The Best Real-Deal Fried Chicken in Portland

"A Korean portmanteau and street food phenomenon called chimaek (chicken and beer) is the raison d’etre for this chain from Daegu, South Korea’s third-largest city. It continues to fill the demand for chicken chunks tossed in spicy and sticky-sweet gochujang and speckled with sesame seeds, having recently opened its third location at the Park The Carts pod on MLK. The compact menu features fried chicken in the form of traditional wings and their boneless counterparts, along with a whole bird option where the wings, thighs, drums, and so on, are chopped up into more finger-food-friendly forms." - Ron Scott, Thom Hilton

Google
The cashier (Bridgette) was very friendly and helpful. I have an allergy to pepper and she was able to help me find menu items that were not marinated overnight in what is likely a delicious marinade that I am unable to try. The popcorn Chicken was very flavorful, the spring rolls were delicious, and I really enjoyed the Orchard Pacific Berry beer they had on tap. The popcorn Chicken came with some pickled radish that was really good as well. They have a wide selection of Ramen that I plan to bring my son to try out. He will have to tell me how good the over night marinated chicken is as well. Everything I tried was very good and the meal was affordable. I will definitely return and will bring my family next time.

Google
The food was amazing! Super crispy, juicy chicken with a soy garlic sauce that avoids being too sweet! For a side I got the king rice, which had seaweed and sesame oil, and highly recommend getting that if you want rice with your meal over fries. Service was helpful and pleasant and I loved sitting and watching Sailor moon while I ate! I was super hungry and forgot to take a picture of my meal, but here’s a pic of my takeout container because the portions were super generous and I had to take some home!

Google
This is my new favorite Korean fried chicken spot. Chicken is perfectly crispy, and the level of spice in their standard hot gochujang sauce is just right. I stopped in for lunch today and can’t wait to bring my family in for dinner.

Google
The best thing here is the staff. SO sweet and kind. The atmosphere was amazing too. They were playing my favorite anime :) And the food was great !! I got the popcorn rice king.. it’s ADDICTING. Lovely flavors and umami. (Wait time is very short too. Awesome :)!)

Google
My go to spot for chicken wings they're 2nd to none! My favorite order is Soy Garlic Chicken wings, Pot stickers and potato wedges! Give them a try and This will also be your go to spot! I tried the rest it's your turn to try to the Best!

Google
I had avoided this place because of sticker shock from the platters. But I’ve been trying chicken wings all over and had never been here. The skin on their wings is so thick and crispy! I got the soy garlic wings, and it was like eating candy. Six wings, a mound of sticky rice, a small plastic container of radish and a 12-ounce IPA ran me $16. I go to Hollywood Theatre a lot and will definitely be stopping here again! They have an interesting packaged ramen section I want to try as well.

Google
Chicken was flavorful and not overly breaded which I love. King rice good twist on the side. Interior fine for a quick lunch but nothing to seek out. I am very weak when it comes to spicy food but the soy garlic chicken was delicious, king rice was spicy for me. For those spice lovers out there, yes you can make fun of me for how pathetic I am.

Google
I didn't get her name, but this one girl I talked to was so sweet!! We talked about the weather in Portland vs California, and a bit about my visit to Japan and she said she'd give me a discount. Which she absolutely did NOT have to do. I just wasn't ready for that discount to be like.. the entire price. I only paid a dollar!?? But I still tipped anyways because this girl is amazing and would love to chat with her again the next time I come by.

Yelp
Food is bomb, love the ambiance. They play really cute anime's. Chicken is juicy and the sauce was excellent! Love the chefs there and love the cashiers!! The sandwich is my favorite!!

Yelp
So much to say being my first experience eating here. All good things to be honest. Street parking around the area was easily available when I went, so that was really. Going in, they got some mini crane games that you can pay-to-play which was cute. A bit messy in the front, but not an issue. The counter was all the way in the middle of the place and you had to go up and order first before dining in. It wasn't really busy it seemed like. Some to-go orders, but no one really dining in except maybe one other table. Saw they had 4 kinds of chicken wings based on the spice level you preferred. Ended up getting 6 pieces of the Garlic Soy and 6 of the Extra Hot King. The chicken comes with a side of radish. There's a good amount of appetizers to choose from to go with your chicken. So go the egg rolls and some white rice to go with our food. Not only that, they got an instant ramen station as well! I haven't used it before, but I like that it's an option since I don't usually see anything like that very often. The place was pretty spacious and they had some TV playing some shows. I got to sit at a table that had a nice view of one of the TVs that was playing Naruto on it. So it was an enjoying experience. Food came out at a timely manner and gloves and disposable utensils were available to keep our hands from being sticky. Looked like we had to bus our own table after the meal, but it was pretty easy to do and I had no issue with that. So how was the food? It was alright. The extra hot was pretty spicy, but it wasn't anything extremely mind blowing or impressive. Just solid food and solid experience dining in. I'd go back.

