Best Eastern European Food From San Diego Restaurants and Delis | Eater San Diego

"Chimney cakes have popped up in the U.S. in recent years. In Romania, these tube-shaped street food pastries traditionally made by the Hungarian community are sprinkled with sugar or nuts. In this American offshoot, the cakes can be covered with cheddar and jalapenos or stuffed with arugula, black forest ham, and swiss cheese — or, for a flavor explosion, both. Sweet variations include cinnamon, coconut, and sprinkles."

Recently I visited chimney nation located in Fashion Valley mall. These chimney cones are available in sweet and savoury flavours. We started with lemonade. Next up we tried their ice cream chimney. Loved their chimney sandwich a freshly baked chimney cone which is perfect for evening munchies.

This was our second time here. After the first experience, we thought give it another shot. First time, the lady didn't get the order right, and had to wait about 30 minutes to get what we ordered. The second time, she burned both of the chimney cakes because she made the dough too thin, so it burned till black. She gave us the burned cakes, and when I asked what is that, she said it's normal. At least she should've given another one that's not burned. It happend on Friday 01/13/2023.

In the middle of fashion Valley Mall, right next to urban outfitters, there’s a stand that serves the most delicious sweet and savory treats. I tried a vegetarian savory cone, as well as a sweet ice cream filled cone, and the Hungarian crust that they make right in front of you, is so tasty.

Google
I'm Hungarian and was disappointed, the chimney cakes are not even close to authentic. Of course, because they're supposed to be rotisseried over open fire. Doesn't taste terrible, but shouldn't be called chimney cakes.

Bread tastes fine but the soft serve was not good at all. And def is smaller than it looks. Fits in a small styrofoam cup

Server was licking Nutella off her fingers as she was talking to us. She only had a glove on the other hand. Did not see a sink. Got grossed out and left.

Yelp
Have you heard of a chimney cake? Chimney Cakes, a sweet and savory way to eat this traditional Hungarian treat all year long and you can go to fashionvalleyca chimneynation it is soo delicious I love the toppings of sugar, coconut and you can add Nutella, fill it up with icecream, or get it savory where they add pepperoni or even a sandwhich, come watch them make it in front of your eyes and see them bake sooo delicious

Yelp
Recently checked out this popular kiosk at the fashionvalley mall with a friend and they're serving up both sweet and savory variations of this tasty treat that hails from Hungary. They're so fun to watch being made too! I got one with a cheddar shell filled with ham, cheese and salad. The shell is such a nice combination of crunchy and chewy! Next time I want to try a zaatar shell with labneh filling, and get a sweet one with ice cream for my son. Don't forget to get some lemonade - the hibiscus one I tried was really good!

Yelp
It was hard finding this place because nowhere does it say where this place was actually located in Fashion Valley. I had to sleuth a tad bit to find it. By coincidence I happen to unexpectedly bump into the owners in Silver Lake Ramen as I was eating lunch. The concept is similar to crepes. You can have savory or sweet. I chose sweet. I bought a little chimney with frozen yogurt. The "chimney" is a pastry. My mistake was I asked for the sprinkles.. it was hard to eat because I ended up with sprinkles everywhere! If you happen to be in Fashion Valley mall and want a treat or a quick bite to eat, check this place out. Decent pricing.

Yelp
I was shopping at Fashion Valley and wanted something sweet to snack on. This food cart sells chimney cakes, which can be sweet or savory- depending on what filling you want inside. I've had these before, so I'm glad that there is a location in San Diego now. I got the cinnamon chimney with a chocolate/vanilla swirl inside. This dessert melts fast, so you better take your photos quickly LOL. The soft serve was standard, but I did enjoy the bread shell, especially with the cinnamon coating. It was doughy inside, but had a slight crispy exterior and reminded me of a churro!

Yelp
I have traveled around the world and have had kurtos kalacs. Traditionally from Romania. I have had them in Prague, Russia, Italy and France. But the farther you get towards eastern Europe, the best they get. I have had them in many parts of the US and they always let down. These have come close to the traditional flavor. The dough was nice and soft. It did not break apart. It still had some some pull to it. It was nice and kind of elastic. Typically, when they are made in CA, they use quick rise yeast and it changes the flavor of the dough and it was its end up getting to tough and it always tastes very yeast like. Never mind the huge mounds of sugar and cinnamon they add to the them. It still does not hide the yeast flavor. Chimney nation uses regular rise yeast and its a good ratio. They use similar heated sources as traditional. They took about 15-20 min to make instead of the 5 min that they do at other places. Trust me the wait is worth it. Anyway i loved these and will definitely return!

