The 23 Best Restaurants In Providence - Providence - The Infatuation

"Chilangos has been around for more than 20 years. Small and intent on staying that way, it’s the kind of restaurant where the owners always greet you at the door. If the weather’s nice, sit at a patio table and order a margarita and vinegary verduras en escabeche to start. Then go all-in with the cochinita pibil roasted in banana leaves, which impart a lightly sweet and grassy note, or a gooey quesadilla with hibiscus flowers. Then, sink back in your chair and lazily spoon some flan into your mouth between tiny sips of fernet—we call that bliss." - grace kelly

Chilangos - Review - Olneyville - Providence - The Infatuation

"Chilangos is a cozy cantina that’s been around for more than 20 years, and it’s the kind of restaurant where the owners always greet you at the door. Generally, it’s just a great place for a relaxing dinner after a long, active day. If it’s nice out, grab a patio table and order a margarita and some verduras en escabeche to start before digging into the cochinita pibil roasted in banana leaves or a gooey quesadilla with hibiscus." - Grace Kelly

I had an incredible first-time experience at Chilangos this evening! From drinks to dessert, everything exceeded my expectations. The appetizers and meals were outstanding—especially the chips and salsa, queso, and burrito. The staff was so friendly and attentive, checking in often and clearing plates promptly. We ended the evening with the most amazing flan and churros (the best I’ve ever had). To top it off, they noticed it was my birthday and surprised me with flan, a candle, and a song. The food is phenomenal, but it’s truly the people here who make it unforgettable. This was my first visit, but definitely not my last!

Google
I think it’s cute. This is my friends’ FAVORITE place to go. I really liked the soup I had. Would definitely come back for that. It is street parking only here I think. My boyfriend thought some things were a bit too bland himself but I thought everything was fine.

Google
Stars mostly for service but never had arrachera this dry or flavorless. Nopales also didn’t taste like anything. No heat at all on the salsa so felt more Rhode Island palatte to me. Sad bc the chilangos name excited me having lived in Mexico City for a period

This place doesn't get the attention it deserves. Has been a favorite of mine for years and is still just as great as the first time I went. The al pastor burrito never fails to make me do my happy-food-dance.

An Unforgettable Mexican Experience - A True Culinary Treasure Dining at Chilangos Restaurant was not just a meal -- it was an experience that touched the heart and awakened every sense. From the moment I walked in, I felt the warmth, the colors, the music, and above all, the genuine hospitality that makes you feel like part of the family. I started with the queso fundido with onions and rajas, and let me tell you -- it was the best cheese dish I have ever had in my life. Creamy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced -- each bite was a burst of comfort and tradition. For my main dish, I had the enchiladas potosinas, and they were simply divine. Authentic, vibrant, and cooked with a level of care that you can truly taste. These aren't just enchiladas -- they're a journey to San Luis Potosí on a plate. And let's talk about dessert -- the flan was pure perfection. Smooth, silky, and rich in flavor. Our server Aidan recommended it, along with the margaritas, and both were absolutely spot-on! Aidan's attentiveness, kindness, and knowledge of the menu made our evening even more special. His service was exceptional. Every moment at Chilangos was filled with joy. The food, the drinks, the service -- everything exceeded expectations. This place doesn't just serve meals... it serves memories. Thank you, Chilangos, for sharing your culture, your flavors, and your heart. I'll be back soon -- and I'll be bringing friends.

Google
First time coming here and the food was really good. The service though was awful, server took a while to take our order and didn’t really talk to us. He wouldn’t clear the table and didn’t check in on us once while we were eating. He came by at the end just to basically call us fat? Lmfao never again

Google
Cocktails were amazing. I was disappointed because they were out of mole that day but I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes and it was phenomenal. Can’t wait to come back here.

Google
Service was great, drinks were mixed to perfection! I had the tamarind margarita and the mango margarita! The atmosphere is really nice and clean, they also have a nice closed patio. But as for the food, i am not a fan. The carne asada tacos was misssing that Sazônnn!(seasoning) It tasted like the shaved steak you would get to make steak and cheese sandwiches but they didn’t season it and it was very dry. I was charged extra for salsa verde for my tacos, which i found rather odd. Im not cheap or anything but come on now. The type of people that would love this place is the same type of people that like chipotle mayo in there street tacos. But other than that. Great drinks and service !!