Yelp
We ordered to go and it took awhile. Very dry popcorn chicken on both the soy garlic and spicy versions. Almost inedible although the dogs enjoyed a few. The salad was full of brown iceberg lettuce and the dressing was unpleasant. King Rice was not bad, but not going back.
google avatar

Yelp
I shared the soy & hot (20pcs) with my friend. We initially thought we could finish it all but we ended up splitting the leftovers. I enjoy eating the wings with radish which also helps with digestion. Since we ordered delivery I can't speak on ambiance, but the food itself was great.

Heather D.

Yelp
Everything was fantastic! These are the best chicken wings. We got soy garlic, hot and extra hot wings. They are the perfect combination of crispy and sticky saucy cooked to perfection. Overall my favorite was the soy garlic hands down but my boys really like the hot and extra hot. The other signature deliciousness is the King Rice! It pairs great with the wings along with a Soju Highball or a Terra lager. The service was fabulous and the staff were so friendly. We will definitely visit again.

Yelp
One of favorite spots for Korean fried chicken. Pieces are on the larger scale with price being fairly decent. Average wait time for the food is roughly 10-12 minutes. Staff is very attentive and restaurant is always spotless every time I visit. They also offer beers to enjoy with the chicken. Recommend getting the spicy flavor if interested in a spicy kick

Yelp
Chimcking has never disappoint me, their regular soy garlic will always be my comfort food and the staff there are so friendly. I used to always make the drive to the Beaverton location but I'm so glad they open one in Portland and I have not stop going here since. My to go order is a regular soy garlic and a side of soy garlic pop corn chicken. I will occasionally order their teokbokki as well, the sauce can be spicy but very tolerable! I always leave the restaurant happy and will continue to recommend chimcking to everyone I know! Note: They have anime/ Kpop playing on their tv! Parking sucks tho.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! What a waste of money! Had been looking forward to trying this place and am very disappointed. Boneless wings were the only thing we liked. Got takeout and 2 items were missing from our order! The cashier was friendly and it appeared to be clean but we won't be back.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
This location is in Hollywood district which makes it hard to find parking since it is only street parking in a busy area. The actual restaurant is nice, very clean. Service was fast since we were the only ones there. Ordered a 20 pc of the wings, half soy garlic & half spicy as well as a tteobokki. Food came out relatively fast, around 10 minutes or so. Wings were delicious, crispy, and saucy. My favorite was the soy garlic. The tteobokki was okay, there was something about the texture of the sauce that I didn't particularly enjoy. But all the cheese on top was yummy! This place is cool & definitely work checking out for your Korean fried chicken fix!

Yelp
first time here at this location, really hard to find parking, have to just keep circling for parallel street parking, or park further away and walk We came together on a saturday afternoon and it was during happy hour 2-5pm. Got a large and shared with with my spouse, $4.25 good tall size. Great draft beer, holiday edition with the cranberry cider Ordered half & half with soy garlic and hot wings 20 pieces $33.99

Yelp
Parking: some parking outside, next to a bunch of food truck places Food: we got the Soy Garlic. SOOO DELICIOUS!!! The crunch of the chicken perfect and I felt like there was a good ratio of drumstick/wings. Service: good service no complaints. Would return!!
google avatar

Travis T.

Yelp
Probably my favorite wings in Portland. I always get the half soy garlic and half hot. It's a little expensive at $2 a wing, but worth it.
google avatar

Mason B.

Yelp
Wings with a Korean flair! This is a great little wing shop for dine in or take out. We swung by here for a quick lunch the other day not quite knowing what to expect and we were not disappointed. We got a large order of the Soy Garlic wings to try our first time there and they were great. Crispy on the outside and juicy inside, they were delicious. The vibe is pretty chill and the decor is fairly basic, but it was clean and the clerk at the counter was pleasant and fast. Great place!
google avatar

Yejee J.

