China Cafe Review - Downtown LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"One of the OG Grand Central Market tenants, China Cafe has been serving Chinese-American classics that have barely changed since 1959. Expect things like chow mein, kung pao chicken and off-menu egg rolls. We like to elbow our way into a seat at the bar, order a huge bowl of wonton soup for $5.50, and load it with chili sauce." - Jess Basser Sanders

Google
I have been coming to China Cafe with my family for many years. It’s one of our favorite classic Chinese restaurants. I eat the beef & broccoli and my wife and daughter like the chicken and vegetables. The owners are very kind and they have a dining room for lunch and dinner.

Tammi H.

Google
Place was ran down and the person I picked up order from was absolutely not friendly at all. The food was above average. Didn't get our egg rolls. Will try again. I give all restaurants 2 tries.

Tawanna T.

Google
It was very flavorful and the right amount of sauce.

Bob P.

Google
The food is good when you get it but it can take up to 30 minutes or more during a lunch time or dinner. Standard plate cost is $12 per person including a drink. The issue I definitely have is that the temp outside is about 27 degrees and it is about 34 in the restaurant dining area. Makes you wish you get the food faster and get out. If I would have known this, I would have went to Arby's or basically any place than here. Best thing to do is get the food to go.

Google
Food was very tasty, probably the best Chinese I've had in the Tulsa area. My biggest gripe would be the lack of service and Styrofoam containers. I suspect it's still a remnant of Covid precautions. I had the Roasted Garlic-chicken, just the right amount of sweet and heat. My wife got the honey Glazed and it was a bit heavy handed on the sauce. I would give it a 4.5 of 5 overall. Pic is the Roasted Garlic chicken

Google
I've never ordered lo mein instead of fried rice and received plain noodles. No veggies. No seasoning. No nothing. I asked if I could substitute sesame sauce instead of sweet and sour on my order of sweet and sour chicken. They said it would be $2.50 more but no charge if I ordered sesame chicken with the sauce on the side. It's the exact same chicken so why? They also put all the food on top of the rice and/or plain lo mein instead of separating them in the to go box. The only decent thing was the crispy little wontons. They're better than most places because the breading is thinner like phyllo dough.

Google
Food is getting worse and worse every time I order. I cut out shrimp for more chicken and there was less chicken than the regular dinner usually idle so disappointing!!

Zylee

Google
We ordered some food from the place and the chicken didn’t taste good at all it’s like they literally dumped a bottle of soy sauce on it and then the rice was so dry and did not taste normal and their service sucked I don’t recommend going here

Yelp
According to another reviewer, this mom-and-pop restaurant has been in business over 35 years. Inside the restaurant is clean, very nicely decorated, pride in ownership is apparent. The owner may have a touch of OCD. The lady came out from behind the counter to square up the pile of menus, after I had shuffled through them. The tables and chairs are arranged and policed, to maintain perfect formation, as were the meticulously aligned condiments on the tables. As we were leaving, the owner wasted no time to correct the miss alignments we had caused at our table. Up by the door, an attractive little pond surrounded with live plants and colorful decorations. No coy fish. Instead, in the pool coins glisten. Evidence of many past wishes made. The ambiance and décor of this little Chinese restaurant feels relaxing. Maybe even a little classy. Check the pictures. And then there is the cheap ass flimsy plastic tableware, used to eat your meal out of a Styrofoam container. If you get your meals to go, you don't care. A plate with metal tableware would improve the in-restaurant dining experience logarithmically. Minimal service. Order at the counter. Fetch your drinks and flimsy plastic fork yourself. The food was excellent. We had the Hunan Chicken. Fresh vegetables, with a generous serving of flash fried chicken breast chunks, all covered in a magnificent tasty brown sauce. Yes, it was good! 5 stars if you get you food to go (you already knew you were going to have to eat with that flimsy plastic fork.) 4 stars if you eat in. Having to eat your food out of a Styrofoam container, in this nice little restaurant just doesn't feel right. One of the nicest small Chinese restaurants in the Tulsa area. This restaurant is recommended!

Yelp
This used to be our go-to Chinese to-go place. But the last two trips there we've been so disappointed. Last time her chicken was very tough. My egg foo yang had an unidentifiable flavor. Yukie would describe both meals. Today I ventured WAY OUT OF MY BOX! Tried the Tequila pork! Mixed box of sadness! My suggestion here is, leave the Mexican flavors to the restaurant next door. This was my worst meal in my 76 years of eating nearly everything that's put in front of me! Wife's sesame chicken tough. I ate one third of a piece of her chicken. Absolutely the worst $36 I've spent in a long time What has happen here? Like I said and my past reviews will say it, this WAS my favorite place on 141st street.

Yelp
This is the best kept secret in Glenpool, Oklahoma. I absolutely love this little restaurant. You can pick it up to go. Or depending on the hours you can eat in.. The food is always fresh hot and delicious.

