Food/Taste/Flavor: 3/5 - #14 combination of Pork fried rice, Beef chow mein, and sliced Bar-B-Q Pork. #18 combination of Pork fried rice, Pork chow mein, and Garlic Chicken. The portions are giant! The chow mein is not very good since it's only flavored with soy sauce and the bean sprouts don't feel cooked all the way down. The fried rice is surprisingly good but a bit on the oily side. The Bar-B-Q Pork was a bit dry and good use more sauce or flavoring but the garlic chicken was great! Service: 5/5 - quick service. Ambiance: n/a - ordered food to go. Value for price: 5/5 - food is okay but the pricing is great for the amount of food we got!

I ordered over the phone for Pickup: Beef Vegetable Stir Fry and Chicken Fried Rice. Tasted good just as I expected. Only thing I don't like is the typical chinese restaurant puffy beef meat. Their chicken meat is not puffy, so it tasted better. If you cannot eat oyster sauce (e.g. due to allergies to crustaceans), make sure you tell them so and to substitute oyster sauce with soy sauce for the fried rice and substitute brown sauce with white sauce for the stir frys. That's what I did, and the nice lady who took my order made sure the food was done to my request. Pricing is good.

I absolutely love going here. The amount of food you get for the price is like a steal and it tastes so good. I am always getting comments that the food smells so good from my coworkers. The lady at the counter is so nice. She always calls me when my food is done. Today I got lost due to google maps taking me the wrong way and when I called she gave me directions and was very adamant about finding me to give me my food. I don’t even get leftovers because my daughter finishes it off when I get home. Favorite food to get for lunch.

Google
Overall this was a really great place. The food was very good and I really recommend the Kung Pao chicken. The combination plates are very well priced at $8.99 for most if not all that I remember. The foil chicken was most and flavorful. The place itself is small and could get crowded if it got busy but it was empty. It was pretty clean overall. You have to order at the register then they bring the food to you. Menu was well organized. Would like to come back to try more

Google
I recently visited this restaurant expecting authentic Chinese cuisine, but unfortunately, the food fell short. The dishes lacked flavor and didn't live up to my expectations. Additionally, the service was lacking – no complimentary soup or even free water! They even charged for bottled water. If you're craving real Chinese food, I'd recommend exploring other options

Google
I'm really disappointed with how there's no flavor, it's soggy, it taste like 4 day old orange chicken, and the breading on it is black...... this is the last time I go here. $15 for soggy old orange chicken?

Google
Service is teenagers, they were nice but immature. I had so much salt in my broccoli and beef it was crazy. Did not even finish the other plate we ordered which was garlic chicken. It was mostly bread with a little bit of chicken. It was really salty as well. The chow mein tasted like ramen noodles with a little bit of veggies in it. Fried rice was terrible as well. Good thing it is cheep, would not recommend this restaurant to anybody.

Google
Been eating here basically my whole life (almost 40 years) and it's always been a favorite. That hasn't changed. Unfortunately what has changed is not only the prices but the portions. I understand we're all dealing with inflation. But the same exact orders I've been getting for many years have not only doubled (or more) in price - they've shrunk in size significantly. By at least a 3rd of what it was just a couple years ago. Wouldn't mind the price increase as much if we got a fair amount of food in return. I'll continue to support the restaurant because I do love the food. We just won't be ordering it as often and we'll have to cut some of our long time favorites from our orders. 5 star food with a 2 star reduction for cost per food amount

Yelp
The last time we were there it was better good and they gave a big portion of food and it was great service, the pork chow mein was very good and the broccoli beef was real good

Yelp
Honestly the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I got chow main, orange chicken, kung pow chicken & springs rolls. Chow main- bland and cold and tasted old. Orange chicken- also cold and also not fully cooked tasted the batter still. Kung Pow- just cold only had some flavor due to asking for it to be spicy Springs Rolls- Cold Mushy & also very bland. 37$ what a waist! Just threw the food away.

Yelp
The food isn't bad. The service is great. The ambiance is good. They do have A/C when it was a very hot day.

