The Best Cheap Meals In Mexico City

"Chilpa started as a tiny restaurant and quickly expanded into a much larger operation that’s open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. A small $7 order of chilaquiles is enough for a full meal, and our go-to is half salsa medio picante, half muy picante, with a fried egg on top for an extra $2. (You can also add suadero for a few more bucks). Every order of chilaquiles comes with a fresh sourdough roll—make sure to save it for the end to polish your plate clean. There’s plenty of seating on the sidewalk, but if you want a more scenic backdrop, Parque Mexico is only a block away." - guillaume guevara

Google
Delicious chilaquiles filled with flavor and celebration. I’m so happy to have found this gem. Not only was food filed with goodness but the service was great too! Lorena was helpful with helping me find the perfect dish.

Overall rating: 4.5 Visiting from: NYC
Price pp $27 USD w/ tip As someone who has never been to CDMX, I was very excited to try chilaquiles which this place is popular for. We arrived around 11:30am & got seated around 12:15. A very popular place! The staff was friendly but there were so many options for the chilaquiles! You def have to go in knowing what you want. I think mine was good but I should have gotten the spicier option. I was not, not surprised by the price. They get you with the add-ons. Wish it was cheaper. And there’s should be a most popular option, in addition to customization. Eggs, Suadero, Fried, Avocado, Panela Cheese, No spicy I can’t remember what my friend got, but we were not expecting hers to be so big.

Google
We ordered some fresh juice (the zen and the berry flavor) recommend the berry juice over the avocado based zen. We ate chilaquiles and the scrambled eggs with steak. Food was great and creative.

Google
A La Condesa hot spot for build-your-own chilaquiles. Choose your own protein, chips, sauce and add-ons. It’s on the pricier side given for a meal in CDMX, but worth it for if you’re visiting and want to try a famous local dish. The chilaquiles were delicious and rounded out a perfect day!

Google
Chilpa in Mexico City offers a mixed bag, but definitely has some bright spots! On my recent visit, I tried the chicken and avocado taco, and while the ingredients seemed fresh, it unfortunately lacked a significant punch of flavor. It was a bit underwhelming. However, the real standout was the vegan chorizo. Seriously impressive! It was packed with flavor and had a fantastic texture – even as a non-vegan, I absolutely loved it. It's definitely something I'd order again. The service was friendly, although the food did take a little longer to arrive than expected. It's understandable though, as the place was quite busy, indicating its popularity.

Google
They do have a delicious chilaquiles on the menu, indeed! Was very pleased with my dish and juice. The one thing that I disliked was the live music playing loudly (I would much rather enjoy a peaceful breakfast). Wish they also came up with a better waitlist system too.

Google
Come early, as it fills up pretty fast on Sundays. Food is great and service is exceptional. You can custom order your own chilaquiles!

Google
Hands down the best breakfast in Mexico City. It's so good we're coming back and staying right down the street when we celebrate my 60th birthday in September. Chilpa EVERY day! Their food and juices are amazing and the service is wonderful. Can't love this place enough

Yelp
Im obsessed with the guy who comes and sings around lunch time at chilpa. He kind of sounds like UB 40. I love him so much, I come to CDMX and chilpa just to see him!

Yelp
Meh. Decent, I enjoy the concept of build-your-own chilaquiles. Place is definitely designed for the gringos and was unsurprisingly busy on a Saturday morning. Waited maybe 15-20 minutes for a table. Chilaquiles are around $150-200 depending on what you get. I had the pollo and added an egg and it was about $200. I ordered the larger portion and it was satiable but not overwhelming. Service was fine but nothing to write home about. Anyway, there are better and cheaper chilaquiles around. Wouldn't come back.

Babynorah T.

Yelp
I've never had chilaquiles and with these reviews, I was excited but unfortunately I left disappointed. I couldn't finish my bowl. Tasted like soggy chips. Their cecina tacos were terrible. So salty. Bad start to our first meal and day in mdx
google avatar

Yelp
It's one of my favorite places to get Chilaquiles! You can build your own and choose your favorite ingredients; it's pretty tasty and well-priced! Their smoothies are also good; I will return! Service is quick and friendly, and eating outside is fun!

