The Best Restaurants for Takeout and Delivery in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"China Orchid in the Riverbend neighborhood has been around for more than 25 years, first opened by the mother of Joe Ming, proprietor of Ming’s in Lakeview. Ming’s mother, Susan, taught him how to cook Chinese food in the kitchen of the family-owned Uptown restaurant, which changed hands in 1992. It’s still a neighborhood go-to for Chinese takeout, with an extensive menu and third-party delivery available." - Clair Lorell

This was a wonderful spot to stop for a quick meal. I got the orange chicken combo. It was fantastic. Personally, I would have preferred less sauce, but that's splitting hairs, and probably not universal. The server was on her game, and a delight to deal with. She never let my drink go empty. The sweet tea was actually sweet, like a Southern granny made it. The seating has plenty of options, so it doesn't matter if everyone wants a booth or a chair, or if your party is split, everyone can be accommodated. Also, the rest of the diners were well mannered. There wasn't a single blaring phone or inappropriately loud conversation. It was a very pleasant environment that was beautifully decorated. Additionally: Another person posted in their review that this place only has 4 free parking spaces, otherwise, you have to pay to park. This is incorrect. They have 4 reserved spaces. Otherwise, you have to park amongst the other visitors to the shopping center, who may be going to the bank, ice cream parlor, etc. The parking kiosk in their picture is for parking on the street, which is mostly for visitors to other businesses neighboring this shopping center, because many of them don't have designated parking.

I placed an order of shrimp lo mein, shrimp + chicken lo mein, fried rice, sesame chicken and crab wontons. The food was extremely dry, warm but dry. Almost as if it’s been sitting there for a while. I called to possibly get half a refund back and the receptionist went on to say that I was 40 minutes late picking up my order, that’s why it was dry. I placed the order at 3:00 it took me 10 minutes to get there and 10 minutes to get back to my location. There’s NO way the food would’ve been that dry. She then goes on to say that the manager said there’s nothing they can do about it. I understand to a certain extent. Yes, I should’ve checked the food before leaving but who checks Chinese food? It’s ALWAYS good! Maybe if you dine in, it would be okay but I do NOT recommend calling for takeout. I’m not sure if our food was old or what but it was extremely dry!!

This is a wonderful place to come eat. You want to try Asian Cuisine than this place is for you. They have great seating , and a Bar. We were greeted right away. And we were allowed to pick were we wanted to sit down. The wait staff were very friendly and service was very fast. The food was hot and super tasty. We had the sampler platter for 2. Also fried pot stickers. It was enough for for 3 to have a light lunch. But the menu looked so good I almost ordered a bigger plate. We were visiting from Texas for our son goes to college here. We will definitely come back. Also when you come here it is limited parking. China orchid has some spots for there restaurant you don't have to pay. But if you are parking any 9thet place you will need to pay at kiosk by the street. It's min 30 mins for $1.40 and for 1hr 20 mins it was $2.30 . Not bad for parking.

Google
Under new ownership, but the food was delicious. The service was good, too. Due to my work I can't get in this area of town that often, but I will make more effort because I enjoyed it that much.

Google
If you're looking for great Chinese food at a reasonable price you'll love this place. Some friends and I ate here today and love it. I read all the reviews and I'm pleased to say IT'S ALL TRUE!!! We had Susan as our server and she exuded excellent service. Her drinks were made to perfection and served along with a perfect smile. The food was perfect and we can't repeat that enough. The location true is in a strip mall, but it's a very nice and comfy place. Here are some pics of the food we ordered and I hope this review sends more natives or visitors to this location. 1. General Tso's Chicken with shrimp fried rice and egg roll... 2. Seafood Hot Pot... 3. Grilled Shrimp...

Google
Love this restaurant! The portion sizes are large for the price, which is amazing! Great service as well. Vibe is always chill and relaxed and they play nice music.

Google
I was craving some cheap and fast Chinese takeout, and this place did the job. The orange chicken and crab rangoon were delicious.

Google
Hands down best fried chicken in town, consistently good and delicious 😋 And their ribs are bussin.

Yelp
I've eaten here for many years and it's one of the better Chinese options Uptown. Before Katrina I ate here very often but I rarely end up eating here anymore as there are so many new Vietnamese places that have opened nearer my house that I end up at those more often. They have a decent selection of Asian items beyond just the expected Americanized Chinese offerings. I used to enjoy the Singapore Noodles here but my last several times of ordering that dish it just hasn't been as good as it used to be. Overall the prices are decent for the quantity you get and the service is generally adequate. My video review of China Orchid Restaurant is here: https://youtu.be/GG_FDwlX8wY

Yelp
Chicken in my entree had been cooked at least twice before I ordered it. Not to mention that I found a hair sticking out of the crust. What are they doing in the kitchen?