Kellee F.

Yelp
The food is great, but service is soooo slow I do take out & usually it is 45 minutes even calling in beforehand

Suzi G.

Yelp
Seriously the best sweet and sour chicken. Fresh and crispy every time. Fast service and great prices.
google avatar

Shelly W.

Yelp
Yummy. Delicious take out. I love the Mongolian Beef and sesame chicken. Never had anything bad.

David M.

Yelp
Great food and fast, the only thing I will say is that the dining room isn't open for dinner. So when you want some flood carry out this is your choice but if you're looking for a place to sit down and have a meal then you might be disappointed
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
This place is great! We have been going here for years, they cook everything fresh to order so there usually is a wait, but it's worth it! Food is always fresh and delicious! We typically get beef and broccoli combo, chicken chow mein, or generals chicken.

Joe M.

Yelp
My new favorite sesame chicken. Great fresh food. A Glenpool gem for sure. Dining room is only open for lunch. Takeout only for dinner.
google avatar

Zain K.

Yelp
Waited 35 minutes for my chicken with mixed veg, then reminded them about it and waited 15 minutes more. The food came far from redeeming the service, being both very greasy and very salty.
google avatar

Linda I.

Yelp
Friendly staff. It would probably be better for them to be a strictly takeout only place. Their dining room area is nicely decorated, but there is really no table service. You place your order at the cash register, get you cup for whatever it is you want to drink and self serve the drinks, and sauces. They did bring our order out to the table, but they serve their dishes on styrofoam plates and only have plastic utensils which we had to go get for ourselves. We ordered chicken lo mein and mo shu pork. The food was decent but not very impressive. Had to add salt, pepper and soy sauce to bump up the flavor. Can't say I will be back there again.
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
Tried this place for first time. Sadly did not meet my expectations I had sweet n sour chicken and Lo mein. Ok chicken texture and breading was perfect but no flavor sweet n sour sauce ok not that great and I specifically asked for the sauce on the chicken not on the side because I like it soaked in sauce but nope they didn't put it on it. Ok lo mein I think that was the worst lo mein I've ever had worse than a buffet lo mein.

Erin S.

Yelp
Great food and so much of it! Really like that the dinners come with a portion of sweet and sour chicken. Kids love it!
google avatar

Luke C.

Yelp
I was extremely underwhelmed by the taste of the orange chicken here. It wasn't necessarily nasty, just didn't taste that good. After waiting 30-45 minutes for a call in, it was not a pleasant experice. Definitely will not be back.
google avatar

Callie R.

Yelp
This is not the place to go if you want super authentic Chinese food, it's all made with a little local 'spin.' Having said that we still order to go food about once a month. Entrees are flavorful and well balanced with meat and veggies. No weird artificial tasting meat like you get at some of the cheaper takeout Chinese places. Sweet and sour sauce is actually tangy and doesn't just taste like sugar.
google avatar

Kim E.

Yelp
Amazing chicken Hawaiian fried rice. Place is always clean and fried rice is worth the 45 minute drive for us from Broken Arrow. Closed on Sundays and close for a couple hours every day but open 4 to 8 for dinner. Prices are very affordable.
google avatar

Nate T.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite place to eat Chinese food. I live closer to PF Chang's and would prefer driving from Downtown Tulsa, where I live, to Glenpool. It's a great family owned restaurant with excellent food. Be sure to order a combo and you'll surely ha e enough food for two meals! My favorites are the Egg Foo Young, Sesame Chicken, and Seafood Delight. With a combo meal you get an order of Sweet & Sour Chicken and an Egg Roll. How can you beat that?!

Jenna S.

Yelp
Sadly, I'd pass. We were quoted a 35 minute wait time, which turned into an hour. Underwhelmed with the food; I am all for liberties with cooking, however a staple should taste like a staple.
google avatar

Brenda A.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered from here recently and it was just awful. We asked for lo mein noodles and were given chow Mein instead! The rice was awful and it was super over cooked and mushy no thanks. I do not recommend to spend your money here. There's better around here
google avatar

Vanessa H.

Yelp
Food is fantastic but make sure that they write your order down correctly otherwise you get no receipt and don't get home with everything you ordered originally. Disappointing since their food is so much better than other Chinese restaurants. Need a better system and to give out receipts when customers pay with cash!

Bob S.

Yelp
The food is as good or better than any Chinese food I have ever eaten anywhere. It's always has fresh vegetables and the meat is always good and no waste. The service is good and friendly. The only downside I see is the CHEAP styrofoam plates and silverware. It looks like a little improvement could be made there for little cost.
google avatar

Bill Z.