Yelp
Thus far this is the most satisfying Mexican restaurant in town. The margaritas are a treat, they prepare their own mango and guava juice. A delight,

Yelp
I used to come here all the time when I lived in Providence. In the three times I've been back over the last few years, I've had a couple stellar experiences and one subpar experience. But I'm someone that believes anyone can have an off day so overall this place is really great. First and foremost, get the margarita. They are the best I've ever had. Also, get the tacos. Even as an app they're so great. I got the shrimp and a veg recently. I've enjoyed all of the entrees I've ever gotten. Honorable mention is the shrimp Diablo. Super spicy and delightful. The interior is warm, cozy, and a perfect combo of lit enough so you can see but dark enough to set a mood for spilling tea or flirting with your date. Equal parts good for girls night and good for date night. The not so great: I got flautas once and they fell flauta (haha). Also, it's sometimes a one man show so service can be slow especially if you need refills so be sure to order multiple drinks at a time, or better yet a pitcher. Street parking can be a real pain but sometimes you get lucky on a side street. Definitely worth a visit if you've never been!

Yelp
I went to the restaurant with high hopes. Pretty much every item we wanted to order was unavailable. When we finally put in the order, my husband's food came after an interminable wait and mine never arrived. The waiter was a very earnest young man, but clearly something happened that he totally forgot to put in the order for my food. he was very apologetic, but nevertheless, it kind of ruined our dinner.

Yelp
I've been a big fan of Chilangos for many years now. I've never not finished my meal .. Until recently. My appetite just didn't cut it, so I took the rest of my unfinished meal (a few nachos & one carnitas taco) home. I didn't have high hopes. Neither of those things have a good reputation for maintaining their quality after sitting in the fridge & then consequently being reheated. BUT THEY WERE. They actually really were. Chilangos pulled off the impossible: Tacos & nachos tasting delicious, even after being reheated in a microwave. Consider me very impressed. Also the bar staff is great here. They know how to make a perfectly ratioed margarita. The real deal.

Yelp
I personally didn't like the street corn (didn't expect it to be a soup dish). The other two dishes were very good! My friend ordered burrito to go and I was told that was amazing as well. The place was busy on a regular week day without a wait though. I liked the cozy neighborhood feel of the restaurant.

Yelp
The food was authentic as well as incredible and the drinks were delicious too. The service was great.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place because the pics looked amazing but the ck tortilla soup was so lacking in flavor and the pork grinds on it were stale. I did like the tacos. Would t come here again.
google avatar

Lauren O.

Yelp
So, I tried coming here once and it was packed and we didn't want to wait over an hour for a table but we made another attempt and got in!! It was so worth the re attempt at coming. It's cozy in there and the staff IS SO FRIENDLY. Like everyone, even if they aren't directly taking care of you are so great. Our server gave great reconnections. I honestly had the best guava margarita I've ever had!! My husband liked his regular one a lot too! We picked a variety of tacos and chips/ salsa followed by a churro. There are so many taco varieties. Everything was so great we can't wait to come back! I came because of a buns and bites recommendation from CT. She was so right!!
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
Loved Chilangos. Went here on recommendation from Buns and Bites and this did not miss. Purposely was looking for a great margarita, we were told this place had the best, I can agree! It's a small place inside, not too many booths and tables but has a real authentic home feel to it. Servers were very nice and an older gentlemen kept walking around to make sure everyone was happy with their meal and if he could get us anything else. We started out with some chips and salsa, salsa was homemade and had a slight spicy kick to it on the backend, loved it. Chips were crispy and felt full, nothing worst than a chip that breaks off easily. For an entree I got two tacos, one carne asada and one chorizo. Meat was juicy and tender, really wish I had gotten a third, it was that good! If you want to go to this place you have to be prepared to wait or try and kept them at an off-peak time, they don't take reservations which can speak to the quality of this restaurant, can't wait to return!

