The Best Chinese Restaurants in and Around New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"One of the West Bank’s favorite Chinese restaurants, China Doll’s Cantonese delights are well-informed by the family who founded it, the mother and siblings of the owner of Ming’s in Lakeview (the family also founded China Orchid). Try their version of barbecue shrimp and catfish or crab fingers Cantonese." - Beth D’Addono

1st time I give this place a try, my noodles was over cooked which made it so soft when I ate it. Not much flavor but for the amount of food was good. 2 star is fair enough

Lunch was EVERYTHING! I stopped by China Doll for lunch and… they did not disappoint! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted and seated right away. The service was fast, friendly, and smooth all around. I placed my order and within 5–7 minutes my food hit the table—piping hot and packed with flavor. Let’s talk portions—top tier. You definitely get your money’s worth and then some. I left full, satisfied, and already thinking about what I’m ordering next time. The food was amazing, fresh, and seasoned perfectly. If you’re in the Harvey area and want good Chinese food with great service, this is the spot. I’ll 100% be back!

Google
I’m rating this place by the last time I ate here… I think maybe 23 years ago at this point in my life… this is my biased opinion. This is how I grew up… this place, as a child, were the happiest moments in my life with my family and friends. Life happens. You don’t see people and they go away like the seasons… but I need to go back to the 504 soon. I miss this place so much and all the reviews and pictures make me reminisce of my childhood… when I was innocent and had less responsibilities… my parents were great for spoiling me for the rest of my life on Cantonese cuisine. There is and will never be anything better… there was a place in, Utah that came close. I do believe a family member of China Doll started his own restaurant. Their Lo Mien is just as good.

My meal yesterday was pretty good as usual. Nothing too exciting. Sweet and sour shrimp with shrimp fried rice. Great prices and service. Love the hot and sour soup.

Google
China Doll's quality has only increased over the years. They're easily the best Chinese food on the west bank. The Mandarin Chicken and Egg Rolls are superb. Huge portions, too.

M Prime

Google
Pretty good. Fresh taste not nearly as salty as others. Egg roll is homemade loaded with shrimp and pork. Purchased My "standard" curry chicken, extra hot. As a chilly head I rate it mild. Portion size is huge IMO. The only negative thing was the egg roll was packed inside the package and not separate. When the takeout box leaned the sauce for the main dish soaked the egg roll. But the egg roll was...still good.. just mushy on the outside.

Google
Great food! Fast service, friendly customer service and great value and portion size. I always order a pepper steak plate with shrimp fried rice and chow chow. I’ve learned that a chow chow is something I have not been able to find at any other Chinese restaurant so it’s a must every time I order food.

Christie Regnier

Google
Best chinese food I've ever eaten hands down. Busy restaurant, quick seating. Excellent service. Dine in or take out. The Chocho appetizer is delicious. Egg roll is great. Dinners are ample and as good as they look. The only thing is they put peas and carrots in their hot and sour soup, which ruined it for me.. This place is awesome, and I can't wait to go back again.

Yelp
Writing this review post nap because woosh. I heard about this place from a coworker so while on this side we decided to try it out. First, it was packed in there but we received service promptly. The waiter was really nice when he arrived. Off to the food! O.m.g. I am a firm believer in another spot in Nola but this place is just as great. We got the dark meat boneless chicken with vegetables and the sweet and sour chicken. The batter and the cook of the chicken straight perfection. The rice top tier as well. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was hubs sweet and sour sauce. Good came out fast and hot. I'm getting hungry again just thinking about it. If near the area this is a must try. All the pics and two drinks at lunch came out to 30 bucks pre tip.

Yelp
I walked in and was met with a line. I asked for a Togo menu while I waited, but was pointed to a paper menu taped to the wall. I took a picture of the menu with my phone and waited back in line. Although taken back with the immediate experience, once it's your turn to order, the workers are very nice and pleasant from taking your order to giving your order. I'm looking for a general tso spot on the westbank and wanted to give this a try. I got home was surprised. Normally general tsos would come with broccoli, but this one from China doll had onions and green bell peppers. It was an off-putting experience. I'll be continuing my search for the best general Tsos chicken on the West Bank.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants on the West bank. The food is outstanding. I started with the hot and sour soup. I then had the lunch special of General Tso's chicken. The portions are huge and you will need to take home leftovers for an additional meal. The service is SO fast that my soup arrived, and then almost immediately thereafter, my lunch arrived. Next time, I will order the soup and then, when that arrives, i will order my lunch special. The prices are good too.

