Chipotle Nationwide Retraining After Latest Foodborne Illness Outbreak | Eater

"Once a fast-casual burrito chain whose name is widely recognized, the restaurant has been plagued by repeated foodborne illness incidents over several years, most recently when nearly 700 people in Ohio were sickened by Clostridium perfringens linked to food held at unsafe temperatures. Earlier crises in 2015–2016 affected multiple states, sickened dozens (including at least 20 hospitalizations), prompted federal criminal probes and multiple lawsuits, and a 2017 norovirus outbreak at a Sterling, Virginia location sickened 13 more. In response the company has implemented measures such as paid sick leave, free-burrito offers, revised food-handling procedures, a stated zero-tolerance policy on working while ill, and now a nationwide retraining of employees plus recurring employee knowledge assessments announced by CEO Brian Niccol. Meanwhile the chain is testing new menu items like Mexican chocolate milkshakes, quesadillas and bacon as it attempts to repair its reputation and regain customer trust." - Brenna Houck

When being asked what I would like on my bowl, I asked for lettuce. When I sat down and opened my bowl, there was no lettuce. So I just went up to the counter to ask for some lettuce and she looked over and said they were all out. No, they had just put it away for the night. I asked for lettuce at 7:30.... they must be closing at 8. Because she was then emptying the drink dispensers at 7:50 when I went up to get a refill and dumped what I wanted in a bin. Sad

I Went to go pick up an order for my sister got and when I got home with it and it was a burrito not 3 tacos like she had ordered. I get back up there around 10:30 they give me the correct order it was a soft taco and not a hard shell like she ordered and it was all gooey and cold, by this time it was already 11pm. You guys have a somewhat simple job, people expect to get what they payed for. she didn’t even eat the food it was not what she had ordered and it got messed up twice. it was a waste of her money and my gas money to make 2 trips up there. I will be up there tomorrow morning to complain. Very poor customer service.

Unfortunately it seems the staff at 9:10 was trying to close early and had ALL OF THE CHAIRS on top of the tables making no comfortable or open places to sit. I would like to think maybe they were cleaning the floor but that is not the case. When I went to order my steak bowl the young lady helped me barely put any portions in and by the time it was done it looked like 1/2 the size it should be. My suspicion in that they were trying to conserve inventory so they didn't need to make more for the night.... They also only had 3 bags of chips left that one of the employees pointed out. (Probably since they were so excited to close in an hour and fourty five minutes that they didn't want to make any more) If I managed this store I would rethink the late night staff since they don't seem to want to do their job but rather plan an early close.

Chipotle is one of my favorite places to eat. I have never had a bad meal there. I often order ahead on the app and just go in and pick it up. It is often not ready when they say it will be, but as soon as I tell them I am there, they usually get it ready pretty quickly.

I want to start off by saying that Chipotle is not my type of food for diet restriction issues. However, my wife loves Chipotle. I went there without her and had her on speaker phone as she was able to accurately describe the bowl she wanted and accurately interpret her order in a friendly and efficient fashion. The cost was very affordable for a significant amount of food.

Absolutely unacceptable experience at Chipotle! Not only was I overcharged – my order should’ve been $11 but somehow came out to a staggering $16.47 – but to add insult to injury, they basically called me fat doing that. I couldn’t believe it. I double-checked my receipt and prices, and the math just doesn’t add up. Between the unexpected charges and the completely unprofessional treatment, I left feeling disrespected and upset. Customer service was nonexistent, and the lack of basic respect is honestly shocking. Update to really rub salt in the burn they put meat in queso! I’m vegetarian 🌱

Tiny burrito. Half scoop rice, quarter scoop chicken. Love chipotle but prices went up and sizes shrunk. After adding all my toppings and seeing how empty it was I had to ask them to go back and put more rice just for filler, otherwise I would have left hungry. Normally a decent spot. Went today and was given subpar portions and had to ask for more. Mild salsa was pretty much soup. Got home to a poorly wrapped burrito. When I bit into it, could tell the wrap was stale. Chips were also stale.

Sure would've like'd to have gotten the quesadilla that should've been in this container. Instead I'm $10 poorer and still hungry. Go to Chipotle's website to report, click submit, an error comes up to refresh page, annnddddd back to square one reporting the issue. Go through the process again and same results. Happy I donated $10 to Chipotles bottom line.

I do not have a receipt because my daughter had it. But the two orders were placed on June 2, 2024 from the Brimfield, Ohio chipolte. Both orders had food issues.

The rice is always undercooked. They seem to skimp on all ingredients unless you watch and ask them. My last meal here was only 2.5 ounces of meat. They are supposed to give you a large spoonful approx 4 ounces.

