Peter Chang’s Mama Chang in Fairfax Promises ‘Home-Style’ Cooking | Eater DC

"About 15 years ago, after serving as a chef for the Chinese Embassy, Peter Chang began his restaurant career cooking under an assumed name at China Star, an early stop in the path that evolved him into a noted chef." - Gabe Hiatt

Google
Always hot and fresh, it is just the husband and wife that do everything daily. The wait can be long but I promise its worth it! Highly recommend the almond chicken combo.

Adrienne S.

Google
No table seating. Carry out. Ordered shrimp egg foo young was awful! No flavor, over stuffed with I’m not sure what. Found a long thin piece of metal like a piece of wire inside. Sweet & sour shrimp, no thank you. Vegetables & white rice were vegetables & white rice. Perhaps I ordered the wrong dish but sadly I’ll never know.

Lena S.

Google
This was my first time ordering from this restaurant, which I found through a Google search. I had never been there or heard of it before, but I’ve been looking for a good Chinese restaurant since the three I used to frequent have gone downhill. Placing my order over the phone was smooth and easy. When I arrived to pick up my food, I noticed that both the exterior and interior could use some upkeep. The inside felt a bit dingy, and the kitchen area looked like it could benefit from a deep cleaning, especially under the stove. On the positive side, the staff was friendly, and the food was actually pretty decent, a bit more flavorful than what I’ve had at my previous go-to spots. Overall, it’s an okay place, but it would really shine with a little extra cleaning and care.

Ava G.

Google
The food was mediocore and a bit dry, but edible. Such big portions to last for a few days, which I appreciate, but I did find a piece of a blue rubberband in my fried rice 😬 the wait was around 40 minutes. other than that, the staff were friendly! That said, im not getting anything from there again.

Theresa S

Google
It would be nice if they let people know ahead of time that you CAN'T dine in. I guess paying staff to allow that would be a lot to ask. I'm not going to eat chinese food in my car. Shame on you for keeping ypur diningroom closed years after COVID. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Google
The greatness of this place and the people working here go hand in hand. I am not one to rate takeout style chinese places as any special over the other ones but this one was really good..prices were great for the weekend where everything else is 15 to 20 dollars especially going by buffet cost at least. I had Shrimp and Lobster sauce and the container came full. There was so much it was overflowing and they placed extra plastic in it to control it. I watched the guy cook and he puts on a show. The wife was nice as well and I saw her talking to customers about their lives more than I have in many takeout spots. There was one other restaurant I seen it where the food was kind of close to this. They make Lobster Sauce here great, will have to come back real soon for the Egg foo young and I hear the Chow mein is awesome. And kudos to the fortunes I just happened to get lucky to receive.

Google
AMAZING food. Fresh, massive portions. Please note : it is rare to get your phone call answered when theyre busy. Best bet is either order ahead or go in and order. Its worth the wait. A sweet couple, running their own restaurant. Everything is made right there, not prepackaged. Their egg rolls are hands down the freshest and best egg rolls. It is not a dine in restaurant.. you can go in and order and wait inside or in your car. Theres a few chairs for those who are waiting.

Google
We had a great meal. Homemade dumplings were delicious. Will be our go to for dumpings from now on. Orange chicken was good. Not too sweet. Beef and broccoli was good too. Nice flavor and veggies were good.
google avatar

Keith H.

Yelp
Get. The. Orange Beef. (with Broccoli) The portions are HUGE. The wait after ordering is long and WORTH IT. The sweet and sour chicken is also very good, with plenty of fresh pineapple. Have patience, they are BUSY for good reason.

Frank Z.

Yelp
Excellent food in generous portions! The sweet and sour chicken is fantastic, as the beef lo mein. I like to upgrade the chicken fried rice in the combos to pork ($3 up charge - well worth it).

Yelp
Once again another great dinner from the China Star , all these years I've been coming here and sometimes it seems they get better Everytime , I recommend you give them a try

Florian N.

Yelp
My first time visit and I ordered the pepper steak with onions. When I got home and took my first bite I knew this was going to be my go to restaurant for Chinese dinners. For years I bought this meal at another local Chinese restaurant but the meat was like eating rubber and I thought it's supposed to taste like that . At the China Star the meat was tender with full flavors throughout the meal. From now on I will only buy pepper steak W onions at China Star...! The employee who took my order was a sweetheart and very friendly. And I like to thank the chef for creating the best in class pepper steak. Thank you, from your new life time customer

Nikki C.