Yelp
OMG, best Mexican food we've had. Really wonderful family-owned and operated restaurant. Warm, innovative and inviting with great mom-made dishes. Shared the Huarache de Mole Verde, delicate and delicious. The mole, tacos, and enchilada were devine. Flan wonderful. And Max, the host,/owner could not have been nicer or more helpful. Just go.
google avatar

Yelp
Surprisingly I haven't been to this place so far. Got the enchiladas verdes, tortilla soup, pork roja tamale & tacos. Got the granada cocktail, was very balanced, refreshing & didn't taste very spicy. The enchiladas and tamale were pretty good. The tortilla soup was Aok. Got tacos w/carne asada & chipotle chicken. I wasn't aware that the different meat options were priced differently (chicken was 2$, carne asada 3$, Al pastor 5$). The tacos tasted pretty good but were pretty small. Wish I knew about that. The main entrees cost approx 17-22$, bit pricey in my opinion. Overall I'd give this place 3.5 stars.

Yelp
I have been coming to Chilangos off and on since they opened their doors. I have always enjoyed their moles and enchiladas. Recently, I had their Arrachera. It was a $23 dish. Unfortunately. , this was a very poor quality of meat, as it was stringy and difficult to cut into. It did not seem like it was tenderized. I ate it because I was hungry but o was extremely disappointed and sadly, it affected my bowels poorly the next morning. I'd like to ask the owners to make sure they serve their customers a tenderized piece of meat that is of decent quality and not the cheapest quality you can buy. The service was also not very attentive. I was disappointed. I may give them a second chance but for I now will be going more to other local Mexican restaurants over this one at this time.

Yelp
Took a shot and tried Chilangos and it was absolutely amazing. I'm from California so it would take a lot to impress me... but that they certainly did! Food is so fresh and tastes so good. We got tacos and enchiladas - definitely recommend. The service and ambiance were great as well. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
I visited Chilangos on a weekday night. My friend and I ordered the queso fundido with chorizo & green peppers as an appetizer. The queso fundido had a fun cheese pull! For my entree, I ordered three tacos: lengua, asada, and the brisket special with fig jam and brie cheese. I liked the brisket special the best. The salsa verde they provided wasn't the spiciest, I should have asked for hot sauce. They had a pretty wide selection of meats to choose from, and they also varied by price. I also tried the agua frescas as well; hibiscus strawberry and horchata. Both weren't too sweet, but still refreshing. I think Chilangos would be good to visit for a first date or catch-up with a small group of friends. It's a small but very cozy restaurant, with indoor and outdoor seating. I'd definitely return!
google avatar

Yelp
One of our favorite places in the whole world!! Chilangos never disappoints us!! Our go to is always Enchiladas potosinas, there's something about the crunchiness of the cheese stuffed tacos, the creamy poblano sauce, topped with steak and grilled corn. We always order a side of rice because is absolutely delicious!! Chips and salsa to entertain our hunger is always a must 1, 2 or 3 margaritas with a tajin rim ay Dios mío! Take my heart back to Mexico City Hector and Max are amazing, we love everyone here!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
It would be easy to walk by this place and not know what's inside is so delicious. Greeted and sat right away.. Margaritas were delicious, different/unique types of menu items that I haven't seen at other Mexican restaurants... Everything tasted really fresh, service was great. Definitely worth the trip
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
I can't believe I didn't find out about this place until recently. We dined in during Covid. Its a cozy, warm atmosphere, well decorated. The service was warm and friendly. The menu is pretty unique in serving traditional Mexican dishes that feature moles and nopalitos. I think they make their own tortillas too. We got a lot of food! We got a chicken tinga tamale, the Nopalitos salad, a chiccharron dish, tacos, and enchiladas. I took one star off because the food is good, just not as vibrant as I would like. The mole is a little sweet and I felt there could have been more flavor overall. Otherwise, very fresh ingredients, beautifully plated that you can tell were made with a lot of love.

Yelp
A true gem! Delicious and flavorful Mexican food with great intimate vibes. The bartender was a delight and made well, and perfectly balanced drinks. The guava margarita is a must! We had a wonderful experience and can't wait to go again! Highly recommend the nachos and hibiscus quesadilla.