Yelp
Food was good like always. Doordashed it so all I can tell you how good it tasted. Portions were good size

Yelp
This usto be my favorite go to for Chinese food. I ordered yesterday and the food tasted of old oil. My rice was hard and my pot stickers tasted like old oil. Gross don't waste your money

Natalie A.

Yelp
Haven't ate here in a few years. Use to be my go to until I moved away. Come back to try a plate and it has gone down hill. Their chowmien use to be thick savory noodles. Now it's like thin spaghetti noodles with zero flavor and dry. Plate was lacking flavor. Their prawns are different and not worth the price. Will not be returning.

Yelp
I've had some bad Chinese food in my life, but this is the absolute worst. The fried rice looked like it was cooked a week ago. The other dishes were plain, salty, and otherwise tasteless. I had the feeling the kitchen was out of food and had nothing but cabbage and soy sauce. Mine was a takeout order, but I once went inside the restaurant. It is depressing. I ordered the takeout because it was the only place nearby that was open on a holiday. I should have gone to the supermarket and bought a frozen dinner. I'm not trying to be mean or cruel, but I really think the owners of this place should do everyone a favor and get out of the restaurant business. There are lots of other ways to make a living. This food is so bad that charging money for it is downright unethical.

Tomas L.

Yelp
the lady working the register was very nice and the food was served hot and fast, i am going to eat here again

Yelp
So it hurts me to leave this review because I grew up on this restaurant. I have not been here in a long while and I was dying to eat here. However this place must have changed ownership because the food was not the same. I knew it changed when I verified the chicken in foil came without green onions which it used to. Now it comes with green onions. I ordered the 13. My dad ordered his meal and some bbq pork. The bbq pork was no good. It was soaking in juice. Yuck. As for my meal, the rice was not good at all. I used to love their rice. I would come here just for the rice. I'm sorry but I probably wouldn't return.

Yelp
We last ordered from China Gourmet a few years ago. It was fine then. So ordered today. The worst use of $60 we've ever spent. Sweet and sour pork, and oranges chicken were flavorless and lacking the right texture. Virtually no sauce on them. The egg foo young was heavy and flat. The substance was thick and heavy. The fried rice was dry. The broccoli beef sauce was over-thickened. Where most Chinese food digests quickly and you're hungry after a few hours, everyone in our family was bloated still 5 hours later. Horrible experience. They really don't deserve even one star.

Yelp
The people who took our order were nice but unfortunately the food was not very good in my opinion. We ordered the #18 Garlic chicken combos; a lot of the chicken pieces were very chewy, the rice tasted hard, looked like it was old and also had quite an obvious "refrigerator" taste.

Marci S.

Yelp
Do not eat here!! Horrible food bad service. We got food for dinner got it home was all stick together like warmed up in microwave disgusting! Took all the food back to the restaurant they refused to refund our money. They laughed terrible people!!

Yelp
Never again will I order from this place. Phoned an order at 430 pm. Ordered 2 salt and pepper chicken wings ( 8 pieces an order ) for $9.99 a set. As well as just pork fried rice. I got there at 501 pm and paid with a credit card. The asian lady who works the counter and the phone tries to juggle answering the phone and taking In person orders. It was 520 pm ( almost 50 mins from my call) and my order wasn't done yet. Not sure how long it takes to fry chicken but the time I waited sitting in a room full of peeps, some not even wearing a mask (even though the window has a sign that face mask was needed to enter) Many orders were piling up on the side and she wasn't even checking to see what's going on with my order and neglecting my eye to eye contact. It got to the point that I had to ask "is my order ready" before she took another in person order. When the food finally arrived, she didn't apologize and didn't even hand me the food which I had to pick up on the table. Waiting an hour for my order and seeing others get theirs who ordered after me was a turn off.

Joseph M.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite Chinese takeout go here at least once a week love their soups they're hot and sour and more wonton and a regular wonton. Also, they're sweet-and-sour pork and vegetable chop Suey, but all their food is good that I've eaten there. Been going there for 20 years.

Jessica V.

Yelp
I ordered the family for 4, orange chicken & pot stickers. The food had no flavor. Everything stuck together. When I took the food out of the boxes, it was all stuck together like as if I pulled it out of the refrigerator and reheated the food in the microwave. My family and I didn't even finish anything, and absolute waste of $70+.