Panhapech C.

Yelp
Yummy food and friendly staff. Popcorn chicken was crispy and well seasoned. 100% going to come back.
google avatar

Cecelia W.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice and gotten sick both times. On top of that the food is bland and the rice is always mushy. I don't understand how they can't get plain rice right.
google avatar

Denetra J.

Yelp
I ordered the shrimp and lobster sauce with white rice and an egg roll. Everything was hot and delicious. I found a new lunch spot.

Amita R.

Yelp
The food was delicious! The new owners really took it up a level. The inside decor is more inviting, the Shanghai Pop music playing was fun and all the customers were loving it. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
The food here is not remarkable. But if you decide to carry out from here, DO NOT place your order online! Just call the restaurant. We went online to place an order (not our first time!) for China Orchid and noticed that the online menu prices were significantly higher - $2.00 to $4.50 per item, than the paper menu price. We put our order in the cart, and realized that the total for ordering online was going to be !!! $25.00 !!! higher than the cost to call in the order. I called the restaurant to confirm that this was correct and was told yes, the online prices are higher to cover the cost of the online service. Additionally, there is a "service fee" of around $5.00 tacked onto the total for the online order. I placed my order on the phone, saving over $30 over the cost of ordering online. And this was not for a huge order. Large fried rice, 3 orders of hot and sour soup, 2 orders of pot stickers, one order of Lo Mein, 2 egg rolls and a cucumber salad. And to top it all off, they charge 3% for a credit card, or offer 3% less for cash. And the food was disappointing. This isn't the first time we've ordered from them, but while the food was pretty good the first time, it hasn't been all that great since. I'll be finding a new place for Chinese carryout!

Yelp
Im giving 1 star because they did not honor the advertisement and coupons they put out. Gave me a 10% discount on a meal that was advertised as "free". 1st and last time going.

Julie B.

Yelp
First time and we were very pleased with the food and the service. Very fresh and tasty. We ordered three dishes and all of them were excellent. Very friendly and tentative staff. Clean atmosphere. Definitely going back!

Yelp
Eating in or eating out, great food, great service! Been going there for 20 years. Love the lo mein.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my lunch at China Orchid yesterday. They serve solid, traditional Chinese food at very reasonable prices. I had a cup of egg drop soup and their broccoli chicken with a side of brown rice and an egg roll. I was happy with both dishes. The flavors were great and the ingredients seemed to be of very good quality. The service was excellent too.

Nancy F.

Yelp
Affordable menu. Well prepared foods. Good variety. Went for dinner. Plenty of tables available.

Yelp
CRAB RANGOON: for this dish alone they deserve 4 stars. I have never seen wedges this big: 6" long, and stuffed to the edges with filling (SEE PIC). And just like good french fries they are crispy on the outside but gooey creamy on the inside. 6 wedges, easily a single meal - $9.

Yelp
My coworkers convinced me to order from this place the other night. Absolutely disgusting food!! Blane no flavor, the veggies were hard, my tofu was dark hard disgusting. Tasted like it was old and they just refried it. I will never order from here again.

Teri J.

Yelp
I'm befuddled about the 3 stars given. My husband and I ate here last Friday night. I realize they are under new ownership and read the reviews so I wasn't sure what to expect, but we decided to give the new China Orchid a try. I am so very happy we did! We frequented this restaurant for the past few years and while not blown away, the food was acceptable. Not anymore. We had a wonderful dinner including my drink! My husband had the vegetable soup which was full of fresh vegetables and had great flavor. I ordered the combination egg foo young. In the past (under the old owners), the egg foo young always seemed to have an added fuller (flour maybe) and the gravy always had a lot of grease floating on top. This time, the dish was what I've always been accustomed. Having originally come from a city with a Chinatown, I expected more and this time, it was near perfection. I wish I remembered the name of the drink I had, but it was garnished with lychee and packed a nice punch. We also had spring rolls which were delicious. The rice was perfect and was grain for grain. The best part of our visit was meeting the owner/staff (Phoebe and Sophie) who took the time to come to our table to make certain we were pleased with our meal (which we were). They are actually Chinese which was refreshing as many "Chinese " restaurants in New Orleans are actually owned by Vietnamese which is not to take anything away from these places, but I was pleasantly surprised. I know we will be making many more visits to this establishment in the future compared to the past as the "new" China Orchid exceeded our expectation!

