The Best Restaurants in Galveston, Texas | Eater Houston

"Located directly across Seawall Boulevard from Stewart Beach, family-owned Chilangos Brothers Taco Shop is an ideal spot for a quick meal. With its trendy, luchador-themed dining room and seriously tasty Mexican food, the taco shop has quickly become a Galveston necessity. The tacos here are picture-perfect, but Chilangos Brothers is best known for the Machete, an 18-inch quesadilla stuffed with lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream, and your choice of meat." - Brianna Griff

Google
It took 30 mins for 2 tacos and 1 guarache and they had no customers. Plus the tacos were cold. The meat had no flavor. First time and last time. Also barely any meat on the taco also the grill onion is extra.

Google
It was mid... the food was good, they were just out of alot of things and what I ordered didn't look like the picture that I looked at which was the reason we weren't to go try it. It was still very tasty, just not what I was expecting. Reasonably priced, for the amount of food combined with the mid atmosphere. If I ever eat there again it will be for a quick snack or lunch and I will get the food to go and enjoy it in a more exciting atmosphere. Definitely don't go there for a dinner experience.

Google
Was looking for some good tacos and found this place while searching online. I had barbacoa tacos that were some of the best I’ve had. This place is off the beaten trail but certainly worth a short drive. I would certainly return.

Google
A very hole in the wall, local restaraunt vibe. Had the birria burrito. The meat was so tender and flavorful! It came with rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream. I highly recommend the horchata as well. If you are looking for amazing burritos I highly recommend this spot.

Casa de Salazar

Google
Seems like a trendy place. The tacos are good. I wasn't impressed with the menudo or the birria ramen. But the tacos are good. I've been back several times now, and the quality stays the same, which is hard to keep up with all the specific ingredients that they keep on hand. The tacos de cabeza were delicious and unique. I can't think of very many places around that even offer these. Add in the suadero, cecina, and lengua, and I'd be pretty hard pressed to think of any other local shop making these offerings. This place is a gem that you shouldn't overlook, especially if you're really into tacos. I mean real authentic tacos.

Google
This place is proof the best places are little known "hole in the walls"! I stopped in for lunch on the recommendation of a Coast Guard buddy who is stationed here. I found the menu to be a bit intimidating because I don't know my Hispanic foods that well. I took a stab at it and ordered a Texana Torta and a drink. It was slightly spicy and absolutely off the chain!! It took a few minutes, but they fix everything once it's ordered. Ingredients were fresh, my torta was hot, and it was enough for 2 meals. The owner was circulating checking on tables and customers during the lunch hour. To have that kind of food plus a manager who cares -- the Bros just got my repeat business whenever I'm in the area!!

Google
Do not sleep on this place. I've been to many taco joints but this one ranks WAAAY up. Their horchata is top tier and so is the cook. You can see it in the way they perfectly dice their onions. Everything was seasoned just right, even the taco sauce. I even ordered a second dish after - the tostadas! Should've gotten more tacos though, because they were *chef's kiss* 🤌

Google
Decided to try out this place after a day at the beach. Had the Gringa which was basically an al pastor quesadilla. Birria was flavorful but portion sizes were a bit small. Very cheesy though.Ambience was great with a lot of good music and decorations.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! We tried it for the first time today and I can't believe we've been missing out for so long. Everything we ordered was delicious. We had the chorizo cheese dip, guacamole, kids quesadilla with fries, Quesabirras, and the Birria Burrito. Great portions and everything was fresh. The staff was so friendly and all smiles. It was a really great experience all around. It's family friendly. Everything was so tasty! We can't wait to come back and try more menu items. Next on our list is the Birria Ramen!

Yelp
June 11, 2024 Stopped in to try out this taco place... and i didn't even get tacos!! I had 2 beef tostados and beef alambre [see photos] Beef alambre had fat on the meat...and I don't like chewing on that, but the ground beef tostados were yummy! [some of the meat on the alambre was ham/pork not beef... which is fine but, not what i paid for]

Yelp
Authentic, casual, and small spot with great food! However, they charge a hidden service fee ~3% if you look at the receipt. Service was overall good, and there's plenty of indoor seating. You order at the register and they will bring out your order to the table. It also smelt heavily of smoke, even though there was a no smoking sign, which made the experience less pleasant. We got the blue demon torta with pastor, egg, ham, and cheese. It was enormous! Half of it really fills you up. Also got a gordita with beef, which was super tasty. The tortillas are thick, warm, and chewy. The lemonade was refreshing and sweet! There's also a water station that is self-serve. Parking is free and plenty right outside, and there's a small donut and convenient store nearby in the same complex