Yelp
Based on the reviews I came in expecting a lot. I had a really mixed experience so I am a bit conflicted writing this review. This is a nice place when you walk in and I really liked that they had the Tamale and Taco specials listed on the board. It was helpful to me because I was seated across from it. I saw others have to get up from their seats and walk in prefer to find out that meats were available which is inconvenient. Rarely do I experience poor service, but tonight it seemed as if the server was distracted and was not very attentive to us. We were one of two parties in the place and there were two servers so in theory we shouldn't have had the wait we did. I ordered a beer, the first on the menu and she came back after 5 minutes to tell me they didn't have any (the cooler was 15 feet away from our table). We started with the Queso Fundido, which wasn't on the menu but since I saw it on Yelp we asked for it. I added peppers and chorizo and I thought it was very good. I ordered a couple of Tamales, one chicken and one pork. Both were good, particularly the pork one. I also got 3 Tacos; Shrimp, not bad, the Al Pastor, very good, and the Carne Asada. The Carne Asada was a thin sliced beef, think a bit thicker than shaved steak, and had an "off" taste to it. Bummed that it didn't meet the expectations that were set by other Yelpers.

Yelp
Love the food, the staff, the location. Best margaritas I've ever had. Start with the nachos and end with the flan and a shot of Casa Nacho Anejo.

Yelp
I'm back! And I still say this is by far the best Mexican in RI plus the people will make you feel part of the family. Love. Love.

Everything is a solid 10 , great staff, food is spot on , always comfortable! Just feels like home

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem!!!! If you're looking for great Mexican food, look no further! Everything was amazing. Drinks were great and food was tasty. Ambience is lovely. Service is prompt. Will definitely be back soon!!
google avatar

Yelp
Food: 3/5 Service: 2/5 Aesthetics: 3/5 After reading the reviews on here, I went in expecting great homemade salsas, and authentic food, but I was disappointed with the authenticity of the food. It did not taste like home, and was not particularly good. The prices were not all that great either - its more expensive than most Mexican places, and the taste does not come anywhere near close. If you're looking only for better taste, I'd recommend other places like La Hacienda or Viva Mexico more. In terms of the service, the waiters were hard to flag down, the food took forever to be brought out, and some people in our party received cold food. I don't think I will be coming back here.
google avatar

Francesca S.

Yelp
Had a wonderful evening with friends and my husband. We got A LOT of tacos but everything was delicious including our drinks. I could have stayed there all night. Our server was amazing, attentive and answered all of our questions. He didn't show any irritation when we asked him to split the bill for us (don't worry he got a GREAT TIP). I love the interior vibe so much which really elevated the dining experience. I highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
I hesitate to write this review because I do not want anyone else to know about this terrific restaurant. Ever since Rancho Grande closed (so their owners could concentrate on other restaurants) I have been seeking a new go-to, authentic Mexican restaurant in Providence. After a terrific evening there last Saturday, I have found my new go-to. My friend and I did not have reservations, and the place was full but the owner, Max, sat us at a nice table at the back. The marg selection sounded terrific but I had to go with a Pacifico while my friend had a classic marg which she really liked. The menu looks terrific and I look forward to trying more but I had to get the mole enchiladas (I'll never be making mole at home), and it was all of the rich, smokey, spicey, chocolate-y goodness I expect. I appreciate the veg fillings of the enchiladas too: mushrooms! My friend got shrimp tacos with a fresh jalapeño/avocado salsa that was fresh and full of flavor and heat.  Oh and the pre-meal red salsa was terrific, full of fresh cilantro. Max was a great host and worked the room the whole time, and they have outdoor seating with heaters too.  I'll be back, hoping there isn't a line next time!

Yelp
I have been coming to Chilangos for the past 20 years. I've seen the decor and some menu items change, and thru it all, the food has always been FABULOUS!! The tacos are so full of delicious meat and the Margaritas are cold and refreshing. The service is prompt. Check it out! You'll be happy you did.
google avatar

Evan M.