Yelp
We had breakfast at Chilpa the day we arrived in Mexico City. The service was prompt and the sidewalk seating was really cute. I loved all the different variations of chilaquiles you could build. I ended up ordering the baked tortilla chips (which were perfectly crispy), with fried eggs, portobello mushroom and avocado. It was delicious and super filling (even though I ordered the small). I was literally full even when lunch rolled around. My husband ordered the Huevos Aporreados (scrambled eggs with cecina steak). He didjt love his dish so I'd stick with chilaquiles if you decide to visit. We also tried the orange, carrot, ginger juice, which was really refreshing.

Yelp
Love chilaquiles?! Well it's a must to try them here. It's a cute cozy restaurant with honestly more seating outside than inside, yet it's tan very well. These have to be the BEST in the city. If someone can top these, I'm open to hear it. Yet from the service to the food you can't go wrong. Get you a yummy red juice on the side and it'll be chefs kiss. The servers are bilingual for those who aren't that great with English as well. No rsvp so definitely get there early! Thankfully they move very efficient.

Yelp
This is a review from a vegetarian person's perspective. This place is great for brunch. It's quite popular so there may be a bit of a wait. We did the Build Your Own chilaquiles and it was fabulous. I'm a vegetarian and found it to be great. There are a ton of toppings that you can add in addition to the protein. We did the house sauce. We also added avocados. For eggs they asked for fried or scrambled- fried still ends up being a bit runny so make sure to specify. Some folks in my party asked for a smaller bowl and I don't think the server put that in properly because their bowls were the same as the large size. The French toast is also quite good; as is their coffee.

Yelp
We were visiting Mexico City and staying in Condessa. Came across Chilpa and the place was very busy with a lot of people waiting. We put our name down and were able to get a table in 30 minutes. I had chilaquiles for the first time in MX and were blown away with how delicious they were. We also got the French toast which was perfectly sweet and tasty. Everyone around was having Chilaquiles too so I guess it is safe to assume that this place is a popular one to grab a bowl for many. We sat outside on a beautiful sunny morning and the vibe was quite lovely with a great meal.

Yelp
We skipped breakfast at a well-known upscale restaurant in favor of Chilpa and were so glad we did. Here, you design your own chilaquiles, the portions are huge and everything was delicious. They also have a nice kids menu, and everyone here was super nice and friendly to our 6-year-old. We will definitely return!
google avatar

Kerry M.

Yelp
Food is delicious here! I ordered the molletes (added avocado and egg) and the chilaquiles. For the chilaquiles, recommend the gratina cheese, add eggs and avocado, and choose fried totopos.
google avatar

Alexa K.

Yelp
Amazing spot for a beautiful gloomy breakfast. Such a cozy spot with really friendly staff and delicious food. I love that you can customize your chilaquiles exactly the way you like them. I would love if the salsa was slightly spicier, but still really yummy and filling.
google avatar

Yonina G.

Yelp
We waited 30-40 minutes. Food and service were very disappointing. I ordered tacos and my husband ordered chilaquiles. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. Not worth the wait.
google avatar

Dakota T.

Yelp
This place is sooo good, a must visit when you're in CDMX! This place is great because you get to build/customize your own chilequilles - you start with your base of baked or fried tortilla chips, move on to the sauce/salsa (they have green and red options) and then you get to pick your toppings. They also have 3 sizes, which is nice that you get to choose from. The eggs are cooked perfectly! This place does have quite a wait, they seem to always be busy - we opted for take out and ate in the park!
google avatar

Yelp
Huevos Rancheros were very good and so was the coffee. Service was average. Cost was average.
google avatar

Ronak P.

Yelp
Great chilaquiles with the ability to customize to your heart's desire. Tried other dishes on the menu but chilaquiles are where it's at. If you can handle spice, I recommend the habanero sauce. Great little neighborhood spot kinda vibe with a lot of outdoor seating. Come hungry. Staff is very helpful and attentive. Does not matter if you do or don't speak Spanish.

Yelp
Lunch on Sunday was busy with a long wait, so we opted to do takeout and eat in Parque Mexico. It was a long wait for our food to be ready (understandable as there were so many people) but it was well worth the wait! The signature chills tacos were some of the best shrimp tacos I've had, and the huevos aporreados was really flavourful. Will definitely need to come back for chilaquiles since that seems to be their speciality!
google avatar

Yelp
We enjoyed a delicious breakfast outside. Chai Latte was delicious -- a hug in a mug! Our server was very helpful in recommending ways to order our BYO chilaquiles -- was easily the top 1 or 2 I've ever had.
google avatar

Robert J.

Yelp
Like chilaquiles? This place has the best you'll ever have. Custom order to your likes, service is great (Ricardo). Expect a wait on weekends and peak times.