Yelp
Enjoying Szechuan shrimp at China Orchid. Wonderful large fresh shrimp and large variety of accompanying vegetables. Delicious. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Good food here!! Not excellent.. but good I want to say great, but. No. I might stop by again,

Marylyn A.

Yelp
The pepper steak meat was mushy, fried rice just plain. The rice didn't have any ingredients, bland. Lo Mein was awful. Will never go back unfortunately.

Kurt W.

Yelp
An unexpected wow. Great food service and atmosphere. I met a friend in the area to talk business . we arrived before the dinner crowd. We ordered each a bowl of soup and some egg rolls as appetizers . My associate had the Hot sour soap . I had the wanton. Before my soup arrived I saw one of the ladies at a table making the wontons from scratch. I admired her technique. She convinced me to order two different types of dumplings she made from scratch as well. All was top notch. I never write reviews . These people deserve credit for an excellent meal . Yelp
You want cheap, reliable Chinese? You got it. (I've only ever gotten takeout so I can't speak to the dine in experience, but I'm sure it is fine.) The crab Rangoons are your typical size/shape (6 for $8) but come with this SPICY mustard that really changes the game.

Louise E.

Yelp
This is my second bad experience-- I chalked the first to them having a bad day. The food is absolutely disgusting. I used to like this place. The orange peel beef we just got was just mush with crunchy/burned parts. The fried rice tasted sour. I like supporting businesses in my neighborhood but I will be ordering from another. No more China Orchid for my family. I can't get over how bad tonight's dinner was.

Yelp
Such delicious food for such a delicious price and the portions are huge. Service was exquisite I love the staff there. Ambiance is nice as well, it's mildly dimmed in there with calm music and it's quiet and intimate in there.

Yelp
My Supervisor ordered lunch for everyone from China Orchid restaurant. I have never eaten at this restaurant so I looked up the menu online. I decided to stick with my normal dish at any Chinese restaurant, which is shrimp fried rice. Once the orders arrived, I went to the cafeteria to eat. After a few bites of my shrimp fried rice, I noticed an oddly shaped bug mixed in with the rice. Immediately i stopped eating and threw the food away. I will never recommend this place to anyone and I most definitely will not be ordering from this restaurant again. I am mortified and will be reporting this incident.

Yelp
I'm on a super restrictive diet right now, so eating out is a serious challenge (ie can't have things cooked in lots of oil, high protein, high veggie, smaller/specific carbs). One night I was missing carbs and eating out and I spent about two hours on yelp going through menus and seeing if there was anything I could eat, and stumbled upon this gem! They have a healthy menu with steamed shrimp or scallops, and salad, and honestly it's a lot healthier than other Chinese restaurants in the area so my husband and I went to check it out. He got the potstickers which smelled and looked AMAZING (they fried them in a circle so there was a crispy base and it looked super cool), and he said they tasted delicious. He also got their sweet and sour chicken which is actually fried chicken cutlets sliced up, which definitely seemed classier. Sauce was also served on the side which was healthier. I got the steamed shrimp with some spices on it which came with steamed broccoli and some asparagus spears on top of a fresh green salad with a honey mustard-esque dressing on the side. Both dinners came with shrimp fried rice (but you could substitute for white or brown rice). We were also seated immediately, waitress was super attentive, and it was a cute quaint little restaurant that was perfect for a date night. Dishes range from around $10-15 but you get a lot of food that makes for amazing leftovers!
google avatar

Julia P.

Yelp
I always stick to the usual sesame chicken combo plate. It's worth nothing that the food always comes out steaming hot, and the staff is always very kind and friendly. There's a nice ambiance in the restaurant, but you get the same presentation and packed box when you order takeout as well. Definitely worth trying if you haven't before!
google avatar

Bryan H.

Yelp
We ordered through a reputable delivery service. The food arrived piping hot and looked amazing. The dishes were loaded with meats and vegetables covered in richly colored sauces. One would think from the display that they were about to enjoy a culinary delight. However, the entire meal was devoid of any flavor whatsoever. It's as if some mysterious ancient Chinese curse has plagued this establishment, allowing them to create the most visually pleasing dishes but never allowing a single soul to enjoy their deliciousness.
google avatar

Darkskin B.

Yelp
Real quiet spot uptown. Parking is terrible. All the businesses are so territorial over parking. I just park on the street. This place gives old China town vibes. I've never been but I'm guessing what old China town feels like. The service is as good as it can be. I had dumplings and wonton soup. My only complains that they use iceberg lettuce n their soup. That's cheap. Otherwise it's all good.
google avatar

Luis M.