Yelp
The food is delicious. My favorite items would be the Suadero tacos or Burrito Villa. Great service as well. The owner, Max, is a great guy and you can tell he takes pride in the quality of the experience.
google avatar

Josh R.

Yelp
LEGIT mexican food. Probably the only restaurant in the whole east coast that knows what they are doing.
google avatar

Brian F.

Yelp
Love this place. Tacos are always spot on. This is a great family run restaurant. If you go order the Foxeto Burrito. This is not on the Menu yet. It is the brisket taco with fig jam and brie cheese in a burrito. I order mine with the hot sauce from the shrimp dish. (Very spicy). Also say a prayer for Chilangos official Ambassador Felix. Have a shot of Don Nacho tequila with a double tap on the bar. And order the meal that goes to help fund his hospital stay. My favorite Margarita is the Tamarind. A pitcher of course. Sometimes Two.
google avatar

Adrienne W.

Yelp
Warm and inviting little restaurant. Tasty Margaritas and the pork tamales are super good!! Pro tip: Very small place be prepared to wait or get here early, friends!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. The food is amazing and service is unbelievably good. You must have the margarita pitcher and ask for D

Yelp
I'll be honest I was a little intimidated to come here because the neighborhood it's in it's not the greatest but I have seen it pop up a lot on yelp and it's actually rated one of the best Mexican restaurant so I decided to give it a try. The old don't judge a book by its cover. I'm glad I did. The inside of the restaurant is beautifully decorated and very clean. We were greeted by a very nice girl who ended up being our waitress. She was very knowledgeable about the menu, we rattled off a bunch of orders to her I swore she was never going to be remember them all but everything came out without a hitch. We got chips and salsa to share they were excellent freshly made, some guacamole that was perfect. I got a mango margarita it was delicious. And then I got the beef brisket taco, the Al Pastore taco and a pork tamale. Everything was absolutely seasoned authentic and delicious. Highly recommend this place it is a must try. We will so be back.
google avatar

Alice C.

Yelp
I took some friends who were visiting here because a friend recommended it to us. I made a reservation and we were seated immediately (because there were many open seats), but did not get water until half an hour later. Then, each order of appetizer, meal, etc took about half an hour. We were disappointed by the very slow service and not so stellar food. The plates were pretty bland, some of them masked with hot sauce. The waiter also had a lot of confusion with our cards and charged one credit card twice instead of splitting the cost. I was sad that I took visitors here and they were disappointed too.
google avatar

Vanessa O.

Yelp
This place makes my heart warm, always. Whenever I'm craving authentic Mexican food, this is is my go to. All made fresh to order, I'm never disappointed. Always paired with a margarita (pretty strong!). Great for solo lunch/dinner but better as a group. Has a lovely outdoor patio as well!
google avatar

Edith S.

Yelp
Such delicious, authentic Mexican food. Full of flavor. Just delicious. Can't get enough. The salsa is amazing! Once you eat it, you realize in an instant that you never had salsa before, merely tomato paste. Absolutely nothing compares. I don't think I can eat store-bought salsa again. If you don't like spicy food, don't come here. Just about everything you eat here will clear your sinuses right out. The servers are really friendly and thoughtful. The desserts (flan or churros) are amazing. It's a delightful place to take friends - especially if they are foodies. Four stars because the service is a bit slow, and if you are seated outdoors, be prepared to hear the constant revving of car engines for absolutely no reason by all the jerky drivers passing by on Merton Ave that will drown out any conversation you may be having at the time. When you are first seated, skip the water and go straight to margaritas and/or beer because the water provided in the pitcher tastes horrid.
google avatar

George A.

Yelp
Margarita was the only plus. Waitress sucked. Food wasn't seasoned well. Overall not a good experience.

Richard R.

