Denver’s Best Chinese Restaurants | Eater Denver

"The name may be generic, but the food at this strip-mall fixture is anything but. Look to the menu sections labeled “Chinese-Style Appetizers” and “Northeastern Chinese Cuisine” for compelling dishes such as noodle-like dry tofu silk with cilantro and tangy, garlicky guo bao rou (legit sweet-and-sour pork); round them out with delectable dumplings, beef rolls, and sizzling takes on Sichuan specialties, from dry-fried green beans to boiled fish in chili oil." - Ruth Tobias

I recently visited here and was thoroughly impressed! The beef broccoli and Lemon Chicken were absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. The decor was charming and created such a cozy atmosphere. What really stood out was the exceptional service. The staff was warm, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. It’s clear they take pride in what they do. I’ll definitely be returning and highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great dining experience. Keep up the fantastic work!

Google
Went in for dinner and had pretty good food with really great service. Building is modernly decorated and very well kept, nice atmosphere.

I didn’t realize this place is located in a little strip of stores. Very simple inside but the food was fresh and tasty. The tofu dishes don’t come with veggies so I requested that on the side and they were fine with making a side order of steamed veg. The mapo tofu was slightly spicy, nothing to worry about. My friend enjoyed the sweet and sour chicken and wonton soup. Egg rolls were more like spring rolls. Overall they were very nice and the woman was very attentive. Would definitely recommend it in the area.

Google
I ordered the sizzling beef and scallops and I literally got one scallop. The food had good taste but it was swimming in liquid. GThe portion size was on the small side and the fried rice had absolutely no taste!

Google
New owners took over a while back and are terrific! They invested a lot of money in remodeling. Vivian is very sweet and very accommodating. She goes out of her way to ensure special requests (vegetarian) are handled well. It is not fancy, but it is consistently good food and service!

Google
After a few years we decided to give it another shot. Terrible food. It was renovated and maybe new owners? Spring rolls were frozen, I asked and they actually said they changed because customers did not like the ones made from scratch. Fried rice was just old rice with some soy sauce in it, I asked to upgrade fried rice and no upgrade price, have to buy separate a rice dish and pay $12 more to throw in a few carrots, shrimp etc so I passed. Main course was just OK. Food seriously over priced too. Service was fine but why serve low quality food, I guess the trend is higher prices and lower quality food.

Google
My wife and I have been coming to this place for a couple of years now or more. Both delivery and dine-in. The food is consistently good and in my opinion among the best in this category and tier of food. I don't leave many reviews unless the business does something either very good or very bad. In this case it was VERY GOOD. I don't want to say exactly what it was staff did for my wife and I regarding our order simply b/c I don't want other people to have the expectation of this happening for them. It was above what you would expect from most places. I will tell you it was above and beyond! Would recommend this place! Great food and great service!

Google
It had been a while since our last visit. The owners have remodeled to a more modern style, which added to an excellent dining experience. The food was superb, and the staff truly happy you chose them for your meal.

Yelp
Delicious! I ordered Egg drop soup and Thai Basil chicken with Jalapeños. It was incredibly tasty! I will def be back! I was in on Sunday for lunch and the service super fast and friendly. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Not a bad choice for Chinese takeout in the area, but admittedly not my favorite. We got general chicken and some fried shrimp and rice. The breading on the chicken was nice and crispy, but it was a bit dry inside, like it had double fried or over-fried. I really enjoyed the rice, though could have used some veggies in it! The butterfly shrimp was good, but i think they tamped it down for some reason or the other (maybe to help searing?). It them a bit dry. Really delicious egg rolls, paired great with the sweet and sour. I'd definitely recommend these. Overall, not bad, but I'll try something else next time and less fried entrees.

Yelp
I've only been disappointed when ordering food here. The food is under seasoned, bland and greasy.

John B.

Yelp
Average in every way- wished it was as good as Tasty House. I have tried it every once in a while over the past 15-20 years-

Yelp
So, I picked up my order, got home, no rice. I ordered three entrees. I called and said that I will be back to pick up the rice. They put me on hold for 5 mins to speak to their manager. The "manager" picked up and said "no rice" and I said yep no rice. She said she needed to speak to her manager. I said I don't care who you need to speak too, I'm coming to pick up my rice. Got there, they said, do you have the receipt? Seriously? Finally got the rice, stingy servings. Would not recommend them.

