12 Best Things to Do in Tokyo With Kids | Condé Nast Traveler

"Foxes, owls, rabbits, dogs, cats, and even penguins—Tokyo’s animal cafes offer the chance to get up close and personal with all kinds of creature company. Not all species fare well in cramped quarters, however, meaning the less reputable of these joints can be depressing affairs. Luckily, hedgehogs don’t need much room to roam. At ChikuChikuCAFE, the little guys seem perfectly content to snooze in their glass-encased pens. The clean, cheery place makes for a welcome respite from the mayhem of nearby Takeshita Street. This is something of a goofy, guilty pleasure. Nevertheless, younger children will get a kick of out the roly-poly critters. After a few hours of sightseeing, give the culture-fest a break and let your kids indulge in some animal therapy." - Diana Hubbell

Dropped by for a 30min time slot to play, feed and take pics with the hedgehogs. We chose to feed them live worms and wow hedgehogs got sharp teeth! We got a really well behaved and sleepy hedgehog who food coma-ed after a few worms 🤣 complimentary drinks at the machine with purchase of time slot!

Paid 1430yen per pax for 30min session, where 2 persons share 1 fixed cage (you can only touch that 1 hedgehog), you cannot change cages (you can not touch more than 1 hedgehog). If you want to touch more than 1 hedgehog you'd have to opt for the 1h session. Also paid 440yen for a snack (live worm) for the hedgehog too. The hedgehog I was assigned to is unfortunately not interested in the worms. I have to say that this experience is sadly not for me. The hedgehog seem really scared and sleepy. When I tried to touch it, it will jump and in turn I'll jump too. I felt sooooo bad for scaring it. Had to forcefully carry/scoop them up (as advised by the staff) but even after doing so, it will run away really quickly. When I leave the hedgehog alone it will just sleep in a corner. Probably because it's a nocturnal animal afterall, which makes me wonder why isn't the opening hour at night instead. Left the place feeling a lil guilty and disappointed. Giving it 2 stars for the nice & friendly staff, the ability to get up close with the cute hedgehogs, and how the place is well-maintained & kept clean. Maybe I was just unlucky to get assigned to an inactive hedgehog.

I was rather let down by this experience which was my first. It felt like a complete waste of time and money. Firstly, I paid for two 30 min sessions for two people and two rounds of hedgehog food. We were told we would have only one hedgehog allocated which was fine. But I later was told we were assigned to one hedgehog together. So if we walked in separately and asked for 30 mins each we would pay the same amount and have one hedgehog each. But instead we paid the same amount and one person sits there while the other tries to pick up the hedgehog. I think this policy is flawed. We were “strongly” recommended a hedgehog which I thought great, let’s go with staff recommendation. How wrong I was. The hedgehog was scared to be held and wanted to sleep. It kept pressing itself against one corner of its pen. After a couple of tries we didn’t want to persist with trying to force pick up a scared tired hedgehog. So we sat there watching a motionless hedgehog instead. The only time it paid any attention was when we tried to feed it. We got one of each, crackers and worms. Our particular hedgehog enjoyed the worms but didn’t want any crackers at all. You would think if staff was going to “strongly” recommend a particular hedgehog they would also know if the hedgehog had a preference to worms or crackers. Many animal carers do. The whole experience just felt like a tourist trap with so called friendly staff that just say whatever to sell you product. I would not recommend going there nor would I go again. Also FYI after this poor experience I found out hedgehogs are actually nocturnal animals. So why are these hedgehog cafes set up during the day to give paying customers a rubbish experience. This is just my personal experience.

Myself and my partner paid for the 30 minute session and were assigned 1 hedgehog which the staff explained before purchasing. Sadly our hedgehog Akane didn't like being picked up, kept trying to hide behind the objects and was only interested in us when we were giving it food and as soon as the food was finished it wanted to sleep again as they are nocturnal and shouldn't be awake during the day. The staff were nice but overall I left feeling let down, a bit sorry for disturbing the hedgehog and money not well spent.

The staff were wonderful and very friendly, but the hedgehogs were a mixed bag. I didn't know what to expect but we were given two hedgehogs to interact with - one was constantly running on the wheel and had no interest in food or interaction, and the other was quite happy with food/interaction but tired very quickly and started napping on the heat pad, so I let it rest. Clearly, the poor hogs must be exhausted doing a shift with constant interaction, so my emotions are mixed. I commend the staff for their friendliness and general service, but I believe hedgehog cafes are not great for the spiky little friends. Please bear that in mind for anyone who may want a quick photo and social media experience that the animals have emotions too.