Yelp
Fried dumplings! That guy wasn't kidding! Wow! Orange chicken! Beef and broccoli! Chicken lo mein! Beef in curry sauce! Shrimp with lobster sauce! We haven't had a dish we don't like. Can't wait to get into the soups soon!

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Two Words HOMEMADE DUMPLINGS If that's the only thing you get get them fried Have to have 85 characters to post DUMPLINGS DUMPLINGS

Becky S.

Yelp
I've been coming here for ove 15 yrs. The portions are huge and the food is so flavorful. The husband and wife are the only workers. Such a sweet couple.

Yelp
They r one of my favorites! Plenty of food! Huge servings. They get very busy. Sometimes u hv to go in an order then wait. Phone rings off th hook! Call early if u can. Dinner hrs get crazy! Tells u they hv great food.

Thomas C.

Yelp
Delicious and huge portions. Vast menu of Chinese delicacies. Carryout service only. Very hard working Husband and wife team. Great food and reasonable prices. A must try restaurant. Closed on Mondays.

Gable I.

Yelp
This restaurant has good vegan and plant based dishes but there American Chinese food is just plain old bland not good at all

Carol D.

Yelp
Have a sit down restaurant! The food was mediocre. Will not be back. It looked dark and dreary. Like you were in a dark alley.

brian s.

Yelp
Hands down best Chinese food in the Riverview area and surrounding cities. If you're OK with waiting on food well worth the wait this is your spot. There's one man and one woman running in this place and man do they bust their butt to push out the best food around.

Robert C.

Yelp
Great food and fast service. We used to go to Rose Garden but it changed hands and the new owners changed the way the sauce was made. This place has good sauce and the rest is good too!
google avatar

Yelp
Went there Yesterday and ended up with nausea and threw up this morning around 1:30

Yelp
We really like this place. It's only takeout and the husband and wife that own and run the business work really hard and do a nice job. Don't be surprised if you can't get your call through during the dinner rush. They do the best they can for just the two of them. Great portions and very tasty.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
This place used to be good. But there are too many health code violations to ignore. The food is iffy at best. Years ago I would say it was good but since the pandemic it's gone downhill. They could do a lot to clean up the restaurant. The lobby is filthy. There was a bag of fertilizer sitting on the chairs in the former dining era. I don't know of a good Chinese restaurant in this area anymore it seems they all cut corners. I hate to make this review because I like the guy who cooks there. Clean this place up and maybe your business will go up.
google avatar

La-Tanya W.

Yelp
Best Chinese I've had since moving out this way. Food was fresh. Customer service was great. I took mine to go but we enjoyed the Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Egg Foo Young.

Gary K.

Yelp
Delicious food! Very busy so sometimes they don't answer their phone. Inside needs a good cleaning.
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
The portions were gigantic and the food was delicious. The egg rolls have pork AND shrimp which was a very pleasant surprise. They told us to come in 60 minutes and the food was ready to the minute. They even called to let me know which was also helpful and great service. Would order from here again.
google avatar

Miguel R.

Yelp
Excellent food, huge portions, and nice service. A very humble local restaurant that has been around for a while now that lives up to its name completely. None of the other Chinese takeout spots compare.

Yelp
Ive lived downriver for a year now and ive been searching for a nearby Chinese place to rival my favorite detroit spot. This is only a few miles away from my house but surpriaingly, I never happened upon it, until now. . . Ive know about it about a month and have eaten there 3 times. . Its ran by a couple, they are following COVID protocol. Because ots just them, it takes AWHILE. I dont think ive ever eaited so long for takeoit Chinese. An hour probably on one visit. But the food is good. Like, gooddd. Ive tried Almond chicken (huge portions, good breading, not a fan of the gravy) Sweet and Sour Chicken, (Good breading, good portion, sauce is pretty good.) Orange Chicken, General Tsos Chicken, Both good. Very similar, with the GT being just a bit spicy. But not really lol. Sesame Chicken- DELICIOUS. Probably one of my favorites from here. Shrimp with lobster sauce- (delicious, brown sauce, IYKYK) Curry Chicken (could be more curry-y for me) Hot and Sour Soup- AMAZING. THIS IS WHY I CAME BACK. So much TOFU, chicken chunks, mushrooms, the smell of sesame oil. Its delicious. Fried wonton- just regular soup wontona deep fried. Crab rangoons- good flavor, a bit overfried. . The portions are big. . The prices are good. . Just dont be in a hurry for the food, call an hour ahead, and then wait the hour. If they dont answer, keep calling. Takes me about 20 minutes to get thru. . But its worth it.
google avatar

Michele O.

