New Orleans is a food haven filled with some of the best cuisines in the world, so it's been a fairly big suprise for me the last few years when I've realized that it really doesn't have that many quality Chinese options. So when I found China Rose out in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans definitely known for having better ethnic cuisines than the city itself, I was looking forward to trying Chinese dishes better than I had ever found in the city proper. Unfortunately, that's not what I found.
Upon arriving at the establishment, I was a fan of the outside awning that had the last 7 digits of the restaurant's phone number on the side, giving the locale an appeal of a NYC hang out as opposed to some random option in the middle of a Southern suburb. Inside, the large carpeted seating areas with one or two massive TV screens on the walls, some booths here and there, and a multitude of isolated tables with four or five chairs around wasn't the most appealing, but also had a sort of genuineness that reminded me of Chinese restaurants I had in Mississippi. The menu options were diverse but not too overwhelming, a factor I appreciated, and the prices were nothing that was going to break the bank.
I ordered the Chicken Lo Mein and some Diet Coke and while the portions were massive (always a plus for me), the food simply was, surprisingly, bland. The noodles were far thinner and drier than what I was used to with Lo Mein, and even with a dousing of soy sauce, there really wasn't any flavor or spice to be found. Yes, I left full, being good for lunch and dinner, and I can say it was the best Chinese food I had so far in the New Orleans area, but that really isn't saying much. I'm determined, though, and because this city is filled to the brim with options, I'm hopeful I will find an excellent Chinese restaurant soon.
China Rose, though, wasn't it.