Stacy F.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food. Great drinks. Excellent service. Hoping to return soon!!! Crab rangoon excellent, mandarin chicken excellent. General Taos chicken excellent. Combo house fried rice best ever! Egg drop soup, wonton soup & egg rolls were wonderful. Fabulous Mai Tai

Joyce M.

Yelp
I picked up the combination fried rice to go today between 1145 and 12 noon. I started to eat it when I got home. I was so disappointed in the quality and taste I fed it to my dog. The rice was over cooked or probably held for too long. There was so freshness to the dish and the taste did not resemble fried rice at all. It tastes like a bad gravy was added. It was over seasoned to cover up the lack of freshness. The rice had the color of leftovers and there was no room to add soy sauce because it was already very salty. Disgusting!

Yelp
Haven't been here in some years due to decline in food quality had a date here today the service is even worse than it was years ago there the waiter walked pass me three times before acknowledging us then almost rushed us and it was nowhere near closing (7pm) had no plates when we sat down I had to get me and my date plates from a empty nearby table. He brought my eggrolls out that we ordered with entree ten minutes before food came out the extra sauce that was order was not there I asked the lady for the sauce and she proceeded to argue with me saying that I didn't order a sauce only for the waiter to walk up and confirm that I did in fact order it and went to get it. Needless to say the service was horrible and as a native I will not be visiting here again to many bad experiences
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
I went for take out after it being recommended on instagram. It was so bland. It said spicy next to the entree. Not spicy and not tasty. Crab rangoon was only decent tasting item. We will not be back. Over $50 down the drain! Won't be back!

Yelp
Quick and fast. Went for dinner and was in and out in less than an hour. The lo mien did not have the regular noodles but a good portion. Fried rice was a miss, the general tso's chicken was good, and the soup was amazing.

Yelp
Excellent, at lunch you get the lunch special and you will leave with a Togo box. Manhatten blvd off westbank expressway.

Yelp
What a Huge disappointment. We haven't eaten here in over a decade and had such fond memories. The service was great the food was so bland. I've had more flavorful food in the hospital. Crab soup has no crab that I could find. Nothing had flavor. It was an expensive lesson.
google avatar

Yelp
I crave Cho Cho. Everything else doesn't compare. The egg is nice. The fried rice is fried rice. The Cho Cho is amazing. Typically I order 2 orders of Cho Cho and I don't wanna be bothered. However sometimes the Cho Cho isn't crispy, I guess the cook is busy. The condiment sauce that comes with Cho Cho is really good although I prefer the Cho Cho as it comes, sauce not needed. I May end up getting some this evening because of this review.

Yelp
Good quality Chinese food at reasonable price. I side could use some updates but it's a good experience with good service

Caitlin B.

Yelp
Delicious!!!! Great quick service, not expensive, huge portions! love the sweet and sour sauce too
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, fast food. Not always the friendliest but not rude. Can eat in now which is great but hard to order over phone

Yelp
Heard through the grapevine that China doll was back in as good as ever! So I went back and then the next week I went back, and then the next week I went back and it's been consistently good overall. Glad to find a new place since my go to close down.

Stephanie J.

Yelp
Great Chinese lunch specials! Service is fast, great for business lunch! Love the fresh eggrolls, and the wonton soup is hearty and tasty!
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
Had to make that trip back to the Doll. Only thing different was this time I got double rice instead of the Cho cho. I didn't want to chance another incident. This is now my go to spot over Chinese kitchen. The option to call in your order too is a game changer along with the delicious large portion of food
google avatar

Darkskin B.

Yelp
Years later... their service has gotten SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER!! I don't know what they did but the take out service is great! Everyone says please and thank you. They're accurate in the orders. And the attitudes have disappeared. I still see a few of the older ones that have been there for YEARS and they haven't changed one bit but I don't deal with them either so all is good. The food is great and the wait time is pretty good. I think the price is very reasonable for what you get. Good everyone! Treat people how you want to be treated!

Yelp
I loveeeeeeeeee their chow chows! Food is great. Big lunch portion but it is very busy. The atmosphere is nice.