Yelp
As my cousin would say, wow, just wow. Possibly the worst restaurant experience of my life. We got there at 6:05 last evening. Should have been plenty of time to leave by 7:35 to catch a concert. They sat us directly below music blasting from the cheapest, lousiest sounding speakers I've ever heard. Conversation was nearly impossible, so we switched tables and ordered drinks. After 15 minutes they asked if we wanted an appetizer and we ordered one - still no drinks. My friend had a hard day and really needed her drink so that she could sip it and relax. Nope. 15 minutes later, 1/2 hour after we ordered, the drinks arrived with the appetizer. We were sitting in clear view of the bar and it wasn't as if the tender was going nuts - he was chatting, walking around, etc. Getting close to 7, our waiter finally showed up and we explained that we were running out of time. He assured us that they would try to get our orders out asap. Bottom line, we had to take our dinners to go. Tamales with mole had no mole in the box. I'll throw them out. I didn't see my friend's order. The only non-awful thing in the evening was the margarita, which was good. I spoke with a friend this morning who knows the restaurant well. He said he's not surprised at all. He said they treat you like dog poop (we were at the dog park, hence the analogy) until they "get to know you". One thing for sure - they won't get to know me.
google avatar

Arthur S.

Yelp
One of the best family run Mexican restaurants! Carlos is the best Mexican mixologist that I know! He infuses tequila, makes his own bitters, mixes his own menu, and comes up with concoctions on the fly to suit anyone's palate. The salty dog is a sure favorite, along with his villa burrito and chorizo casa. His nephews and uncle go out of their way to make you feel at home and they aren't afraid to share their knowledge and expertise! Going to Chilangos is like going to visit a favorite relative. Homemade salsa and chips are courtesy of the house as well as other pleasant surprises every now and then. Can't wait to go back!

Julia C G.

Yelp
To say this is the best Mexican restaurant in Providence really undersells the place. From the drinks to the food to the service and ambiance, Chilangos offers a truly stellar experience with every meal, a true must-visit in Rhode Island. Everything on the menu is excellent, though my partner and I will usually settle on a mixed plate of tacos with a pitcher of their delightful margaritas, slowly noshing on their house-made chips and delicious salsas on the side. Highly, highly recommended.

Ryan D.

Yelp
Where do I start. THE BEST MARGARITAS! Amazing family owned restaurant who make you feel like family. My wife has to have the brisket tacos and the queso fundito every time. The Buritto Villa is hands down the best buritto I have ever had anywhere! And the Pambazo are my favorite.
google avatar

Neomi S.

Yelp
This has to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in RI. I'm shocked I haven't reviewed the place but its time to share my experience! This restaurant has a unique spin on yummy Mexican dishes and a great selection of adult beverages. The neighborhood may not be appealing but do not let it scare you away from enjoying delicious tostadas, tasteful margaritas, and great table service!
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
Always hit up this place before going to Freeplay bar and arcade for pre drinks and food. If you're looking for authentic and rich flavors this is a great spot. Their different array of meats and options for vegetarians is amazing. As well as the levels of spice! I really love spicy food. The "Camarones a la diabla" were spicy but not overwhelming, cooked in a mango papaya habanero salsa, and comes with rice and a side of bread. Perfect with an ice cold beer.

Yelp
I had the chance to go out to lunch with my very citified niece. She lives in Providence and is very familiar with many of the restaurants there as she is a restaurant manager. We went out on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and weren't sure what we felt like having. but she suggested. We looked st many Yelp reviews and she saw this Mexican restaurant listed. I am so glad that she did. It is lovely inside and I would never have found it on my own being right outside of Olneyville. It also has an outside patio and a separate room with a bar. Who knew that all of this would be found on this main street. And it doesn't even feel like a main street when you are sitting inside. It's very cozy and comfortable and I really love the ambience. We decided to start with appetizers so we got the tostada and nachos and a tamale. The tostado was loaded with goodies and the tamale was rolled in the corn husk and cooked to perfection. I added some of their salsa to mine which made it even better. We ordered the nachos without meat and really they were a meal in themselves. Different kinds of beans with a couple of cheeses and salsa and pickled jalapenos just made it perfect. We enjoyed our appetizers so much that we couldn't even order the meal. Everything was excellent and I look forward to going back there very soon.

Yelp
You really can't judge this resturant from location or store front. The food, drinks and service were incredible. My recommendation is to get whatever the taco special is. Every time I've been there, the tacos have been different and every time they have been really amazing. The food is fresh & flavorful. Also, instead of getting individual margaritas, get the pitcher. It's $40 for about 12 drinks. Truly an amazing hidden gem. I live in NYC and every time in in the area I make an effort to come here because nothing can compare.