Yelp
Teokbokki lacked of flavor and the ingredients were overcooked. Chicken wings were very small. Seriously we've never had wings that tiny. A few pieces were only a thumb length. The table wasn't wiped. I really liked the new Chimcking that opened on MLK Jr blvd but this one was a huge disappointment. Will never come back here.
google avatar

Sydney B.

Yelp
Best Korean chicken place we've ever been to and we've been to so many! We were gonna go to one down the street, but they were closed so we stumbled into this one. Street parking and lots of seating! Seat yourself and serve your own water. Staff was friendly, and there was lots of music and tvs playing. The wings were so crunchy and flavorful! Comparable to bonchon, but flavor was even more amazing! The tteokkboki but cheesy and spicy and so good. Would come back if in the area!
google avatar

Ellen M.

Yelp
The wings are on-point and really well-glazed! They provided plastic gloves for eating, which was a nice touch.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Korean fried chicken, the outside skin is so crispy and crunchy for the wings. Inside was a little dry for me, but otherwise the flavor for the wings were great. I for a meal where they gave me 5 wings, fries and a drink. There was a lot more fries than wings for the combo. The fries were fried fresh but bland and you can tell it's frozen. It lacked seasoning too, I saw that they had salted it but there was no salt flavor. The store here is a decent size, there is street parking at this shop. Definitely will come and try their chicken wings again and probs get another side next time.
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
The newer location of the two and also the bigger one! This spot is definitely more ideal for dining in with plenty of seatings. We went in wanting the whole series but unfortunately it wasn't available so seems like calling in to check if that's what you want is the smart way to go. The person also mentioned that you can call to order the whole series in advance since it'd take 25+ minutes to make; some helpful pro tips. Our half & half extra hot king and soy garlic wings, however, came out super quickly! You gotta love their soy garlic sauce, I can easily just devour all of them myself. Wings and drums were on the small sizw but well-cooked and thoroughly sauced. The extra hot king was also very tasty albeit being quite spicy. I can handle my spice and this one stings! All options came with pickled radish as a side. Highly recommend some rice to go with whatever you order; they gave a decent amount too. One rice was good enough for the two of us.
google avatar

Yelp
The bomb! Wow! These wings are crisp, flavorful and juicy all at the same time. With every bite I was craving the next, eating so fast because I just could not get enough of that chicken wing perfection. Fried chicken and wings are a classic comfort food in many cuisines and cultures. It's amazing how something so simple can have so many varieties. If you have never had Korean fried chicken wings, you need to give ChimcKing a try, just be prepared to be addicted! Consider yourself forewarned. The half & half is a good way to go. Half an order of soy garlic which has an underlying sweetness in the sticky sauce and half spicy. I love heat but stayed with the regular spice and not the King spice. I want to taste all the ingredients and the chicken, not just heat. Next time I'm going to order a side of Ddukbokki which are small, flat rice cakes (noodles) cooked in a gochujang sauce. I love them! They are so unique and delicious but Ddukbokko need to be eaten hot and I was so focused and consumed with my wings that I couldn't divide my time! Located on NE Sandy next to the Hollywood Theatre, I'm in this part of town several times a week so that means Chimching wings will be on the rotation!

K. P.

Yelp
It was an ok product. I don't understand the reviews. We have a place in Battle Ground that is juicy & has better flavor options. Anyhow, I am glad some people love it!
google avatar

Constantine J.

Yelp
Had super high expectations for this place. It is good but nothing I'd write home about. With prices around $14 for 10 wings I was expecting big juicy wings packed with flavor. Instead, we get small, minimal meat on the wing. We tried the Garlic and the Hot King. Again, they were good, just nothing special, and not worth the price per wing in my opinion. Unfortunately, I think I went in with super high expectations and got a bit let down.
google avatar

Jojo N.

Yelp
The food was solid, an 8/10. It was spicier than I expected so I drink a lot of water haha. The water cup I got had lipstick smears on the lip of it which I didn't notice til half way through my meal which kind of disturbed me... the cup was not washed well enough. However, they did play one piece in the store which might just cancel out the unhygienic cup mentions earlier? Overall, this place is worth checking out, just look at your cup carefully before drinking from it...

Yokai M.

Yelp
My favorite chicken wings! I make it a point to get wings here at least monthly. The whole family loves the Soy Garlic flavor.
google avatar

Jam M.