Yelp
I've dined at China Doll since elementary school! I even worked here for one summer during high school taking "To-Go" orders. The owners and their daughter were always so sweet and caring during my time there. There's not much I can add that hasn't been said to highlight the high quality and consistency of food at China Doll. As a former employee the one thing that sets China Doll apart is the cleanliness of this restaurant from front to back. My favorite items from the menu are the shrimp fried rice and Cho Cho. The shrimp fried rice filled with shrimp and the rice boiled perfectly not gummy at all. The Cho Cho is always fried to perfection and crispy. It's even tasty the day after. During Covid, indoor dining is restricted however the take out counter is open and very efficient. All employees wore masks and plexiglass placed at the take our counter.

Yelp
When I lived in the New Orleans Westbank, this place is very popular when it comes to Chinese food. My girlfriend and her family live near where they can order takeout if not choosing to dining in. Even when we moved to Virginia, we would stop by during each Christmas visit and eat there and most of the time the food was top notch from service to quality. This visit however posed a big difference. As like many restaurants across the country, they're doing strictly takeout due to the pandemic. Upon entering inside the building, they have signs requiring face masks and hand sanitizer stations. Also, the entrance to the dining area is blocked by chairs. So, we would have to go on the right side of the bar to pick up your order. There were a bunch of orders showing that the community was still supporting the business. One sign on the door says 5 people can enter at a time. When we got there, it was slightly more than 5 people, even though they were wearing masks. And it looked like there was some confusion with one of the orders that was placed by another party where they requested for a refund (another story). Once we picked up our orders, we headed back to my girlfriend's childhood home. Now remember when I said the food was top notch? Well, not this time. I ordered a boneless chicken combination lunch plate (all-white meat) with fried rice, veggies and an egg roll. Unfortunately, the chicken didn't have much flavor. The fried rice was light in texture and color, was bland and the shrimp looked like it was processed rather than shrimp you would see straight off the Gulf of Mexico. The egg roll itself was more like a kitchen sink with veggies, meat and gravy mixed inside, which was odd. On every visit, my meal would be so big that I would save the rest for later on in the night or the next day. But I ended up throwing it all away :( As for China Doll, I'm sure they are struggling mightily during the pandemic. The reason for the quality of the food is maybe the result of vendors not being able to supply the usual fare which might have them 'cutting corners' just to get food out to their usual customers. Again, just speculation, not fact. I just hope that once this pandemic clears up, they'll be able to function on a normal basis. And we'll be there to support them as much as we can.

Yelp
OMG! Those cho-cho's....oooooh, those cho-chos, they will never, ever, ever, ever, (one more time), ever disappoint. I just placed an order for two cho-chos and baby let me tell ya, they are still as good as they were pre-COVID. Those cho-chos are like, "COVID won't stop me from tasting good, humph!" Ha,ha,ha,ha! Seriously, China Doll has some of the most amazing and authentic Chinese food on the Westbank and I'll definitely support them because they take pride in producing delicious food. If you haven't had a cho cho from here, you're missing out! Stop by and try one.
google avatar

Kurt L.

Yelp
This is my favorite "goto" when my main supplier is out. They always have good and consistent product and they are "good neighbors". The "crab Rangoon" is to DIE FOR. but seriously

Brandie S.

Yelp
This place has the worst food pickup customer service I have ever encountered. I went to pick up an order for my mom today. They asked for her name. I gave it to them; I also told them two of the ordered items, one being a special order. They refused to provide me with the order. This was not paid for as they don't take payments over the phone. I had left my phone on the charger in my car. They would not allow me to pay for my order unless I gave them the phone number of the person who ordered it. I went to grab my phone. I then had to wait--at the back of the line. When I told the gentleman, this was ridiculous. I had 4 to 5 employees yelling at me. It's policy! After being yelled at, I told them to keep the order. Now, I'm in my 40's. They called my mother and gave her a completely different story. Not only did they lie, they have the worst customer service I have ever encountered. If you think cellphone customer service is terrible, go here. This used to be one of my must-have foods when visiting my family. I will never step foot here again. I advise you to do the same.

Yelp
Going ahead with five stars here, primarily because of cho-chos. These hot crispy chewy delights are a standout item on the China Doll menu, and worth the trip to the West Bank if you are looking for something a lil out of the ordinary fare of American Chinese restaurants. The rest of the menu was good, standard Chinese food, not greasy, not too salty (though one of the diners in my party thought that, but they're not writing this review, are they? So: not too salty). COVID precautions are set up well with separate doors for order and pickup and an infinite concrete sidewalk with acres of parking lot to while away the minutes while they cook up the order (unless you order in advance). [This was written soon after CDC mask guidance changed, but I'll put it here in case that was premature].
google avatar

Erick G.