Yelp
Greatest fried rice dishes in existence, I'd LOVE if someone were to prove me wrong. Been eating here for about 25 years now and it hasnt changed one bit, because it hasnt had to. Ive been searching for its equal or even its competitor...never found one even close.
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
This has got to be one of the best Asian Restaraunts my family and I have been to. The food is cook to order, the vegetables are fresh, and meat isnt tough. As far as service goes its left all up to you here food is served on styrofoam plates and you are given a cup with ice. If you need more ice you must take it to the counter and refill it. Thats the only downfall about this place but the food is AMAZING.
google avatar

Yelp
Look, I get it. You're the only Chinese food in town. It's ALWAYS busy. You probably get paid like crap. But, look...I don't care how good your food is(to wit: really good), there is little you can do to win me over with poor service. Everything seems to annoy the staff here. Even calling in an order ahead of time left me waiting on the phone for minutes listening to them ring up walk-ins. Hire more people or don't answer the phone. I wanted to just get Pizza Hit instead, but, like any abusive relationship, China Cafe still has the thing that will keep me coming back for more: great food. If only it sucked so I could write this place off and drive 10 miles to Panda Express(where I don't even really like the food...but at least they know how to treat people). Anyway. Come for the food, try to ignore how inconvenient is seems to be that you are there and I suppose you could call it a "good time." I guess. It's the only Chinese place in town, so "you get what you get and don't throw a fit," as my lovely wife would say.

Steven B.

Yelp
The food is terrible waste of money it taste as if was cooked in a microwave. Two bites and threw it directly in the garbage where it belongs.

Joey T.

Yelp
Once upon a time there was a really good Chinese restaurant... It mixed some local things like jalapenos into their food and was, well kick a$$... Well that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away... You know a time when they actually had metal forks. I just popped in today after not having been in quite some time. Last time I did try to go they were closed for a week to go on vacation... Well apparently they should have stayed away because they aren't any worth a flip now. Our table had the following: Coconut shrimp, fried dumplings, egg rolls, pad thai and chinese fajitas.... A pretty good mix of things. Well the shrimp were very skimpy especially for the price which came to about $1.10 per shrimp... were they big? No a little larger than popcorn sized and smashed flat before being battered in coconut... taste was just okay. fried dumplings... not bad. But then how do you screw up fried dumplings. egg rolls... well now this just plain sucked. They weren't pork they appeared to be chicken although the were really just veggies and chicken gristle with maybe a pinch of actual meat so you knew it wasn't pure veggie... In the end everyone that tried one spit it out, it was just that bad. chinese fajitas.... tortillas weren't warm and were a little stale. Rice was very oily and had no veggies fried in with it... it was just fried rice... beef was way overcooked to the point that it melted in your mouth which isn't good at all. chicken in it was the best part but over all it was only okay. pad thai... sorry but pad thai shouldn't have the consistency of chicken noodle soup. It was way too much sauce and the sauce was sickeningly sweet, pad thai shouldn't be sweet it should be a more spicy than sweet. It was pretty much a chinese version of a thai dish and nothing like real pad thai. Now it was edible and would appeal to someone that like sweet food.... but over all not that good. Now the real pain in the back side wasn't the food it was the forks. They give you plastic fork to eat your food off of... little tiny plastic forks to eat food that is oily enough that it pretty much slides off the tiny little plastic fork. Come on people for the price they charge you should give me something metal to eat with and it shouldn't be served on Styrofoam plates. Honestly I probably could have given it 1 star but it was more edible than places I've given 1 star and I couldn't give it 1.5 stars so It has a 2 but don't expect great food... it just isn't that good.

Yelp
Owners are from texas and had a five star restaurant there. Opened this place 17 years ago and is a great place to eat. Staff is nice, large portions and great prices. Best Chinese food in the area. However, their hours are a little weird. They close at 230 from lunch and reopen at 430 for dinner, but close at 8, so hope you dont have late night cravings or you will be out of luck.
google avatar

Carlie W.

Yelp
I absolutely love the food.. But last time I called the woman who answered seemed surprisingly rude, talking to someone in the background making me in which have to repeat my order
google avatar

Tooba S.

Yelp
They don't take credit cards or debit cards, only cash. I'm sure they lose a lot of business that way. We wanted to try it, but we dont carry cash. Needless to say we won't be trying out this POS. it looks very crappy from the outside and inside as well. It's inside of a very old shopping center.
google avatar

C C.

Yelp
Moo shoo beef is excellent! Sweet and sour chicken is also very good. My new favorite Chinese restaurant. They don't take credit cards but the price is very reasonable for lots of food.
google avatar

Gerald W.

Yelp
I've eaten at China Cafe for several years. The food is always excellent. Fresh ingredients cooked when you order. Don't get in a hurry because it takes some time to get your food out to the table. Also come hungry because the portions are large. The restaurant now has new owners but the original owners are still there making sure the new folks keep things the same. One big change is that they now accept credit cards.
google avatar

Celia M.