Ernesa R.

Yelp
Good service. 1 star only . I stopped in for lunch today. The food sucked. The chow main had no flavor. The pork fried rice had no flavor. The sweet n sour pork was tough . Zero stars for the food.

Yelp
I ordered this on Door Dash. Noodles and egg rolls. The noodles came in a take out container that makes it so fun to eat directly out of. Everything was so fresh and tasty!
google avatar

Steve U.

Yelp
I ordered egg rolls to go and daaamn hella grease dripped out on my first egg roll bite. i threw the whole bag away after that 1 bite NEVER AGAIN and the place had a weird smell when i walked in glad i didnt order a plate

Yelp
Best Chinese food I've had in a while! I got the sweet and sour chicken plate with pot stickers. Everything was great but the pot stickers are the BEST

Fred F.

Yelp
We brought home some of usual favorites and were very pleased with the quality of the food and the quantity of the food. The sweet and sour pork was delicious, the lemon chicken was great, pork fried rice was good and so was the combination chow mien. The meal was ready as promised. I am planning to go back when we order Chinese food again. It's the best that we have found in town

Wanh D.

Yelp
First time & last time! I only came here because China garden was closed today. But this was nasty!Beef with Broccoli Was so salty. Chow mein was so dry and No flavor! The fried rice was Ok. What a disappointment! I should have gone to panda instead.

Yelp
Cheap, fast and GOOD. I usually find that hole in the wall places that have been around for YEARS, are doing something right..right? Decided on a whim to try this spot. I go to the gym in the same parking lot and, knew I had to either make dinner after my workout (bleh) or just go ahead and pick something up (yay!) I always see, people coming in and out and my teenagers, had actually asked for Filipino food for dinner. Again..I REALLY didn't feel like cooking...so, why not some Chinese food!? Went in, saw that it had some indoor dining, but clearly more folks do the "call in order" for this spot. The woman at the counter greeted me and nodded towards the menus in a cardboard box. Took one and glanced over it. Decent pricing, and lots of options for thier combination plates, which I was happy that they served all day long. I've found that more places around riverbank/Modesto only have combo plates for lunch hour. I ordered two separate combo plates. Both with pork fried rice and pork chow mien. Protein for both was 4 pieces in each combo plate of fried chicken (hefty sizes of drumettes and wings) chicken was crispy, not dry and had good flavor. Rice was also tasty, as well as the chowmein which I was pleasantly surprised was not the typical thick chowmein noodles! YAY! All in all. Kids were happy, enjoyed it. And I didn't have to cook! Will for sure be back to try other combinations plates, and other menu items. Oh and my bad for not getting any pictures. My kids snagged, the plates, and devoured. Oh well ;-)

Jesse M.

Yelp
The previous reviews had me skeptical but so glad I tried it anyways!! This is place is bomb. The Mongolian beef is exactly how I like it! Not just hella onion and bell peppers like other joints. Perfect. The Prawns were big and crispy with amazing flavor and the orange chicken was really good too. I'll def be back to this place!!! Best Chinese fast food I've had in Modesto.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Yummy! Went here for lunch when I forgot to make one... maybe I should forget more often! I got the lunch special number four I think pork fried rice, pork chow mien, and something else delicious! It was fast hot and just perfect honestly seriously very impressed!

Felipe T.

Yelp
Chow mein was tasteless. Garlic chicken was salty. I ordered a combo and asked to upgrade to beef chow mein and shrimp fried rice, was an almost a $5 upgrade. Ordered two combos and potstickers. Total was $42 and threw away about $35 worth of food. Will never go back
google avatar

Eilonwy W.

Yelp
Huge portions, served piping hot, by nice staff, so it's too bad that it's not better. I've never before encountered egg foo yung with this spongy texture. Pork chow mein was noodles, sliced meat, and salt. It was so bad that describing it accurately feels spiteful. But it's the second worst Chinese I've ever had, taking that crown from a hole in the wall in Wyoming circa 1988.