Yelp
This sht trash , ordered yellow chicken and some curry, and shrimp rise no flavor whatsoever really upset not coming here again.
google avatar

Teira R.

Yelp
Never understood the hype of this place til I tried them Cho Chos.... I went back the next day and not only got, but ATE 6 AND some Boneless chicken and whewwwww.... Take all my money for them Cho Chos! Now I only gave 4 stars because the Kung Bo chicken was not flavorful. The shrimp fried rice (of course with added duck sauce) was superb. But all imma say is, if it's your first time here GET THE CHO CHOS!
google avatar

Donnie C.

Yelp
Portions are huge and food is consistently good! Dine in service just resumed, but their take out service had a longer line.

Jade H.

Yelp
The food used to be very good a few years ago but it kinda fell off. The service is and has always been decent. There isn't really anything special about the atmosphere of the place.

Richard C.

Yelp
Very DISAPPOINTED in the Fried Rice today !! Usually it's Very Good, but today it was mushy, no Flavor, and hardly anything in it. Did they change Owners ?? DISAPPOINTED !!!
google avatar

Terra W.

Yelp
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant when I go home to Louisiana on the Westbank. Everything is delicious especially those Cho-cho's.

Carlos G.

Yelp
Food was not visually appealing nor was the description. Staff was rude and unhelpful.

Yelp
This is one of the oldest most established Chinese restaurants in New Orleans area, and I have been a customer for many years. I cannot say much about the location, ambiance or other qualities because it is mostly take-out. I have been craving for their boneless fried chicken dinner with shrimp fried rice, vegetables and a side of egg roll. I could find a delivery service to order. So, I drove there to pick the food. I played clever to get my food in between meal times and ordered the food over the phone around 3:30 pm. I understood why the delivery services did not deliver from China Doll because there were about ten people ahead of me waiting for their pick up orders. They say that one can judge the food from the restaurant's parking lot. It is true. Busier the restaurant better the food. Of course my chicken just hit the spot and their portions are very generous for two additional meals. That chicken strip makes one heck of a chicken taco with Vietnamese pickles, kind of cross between a taco an Banh mi.

Brian B.

Yelp
Food so awesome as always staff is very friendly and quick we love the combination tray and the lomelome the chicken is great to
google avatar

Omegia F.

Yelp
Not what it use to be. I went to china doll Friday 11/18/22 for a simple meal.. shrimp fried rice and chowchow. The homemade duck sauce is extremely watery. It has no taste or flavor, the shrimp fried rice has so few shrimp. I threw half of the rice container away. The chowchow just doesn't taste good anymore. What a waste of $20 bucks..

Oliva B.

Yelp
Very unprofessional they tell you what you can order and when you can order it when your paying money for food i have a onion allergy and they would not allow me to not have onions in my food super ghetto

Ryan S.

Yelp
This place does not smell good. It has a very foul odor coming from it. Which I can't believe they serve food out of that building. The food was ok... but I couldn't eat until I left. Then I was unmotivated to eat after thinking about smell of the facility the food came from.
google avatar

Tony S.

Yelp
I didn't know that they don't substitute/upgrade items on your plate I was willing to pay extra for some extra green onion on my rice I couldn't then I asked can I upgrade my rice and couldn't. I ordered a mandarin chicken plate and when I started to eat it I noticed that the gravy wasn't like gravy it was watery it wasn't the norm the whole experience was messed up.
google avatar

William G.

Yelp
Best place on the West Bank to get Chinese food Try to boneless chicken chili then of course lo mein is greaterBoneless Fried ChickenBeef and BroccoliCantonese Crab Corn Soup is awesome Yep yes yes
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
China Doll serves some really large sized portions on their lunch specials so you get good value for your money here. The ambiance is old school Chinese restaurant in a strip mall with attentive service. The food in addition to being abundant is also rather tasty as well. They do a large carry out business so you often need to walk past a lot of folks standing in the front waiting for their orders to get to the hostess for seating. Overall this is a decent spot for some good and fast Chinese food on the Westbank at a decent price.

James L.

Yelp
It was ok, not as good as it was years ago but still good and way better than the latest version of Empress of China is
google avatar

Janine M.

