So, a coworker recommended this place a while ago but I had not tried it until recently. I am submitting this review after coming here for a second time. The first time I came by it was on a weekend so they seemed to be getting ready for a catering gig. I ordered the Barbacoa and carne asada on the first go around. The second time I got the 3 taco combo, all 3 carnitas, and an order of the elote, cause you know us Mexicans and our elote- it is a must.
Let's start with the dissection of what you come here for, the food.
Barbacoa and asada, quite good. Tender meats and very flavorful.
The carnitas, a bit dry and bland. All of them had a bit of a sweetness to them which is not unpleasant but not expected from savory tacos.
I chose the corn tortilla being a traditional type of gal, and the tortilla is thick, yet it does not hold up well. Probably because the meats do come quite saucy, but still. The flavor if the tortilla is not bad, but lacks practicality since it falls apart.
Now, for the additional toppings, not traditional, but good. They add pickled red onions (which I enjoyed) and cotija cheese (also did not mind at all).
As for the elote, I have Mexican standards for elote or esquite (pronounced eh-skee-teh) and these did pretty well. It is literally corn sliced off the cobb with mayo, cotija cheese, butter and chile if you like. Nothing extraordinary. They add Japanese mayo instead of regular one which also made it a little sweet.
So, overall, I can see how this is considered gourmet. The quality of meats is very good and the tastes are very different than what you expect from your traditional tacos. Everything was a tad sweet which threw me off.
The Spanish rice was okay. The Pinto beans were salty.
A bit disappointed with the salsas. They were again, a bit sweet bit not spicy. And I am a total wimp with spicy.
If you are looking to try something new, give it this place a shot. Just be aware the prices are "gourmet" prices. $12.50 for the 3 taco combo with very small sides of rice and beans, but the tacos were very good portioned on meats.
If you are looking for some down and dirty traditional tacos, this is not the place. Probably more like a place to impress that first date ;)
Service was great. The place is not necessarily the most welcoming or somewhere I would want to stay to eat though. It felt a bit overcrowded and there were boxes in the dining area making it feel even more crowded. Some cool wall art though.
