If you're like me, you probably have a little bit of a Dr Jekyll / Mr Hyde personality when it comes to this pandemic. Some days I am in absolute heaven wandering around in my robe and pajamas from with no need to brush my hair or shave or bathe. Other days I long for my pre-pandemic life where every morning meant grooming myself for a full day of meetings, friends, family, theater, eating out and living life to its fullest . This past weekend was the former.
It rained and iced all weekend and out of complete boredom and with a craving to eat something other than what was in my fridge, I swore I would get my act together and put on my sweatpants and head out for some takeout. Why is everything during the pandemic need to be calculated and a major ordeal? Is it really that difficult to put on some clothes and go out for 15 minutes? How did I go from Mr. Busy 24 Hours A Day to a major debate over what beanie to put on that could accommodate my mask and my glasses.? And then yesterday after three days of hibernation I hopped into my car and satisfied my craving for good Chinese food. I headed straight for China's Best on Lawndale Avenue. My kids turned me on to this place and I find their food really delicious. Their covid policies are perfect for my taste. You call in advance, place your order, they inquire about the make of your car, give you a window of time to pick it up and you pull up in front and don't even need to get out of your car. With a quick phone call to those inside, a staff person comes out with your food and you are on your way.
I did want to make a comment to whoever that staff person was that brought me my food regarding appreciation for a tip. The bill came to approximately $15 and I gave him a $20 bill and told him to keep the change. That's a pretty nice tip in my book and I did not even get a thank you! I think he muttered "okay" or something like that when I told him to keep the change. To all of you hard working people out there during the pandemic..I cannot begin to tell you how appreciative we all are of the risk you take coming to work every day to make sure we get our gas, groceries, medical attention, etc. By the same token, let's never forget basic niceties like saying thank you when somebody gives you a 30% tip! It kind of turned me off to do it again but I don't want to hurt the next staff person because of this person's lack of expression of appreciation. How much does it take to say thanks?
Anyway, I headed on home, worked hard with my trainer and then got into my covid special of plaid pajamas, t-shirt and blue robe and house slippers and sat down for my feast of vegetable egg foo young, onion fried rice, egg drop soup, noodles and the infamous fortune cookie. Boy, did that hit the spot! Even though they mentioned a necessity to raise prices during the pandemic I still find their prices very moderate and if you do like their combos that come with an egg roll, those prices are fantastic and those meals are delicious and bountiful as well. Even though I got my second vaccination, I'm still afraid to go inside most places and I take my hat off to China's Best to have a system where you never even have to enter the premises. You don't even have to get out of your car or your pajamas! Now that's covid living! Ironically, my fortune cookie told me that I'm a very generous person. I saved it and I plan to show it to the staff person who could not even acknowledge my tip. And as for China's Best, I couldn't be happier with their quality, quantity, service and convenience and covid sensitivity.