Yelp
Service was terrible. The server was not friendly and did not make us feel welcome. She got annoyed when I asked questions. Total bummer because the food was decent.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Amazing spot for chilaquiles! Pick from the menu and create your own. The small is a generous portion size filling for one person. Order the medium or large to split between two. Don't forget to add the egg and avocado.

Limairy R.

Yelp
llegamos a 20 minutos antes de cerrar y aun así nos dieron su mejor servicio! ordenamos para llevar y los chilaquiles estaban estupendos. i recommend the 5 chile sauce with pollo y queso gratinado. those were our favorite!

Hank W.

Yelp
Top chilaquiles in CDMX!!! Don't miss this spot in Condesa. It doesn't get any better than this!

Marco L.

Yelp
Food, service and ambiance is all great!! A definite spot when I go to Mexico City! Chilaquiles are amazing!

Jonathan M.

Yelp
The food was delicious. The wait was a bit long but worth it. The Chile that was made in oil was so good we brought some home.
google avatar

Vikram S.

Yelp
Fresh and delicious chilaquiles with mix and match toppings. All at a reasonable price of between $5 and $7. Conveniently located on a leafy side street off the south side of Avenida Amsterdam.
google avatar

Kate S.

Yelp
The chilaquiles. Yes. Everything about this place. Go there hungry. I liked the option of making your own creation and the staff was very friendly despite our child-like Spanish.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
Best chilaquiles in CDMX!! Everything is fresh and made to order. It's a small restaurant so be sure to come when it's not busy . They serve bfast lunch and dinner. A must when you are here specially because it's in Condesa!!!!

Yelp
Sunday brunch with chilaquiles generally proves to be life-saving. If you choose to do it at Chilpa, you may pass on the operating table. The service at this place so was painful that it really didn't matter how the food tasted (decent.. pretty cold). Everyone was nice, but the inefficiency pretty much ruined the meal. Yes- the place was packed and people were waiting for food, I get that. We had to ask for milk for coffee 4 times. My "iced coffee" (which was a milkshake apparently) arrived when I was finishing my food. Everything arrived luke warm. Annnndddd this place doesn't have cilantro?! *blank stare* Actually: I am taking off a star for that (from 3 to 2). Cilantro is SO clutch in chilaquiles, not worth eating without it IMO. This was the final deal breaker. They do have nice sidewalk seating though. TL;DR: cute place, decent food, really poor service; NO CILANTRO, 2.5 stars
google avatar

Juv L.

Yelp
Needed chilaquiles after a long night. These did NOT disappoint. I make chilaquiles often and very good at it and these are very tasty. Big servings but a bit pricey when they sell them on every corner. Coffee was good too. I recommend this place. I think they deliver to close by homes. Small place, not for kids or large groups. Dropped them a star. They need to stop cooking their eggs for 2 weeks before serving them. They become a rubbery hard mess. Over easy and scrambled eggs.
google avatar

Sri K.

Yelp
Good food but awful service. I had to wait for 60 min for 2 freaking . Do yourself a favor & go elsewhere & save 1 hr of your time.
google avatar

Adrian N.

Yelp
The tacos are amazing and taste super fresh. The service is great too. It's a very small place with about 5 tables. They seem to specialize in only fish tacos and chilaquiles, but have other items on the menu.
google avatar

Jack D.

Yelp
Good food, informal, wonderful service. The chiliquiles, choose your own sauce, meat and makings are great. Their tables were full so they set us up at the cupcake shop next door and gave us perfect service. And afterwards we had cupcakes and coffee, also very good.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
We were a group of 4 who don't speak Spanish very well (but are learning!) and were treated SO graciously and patiently by our waiter here. The chilaquiles are delicious and the juices are insanely mindblowing. Stop looking for breakfast (or a hungover brunch in our case) - you've found it!
google avatar

Francesco B.

Yelp
Best fish tacos! Chilaquiles are also very good. Nice to enjoy the sun on the waking side !
google avatar

Jesse M.

Yelp
A fantastic, intimate, non-pretentious spot. Amazing chilaquiles. Great coffee. Delicious fruit smoothies. Super fair prices, unlike some other spots in the area. The outdoor seating is great and the service was perfect.
google avatar

Christian A.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. I had the salsa verde chilaquiles with a green juice. It was all flavorful, fresh, and cheap! Service is great too. Will definitely be returning here on my next visit to Mexico City.
