offered me a phone charger without being asked. I also had a delicious pulled pork sandwich. Nice selection of beer and booze. Been coming here since it was O'Reilieys will continue every time I visit San Fransisco
google avatar

Dyanna Q.

Yelp
Cozy Irish bar with lots of indoor space and TVs to watch SF teams. I love the random murals and overall dive-ness of the place. Great place to grab beers before heading to Club Fugazi.

Justin D.

Yelp
Freddy is the best person ever. Took care of me and my friends and made sure everything was okay. I highly recommend coming back here! Vibes were immaculate and everyone was so friendly! Definitely coming back here!

Dawn M.

Yelp
Fun place! I loved visiting Sullivan's while in SF visiting my beautiful daughter Mallory. The staff was fantastic!!
google avatar

Jiyoung L.

Yelp
Been here for awesome breakfast twice then next 3 times either closed with no notice or no food serving anymore. Checked their website for brunch. Now they only have empanadas. That's not brunch food just bites. So sad.

Shahbaz P.

Yelp
The service was amazing and the customer service was also great. Freddy was very accommodating and made us feel at home.

Sona S.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this pub by chance and am so glad we did! The decor is so fun & they are an LFC pub (woot woot). The owner Freddie is an absolute gem; not only did he make the best Irish coffee I've ever had, he spent quite a bit of time chatting with us & suggesting places for us out of towners to check out. Will definitely be back here when we're in town, hopefully when there's an LFC game going on.

Beer G.

Yelp
Best bar in north beach, Valentyna and Jessie and Freddy are the best. We come here all the time and always get treated like family. Great place to watch all games. Liverpool, warriors and niners. This spot is always a great time!

Ryan S.

Yelp
Valentyna and Jessie are the best. Love this bar . Great bar to watch games . Best bar in north beach

Yelp
Came here on my trip to San Francisco during memorial day weekend. Such a cool pub with good vibes. Friendly staff, good drinks, and cozy environment. Definitely recommend it and will be back when I'm in town!

Yelp
Stopped in for a beer on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Susie our server went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. The beer was ice cold and the service was impeccable!! Can't wait to visit again soon!

Christopher G.

Yelp
P.S...please refer to picture for a real winner.

Yelp
Bleh. Delicious burger- terrible everything else. We came here for brunch prior to the Women's March for breakfast. The atmosphere on the inside mirrors the vibe that the funeral home across the street emits; dark cellar/rainy day blah. The menu says build your own Bloody Mary on weekends, and when I ordered one I was told it was only on Sundays. Took the waiter 10 minutes to greet us despite the eye contact and waves. Our drinks took 25 minutes and they weren't complicated nor was the place packed (he didn't even know what an old fashioned was?). Our food took almost an hour, but we really enjoyed everything; great flavors and my burger was cooked perfectly. But then we asked for hot sauce. .. every bottle in the establishment was empty. I think this place lacks some simple organization that could really elevate customer experiences. And expediter maybe- better trained servers, morning refill duties.. simple yet effective. I will say, their take on eggs Bennie with a Korean tempura twist was delightful. If I were to return, it'd be for that.

Yelp
Great looking Irish Pub in Little Italy which may be quite appropriate since many Irish & Italians went to the same Catholic church. Classy bar with old style tin ceiling, stained glass, corinthian looking ornate columns. Our friendly bartender from the Ukraine poured us some good brews appropriately from Ireland. Smithwick premium dark ale and Harp, a lighter lager style. After work hour tends to attract the under 40's crowd so the noise level goes up appreciably so it doesn't make for peaceful contemplation over a tawny glass of beer. However, the location does evoke an old world feel with good selection of Irish beer & Irish whiskeys. Éirinn go Brách! 4- yelp stars.
google avatar

Tony P.

Yelp
Service was good and attentive on a bustling Saturday afternoon. They sat us at the back patio since they were full out front but given we were the only ones sitting there it was a bit odd. We asked to move and they accommodated. Pretzel came with a dope cheese pimento and beers and mixed drinks were both great.

Micah S.

Yelp
Best bar in the city! A real neighborhood spot, friendly bartenders. Amazing Liverpool bar! YNWA!!!!!!
google avatar

LYnda S.

Yelp
Came across this place after lunch and enjoyed watching the Superbowl. They also have a nice little beer garden
google avatar

Sahil B.

Yelp
I think I found my new favorite Irish pub in SF. Sullivan's has a proper traditional Irish pub vibe and menu to back it. All wooden furniture, Harp on draught and just a general old pub vibe to it. Notice how old the fire fighting equipment looks and how it's all segmented. (Of course I am assuming this was just done to match the aesthetics of the pub and they have more "modern" style fire extinguishers somewhere in the back) I really wanted to try the full Irish but they weren't making it anymore at 12pm on Saturday, which should be peak brunch time. And then when I asked for eggs toast and bacon, it came out without any toast. So, minus one star for that. I guess I'll just have to come back earlier in the day to try it again.

