Yelp
This is an old school Chinese-American restaurant, with a great take on everything I grew up with. Yes, the Valley has some absolutely amazing, authentic, regional Chinese cooking in the south east valley: Shaanxi Garden, Old Town Taste, Heng's, but sometimes you don't want vervy, buzzing Szechuan pepper on the tongue, and not everyone appreciates fabulous Pig's Ear in Chili Oil or Chili Tripe.
Sometimes you just want the more mundane, comfortable stuff you grew up with...the frankly more mainstream Americanized versions of Cantonese Classics. But, you want them cooked perfectly.
China Chili brings you the dive bar feel of an old institution, and damn good versions of the classics.
We went with the classics, and had egg rolls...solid but not exciting, a darn good Westlake Beef Soup, Orange Chicken and Sweet and Sour Prawns, that were also better than dishes I remembered from my youth, and a really good house fried rice with generous BBQ Pork slices.
But the dish that blew me away was the Scrambled Eggs with Shrimp. Tender plump shrimp, in perfectly fluffy, moist scrambled eggs, with hints of onion and sweet wine, it was one of my favorite dishes so far this year. I'd go back for that alone.
The food portions are very generous, and they have inexpensive beer and sake, and an ice cold Tsing Tao always puts a smile on my face.
The dishes arrived immediately from the kitchen with an army of attentive servers, so we never felt ignored...or pestered. And, if you described what you like their suggestions were helpful...I don't understand people who say the service was inattentive....they must not be inquisitive. If I asked, they answered even if they had to struggle with language.
Definitely the kind of place I'd take the parents to and feel like there were plenty of safe choices for them and damn good food for me with a few surprises.