Yelp
Good food for when are in a hurry. Their combination fried rice is quite good. Portions are good and shareable.
google avatar

Gabe R.

Yelp
I hate giving bad reviews and I know New Orleans has roaches but they should not be in the food or all over the table. Didn't write the order down so it came out wrong and shrimp was coated in a clear goopy liquid. Tried to reheat it that night and I cant even explained the state of the food after, tasted like actually puke and I had to spit it out.

Chris M.

Yelp
Perfect as usual for me. Got order correct and ready on time. Egg rolls some of the best that I had from them. Rest of the order the same. Friendly staff
google avatar

Martine H.

Yelp
I really like their Combination Lo Mein! Chicken, beef, shrimp and veggies. Yummy! The General Tso Chicken is pretty tasty, get the combo platter which comes with shrimp fried rice and an egg roll (substitute shrimp roll if don't eat pork). Even though haven't tried all of them, all combo platters are a steal!
google avatar

Uriia H.

Yelp
Ok...so...where do I even begin. Came here for lunch last week. I should have skipped it based on some of the reviews but I guess I am a glutton for punishment. My friend and I ordered and the waitress took our orders down mentally...completely forgot a part of it until we asked. They advertise 10% off if u check in on the yelp app but they won't honor it!!! She claims they don't know how to remove it. Horrible! I ordered sweet n sour chicken..was pretty dry. Rice was ok and egg roll and egg drop soup were tasty. Contact yelp to remove the 10% promo people...it's not rocket science!

Yelp
This place been here for many many years. It's a small dining area but its clean and cozy. Food is really good and service was friendly. Their lunch menu is until 3.30 PM. Plenty parking spaces. Tip: If you need to charge your phone, get the second booth table from the entrance door, there is a power outlet under the table.

Elise E.

Yelp
100% my go-to happy place. The food is always consistent and amazing, the prices fantastic, the service warm and friendly and attentive. Can't recommend this place enough
google avatar

Tracey S.

Yelp
Ordered the seafood pot. The worst, flavorless food I've ever had. Absolutely awful. So disappointed.

Terry K.

Yelp
Always great food!!! Tasty and delicious!! And always enough for the next day as well!!!

Cassia R.

Yelp
I have never been dissapointed. Great food, great variety and selection, lots of vegetarian and vegan options, and friendly service.

Yelp
So I was STARVING and I was in the neighborhood and thought, when was the last time I ate at this Chinese restaurant? Maybe the 80s? So I took the chance and ordered *all the takeout* I ordered moo shu vegetables, shrimp green beans and shrimp toast. And unlike my last disappointing take out adventure, everything was very tasty. The shrimp toast was fluffy and shrimpy. The moo shu came with the sauces and the yummy crepes. And the shrimp and green beans were delicious, easily the best dish. I ordered at the front desk and my food came out quickly. Definitely need to remember to put them in rotation.
google avatar

Rodney T.

Yelp
Last time eating here. I love the food but they play Fox News on the television. Boycott China Orchid. The waitress rudely just told us she doesn't have time to make something we wanted that was on the menu. Don't come here! Never been tested so rudely.
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Stopped into China Orchid for our annual Christmas Eve Chinese Dinner. China Orchid I found to be nothing special but thats what we have in New Orleans for Chinese food in general. I have yet to eat at a Chinese restaurant in NOLA that wows me. I ordered the hot and sour soup which was good than topped it off with the Hunan shrimp which was again good but not great.

William K.

Yelp
Such a great little friendly spot for classic Chinese cuisine in Uptown. The restaurant was quaint, service was fantastic. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Omg so I've been going to this restaurant for over 6 years. I've ordered out and had it delivered. Without any problems with anything. I went to dine in with my family of 4. It was horrible. The service lady took forever to take our order. The food took over 45 minutes to get our table. It was good. I had to ask for my soup. Now. Don't get me wrong. I can sympathize with the next person but she only had three other families there how hard can that be I know from experience it's not very hard so from my last experience on Sunday I will not be going there and neither do I recommend going there on a Sunday
google avatar