Yelp
In Galveston on vacation, looked on Yelp for some quick eats near me hotel. Chilangos popped up and decided to give it a try. Especially when I seen birria on the menu lol. Got there, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. I came in at a slow time so I was able take notice of the decor which was extremely cool. IMPORTANT: They make your order once you place your order so don't expect food to be out in 30 sec. I appreciate the quality and freshness of the Quesabirria and the Asada fries. Quesabirria w/ consume - 6/10 - everything smelled great. Taste was okay though. Meat wasn't very flavorful like usual birria. Consume was missing some flavor as well. Felt like it was missing some salt. Had to finish the tacos with their green sauce which was a 8/10. Asada Fries - 8.5 - This is a winner!! The fries cooked to perfection. Slight crunch and good saltiness. The steak kinda reminded me of sausage but nonetheless was good. The contrast with the hot fries and steak with the cold lettuce, pico and jalapeños topped with a good white queso. I loved every bite! Definitely worth visiting this restaurant especially since Galveston isn't loaded with unique options

Yelp
Finally stopped in to try Chilangos Brothers. We've always wanted to try their tortas, but we both ended up getting tacos. We got the chorizo queso to start and it was one of the best things, love their chorizo. My husband got the Machette with asado and carnitas - he got through about half, but said it was fantastic. His favorite though was the rojo salsa it came with. I got the quesobirria tacos and they were great, well filled and seasoned. I just wish the consume already had the onions stewing for extra flavor. Fun place and quick service. Busy with lots of families, so hope to see this place do well. We'll be back to try the tortas!

Yelp
This new place in town is everything! In Galveston we have tons of little places where you get tacos and authentic ones at that. Chilangos just opened up over the summer and trust me. They got it right. I ordered the Bedia tacos and they were cooked to perfection with cheese melted deliciously. Street tacos were the bomb. The Carne Asada was the bomb. Everything we ordered was delicious. It is a very clean environment. Limited seating, but clean and cool. You gotta try this place!

Yelp
Food was made to order and so good. I will definitely be back because the menu is amazing. Ordered the Machete (18 inches of goodness) with a side of Charro beans and a side of rice. Also had the Turimisu and flan for desert also very good. Don't sleep on this place. Service was fast and friendly and the place was clean. Come here if you want good food.

Yelp
We just ate at Chilangos. WARNING: if you want fastfood or are in a rush, go to taco bell. If you want really good Street Tacos, Tortas are other food, eat here. It is worth the wait. We order the La Cubana Torte, 5 Asada street tacos and a El Machata Quesadilla. OMG, all of it was amazing!!!!

Yelp
This place is great! Each time I've been here the food has been top notch! Might be the best Mexican on the island. The quesadilla (or signature machete if you're starving or splitting) is amazing. Tried the steak and marinated pork versions and pork is the winner. The staff are friendly and efficient. The strip mall it's in is nothing special, but don't let it fool you about the quality inside.

Yelp
Excellent and authentic food. Made fresh and tasty. As soon as I put the salsa and rice the freshness came to tingle my taste buds. The el Diablo burrito is huge!!!! And made to specification. Amazing service. Smiling faces. Clean ambiance. Mild music and very authentic.

Yelp
Went late about 37 min to close. Ordered the pastor, birria tacos. The recommendation we got from others was spot on! These tacos were simply amazing!! The sauces were spicy and added just the right stuff to make the perfect meal! I even brought the sauce home! Folks this mom & pop should be on your list! It's not much to look at from the outside but don't let that put you off. The folks that run the place are all smiles and the food and atmosphere inside is perfect! Get here or miss out!!

Yelp
I feel like we have been on a winning streak on the island but DAMN!! Once again I have had this place in my bin for a must try and today we did and once again my husband and I were pleased. They had a sign up saying to go only because the AC was out and to dine at our own risk. We found nothing to complain about as far as the temperature was concerned at 6pm. We each had 2 tacos. I went for 2 pork street tacos and he had 2 birria tacos. Outstanding! We were even given chips and salsa without asking. Customer service was outstanding and tacos were 10 out or 10. I love places like this. We will be back!

Yelp
Food is great, definitely recommend the Quesobirrias, they were the perfect combo of crispy and juicy and l immediately went to get another order. The vibe of the place includes murals of iconic characters and Mexican culture/history! The staff is very friendly and answer as many questions and recommendations as needed. I was looking for a good taco spot on the island and this definitely is number one on my list.

Yelp
A hole in the wall but the food is DELICIOUS. The staff is very courteous and professional. This place was so good my friend and I came back the following day to eat again. You can tell everything is made with care and integrity. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We visited this restaurant after a doctor's appointment. I used Google to find nearby restaurants, and surprisingly, this one was right behind the clinic. The location is convenient with ample parking. The menu offers a unique twist, deviating from the typical Tex-Mex fare. The food was delicious, and the portion sizes were reasonable for the prices. Although the menu above the register might be a bit challenging to decipher, they provide menu cards that you can take to your table for easier reading. Orders and payments are made at the register. The ambiance is on the darker side, featuring painted walls adorned with images of characters from a Mexican TV comedy and wrestling masks. I give it less than 5 stars because they don't provide chips and salsa while you wait, and the strong smell of cigarette smoke inside makes the dining experience uncomfortable. For my next visit, I would consider ordering takeout.

