Finally hitting this stop on the KCK Taco Trail. I've driven by several times and not stopped because, from the street, it looks small and busy. When everyone is lined up on the weekends to get their menudo fix, it can be uncomfortable to take up space at a Mexican restaurant as a solo diner. That's how I feel, anyway, especially as someone who is not Hispanic. Well, I shouldn't have worried by the seemingly full street parking or the people I could see inside. I circled the block and realized there was more parking on the side street. Upon walking in, I saw that there was more seating than I thought and plenty of free space.
As expected, the restaurant was full of Mexican families dining on large bowls of soup when I arrived after noon on a Saturday. There are several large tables, some 2-3 seat tables, and barstools along the counter. I was greeted in English and shown to a table. My waitress brought me a menu already turned to the English side. I was pleasantly surprised by this only because the only web presence for Chihuahua Mexican is a Facebook page that's entirely in Spanish.
I ordered an apple soda and green chilaquiles with Mexican-style scrambled eggs (tomatoes, peppers, and onions). My food was brought out quickly and I was brought two bottles of hot sauce. Typical to this region of Mexico, the sauces (red-orange and pale green) are puréed smooth and are very spicy with the red a bit milder than the green. While nothing I ordered stood out as being "the best I've ever had", it was all very good. Kind of like going to an American diner. I suspect that whenever you eat here the food will be good, as you expected, and taste just how you had it the last time. There's a sort of diner-like efficiency and consistency that I appreciated here.
It looks like they have some tasty taco fillings here, so I'll be back sometime to try something other than breakfast. And they also have beer, which isn't common for spots like this. Pay at the counter when you're done. No TVs, but an overhead speaker was playing Mexican music. I would recommend this to anyone who likes authentic Mexican food. And if you don't live in this area and/or aren't as comfortable with speaking Spanish, you won't feel at all awkward at this family-owned restaurant.