Friendly staff. We were assigned 2 hedgehogs for 3 people. One was hiding in the corner, the other was friendly although on edge when we first tried to touch it. You can’t touch their spines so you can only pet their belly, if they allow you. If you feed them, they will show interest, but otherwise, they tend to hide away or seem like they want to be left alone. Overall, I recommend pig petting over hedgehogs.

I loved this place! One of the highlights of my recent trip to Japan. These little hedgehogs will brighten your day, and it makes me happy that it seems like these little hedgehogs are so well taken care of. Highly recommend! It's one of the more ethical animal cafes in the area.

had fun during the one hour that we had here. staff were accommodating and explained to us the different types of hedgehogs, and taught us how to interact with them.

Yelp
I had a hedgehog for 6 years and was missing my baby, so I had to visit Chiku Chiku. To interact with all hedgehogs, you have to pay 2.4k yen, which gives you an hour of interactive time. To interact with just one, you have to pay 1.3k yen, which gives you half an hour. Snacks are an extra fee. Each snack costs 400 yen, doesnt matter which one. When picking a hedgehog, they ask if you want an active one or a chill one. We wanted the cute chubby active one and boy, he was a handful but in the cutest way possible. They tell you the rules on how to interact. Was sad I couldnt pet their spikes because my baby loved that, but it depends on the hedgehog. Plus, with it def may stress a hedgehog since they dont know you at all. They will also tell you when your time is up. If they catch you dropping the hedgehog high up, they will automatically fine you. I dont remember what the fine was, but they will state the price as they state the rules. Overall, I recommend! Half an hour was enough for one baby. Glad to have visited.

Yelp
First time at an interactive animal cafe, so glad we chose hedgehogs. Or harinezumi in Japanese (needle mice is the literal translation, which is apropos). Super nice staff who explain and demonstrate how to interact with the hedgehogs. You can wear the gloves they offer you but don't have to as long as you follow the handling rules, Hedgehogs are nocturnal so though you are allowed to interact with all of them, we chose only two pretty active ones:Rinrin and Kook. Rinrin was pretty nervous but Kook was very playful so we spent the bulk of the time with him. Kook's favorite toy was a plush fish that must've smelled good because he followed it around like a dog. We fed him little grubs and pellets. His terrarium was decorated to be a bakery. Super cute. I really enjoyed the time. Only critique was it felt like 80 degrees in there, which allegedly was for the hedgehogs but honestly too warm in my opinion. We got a free sticker to take as a souvenir.

Yelp
This was my 3rd choice after getting shut out of the capybara and owl cafes, but I had a nice therapeutic time holding the hedgehogs. Some were more willing to be held than others with snacks being the great equalizer. One of the other non-hedgehogs tried to crawl up my sleeve with a member of the super friendly English speaking staff willing to help out. Nice atmosphere to just wind down - they provide gloves if you're a little skittish but they were optional. Fun fun.

Yelp
We didn't know how to make an appointment but fortunately they had two available slots left so my two children were able to play with the hedgehogs. The one person who speaks English was very accommodating and nice. She allowed my husband and I to go in a take pictures. She also took great photos of us at the end. I would totally recommend this place but make sure to make reservations in advance.

Yelp
I wanted to interact with all animals so I paid for the full hour and was able to feed them all. The staff is so friendly! They spoke English and helped me interact with the animals. One of the staff told me which ones I can pick up with gloves and which ones I didn't need any. She told me which ones loves butt scratches LOL There is unlimited drinks and you can sit and enjoy your time in there with the animals, but we didn't stay too long. We just went around and fed each one and took photos of each little cage with their cute decor. At the end, we were able to take photos with our favorite animal. We had such a great time and would come again.