Yelp
Ordered from here and it was absolutely delicious Mmmm . Had tacos de cabeza and de lengua.... Making sure I get this again before heading back to Arizona

Yelp
Fun, new taco shop. Great atmosphere, great artwork, friendly service, good food. This place makes me want to start watching Lucha Libre!

Kevin L.

Yelp
Really good food at affordable prices! I will absolutely be back. With that said, some feedback for the owners; - The person at the register needs to be friendly and engaging, not just an order taker. Trying to interact with her was like pulling teeth. She wasn't rude, so not complaining, but that is where the entire experience begins for your customers so make sure you are well represented. - Upgrade the plastic utensils. I don't mind plastic (although prefer corn based compostable) but at least don't buy stuff so cheap they are nearly unusable. - Get that trash area cleaned up. I know you are newly opened and just getting organized, but having clean stuff near the dirty trash does not instill confidence that the kitchen is not the same. I want to stress I think what you are doing with your food is fantastic and I do wish you the most success. But these things can make a difference.

Yelp
Giving 4 stars because I want to see the business succeed. I went in for the first time and ordered 4 carne asada tacos and a side of charro beans to go... The menu wasn't the most straight forward but I managed. I didn't see an option to buy a taco plate with sides, it was Al a cart. @ $15.75 for 4 tacos and some beans it was a little pricier than a taco truck. There was enough meat on the tacos, but it was extremely over-cooked, the salsa that comes with the tacos were excellent. The beans were good, but I got such a small portion, at nearly $3 I was expecting more. Maybe it would've been different if I ate at the restaurant. Service was good, cashier was friendly. I'll give it another shot, but I was left wanting more.

Yelp
Great AUTHENTIC tacos Best in the island 100% Get suadero or trompo tacos or burritos. SO GOOD

Yelp
Came by for a late night meal and was very impressed! Tried the chile rellano meal, carne asada tacos, birria tacos, cheese curd tacos, and the Alambré - everything was delicious! The owner is very friendly and extremely accommodating. The atmosphere felt authentic and was comfortable. Would definitely bring my friends and family here!

Elworth W.

Yelp
Very good authentic tacos! Will be coming here more often for lunch! It's perfect. I didn't wait long either

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised. The food was great. The atmosphere was cool. We met the owner and he was polite and helpful. I had Barria tacos and they were phenomenal. I'm really glad I found this place. I'll definitely go back every time I visit Galveston. Parking was good. Easily accessible for the handicapped. Good seating.

Adan I.

Yelp
Birria lovers assemble! By far the most delicious and authentic birria in Texas! Food was freshly made to order and well worth the short wait. We had the queso birria tacos and they were 10 out of 10. Simply delicious! Will definitely be back before we leave the island to try the Sudadero tacos!

Cynthia L.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food absolutely delicious! Decorated uniquely and the service is amazing. Thank you for the best tacos!

Laura D.

Yelp
I ordered the quesabirria tacos and my boyfriend got the machete. Generous portions and good flavor. Great balance of juicy birria, and crispy corn tortillas. My only complaint is that the hot sauce is not spicy, but next time I'll ask the cook if maybe he can hook me up with something with a little more kick. The vibe is really cool and fun. Great place to bring the family when they come to visit.

John V.

Yelp
We had gone the Chilangos Brothers upon recommendation of our friends. It surely didn't disappoint. The food was freshly prepared for our order and tasted phenomenal. Service was fast and accurate, and the ambiance was simple and clean. We will return.

Samantha P.

Yelp
Food was amazing, just the location isn't the best. Service was okay as well. Wish rice and beans came with most orders, but other than that would come back

Remington C.

Yelp
Awesome food, and the service is nice too. It also has a good ambiance to just chill and eat your tacos. Best taco place I have found in Galveston, and I go as often as I can!

Charles M.

Yelp
Authentic Taco shop with tacos, tortas, burritos and few specialty items. First time here so I asked the owner what was recommended. I went for the Quesabirria and for me this was the best bang for your buck, it was 3 corn quesadillas packed with birria meat and cheese served with broth for dipping for $9.99 These were good and very filling. Also tried tacos ($2.79 ea) to get a good tasting of foods, tried Al Pastor ( a little off as I have had the real deal in Mexico), Suadero shredded pork which was good and Asada which surprised me because it's not really what I ordered since I asked for chicharron. Tacos were decent, again, I know good Tacos. It was a To-go order so I do plan to visit again to dine in and try the Tortas and El Machete. I do agree with one post about keep the area clean as I noticed tables were not clean and the floor had food on it. It was 3 pm, so past lunchtime and plenty of time to tidy up. Hopefully this place makes it as it is the only one with this type of offering. They did charge a little extra for using card, but expected as it is a start-up business.