Brad G.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place until today. I've eaten here many many times over the last 9 years, and now, I don't know if I can ever go back. I got the General Tso's chicken like I always do, but this time I got a little something extra. I started to eat, then noticed something strange, and what I thought at first was a frayed chili pepper stem...Nope, a huge roach, cooked into the sauce. I couldn't believe my eyes. I'm so disgusted and doubtful that I will ever be back.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Mediocre food, rude service. I ordered online via their website system. When I arrived I waited for a few other parties to be seated and to pickup food before being attended. I said I ordered online and the guy said he has no record. He didn't go check, just wanted me to order again after I'd already waited 25 minutes from the time of my first order. I wasn't sure of the order I'd placed for a few people so I asked if he wasn't sure he got the online order. THAT'S when he finally went and checked and discovered he had not picked up my order from the system. Why offer online ordering if you can't be bothered filling the orders? The food is the same stuff you get anywhere so I'll go anywhere else. Same sugar and salt laden sauces and over fried calamari. Boring but priced right for what it is. Waitress was cool. Keep her, lose him.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
Decided to eat here tonight after I saw a Yelp coupon. They decided not to honor the coupon and said they didn't know who created the coupon. One would have to imagine only the restaurant can create the coupon, and if they didn't they should figure out how to remove it. Very bizarre and poor customer service on their part. I hate when people review restaurants on items other than the food but this is a unique instance - you cannot perpetually keep a fake coupon on Yelp and then when people are ready to pay you tell them you're not taking it. But this is not the only issue - the food , Mongolian beef was good not great. Most importantly the portion was not good - I have a before and after photo below. 80% onions 20% beef. Likely will not return after the combination of small portion and poor service.

Yelp
China orchid had some good things and then some that were just okay/not great. I have been coming here for years- this was the first time in a while though. It isn't quite as good as I recall it to be. My husband, father and I went for a Saturday evening dinner. The restaurant had about 4 other tables of diners when we got there. It took a few minutes for someone to come over, but throughout the meal our server was friendly and efficient. We started with soup (hot and sour and egg drop) and a Cho Cho appetizer. The soups were pretty good. However the Cho-Cho not so much. It looked like the dough had not been closed at the edges- so must of the filling was dry and kind of hard. One was totally empty and we told our waitress. She apologized and soon came it with 2 more- those were hot, fresh and moist. Maybe the first batch were old? Not a super pleasant thought. For our meals, my dad ordered the seafood hot pot- he raved about how full of seafood and great tasting it was. My husband got the Szechuan pork combo plate- it was more like a basic stir fry than Szechuan, but tasted decent. The rice was good, as was the egg roll. I got the orange peel beef combo plate. I have always loved their orange peel beef- and it was delicious. I would not go out if my way to return, however I would go again.

Yelp
The restaurant is within walking distance of my house, and offers everything that you would expect from a Chinese restaurant. I tend to order takeout here, but I've noticed that the folks that do always seem to have issues with the wait, the service, and the pickup. I have no problem with the food. Walking in, you're immediately greeted and asked if you want to dine in. Or, at least, I was. Apparently there had been a woman standing there before I came in, and she had been completely ignored. The hostess proceeded to take my order, but I pointed out the lady and said she was first. If I hadn't, I think the hostess would have continued to ignore the woman -- I don't know what that was all about, but it bothered me. Anyway, the food takes 15-20 minutes, and then they pack everything up for you. I had to remind the hostess to charge me for my food. The restaurant was busy, but not so busy where you forget to have folks pay for their meals. To the food itself: The won ton soup is flavorful. I enjoyed it - plenty of veggies, shrimp, and dumplings. Comforting on a cold night. The broccoli beef is pretty standard. Meat's tender, and the broccoli isn't overcooked. Pork fried rice, once aided by some soy sauce, was pretty tasty. Not greasy, and you receive a large portion. The moo shu was tasty -- hard to go wrong there. The meat and veggie mixture was uber savory, the crepes were nice and thin, and the plum sauce just made everything work together. Yum. I'll go back and try again. I'm sure the service that night could have been a fluke, and the food is worth another visit.

Yelp
If you've been trying to find good Chinese food in New Orleans, China Orchid needs to be your go-to restaurant. In fact, I'd like to give them more credit and say that the food is not only good if being compared to other NOLA's Chinese restaurants, but this restaurant serves just plain good Chinese food on any scale. And I've eaten in both Oakland and San Francisco's Chinatown. The price is decent for the combo meals, less than $10 for your entree, shrimp fried rice and an egg roll. I ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken and loved it! They serve large portions, so you'll not only be satisfied with the taste but it's also enough to fill you up. The place is nice inside and the service was good: we got asked how our food was and our waters were refilled. I'll be back!

Marvin D.

Yelp
Good, consistent quality Chinese food. We usually get their orange chicken - excellent. Have also tried their Singapore noodles - very good. The pot stickers were good and you get a lot with your order. Will continue to order from them.