Yelp
We didn't eat here but we did take it to go. The person was very friendly and the chicken was good. Parking on the other hand sucked! It's downtown and wish it wasn't. The chicken was fresh when we got back to our hotel. We would still recommend this to our friends because the food was good
google avatar

Tran L.

Yelp
We all come to see what people have to say about a restaurant and how their food and service is.... For this one, I'll be short and simple. Bomb food (eat there, eat right away, not too sure about taking home, assume it won't be as good as it might not be as crispy) Service- some of the nicest people. Chicken- perfect!

Nick J.

Yelp
Best soy garlic wings I've ever had in my life! I 100% recommend this place! A 10 piece wing and side is good for 1 adult person, but if you are really hungry then I recommend going with a 20 piece. I've been to all 3 Chimcking locations in the area and this one is by far is the best! The food and the staff are great!
google avatar

L L.

Yelp
Not bad! The fried chicken sandwich combo was affordable and filling. I got the spicy version and needed more kick but that doesn't take away from how yummy the sandwich was. I would return here if in the area again. The service was quick and efficient. Dinging one star for the ambiance because there's a table situated near the TV and when I got up (I'm about average height), I banged my head on the it. Overall, solid food but would choose another table to sit at lol.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
I love the wings. They're crunchy & very tasty. You order at the counter and get your food served at your table. It's good service, not too intrusive. It's a very calm & quiet ambiance, it's very low key.
google avatar

Jenny G.

Yelp
We ordered the Half & Half: Boneless Soy Garlic & Hot King. The skin was dry and not crispy, but the meat was tender. They used dark meat. The boneless pieces were thick, so the sauce to chicken ratio was off. Soy Garlic: Sweet and not very umami. Hot King: Tasted liked gochujang with a touch of garlic. Radishes: Sour, not acidic.
google avatar

Martin W.

Yelp
Free tea? Nice touch for a fast food restaurant. The selection of items is overwhelming - well more confusing- for a first time guest. Cause a lot of items are not or not yet available. But the human at the counter is very helpful and answers questions lol. So I'll ordered wings since that's what this place it for, plus a side of spring rolls. I ordered half and half fried no spice and goy garlic wings and normally I'll do not Like wings that are smothered in sauce. But I'll have to admit the soy garlic wings have been even tastier then the regular. And they are still crispy! Also I have never seen this before they give you finger gloves - so you don't get your finger dirty when eating wings. Nice! The egg rolls are good and the side of picked radishes just perfect! Plus free tea, did. I'll mentioned that? Great service as well and so I am sure I will be back. (Soon).
google avatar

Jenni A.

Yelp
Tasty wings and sides (we loved the soy garlic wings)! Order ahead, if you can, because it gets really busy! Also, parking is somewhat difficult in the area on the weekends. The ambiance was just alright - nothing exciting.
google avatar

Daniel N.

Yelp
Super quick service for a wing place. The wings were crispy and affordable. Very tasty! . This may be my new favorite wing spot in portland for sure. I went during lunch and there was a ton of seating. Can host big parties. Parking is a hassle around this area though. Definitely will be back for morw
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
Love the Korean Garlic/Soy boneless fried chicken and like the packaging they use for delivery. Also have a spicy version which I like.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
Fried chicken is a wonderful food. Period. One can find an amazing version of it across town with Reel em Inn being right at the top. Hey, my opinion but it is pretty damn good. But I've had other great varieties of fried chicken from other places including the fried chicken app at Bollywood Theater and the spicy dry fried chicken at either Kung Pow or Shandong. You can find whatever you want in fried chicken from quite a few countries. So when Chimcking had their soft opening sign up for awhile over in Hollywood, I kinda knew I'd end up there at some point. So, walking in I knew what I was leaning towards, they have large menus to look over right outside the storefront. Chimcking has these half & half chicken options of their Soy Garlic and spicy wings or boneless wings. For $13.99, you get a good amount of chicken and sooooooooo much flavor. I got fries to go with it, but it looks like I need to try the King rice on my next visit from some of the other reviews. Now being at the tail end of Covid, the place is only takeout or delivery (3rd party). The location has been several other restaurants and I do hope they eventually utilize the space well. B level wrestling and K-pop videos were on two different TV screens while I waited for my food, so there's that. As for the boneless wings? The Soy Garlic with some sesame seeds on them was sweet and tangy and quite amazing. The crispiness was on point. The spicy ones had a great kick, not in a buffalo wing way and they do offer an extra spicy version which I'd try. I also received a small order of pickled radishes that had a nice sour bite to the food that balanced things out. Very umami. I enjoyed the food and I'm pretty sure any of you reading this will as well. They offer whole chicken options as well and combos, plus a few other Korean items. Overall, I'll be back to try more. Enjoy and support local PDX.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
Hits and one miss. The popcorn chicken was excellent, more favorable than traditional Chinese style Orange/General Tso chicken. The small pieces give it a better crunch, they pop. The King Rice was worth the small price upgrade, unique flavor enlivens plain rice. The layer of ingredients is somewhat thin, so better to mix it first before taking a bite. It was the opposite of dry rice, but not greasy; I prefer it "wetter" like this. The one big fail is their sad iceberg lettuce heavy salad. Real boring, comes with a cherry tomato and a so-so Ranch-dressing dressing Service is stoic, execution of order without friendliness, so don't expect too much of an experience. Hope they make it because this location in the past 20 years has been a revolving door.
google avatar