Yelp
We stopped at Chimney Nation for a nice treat after our meal and it was quite a dessert. We had the vanilla soft serve (nothing out of the ordinary in flavor) with a sweet bread exterior crust. It was really a cute look (check out the photos). I haven't tried all the other items on the menu as I read all the wonderful reviews but, I will definitely venture back for a second try. It really is something eye catching and different which is what shoppers are looking for; kudos to you, Chimney Nation.

Yelp
While shopping at Fashion Valley checked out Chimney Nation located on the ground floor by Urban Outfitters. I tried a sweet Chimney cake filled with Nutella Spread which was like having a churro and donut with Nutella. Also tried a jalapeño cheddar Parmesan filled with ham, cheese , and arugula. The Hungarian sweet bread is baked with a crispy exterior and a fluffy doughy inside. Also available are ice cream ones. These are so easy to grab and go during Christmas shopping.

Yelp
Great place to try the famous Hungarian chimney cakes in San Diego. They have both sweet and savory versions I really liked the savory version with cheddar jalapeño.

Yelp
So my co-worker and I work in construction. We were working about a quarter mile down the road. We had alot of down time so I decided to go here. The lady working there was friendly but spoke very broken English so it was a bit hard to communicate with her. I had one of their sandwiches which was like $9.50. If you are looking for a small snack this is probably a good choice not exactly FILLING for $9.50. I told my co-worker it was decent but small for $9.50. He threw a fit I didn't take him or bring him back one, so I took him the next day. He asked for no arugula & no tomatoes, which he got, but what he got was practically by his words, "a pizza crust with cheese and 2 slices of cold cut lunch meat." WE aren't talking boars head lunch meat more like land-o-frost or foster farms lunch meat for $9.50. Regardless even leaving there not satisfied I figured their dessert MUST be better since it was not only bigger but more expensive. So by the end of our long 9 hour shift I decided I'll buy one, my buddy replied buy me one to. I walk the quarter mile to get there. I order the full dessert, one sugar with chocolate and vanilla & one cinnamin with vanilla. She hands me the cups and chimneys and from the pictures I posted which is my view i asked her, "Where is the ice cream." She replies inside. I ask her don't you fill the chimney with ice cream and put and top it off with a swirel?! She says no the ice creams inside. At this point I'm trying not to lose it on this lady AFTER spending $14.00 on 2 of these cones equating to $28.00, BUT like I mentioned before she doesn't speak English very well so I am not going to get anywhere further arguing with her; plus there was a lady and her family waiting already for a while to buy something. With all that being said this place is a rip off giving you flavored crust with less then a scoop of sub parts ok ice cream for $14.00 or cheap lunch meat in flavored crust for $9.50. Maybe another employee does it correctly? But this lady obviously was not taught how to execute what this company advertises in their pictures. The proof is in my pictures...

Yelp
Honestly this is not a place that should be a stand, this isn't the type of food meant for the speed of a stand as opposed to a place in the food court. still it's delicious, the chimneys are fresh, the combinations are delicious and it's one of the most unique foods you'd come across in a mall. my only complaint is i wish they had more options. still a chimney filled with ice cream or a za'tar crusted chimney with turkey and hummus will make you a happy and full camper.

Yelp
Delicious. I got the cheddar jalapeño savory cone sandwich w Black Forest ham, tomatoes, and arugula. Didn't realize it didn't come with spread, should've bought some on the side Bc the sandwich was a little dry without any condiments. That's on me though. Would 100% recommend over eating at a large corporation chain like wetzels.

Yelp
Kiosk in a shopping center trying to ride the mini Chimney Cake trend. Looking for an Eastern European experience, but not here. Language barriers make ordering somewhat difficult. Tried the dessert and sandwich options. Neither were very satisfying. Overall a blah experience.

Yelp
First time ever trying a chimney, and I have to say I'm truly impressed! I got a chimney ice cream cone dipped in coconut shavings, and let me just say, that's exactly what I needed! The ice cream is very creamy, and the cone of similar to a doughnut with a hardened exterior. I would definitely get it again if given the chance!

Yelp
I moved here from Eastern Europe, so I know the original taste of the Kurtos Chimney cake. This is so far the best I've ever had! The staff was super nice, the place is very clean, they wear masks and gloves and I've had the best Kurtos cake in forever! Give them a try!

Yelp
Wish I had taken a picture, but my Hungarian dad ate it way too fast!! If he approves, then honestly you know it's good and authentic. Glad to support fellow Hungarians here in SD! Get it and you won't be disappointed! Even the traditional sugar one is delicious.
