17 FiDi Lunch Spots Under $20

"This new-ish Chinese bowl spot, co-owned by a veteran of former FiDi restaurant Tomorrow, arrived in the neighborhood in March. The menu focuses on homey Chinese fare doled out in hefty portions for takeout or delivery. Try the restaurant’s signature bowl — honey-soy glazed pork belly layered over rice and vegetables — or the simple and satisfying Grandma’s Favorite, heaping with fist-sized meatballs, a mix of scrambled eggs and tomatoes, cabbage, and forbidden black rice." - Eater Staff

So delicious! Flavoring and ambience is on point. Food is fresh as well. The manager and workers were also very nice - they ran out of braised pork and they replaced it with another meat at my request and even gave me a free scalliburrito for the inconvenience. Definitely a must try!

The owner truly brought back traditional nostalgia and shares a piece of his own memories and culture through delicious food. If you are looking for a healthy balance meal that is prepped in under 5 minutes, this is it! Every bite brought me closer to my own heritage. The heritage I used to be so ashamed of growing up in America, but I grew older, I am learning so much my culture through Chinese food, I am reminded of how rich and healthy Chinese food can be. Especially at Chinah. Thank you for sharing your favorite, (Grandma's Favorite) with me. I consumed each bite with while thinking of my own grandma too. It was soo delicious! Similar to Chipotle or poké spots, you can customize your own bowls. However!! You will notttt be bloated and feel like you need to use the bathroom while at work or while at the most inconvenient times. Maybe it's just me, but dairy and raw fish can make my stomach feel uneasy sometimes... or all the time. However with Chinah, all the meat and protein is cooked and the ingredients are all farm fresh produce. There is so much love and effort put into each bowl, from how they sourced the ingredients to how they plated everything. I also highly recommend trying the forbidden black rice. I have no idea why I never had this at home before, if you never had it before, its a must try. The rice has the most antioxidants activity, and super nutritious. It also has anti cancer properties and may promote heart and eye health. ALSO reduces body fat. I was so mind blown by the texture, I may have done a little research on my own. Long story short, just try it! Trust me, it's delicious.

This place is a new addition to the culinary scene in the area and so has a lot of stiff competition to compete with. It claims the niche of a being a fast-bowl concept for Chinese food. I had looked at the menu beforehand coming in and had decently high expectations from their pre-constructed items. The location of the restaurant is off to the side of the main street, and can be a little harder to find. It also is currently covered by scaffolding. The layout of the restaurant itself is a little strange, with ordering being basically done standing right before some entry stairs. The service pick up area is also on the opposite side of the stairs up to where I assume is more seating. Overall, the staff are very friendly but it feels like they haven't gotten down a good system of building bowls fast and efficiently yet. The organization of their tiny bowl building area is within an enclosed square before the menus rather than an assembly line like Chipotle. Only two people can really fit there at a time, and the assembly seems a little awkward. The food was a bit of a letdown. I grew up eating Cantonese food and I really love the Szechuan variety restaurants around this area. Chinah unfortunately doesn't quite stand up to those restaurants. I tried the OG and the forbidden sesame from their summer menu. The OG features air fried chicken. This chicken was not really crispy and had soggy crust from the dousing of orange sauce that overpowered everything. The black rice was okay, but it got super mushy at the bottom due to water from the salad and corn. The forbidden sesame sauce was more tolerable, but the rice still had the same textural issue. I can say they felt healthier to eat, but I didn't pick up a strong sense of Chinese food from this due to lack of flavor.

Very unique place. It's a build your own bowl style of Asian Cuisine and I gotta say there Creamy Sesame was my favorite sauce. I got the "open sesame" it was phenomenal.

Thie Spicy Vegan Bowl is da bomb for me. Plant-based and reminded me of the authentic and delicious home-style food that has been cooked by my Mum. Good stuff guys! Will return again :) PS: It's not spicy, so if you like heat, ask them to load up on that hot sauce baby.

Google
Like the food presentation, service and VI design, but as a Chinese the food unfortunately does not “Tastes Like Home”. Flavor was okay but overpriced. ——— Update ——— Owner’s response just made the experience worse. I have no issue paying extras to get the best items on the menu as long as it tastes good. The flavor/texture is not worth $17.41 that’s all what I’m saying.