Yelp
Food very good. Everyone there is friendly. If you're in the mood for some good carryout they are worth a try.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Large portions, very good. Packaging for carryout was well done. You may want to order 1 meal to share unless you like leftovers for the next day.

Yelp
I had almost given up on finding some good old-fashioned Chinese food. I went to this restaurant because they had really good reviews. But the one across the street from me on Northline also has good reviews, but my experience wasn't that great. With that being said, I like to say that I was not disappointed. First off, the customer service was excellent, and the owners are just great and really courtesy and nice people. Now, we really really enjoyed our food. I had the General Tso chicken, and the Steak Kow. The chicken was just the right spice and boy did they give you a lot! As for the Steak Kow, it was excellent. All the wonderful crispy vegetables with whole sauteed mushrooms was awesome and very, very tasty. If I only have one criticism, was that the fried rice that came with it was overcooked and kind of mushy. But they didn't skimp on the amount that they gave you or did they skimp on flavor. I will be returning to this place because it's just hard to find good old fashioned Chinese food like you remember when you were going up. Not to mention enough food for a week!

Yelp
Great food, love the "mom and pop" feel. Every time we order from there we get classic authentic food

Erin M.

Yelp
This food is great! Huge portion! Very nice people! They don't always answer their phone because they are so busy. I just keep calling or walk in to order.

Jonny D.

Yelp
Amazing food the rice and chicken was absolutely astonishing the sweet and sour soup is the best in town great place would definitely recommend
google avatar

Ann B.

Yelp
Best Chinese Food Downriver hands down. Yes they look sketchy inside. Yes it may take a little longer to pick up your order. Relax it will be worth the wait. Since I don't eat meat, I get a pint of vegetable fried rice. To start the container is always overflowing. My meat eater friends get the almond chicken dinner. It's enough for 2 adults to eat, and still have leftovers for her husband to take to work the next day. And they love the crab ragoon. Only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because they don't have any spring rolls.
google avatar

Charles B.

Yelp
Best Chinese Food Downriver Period. The owners are the nicest people and it is definitely worth the wait.

Joy S.

Yelp
Almond Chicken. Always good consistent food. Favorite place to enjoy Chinese food. Very nice family.

J H.

Yelp
This place use to be good. I think they may be out of business because they NEVER Answer the phone. we have tried several times on different days & times. Just a hole in the wall anyway

Yelp
I am so happy that I read about this wonderful Chinese restaurant. The sweet couple that have owned it for 30 years are amazing! The pandemic is bad,& I Thank God we can get this home cooking .such fresh ingredients. The won ton soup was delicious. There was a lot of vegetables in the broth! I love the fried noodles that go in the soup, too. I've never had such huge portion of fried chicken pieces for the Almond chicken. So good! Be patient . It's only 2 people and it's worth the 1 hour wait.
google avatar

Harold W.

Yelp
The best Chinese food I've ever eaten . Best mom and pop restaurant down river for Asian cruise . 1000 percent good . That's everything on their menu .

Dave S.

Yelp
Food is awesome. Hot and sour soup is the best downriver. You will definitely get your money's worth. They may not answer the phone right away, it is a real mom and pop shop but keep trying, it's worth it.

Yelp
Great for take out, a lot of food for a low price. I wouldn't eat there, it's a little run down. The orange chicken wasn't too soggy but had a good amount of sauce, still a little crunchy. Good flavor as well. General gso (sp?) was very good, also a good amount of sauce on it, but not soggy. Egg rolls were like the ones from any other take out place around, we were happy with them. Egg drop soup was more salty than expected but the consistency was good. We had one bowl each and there's still soup leftover. We have enough for a meal tomorrow as well, I would recommend this place for take out.
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
We ordered sweet and sour chicken. It came with an abundance of chicken. We upgraded to shrimp fried rice for $1. It also came with a heaping amount and a very crispy, big egg roll. The sweet and sour sauce was only ok. It tasted like a mixture of a red and orange sauce. Overall, it was a good meal with plenty of leftovers!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Not a big fan of Chinese food but China Star changed that, high quality meat, good sauces, always hot and fresh and doesn't taste generic. Big kitchen and family owned, love this place. Honestly haven't found a better value in chinese food. For the price point their food is great.