Yelp
I got to pick vacation locations for the first time in 25 years. I picked Japan and my wife agreed ..... which basically meant that, as long as I was in the country of Japan, she could dictate everywhere we went. A hedgehog cafe was near the top of her wish list. She practically needed a shotgun to get me to go with her. I just don't get the attraction of places like this. Take a small animal.... an owl, seal, cat or hedgehog.... put them in small cages, and charge customers to come in and play with them... all while sipping coffee or tea. Obviously they cater to young girls with the music selections they play here. So incredibly annoying girl pop music. The staff is sugary sweet and enthusiastic as they up-sell longer visiting times and hedgehog snack choices. I thought 30 minutes was just fine but NNNOOOOOO! My wife went for a full hour. Not since high school had a an hour seemed like a day. Since we upgraded time, we were able to play with all of the hedgehogs, not just a single critter. You sit on a stool in front of an acrylic cage, wear leather gloves and pick up the little rodents. Many places are only open during the day....which makes perfect sense. The animals are nocturnal so all they want to do is sleep while the girls try to pick them up and pose for pictures. They don't want to played with, and try to squirm out of your hands and back into their cages. So much fun! Get me the hell out of here. Between the music, the scared and uninterested creatures and the fact that this whole thing cost over sixty bucks, I could not get out of there fast enough. Animals are meant to be out in the wild. I hated every part of it. My wife, on the other hand, had an amazing time and loved every second......hence the 2 star rating.

Yelp
This was an underwhelming experience. The hedgehogs are nocturnal and aren't playful during the day. You'll feel bad for waking them up. They'll only respond to you if you have food and then go back to sleep. The cafe also provides unlimited tea drinks for you but that's obviously not the main reason for why people go here. At the end, they'll put the hedgehog in a small bathtub and take a picture for you. They have to constantly feed the hedgehog for the hedgehog to stay in the bath tub and take a picture with you. It really seemed the hedgehog did not want any human interaction at all. Staff were friendly and welcoming. They spoke English.

Yelp
The first hedgehog cafe I've been to, but it was a great experience! The staff speaks English and are very friendly. I felt bad waking my hedgehog, Plum, up, but she fell asleep in my hand and had a nice nap. You pay the fee, pick a hedgehog, and play with them for the time you have and you can also get snacks for them, which they will wake up and venture out of their corners for. They rotate the hedgehogs so they aren't over-handled. You get free tea and water, but i didn't have time for that nonsense. I'm very apprehensive around animals, but Plum was the sweetest and it didn't take long for me to warm up to her and haver her in my hand. You should definitely check out this cafe. It wasn't too busy since it was out of the way, so it's not overwhelming.

Yelp
This place is beyond adorable. I loved every minute of it - really, it was such a joy to be there. The hedgehogs are very cute, albeit not as interactive as cats or dogs might be at a similar cafe. But, they are nocturnal, so you can't really expect them to be thrilled that you are waking them up from their slumber. The real pleasure is how sweet the staff is, and how well presented the cafe is, and the tiny scenes in which the hedgehogs spend their day.

Yelp
Cute place that tries. Unfortunately, hedgehogs are nocturnal and only wake up for food and then quickly burrow back to sleep. The only nice hedgie was a chubby 2 year old who was relaxed and enjoyed the snack bowls we bought. Snacks cost 400 yen EACH and you have a choice of either pellets or worms. Great souviners and small selection of drinks you serve yourself.

Yelp
This place was pretty much what I expected... and I didn't have extremely high expectations. I thought it was pretty straight forward. Its a little shop where you sit and hold/feed hedgehogs. You're set up at a station with a small glass "home" and you sit there with the animal. Reading some of these reviews.. I kind of wonder what they were expecting lol. A hedgehog isn't a dog. You come to this place for the novelty. You get to hang with a hedgehog and grab some pics. Where else would you do that?! I've seen these cute animals on insta so many times and I was pumped to see one in person and hold one. Yes, they aren't extremely active and yes, they only want to "play" for food. Kind of like me :P Anyways, I spent about 2000 yen for 30 minutes and 2 snacks (a tiny bowl of pellets and another of worms). I enjoyed the experience and would recommend to someone who has a similar interest. If you're expecting a boatload of entertainment from the hedgehog... don't come. Grab lunch, come meet a hedgehog and then run across the street to many massive shopping centers - fun filled day. PS. the music... a reviewer was so upset about this... clearly your first time in japan! Hate to break it to you... but most places play girly pop music. Heck.. there are vans driving down the streets of shibuya blasting it out of speakers. Seems like he was more mad at his wife for her choice of tourist attraction and taking it out on this cafe. Just sayin...

Selvynna T.

Yelp
The place is clean and cute. Staff spoke English and were very nice. We paid upfront for 30 minutes and got a booth with a hedgehog called Lala. She seemed very afraid of people. The staff later replaced her with Plum, who was more relaxed. But hedgehogs are nocturnal and naturally want to bury and sleep during the day. So you are essentially waking them up for a few minutes while you feed them or pick them up, and they go right back to sleeping in a corner. Felt a little bad for them so I just kind of let my time run out without disturbing them.