Yelp
Still great food. They, however, have stopped taking checks for the time being and are now beginning to take credit cards.
google avatar

Wassim M.

Yelp
Pepper steak, Mongolian beef, Hawaiian chicken and Korean beef to name some of my favorites. I've tried nearly the entire menu and nothing ever disappoints. The best Chinese food you can get in the Tulsa metro.
google avatar

Nick R.

Yelp
Eaten here for years, always went through the trouble of getting cash since they didn't accept cards, but now I don't have to worry about that. Good price, good quality, and good quantity
google avatar

Tabitha S.

Yelp
The food is the best Chinese I've ever had in OK, but the place can be a little frustrating. There's always only a 50/50 chance that they'll be open on any given day, and they seem to change their hours on a whim... But the food is worth the hassle, and when they are open, they seem to always be busy (at least they are every time I'm there).

Wayne W.

Yelp
We have enjoyed the China Cafe since they first opened over 25 years ago. The family has maintained the quality that started their success. Food portions are large, and price is reasonable. Always prepared fresh and tasty. Absolutely the best egg rolls anywhere I have been.

Sabrina N.

Yelp
China Cafe has its hits - the BBQ Pork Fried Rice for instance. It also has its misses - a lot of them. This is NOT the best Asian food I've ever eaten. As far as fast food Asian cuisine goes China Cafe is a little bit better than your Wang Wang's, Rice Bowl's and Hot Woks. I don't think its even as good as Pei Wei. When I want excellent Asian cuisine I go to Mekong River. You'll spend the same amount and get a much MUCH higher quality meal. Those who are saying this is the best Asian Restaurant they've ever been too need to expand their horizons. Service is Ok. Will we still eat here from time to time? Probably. Its two miles away and has better food than the Asian place around the corner. I'll drive a couple miles to eat there but not any further.
google avatar

Kimber L.

Yelp
Our favorite spot for Chinese! The Hawaiian Chicken is amazing. Every order is always ready on time and still piping hot by the time we get home. They only accept cash but the prices are incredibly reasonable. Don't be fooled by the location or cash only policy, China Cafe is truly a dining treasure!
google avatar

Tracy B.

Yelp
Love the food! We always do carry out. Bring cash or checks. Great portions and great taste!! Restaurant is pretty simple but functional...so ambiance not over the top but as I said, we generally just pick up our food. Great prices!

Jerry C.

Yelp
service is OK. Food is above average. I am hard to please when it comes to takeout as I am from California and the chinese over is 10xs better than anywhere else.. except maybe New York.

Erin T.

Yelp
I lived in Glenpool and surrounding areas 8 years ago, and often frequented the China Café for their fresh veggie stir fries, light and crispy egg rolls and sweet and sour chicken. I was hesitant after reading Joey T's review, but I took a chance, picked up my hubby for lunch and tried it. IT WAS EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS I REMEMBER! They don't spice it up as much as they used to, but I'm sure they'd have no trouble adding some extra heat if you asked. Super nice people, super clean kitchen/restaurant. Here's a tip: ignore long-winded reviews and just go try it. You'll be glad you did!

J M.

Yelp
This is quite good Chinese food. It was recommended to us when we moved to town ten years ago. We have had their food many many times. Most everything we have tried from them is very good. Some typical names for the same dish at other places are different here. For instance, moo goo gai pan is called chicken vegetable. It can also be had with beef, pork, or shrimp. But it is the same vegetables and chicken flavored sauce. The portions are also very good sized. And most everything can be ordered in a combo that includes sweet and sour chicken or pork and an egg roll. I would recommend this to anyone in the area that is hungry for Chinese food.

Danielle C.

Yelp
Best Chinese I have ever had. The owners are very nice and friendly. The food is good every time. I have been eating here for 15 years, and now live approximately 30 minutes away, but I'll still drive there because there food is so good. They only take cash and checks. It may not look like much from the outside, but wonderful food. It's also VERY clean, and all the ingredients taste fresh.

Nikki L.

Yelp
This is by far the best Chinese restaurant I have eaten at. The food is so fresh! The portions are huge. So be prepared to have left overs. Staff is every nice and polite. When ordering to go, the food is always ready in a timely manner and piping hot! The honey chicken is fav go to dish. So fresh and delicious!

Laura W.

Yelp
i also found rude person when i called...she really didnot wish to accomodate my request which was if i could order moo goo gai pan with NO sauce (i am celiac) and i just wished to have a white sauce and nothing else...not a huge request...just omit soy or any gluten sauce...she hung up on me and i was just asking question...i will go to the other chinese restaurant in glenpool which i know is not quite as good but very friendly and accomodating...before i had celiac disease i ate at china cafe many times but no more...i was deeply hurt