Yelp
A must read on they Facebook page the story of An & Co owners story of the American dream how the got to open this restaurant 25 years ago. The most beautiful story of a business ever posted to Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/ChinaStarWyandotte/ We been customers over 20 year's in Love with the best Sizzling Rice Soup ever. This visit she had a Double order Pepper Steak with Chinese Veggies Soup n Egg Roll. Me a outrageous flavorful Super Special dish Singapore Rice Noodles with Chicken, Pork n Shrimp with Egg truly unique only a few places make this me all time favorite Chinese Dish. Place has changed since opening so hard to find worker's they now close dining room at 3pm each day ONLY CARRYOUT after 3pm. Yelp
I have been going to China Star since I was in my teens. I am now 43 and I have been driving there still even though I moved from Wyandotte. Their food is excellent with huge portions and good price. My personal favorite is General Tso chicken. Nothing like anywhere. They have the good egg rolls with the bean sprouts, auto comes with chicken fried rice. Tried many other dishes that are excellent too. Orange, sesame, almond, etc. all great. The owners are amazing also. I love this couple. Only con is it's hard to get through to order. They are really busy and takes a while to answer the phone. Keep trying though, it's worth it.

Kayla W.

Yelp
We ordered 4 meals from there yesterday and when we got the food back to the house, the beef looked raw and smelled awful. They should've never served that to us. When we called to get a replacement or our money back, but the owner was rude, told us no refund at my store and hung up. What kind of business refuses to replace RAW food? Do not spend your money at this business! -1000/10

Rosa H.

Yelp
Best Chinese takeout downriver. Big potions and always good. The owners are so nice and they work very hard it's just the both of them doing all the cooking and taking orders.

Vince G.

Yelp
You wouldn't be able to tell from the outside, but China Star has some of the best Chinese food in the downriver area. Their dishes are elevated a bit over most of the other Chinese places in the area. The owners are friendly and are always working hard. Sometimes they are so busy they aren't able to answer the phone, which is the only downside to this place.
google avatar

Molly R.

Yelp
Extremely friendly family owned business; Great Chinese food with servings that could feed an army and a price point that can't be beat! The "Dinner for Four" served 7 with a ton of leftovers. Looking forward to tomorrow's lunch ;)

Lynn L.

Yelp
Great flavors, excellent portions. Will revisit! Even my picky father enjoyed it. The hot and sour soup was his favorite. Thus was two weeks ago but I'm thinking we will order again this evening.
google avatar

Donna R.

Yelp
I found this little place (and I do mean little) when I lived in the fruit section in Southgate 13 years ago. The food portions are huge (I can eat 3x off one dinner combo!) and the prices very reasonable. Try the Szechuan Shrimp or Szechuan Chicken..not overly spicy and just to die for. . The usual suspects (Almond Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice, Pepper Steak, Egg Drop Soup) ) are all very good too. The owner lady is really, really nice. We moved to a new town downriver and still come back here for carry out all the time. BEWARE: closed Sunday and Monday!!

Pam L.

Yelp
The best Chinese food downriver! Although they can be hard to get in touch with because their phone is ringing off the hook, it is worth the effort. Portions are huge and food is always delicious.

Brian J.

Yelp
Excellent family owned shop. Hard working husband and wife that serve up superior Chinese dishes. I've never found anything comparable in the area. General Tso is the absolute best you will find, it's a must try.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
This is my favorite local Chinese place. The almond chicken is the best! Unfortunately my boyfriend isn't a huge fan of it here because he likes the stir fry platters like chicken and vegetables or steak and veggies and he said it isn't good from here but I wouldn't know... I always get rice and almond chicken. We both agree that the crab rangoon's are really good though! If you're local and looking for some good Chinese food, this is the place to go!
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem. They're story is one that will amaze you, and they're food is authentic, tasteful, and the provide a huge portion! Been there many times and it's always perfect. Love this place!