Barbara D.

Yelp
I spent the last year eating way too many wings. This is my all time fav. Comes with daikon and

Yelp
Amazing wings. We ordered a small found the favor we liked before ordering a large. Garlic soy for the win! Hot king took 2nd place and save the effort get a large half and half order. Yum-mo!

Cthulu N.

Yelp
Food is ok but overpriced for what tastes like Korean fast food. Service was eye rollingly, "I wasn't listening-what did you say", don't know much about the food they're serving bad. Ambiance is standard. With good Korean food within walking distance, I won't be back.

Nicole B.

Yelp
Great food. Very crispy chicken amazing food The hot king was very spicy so just beware. I highly recommend soy garlic and the regular hot king

Yelp
Tried them for the first time today and went with the plain fried wing. It was amazing, crispy, hot, and well seasoned. Can't wait to try their other flavors!

Yelp
Chicken has the BEST flavor and love that it's not heavily breaded. We ordered soy garlic and spicy boneless wings. Limited drink selection. They were out of some of their posted drinks. The door says wings and beer, but they only had a few beers as well. Prices are high...we paid over $90 for 40 wings, two fountain drinks, and spring rolls. Ambiance is just ok with a weird empty area when you enter. Would come again if someone really wanted to, but likely wouldn't return on my own.

Brionna C.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. Laid back environment with fast service and delicious food. Can't really ask for more.
google avatar

C... D.

Yelp
Kiddo wanted these wings- pretty darn good, would have liked more of a selection of dipping sauces/ kiddo enjoyed the Mayo ( aioli) , the rice as a side ... we got the extra large order of hot king wings ( had another mouth to feed at home) with a coleslaw too. All was good - nice to see it was happy hour / good service and ambiance...
google avatar

Astrid M.

Yelp
I liked the place, k pop on the back and a laid back environment . Prices are a little higher then expected but the chicken was good . If you can spare $32 in fried chicken + beer then it's worth it . I tried the pear cider and it was bomb .
google avatar

Marissa B.

Yelp
Their chicken was really good. Price was very affordable. I got 10 wings with a side for $20. Parking wasn't too bad. Service was really good. I definitely recommend and would return again.
google avatar

Athena G.

Yelp
the most bestest amazingest wonderful absolutely mouth-watering chicken wings i've ever had! i've been coming here for a couple months now, and no other wings can compete. if someone asked me where the best place is to get wings in portland, this would definitely be top of the list. sweet, wonderful staff! the garlic soy wings are my favorite, my friends love the extra hot! both are great, but we recommend the wing series over than the boneless series. sides are also delicious. keep up the great work!! :)
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
Sweet and spicy Korean fried (boneless) chicken. All you need on the side is a beer to compliment it and you're good to go as they do in Korea. So happy this place exists and it's Korean owned! The spicy chicken has the perfect kick with flavor and you can't stop! The sweet chicken has a hint of honey and it goes well with the chicken, of course. Their version the fried chicken really bears American style, but the south of the US holds up to being the best as far as western style. Do come, support your local restaurants, eat Chimcking!
google avatar

Santiago V.

Yelp
Wow. This place is amazing. We ordered some wings and rice and the flavors exploded! I wasn't expecting much from this place but I'm so happy I came. Also, I tried the rice lager beer and it was delicious! And I'm not even that much of a beer guy! I will definitely come again and again!