Yelp
On par with the rest of the Asian restaurants in CR. There's really no standout Chinese place in the area so China Cafe will do. This is our go to Chinese due to proximity to our place in Larkspur. Food is decent and edible.

Yelp
A good spot in downtown castle rock. It seems to be very hot or miss on how busy this place is. Like many other places in the couple years, they seem to have had some problems keeping staff...because when it's busy it can take forever, and the portions seem noticeably smaller. On a slow or average day, it is a really enjoyable place. They seem like really good folks so I hope this business makes it. They are really good with the standard "American Chinese" dishes. The cashew chicken is a standout. My kids love the potstickers. They have changed the menu a bit so what used to be called "house chicken" I think might have a new name.

Yelp
China Cafe was a nice surprise. Castle Rock does not have a lot to offer in the way of Chinese food, but China Cafe fills the bill. We enjoy the Kung Pao Chicken and the Mongolian beef/chicken. The food is yummy and prepared incredibly fast . . . by the time we get there from 5 minutes away it is usually ready. I've had better Chinese, but I've also had far worse. Count on China Cafe to provide you with a good, solid offering, with a friendly greeting and reasonable prices.

Yelp
We ordered a month ago and the food was fabulous. Tonight not so much. Sweet and sour chicken came with no sweet and sour sauce. And no chicken inside. Couldn't eat it because it was so over fried. Vietnamese egg rolls came with no filling. Just the shell. I think it was so over fried the filling disintegrated. The kung pao chicken was good. Will not return again.

Yelp
I ordered China Cafe for delivery and it's delicious! Additionally, I had ordered a Thai tea but they called to tell me they thought the quality of the tea wasn't good so replaced it with egg rolls - what great customer service! Will definitely be ordering from here again.

Yelp
The dumplings were decent. Lo-mein noodles were on point. Fried rice and teriyaki chicken was mediocre. We don't live nearby so we would not travel back here for it but wouldn't say it's bad either.

Skyler L.

Yelp
Great service on a busy night. Food was awesome!! Highly recommend trying this place out!

Terry H.

Yelp
I love the food here. We've only done take out several times so far. Pot stickers, pork fried rice, hot and sour soup, and lots of other goodies. And the owner is an especially nice lady who is doing a super job making this a go-to place.
google avatar

Logan B.

Yelp
Great good. High prices. Not a lot of options here so this will fit the bill. Will recommend

Yelp
We're new to the area and this was the third Chinese restaurant we visited in the area. So good that we took our daughter back the next night to try other dishes. Friendly staff and owner, great portion sizes, good prices. This will be our "go-to" Chinese restaurant in Castle Rock!

Yelp
I'm sorry to say my first time here was a huge disappointment, ordered the lunch specials, one was chicken chow mein with fried rice and the other was sesame chicken with fried rice along with a Thai tea, the fried rice taste like white rice, no flavor, no veggies, just a brown color with one tiny piece of egg. The chicken chow mein was the strangest thing, I never seen crunchy noodles over chicken before, I was expecting soft noodles like pasta that's been cooked. They were stale too and tasteless, I moved them to the side. The sesame chicken was dry, not enough sauce, flavor was OK, not the best not the worst. The Thai tea was in a small glass bottle not homemade.

Nicohl E.

Yelp
Lomein was not tasty at all and plain. The noodles were thick and distasteful. The sesame chicken was too tough to cut or chew, the egg rolls are soggy and bitter. The beef tasted bad in the beef and broccoli. The wonton soup was the only item we liked.

Yelp
Excellent food (especially the moo shu chicken); good sized portions. What you expect from a great Chinese restaurant. Wish they delivered!
google avatar

Tracey B.

Yelp
Nice surprise! Honestly, this place was so good, much better than I anticipated as the outside does not look great. The prices are great, and large portions.

James L.

Yelp
If your looking for good Chinese food I suggest going here China cafe great food believe me when I say that. Best Chinese food in Castle Rock great flavor fresh ingredient s you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
It was open and near a freeway exit Honestly, we were driving through on our way to Denver and needed a non fast food lunch where we could sit and eat inside. The people were nice and food came out in a timely manner but was pretty average. I ordered a chicken low-mein and was pleased although it seemed extra greasy. The egg drop soup was spot on. My partner was not overly impressed with what they ordered and did not finish it. We tried boxing up and eating it later but it doesn't age well. Eat it immediately or don't eat it at all. Portions are large.