Tried it out as I was curious. Restaurant smells quite authentic and food waa good. We got the kungpao chicken. It didnt taste much like what we were expecting, but it tasted good. The sides of egg tomato and the chinese veggies that the cashier didnt know the name of were good. Overall, good balance in a bowl. A bit pricey for chinese, but I think their concept is healthier posher chinese. They have a loyalty program, you can sign up at the restaurant on their pad. They did make one big mistake on my bowl, it was soaked in sesame seeds... not sure if the lid of the shaker fell off as they were adding sesame seeds on my dish xD but it sure feels that way. I like a sprinkle on the food, had to take a lot out.

I used to love the meatballs but recently it is super hard to digest. Don’t know if they change the recipe or chef. What happened? The third photo is what it used to be. I missed the old version.

Yelp
Decided to try a bowl here. Got the sesame chicken bowl and was definitely disappointed. Everything is one big pile of mushiness. The broccoli, rice, chicken are all severely overcooked like they've been sitting under a heater for a very long time. The bowl didn't have much flavor and I'm thoroughly disappointed in this $14 meal, most of which I threw away. On the plus side, the staff was really nice and I enjoyed interacting with them.

Yelp
I passed by this place on my way to another lunch spot. I wanted to check it out as it's fairly new. They advertise to go on their app. However, the app doesn't even work for this location. I'm not sure when the app will start working. Maybe some kinks have to be worked out still. The restaurant has a dine-in area and a nice outdoor area setup to eat at, too. I did see an upstairs area, but I'm not sure if that's for the workers only or for the customers. I decided to just take it out. There weren't that many ingredients available by the time I went by. I had to pick from what was leftover. I got the tofu and chicken with some sides. There was a lack of seasoning when I ate it, too. I would like to go back earlier when they have more options and when they start using the app as the first order is $10 off.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood. Tried build your own bowl mix and it was pretty tasty with healthy ingredients too. Service was prompt and there are plenty of seats upstairs if you want to catch up with a colleague. Prices are pretty reasonable. Am happy to have a new lunch spot option to add to the list.

Yelp
LOVE this new lunch and bowl location on E 40th and Madison. The OG Bowl I had with black rice, crispy chicken and salad was healthy and fresh. Amazing value! Go and enjoy!

Yelp
**i was invited to their grand opening event** i've been a long-time fan of chinah since discovering them in jersey city and was so excited to check out their grand opening event! the team did a fantastic job with the interior - there is limited seating on the first floor, and then a lot more seating upstairs on the second floor. the first floor is also where you'll order food from. there is a restroom in the back. all the servers at chinah are always very quick to help and love to give you their recommendations - so don't be afraid to ask for what their favorites are! fun fact but chinah actually revamped their menu over the last year to make it CHEAPER for folks. each bowl is around $12 and contains so much food. you can ask for as many toppings as you want so it's kind of like a chipotle/qdoba bowl situation, except make it modern chinese and AMAZING during this event, we tried a new menu item (scallion pancake burrito) and honestly it was really good! i can't wait for them to come out with the real deal on their menu :)

Yelp
Race to the bottom! Chinah answers the question, "Where is an Americanized chinese fast food exist that's worse than Panda Express?" I got the OG Bowl, which, by its name, I assumed might be what they do best. In reality, I suppose OG means "old gamey" chicken. Gross tough chicken bits covered excessively in batter and the entire dish slathered in sweet sauce. More of an unappealing dessert than a lunch. May this chain close forever and never open again. TOTAL waste of an appetite.

Yelp
i remember going to the jersey city location a long while back and the food there was very good but the service was abysmal. fast forward a year or two and it looks like they've expanded and also completely revamped their menu! i ordered the og. the sauces were good but the chicken was too breaded. service was pleasant and efficient. may come back to try something else for work lunch.

Yelp
Spent half hour trying to place an order both on the website and the app. Couldn't process the payment, therefore couldn't use the $10 promo. Went straight to the store and used the physical 15% off coupon to order instead. The place is new but does not seem very tidy and organized. The staffs, obviously new, seemed adequately trained. They were waking back and forth and appeared overwhelmed but not much physical actions. I was the only the third in line but it still took about 15 minutes to get my order and another 5 minutes waiting to pay. The food seemed pretty mediocre at best. Soba noodle tasted bland and the pork was dry and cold. They didn't give me any sauces with my order, which might have helped with the flavors. The best was probably the black rice and the bokchoy which is not too hard to get right. Overall, a disappointment from the online order experience to the service and the food.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my first experience at Chinah. The food was fresh and tasty and while the line was long, it moved very quickly. I really enjoyed a great deal and will return promptly.