Yelp
If you are seeking a cozy Irish bar with excellent service, loyal patrons, and stiff drinks, look no more! Chief Sullivan's has served as my destination watering hole in more than one occasion. It's a great spot for a date night or wild group night out. The menu contains classic cocktails, swanky handcrafted cocktails, and plenty of draft beers --there's truly something for everyone. The ambiance is friendly and cool. I don't recall the specific night, but live music often livens up the space. I get the vibe that most patrons are chill neighborhood locals. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. Last weekend I left my coat behind and was able to retrieve it the next day, thanks to a wonderfully friendly and helpful bartender. You've won my loyalty, Chief Sullivan's! I will certainly be back.

Afshin A.

Yelp
Those who drink to forget, please pay in advance! I was sad when O'Reilly's closed. At the time it was the only Irish pub in North Beach, or at least the only one I knew about! A few weeks ago I was delighted to discover that Chief Sullivan had replaced O'Reilly's. The owners have not changed the interior much. Except it is a bit brighter and less cluttered on the walls. The Guinness is poured a bit faster than I'd like to see, but it is still cold and tastes just fine! You can still get pub food too, although we did not try any on this visit. Why fill yourself up with junk when you have cold Guinness handy?
google avatar

Madison S.

Yelp
So glad to see this place back open. $5 a beer which is a bargain! Good service..... busy bar with great atmosphere. Live band when we returned a few nights later. Bar staff remember you after only one visit which is nice and welcoming. Freddie is a cool guy. Tried the bar food, fab! Went for a drink during weekend before our flight when 'friends with benedicts' was open and it seemed like a big hit.

Richard O.

Yelp
Hugely disappointing after the quality of the previous establishment, O'Reilly's. High-end restaurant prices $39.99 for Shepherd's pie and $22 for Irish breakfast. Irish breakfast was poor - no black or white pudding; no Irish sausage but chicken sausage - what was the Irish part? $10 Guinness that was served in ONE pour. Irish in name only and definitely not in caliber. Avoid. Oh at least the musician was solid and the staff was nice.
google avatar

Olga P.

Yelp
The waitress was terrible: bad attitude, rolling her eyes. When we first arrived, I asked her if the establishment had high chairs, she started at me like a deer in the headlights and answered "yes". We decided to sit outside. She came back with a high chair, explained how to access the menu, and disappeared. She came back sometime later to take our order and when we started ordering food, she told us that the kitchen was closed (should've told us that before we sat down). Then lets us know that we can order drinks. That's nice, but with a 3 year old in tow, we were not looking to drink. She also brought a 3 year old a glass, any parent can tell you that's a no no. Definitely not coming back. This place is not kid friendly. Your servers should be trained better. Worst experience in a long time.
google avatar

Jim O.

Yelp
You will not find a better bar than Chief Sullivans. The team is amazing. Great cocktails, awesome tv's, and the food is top notch. Seriously, folks it's the best. And on top of that if you are a Notre Dame fan, it's the Notre Dame bar of SF.

Drew D.

Yelp
This is the worst fucking bar i've ever been to. They were rude to me at every interaction. I would literally rather abandon my children then ever go here again.
google avatar

Bree M.

Yelp
BEST FISH AND CHIPS EVER!!! Freddy was so sweet and helpful. He did an awesome job working a lunch shift all by himself. Chief Sullivans is super clean and COVID friendly. Totally recommend. We'll be back!
google avatar

Ivy S.

Yelp
After an amazing meal around the corner, we needed a night cap and a nice hang session with friends. Id been here many years ago and remembered it was a nice little bar for doing just that. This is a perfect bar for a casual meeting with friends. The atmosphere is perfect. Lets just say that I also love a freshly made Greyhound, made with fresh grapefruit juice and always my favorite, Titos Vodka. Greyhounds just mean summer to me. I love them, especially when they are fresh. Service was excellent. The bartenders working were all warm and friendly. Like everyone was a regular. They don't have a juke box though. I really wanted to be the vibe manager that night but no luck. We were under the control of one of the employees playlists from their iphone pumped over the speakers. I begged her to let me hook my phone up but she wouldn't budge. I tried but she didn't believe in my vibe setting music capabilities. We had an awesome time. Another place that I wish I lived closer to so I could become a true regular at.

Yelp
Late review, but came here in August. Only outdoor dining was available. Nice place to have a cozy drink with someone. I came with a friend. The service was wonderfully good. Our waitress made sure our drinks were refreshed and came to chat with us in between customers. We engaged in pretty good conversation past just small talk. She seemed pretty interested in talking, and not just for tips but probably due to lack of human contact because of the pandemic. When her shift was over, she introduced us to the next waitress. This is fantastic and should be expected at every establishment. Unfortunately, good customer service is far and few inbetween. Great place to come hang out. Hopefully it returns back to normal after the pandemic. Good and popular location as well, with plenty of parking around the area.
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
I'd like the original owner/place better. It feels like an Irish pub with the stained glass and murals along with some Irish beer but they play 90's and it is more Americanized that I would prefer
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
Cool spot we stumbled soon in San Fran food is good and full bar service was really good too and friendly people
google avatar

Philip K.

Yelp
Best place in the town to watch Liverpool games! Amazing atmosphere and super friendly staff. This place is the real deal!