Yelp
We ordered food from here last night and we loved it! The orange chicken has good flavor, and the bbq pork in the bbq pork fried rice was delicious and didn't taste a tad gross like other places I've gone to.

James S.

Yelp
Typical ok food quality for local take out Chinese. Lots of choices. Nice on the phone. Fills the gap when you don't want to cook. Its really the standout place like this in Castle Rock. The meat seems to be higher quality where places like Toss Cafe are bit sketchier.

Yelp
We love China Cafe. It's the most convenient place to order out from when my husband and I work later than usual. Tonight 12-27-22 was one of those nights. Thank you for the delicious food!

Deborah K.

Yelp
I had the kung pao chicken. I liked it. Great flavor, plenty of chicken and lots of fresh vegetables. I ordered takeout and it was hot and ready when I picked it up and well packaged. I'll order again.

Yelp
Out of the Chinese places in Castle stock this one is my favorite. I usually order Jalapeño beef or Mongolian beef the lo me in the best here.

Gary F.

Yelp
Have had their Sesame Chicken and it is good (probably my personal favorite). Had Beef (tried Sesame, Hunan, Kung Pao & Szechuan if I remember) and these are varying levels of ok to good (thinking I enjoyed the Hunan and Kung Pao the most). Hot & Sour Soup is ok and better than a lot of places as there is some nasty Hot & Sour Soup out there in restaurant land. . Vegetable Egg Rolls are tiny and not the best value but taste ok. Never have dined within and always take out, so cannot comment on table service.

Sherri T.

Yelp
First time here, visited on a slow day. We enjoyed the sesame chicken, with good size chicken pieces versus primarily the crispy coating found at other similar restaurants. The cheese wontons had very little cheese and there was no dipping sauce offered - so the wontons were very dry and flavorless. The egg rolls had a funky bitter taste, not good. The egg drop soup lacked flavor, needed spice. May return for the sesame chicken!

Krzysztof T.

Yelp
This is a sad attempt at Chinese food...1/10...take the extra time and just drive in to Denver for decent take out

Angela B.

Yelp
Our go-to for takeout! Their delivery service is quick! Portions are large, plenty for 2-3 people

Yelp
So delicious!! Was looking for a takeout lunch spot close to my office and stumbled upon China Cafe. I was a little leery at first because it only gets 3 stars on Yelp but I decided to read them because sometimes stars don't tell the whole truth. Come to find out it's under new ownership and the most recent (good) reviews are spot on! Liyan runs the front of the house and her husband is the chef. The food is authentic and delicious and the menu is huge! They do both Chinese and Thai style cuisine and they make their own dumplings!! I ordered the jalapeno chicken and it had just the right amount of spice, tons of healthy and delicious vegetables and juicy chicken. I'll definitely be going back for more really soon. If you're looking for healthy, authentic and delicious Chinese in Castle Rock, China Cafe is your spot!

Michal R.

Yelp
We had the sesame chicken, the orange chicken and the Thai basil w/ beef and they were all DELICIOUS!!!

Yelp
You must expect the rule of "three" here. Every three year the ownership/management will change and the people you see out front will be different Every three weeks the food quality and taste will change. Try this .... order your favorite dish today. Order same thing three weeks from now. Might taste good, might taste terrible. No one in there controls what is coming out of that kitchen. Absentee management!

Yelp
Great service. The guy is a hard worker and an amazing cook. Best Chinese in Castle Rock
google avatar

Kaley S.

Yelp
Ordered take out, disappointing. All I ordered was swarmed chicken and steamed rice and I got soggy, over saucy breaded chicken. Didn't even seem fried....flavor wasn't good either. Then when I got to the bottom of my rice, 2 black hairs. So disgusting! Won't be going back even if they offered a free meal. Hoping I don't get food poisoning.