Yelp
I stopped by China Doll with my family the day before Thanksgiving. I went in to order take out. The ordering process was easy, just approach the bar where there are several people there to take your order. We waited a reasonable amount of time, got our food and left. The food was still hot when we got home, across the river and everything was there, in abundance. We got some vegetable dish that was pretty good, shrimp fried rice, chicken fried rice, Cho chos, and Lomi Lomi. Everything was great. The shrimp fried rice was a little spicy though but it was still good. I've been here a few times in the past and I'm always pleased. There was always plenty of food left to take home This was the first time I took food to go.
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
I love their Cho Chos!!! By far the best. I love there all their food. I haven't been in years and I heard there are new owners. I hope the food is just as good. I once drove from the Northshore in pouring down cold rain just to get cho chos lol. The food is just great from what I remember. I never had anything bad there. I am hoping to make a trip over there soon! It's been way to long since I have been back there to eat.

Yelp
For many years China Doll has been one of my favorite restaurants. I am in my 50s and I have been a China Doll customer since I was a teenager. It was always consistently very good on every level. I recently ate there and I have to say that the food was just ok. It was approximately 2pm, during lunch service so the restaurant had a lot of customers at the time. The egg rolls had a very bitter taste and it was almost inedible. The frozen egg rolls you buy in a grocery store actually taste better. My entree of moo goo gai pan was very bland, no seasoning and it didn't taste like anything. China Doll used to have the best moo goo gai pan. I was given a half serving of shrimp fried rice. It was nowhere near the usual serving. Other guests at my table had almost twice the serving of rice on their plates. Even the sweet and sour sauce isn't good like it used to be, it was more like the packets of duck sauce that you receive with an order to go. Service was slow at first but it improved during our meal time, so no complaints about that. Overall I was disappointed with China Doll. Sadly I am in no hurry to go back anytime soon.

Yelp
We were on the Westbank this past Saturday and decided to go here for lunch. They are a small place tucked away in a shopping center. Parking was very packed - as was the restaurant. We walked in and the bar was over run with people picking up take out orders. The lighting was very dim in the whole place, so we had to make our way to the back where you wait for them to seat you. (They had only been open for 30 minutes, but they were already super busy with customers everywhere.) We were eventually seated after waiting near 5 minutes for someone to acknowledge us. Our server was a nice lady and she explained some of the menu options to us. The portions were incredibly huge. I ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan lunch special. It came with Shrimp Fried Rice and choice of Egg Roll or Cho Cho. (I got the Egg Roll which was also very over-sized.) I had enough leftovers for 2 more meals! We all enjoyed what we ordered. It was very tasty. Our friend got the Mandarin Chicken. They pan fry theirs. The serving was massive. It looked to be enough Chicken for 4 people to eat. I thought my boyfriend's Shrimp Lo Mein was the best of what we all ordered. It's definitely a popular place. If I were in the area craving Chinese, I would go back again.
google avatar

King K.

Yelp
This place has always been a staple now it's barely a thumbtack. Customer Service is still the same but the food is horrible. I don't know if Hurricane Ida was the "end all be all" but ever since then it hasn't even been worth the long wait or the extra duck sauce. If you're looking for Chinese food please think twice before going here. It breaks my heart to leave this review but it has to be done after I wasted $46 yesterday. This is not the place to go.
google avatar

Pam B.

Yelp
Consistently good everyday Chinese. Excellent egg rolls! Try the Lomi Lomi! Been going here for years
google avatar

Jaha W.

Yelp
Food was absolutely terrible!! I don't know what happened since Covid but the food was very nasty. The chicken was fatty and greasy and COLD! I had placed five orders and all 5 orders were terrible! Plus they had my order wrong, and then wanted to rush me out.I would not even feed that meat to my dogs !! Awful food and will not be back.
google avatar

Tammy N.

Yelp
China Doll is my favorite american-chinese restaurant on the Westbank! Their lunch prices are really affordable especially for the portion that you get. Their fried rice is so good and the quality is levels above of what you get at other chinese places. It is filled with huge shrimps and bean sprouts. Their crab rangoons and cho cho's are to die for. Their general tso's is probably my favorite. The bright red color kinda scared me at first but the chicken is so deliciously crispy and the sauce is so addicting. It has actual pineapple chunks in it! China Doll never misses for a good lunch deal.
google avatar

Yelp
Food fresh always. Great service but be prepared to wait. Currently only doing take out and you may have to call a few times but worth it.