Clarice L.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed!! Just picked up dinner for two at 5pm. Just returned all of the food at 5:30pm. It wasn't fit to eat. What a sad meal they threw together. Everything from the shrimp, chow mien, fried rice, chicken, prawns, & lets not forget the Sweet & Sour pork. None of it was fit to feed a dog. Took it back, they argued with me that it's the same. I didn't even ask for my $$ back, and of course they didn't offer it back. I've been to China Gourmet for years, but no more!!!
google avatar

Yelp
The tiny gem found in a hole in the wall. The food is amazing- so flavorful and abundant and the staff is so sweet.
google avatar

Melody H.

Yelp
I was soo impressed with their food. It was done to perfection. Tasted were spot on. Our favorites are usually orange chicken meal, walnut shrimp, chicken in foil and egg rolls. It's a small place but have been happy with their food for years now.
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
Very disappointed, I didn't know that there were new owners. Everything I ordered was a disaster. Tried the fried squid ,it was raw . Bread on the dipped squid uncooked. Fried rice , egg foo young and chow mien not good . I've been going to this place for many years. Unfortunately haven't been here in the last year. Won't be back !!!

Yelp
Flooded with teriyaki sauce to salty never again, ordered take out please get better with separating the food entrees
google avatar

Lynn M.

Yelp
For the past 20 years I have purchased food from China Gourmet. Last night was the last time I will ever buy anything there again! The quality of the food has gone done completely! The special chowmein was cold and was basically spaghetti noodles with 2 pieces of beef, 2 pieces of shrimp, 2 little slivers of pork and 2 pieces of chicken! It was bland with no flavor at all! The orange chicken was also terrible they added tons of chopped garlic and the changes the recipe for the batter and it hardly had any orange sauce. You had a bitter taste in your mouth with every bite. Don't waste your time going to China Gourmet, I surely won't!

Sophia P.

Yelp
Been hard to find a good Chinese restaurant in this area that taste authentic and this is now my go to! Def recommend!!

Elena T.

Yelp
Complete disappointment... My son & I each ordered a combination plate: pork fried rice / pork chow mien & teriyaki chicken skewers / BBQ sliced pork. We also ordered the fantail prawns. It was difficult to find the pork in the fried rice & chow mien, both of which had no seasoning or flavor. I had to splash quite a bit of soy sauce on my fried rice in an attempt for flavor. I did find three good-sized strips of beef, cold & flavorless (I spit it out), in my "pork" chow mien. My son's chow mien was so slick with oil. It was pooling in the container. My chow mien was so dry I needed water to choke it down. We ended up combining our chow mien in a big salad bowl, mixed & replated. That took care of the slick & dry issues, but not the lack of flavor & pork. We didn't taste a lot of teriyaki in the teriyaki chicken skewers. I tasted soy sauce & a hell of a lot of salt! This was the only thing that was seasoned, even if it was badly. I thought I would cut up the BBQ pork slices to add flavor to my rice & chow mien. You can't add flavor to something when the addition has no flavor, either! And, dry! Oh, so very dry! I tried to swallow a few pieces by dipping them in the sweet & sour sauce that came with the prawns. There wouldn't be nearly enough sweet & sour sauce in the little container to choke that down, & I still wanted to dip my prawns. I ate two flat prawns. I ate the second one because I was still really hungry. But after that, I couldn't do it anymore. I even tried telling myself, "It's just sustenance." That container is now in the garbage & I'm making myself a pb&j.

Charles T.

Yelp
Yep~ I've read a change of owners. And cooks too I guess. This was such a great place, best Chinese Food around, now after the last 2 times, it was awful not awful, just bad!

Yelp
I've been ordering food to go from this restaurant for several years. On average my orders are around $65.00. I order extra food so I can have left overs and not have to cook. Tonight when I entered the restaurant, the lady that was behind the counter was rushing me, yelling next next I can help you here. I told her that I wasn't ready and that I wanted to look over the menu without being rushed. She looked at me and said what would you like to order and I told her again that I needed time to look over the menu I didn't want to be rushed. As I started to order, she kept telling me what next, what next,? She asked me how many people were goong to be eating, I told her 3. She then became angry and yelled at me, telling me that's too much food, no more food. I wanted to order two other dishes and she actually refused to allow me to order anything else! Customers around me were just as shocked as I was; Another employee actually apologized to me! I showed tr he employees that i had sufficient cash to pay for whatever I ordered, yet I was still denied. They have lost my business, never again will I come here!!!