Yelp
New management improves the food. Ordered the orange chicken lunch for $8.25 and it was much better than years before. The coating is now thinner where before the breading was thick and gummy. Was amazed that the plate was piled with chicken with only a few pieces of onion and bell pepper. Will try the $11.95 dinner version of their orange chicken, order it to go, add a chopped stir-fried onion to it to bulk it up and spread it out for three diners. The lunch hot and sour soup was good (the Imperial Chinese restaurant on 431 S. Broadway, Denver, really makes good hot and sour soup) along with the egg roll. Chinese hot mustard goes well with the egg roll as well as the orange chicken. The friendly waiter asked how I was doing when I had tears streaming down my face from the mustard. Fighting back the corkscrew vapor twisting up my nose, I replied, "It's perfect."

Yelp
New owners. Much better. Great people. Good food. Lived in C.R. for years. Seen several different proprietor's. The food on a scale of 1 to 10 is a 9. That's because it's not fine dining. They do a kickass takeout during this COVID-19.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Food was very good and on time!! General Tsao's Chicken had a Great flavor. Vegetable Fried Rice had plenty of vegetables compared to some. Good Food!!
google avatar

Brenden U.

Yelp
Do not order from here. Period. Waited an hour for delivery, nothing. Called and was told it would be another 40 minutes for delivery or I could come pick it up and it would be ready in 15 minutes. Went to pick it up and sat there forever, another 30 minutes at least. I'm convinced we never wouldve even gotten our food had we not gone to pick up. On top of that we got a half ass apology and was on my way. Save yourself some time and find another Chinese restaurant in the area.

Yelp
Ordered delivery last night, Friday, Nov 13th, 2020. Food was piping hot, really good, and packaged well. Looking forward to a visit to the restaurant for dinner.

Heather G.

Yelp
Honestly I was pleasantly surprised. Sesame and general tso chicken with good crisp and flavor. Not soggy! Lo main no complaints and egg drop Soup very tasty! Definitely recommend and will order again.

Riley F.

Yelp
Super amazing food and kind staff. Definitely will be my go-to place from now on here in Castle Rock. Couldn't recommend somewhere more than this place.

Deborah V.

Yelp
I just had one of the worst meals in my lifetime from China Café. I had to wait an hour for my order. I had called it in they said 20 minutes. I got there in 20 minutes and had to wait another 40 minutes for my order. The Vietnamese eggrolls tasted like they were three days old and they were cold. The lemon chicken, also, tasted like it was a day or two old. It was dry and rubbery. The egg foo young, had a terrible texture. The vegetables were over cooked as well. I will not be going back.

Eric V.

Yelp
Best Chinese Food in Castle Rock. They usually meet the time they say it will be ready for takeout.
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
Congrats! You win an award for officially the worst Chinese food in Castle Rock! Get the delivery system under control as well as food quality. All it takes is one quality Chinese food joint to join Castle Rock and you guys as well as Toss Asian are out of business. Take pride in your company and do something about the horrible food and delivery times. Good luck!!!
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
Wish I could give a review without a star. This was the worst Chinese I have ever experienced...EVER!! The fried rice was not fried at all and it was chopped up like cauliflower rice. The taste was awful. I ordered spicy garlic shrimp. I received not spicy not garlic SCALLOPS!! Thank god I'm not allergic to them anymore. The general tso chicken was mostly breading and no chicken. I will never order from here ever again. It was absolutely disgusting
google avatar

Y S.

Yelp
New owners, amazing place. The owner used to be the chef at Lucky China and has brought her amazing dumplings and noodle soups to China Cafe II. As a native Beijing girl looking for her dumpling fix, this is my place. Highly recommend beef noodle soup and pork/napa dumplings.
google avatar

Paula B.

Yelp
Way too expensive for the quality of food. $75 for three entrees, fried rice and some apps. Expect that at PF Chang's, but not a strip mall Chinese place. While it was edible, the flavor of the food was lacking. Way too much breading on the orange chicken. Positive, the Kung pou beef was good. But no spice. The quest for good Chinese in CR continues.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Picked up dinner from here twice in he last couple months. Both times I ordered the orange chicken. The first time I got the spiciest orange chicken. The second time I just got hot. The chicken was cooked well and the breading was crispy. There was plenty of sauce as well. The flavor was ok. It felt more like sesame chicken than orange chicken. I also had the wontons the second time. The wontons were good. They also gave me plenty of sweet and sour sauce. The portion size is good enough for two meals. The staff was very friendly as well.