Yelp
Food was very good. Close to a 5/5 Service killed it for me though, which is the reason for the 3/5. Walked in, took about 10 minutes before anyone even asked for a name to reserve a table. Long wait for a table (not really their fault, it was a Friday, so typically busy), when we finally sat, we waited long for our orders to be taken, waited long for food, waited long to get our boxes for left overs, and waited long for our check. Although it was busy, there were 4 employees waitressing, don't know how they couldn't keep up with orders ect, as the restaurant isn't that big in size. I would probably go back if I was in the neighborhood and it was a weekday and knew they were slow.

Yelp
I have a sweet spot for authentic Mexican food. It's not the easiest to come by. There are many posers. After living in Los Angeles, I have truly been missing the presence of excellent Mexican in my East coast hangouts. Well, look no further. Chilangos fits the bill nicely. First of all, it's pretty much in the ghetto. That's a compliment. Don't expect to find really great Mexican food in the nice part of town. It's worth a visit outside of your comfort zone to taste the wonderful food at Chilangos. During our recent visit here, we were greeted by the most adorable old man who didn't speak a word of English. He did his best to communicate with us in Spanish, and whatever he was saying and doing must have worked because by the end of our meal we were fighting over which one of us was going to adopt him! (We eventually settled on joint custody). Our server Marie was also fabulous. She was really helpful and friendly, even though we stayed in the restaurant finishing our meal past closing time. The restaurant itself is fairly small and cozy. It has the perfect vibe for a Mexican fiesta. The margaritas are served in VERY generous portions and they are freshly made in a variety of flavors. I loved the cactusberry margarita, and my dining companions swooned over the original and mango versions. Several of us decided to order Enchiladas. I love how flexible the menu is here. You can easily switch out meats and vegetables and really get your food the way you want it, without drama. The enchiladas stated that they were dipped in their respective sauces and then topped with shredded chicken, onions, queso fesco, sour cream, etc. I assumed they were actually filled with these ingredients, but alas, they were literally topped with them! It was almost like a deconstructed form of what I consider enchiladas to be. But you know what? They were FABULOUS! Who cares if they're filled or topped when the food is this fantastic. Additionally the refried beans are BLACK instead of pinto (delicious) and the rice is great as well. Generous portions at wonderful prices. I'm smitten. Not only do I want to adopt the old Mexican man who works here, but I want to return again and again to satisfy every craving for Mexican food that ails my ex-Los Angelelino body.

Yelp
I'm not a restaurant owner, but if I was, I'd probably try and recruit the guy that was working there last night. He was the waiter/host (possibly more, as he was very knowledgeable of the history of the place). He delivered top notch service. Of course I didn't get his name, but he made every single customer feel like a friend. Very genuine, talkative, engaged, and he provided great recommendations. A+ On to the food, everything was very good, which made me wish I went with a bigger appetite, because I then wanted to try everything. A highlight for me was the Gordito - a small, simple, cheese-filled roll. So delicious, satisfying, and only $5. I'm not down with pork, an ingredient featured in most of the dishes at Chilangos, but I still managed. I got the flounder tacos special - super fresh, served with a great sauce on the side, and only $9. On to the cocktails, I loved - LOVED - their margarita. I'm a big margarita fan, and they nail it. Served in a big glass, salted rim, and not junky/heavy, but almost "summery/fresh" (if that makes sense), and a bargain for $8. My hubz had the Coyote Trail cocktail and said it's one of "the best he's had in a long time." I had a sip, and it was amazing. I keep mentioning prices, because I think Chilangos is affordable and fairly priced, though I'm a Brooklyn transplant, so maybe it's not. Who knows. But I was pleasantly surprised by all of the food prices on the menu (as well as the complimentary chips & salsa). Finally, my only gripe about my experience - and it's a big one, yet has nothing to do with the actual business - is the parking situation. There really isn't anywhere to park. The cocktails are so good though, that maybe you should Uber it anyway.