Danielle M.

Yelp
Sorry this is really bad tasting Chinese food the flavors almost made me nauseous lol :( when the chowmein, rice, and orange chicken are all bad.. you know there's not much hope for anything else
google avatar

Sara R.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars I would. Ordered 2 broccoli beef plates, egg rolls and a garlic chicken. Chow mein was basically thick top ramen noodles with veggies and few pieces of bland meat, and broccoli beef and garlic chicken was so salty it was inedible. The egg rolls were super soggy and bland. Called them to ask what could be done about the inedible food and they told me no one has ever complained and that is how they cook. They said I could bring it back and remake it with no salt since we clearly can't handle seasoning. More importantly the person I spoke with hung up on me the first time when I said I wanted to speak with the manager and when I called back they were rude and snippy. Had they at least apologized and not been rude I wouldn't have bothered leaving them a bad review. I can't imagine we are the only ones who have complained based on the reviews either (which I wish I would have read before we decided to go here).

Michelle M.

Yelp
Very disappointing don't waste your time or money here which is sad for me to say because this used to be my go to spot. A few years ago I noticed the quality started going down so I would only order their potstickers (since they're my favorite) and get the rest of my food somewhere else. I decided to give them another try and everything I got had no flavor and I couldn't even finish. This place should be embarrassed selling this food, at their quality it should be free.

Jackie F.

Yelp
Used to be so good. New owners...you need to step it up...orange chicken and chow mein no flavor...this place use to be so good. 2 stars because the people are very nice.
google avatar

Rob G.

Yelp
Inside is a dive, but for what it lacks in charm they make up for in quantity, in the portion sizes, and in price. You get so much for your money here. An individual dinner will easily get you dinner and lunch tomorrow. The family meals are awesome and you get a lot for your $65(family meal for 6 last time we went). Quick turn around on orders and everything is still hot when you bring it home.
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
Terrible. My very first time as well. Took my Mom and niece. The guy that was taking my order was so rude and to top it off, he couldn't even understand what we we're ordering.

Kalen W.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese place in the entire town! I have never had a bad meal here. Prices are fair, food is great! Nothing they cook is sub-par. Highly recommended!

Yelp
About a month or two ago I ordered take-out for my family, but China Gourmet forgot to include the house fried rice that I paid for with my order. The old lady that handles the register assured me that I would be credited for this mistake next time I visited with them & it would be affiliated with my phone # record. Well, today I went there for a couple of items and decided to collect on that credit since they owed me fair & square. The same old lady at the register tried to tell me some bogus story that the restaurant is under new ownership now so they cannot hold up that deal. I looked at the business license and it is the same old one as before. Either she lied to a long time loyal customer to get out of a $10 reimbursement, or something even more shady and illegal is going on. This place needs to be audited, so I think I'll start by calling business licensing, BBB, & the health inspector. This set off some red flags for me, so I think the digging is worth it at this point. Hopefully when they get inspected, that old lady will finally take off the latex gloves with holes in them that she probably never changes all day long. Hygiene and safe food practices takes extensive training, I know from experience, but I think this place lacks the trainings and the professionalism to run a food business.... I would also appreciate my money back now . Whether it's a penny or a dollar, what's right is right.
google avatar

DeeAnne T.

Yelp
Worst food ever tonight, called to resolve and got no where. Dry, boring and might as well flushed my 26.30 down the toilet. Left phone number for owner to call me tomorrow. Will not order again. Lost my business.

J M.

Yelp
This was our favorite Chinese restaurant hands down for over 30 years. But something changed several months ago. But we still gave it a chance. But no more. Dishes like garlic chicken, orange chicken, sweet sour pork or chicken are very very dry and almost chewy or spongy. And looks and tastes like something that was shipped frozen and they just warm up. Chicken in foil is usually over cooked or burnt now. The fantail shrimp is completely changed and looks and tastes like it also comes pre made frozen. New owners have ruined this once great restaurant. So don't waste your time or money! Byeeeeeee

Yelp
Very generous with portion size. Food is tasty. Service is excellent. My picky 3 year old approves