Staff is rude. You ask for extra servings and they just look at you like you're asking for $1,000,000 dollars. I spent $13 on a bowl today and found a huge chunk of plastic wrap in my bowl. Like wtf is this. Y'all need to work on your staff skills and on keeping your food safe to eat. Will never be returning to this crap location

This was our go-to Chipotle until today. Picked up some burritos, got home, and they not only strangely didn't taste good, they were soooo spicy, it was painful to eat them. All that was in it was beans, rice , lettuce, avocado and grilled peppers and onions, - no meat, no salsa, no extra spicy stuff- so I'm guessing it was the peppers, but it was wayyy off, like someone had put spicy peppers or sauce in it as a joke. It made me feel nauseous, and I couldn't eat it. We have eaten at Chipotle a hundred times and this was something wrong.... By now it's too late to go back so I call the restaurant to let them know that something might be contaminated or something. The supervisor on duty, Nathan, clearly wasn't concerned, (this despite my mentioning I have health conditions that preclude me from eating crazy spicy food like this) didn't seem to believe me, and spent ten minutes mansplaining to me first how they aren't in control of the spice, then that they only add salt or oregano; am I sure I didn't add salsa, did I watch what the girl added, etc.... When I finally managed to get him back on track to what he was going to do to make it right, he first offered to refund me then said he couldn't since it wasn't a call-in; next he said if I came tomorrow they could remake it, but first, I can't go tomorrow, and second, even if I could, I'm not really sure about going back here anymore. The call ended with him saying he'd talk to his higher-ups. Jesus. What is happening to the world? What used to be a simple one-minute call and reassurance they'd look into it and make sure the food was safe, has become a confused lecture by an inexperienced, nonchalant idiot, and no getting your money back. Not going back.

I'm not sure why this chipotle has bad reviews but I've been here countless times and it's always been a good experience, even when they are busy. Today I noticed the Tofu and asked about it and she offered me a free sample immediately without asking. And it was really good. I'm normally a Barbacoa or Chicken guy but that tofu is actually really good so I got double with Chicken and Tofu, loved it!

If I could give this no stars I would. I made the mistake of driving all the way home before checking my order. So, third trip, 15 minutes later, I now have kind of fresh food. All young people working here, including the manager, who could care less about customer service, or fresh food. The guacamole on the orders, and the sides we ordered were completely rotten! Cold food. $30 worth of food, three trips, manager with an attitude, no apology, no credit, nothing. I knew customer service was dead, but, really? You want me to pay how much for rotten food, and then act like it's my problem for bringing it back? I think my Chipotle days are over. This place is horrible. Unsanitary, and not fresh. Don't bother. ****Update**** After returning home, I discovered that three bags of tortilla chips were totally stale. In fact, they were chewy. This place is absolutely disgusting. I threw everything in the trash. I will be calling corporate on Monday for the refund not offered by the "manager" and to make a complaint on this store. ******Update****** Instead of throwing the food away, I drove back to the chipotle to get a refund. The manager was unapologetic, rude, and in no way should hold a management position. Over 60 miles traveled in three trips back to this place. Crazy. And, the refund I'll have to wait on too. Apparently this company has web-based customer service. So, I have to wait on someone to contact me to get my money back. I've heard it all now. What ever happened to someone taking pride in what they do for a living, and working hard for their money.

The bowls were fine. The 'large' order of chips was comically small. I did ask if this was right because it just seemed like a mistake. It wasn't. This is what they will sell you in a large bag. The resolution, wait in line and order another bag (thanks but no thanks).

I was a bit nervous to eat here with all the news recently but I'm still alive to do this review, so let's get started. The line was out the door which is typically a norm for this place especially at peak hours. However, we were able to order fairly quickly. I am not at frequent eater of Chipotle so I asked to sample the barbacoa and they obliged happily. I ended up getting two of those tacos and 1 chicken taco, made plain with double meat and a side of sour cream. All my tacos were very delicious!! My husband got 3 chicken tacos and queso and chips. He was very happy with his meal as well. The facility was nice and clean granted how busy it was and the staff was very friendly. I will definitely return to this location.

Skimpiest chipotle I've ever been to. Their normal serving for about everything, especially rice, beans, and their protein, leaves your bowl/burrito so empty, you essentially need to ask for extra everything in order to match what you get for the same price at every other chipotle. Even their "extra" servings are barely more than what you start with at any other location. Normally that's not necessarily a bad thing if you're diet conscious, but my usual order is filling enough to be fully satisfied and satiated, however this place always has left me hungry. Now, even asking for extra for just about everything leaves your bowl half empty. The quality of the food is fine, but the servings from this chipotle are the worst in the entire greater Akron area.

The last two times there for carry out, I got home with incomplete orders. I tried to call but the phone bot won't let you navigate to what you want only what to order. Trying to report the issues online with is just as bad. Done with Chipotle.

Ordered a double meat chicken burrito with pinto beans, extra white rice and extra cheese. when I got it home, hardly any chicken or cheese. Had more corn than meat. paid for double meat and they skimped on it. This is not the first time that this location has done that. Never order without physically watching them make it.

I've been ordering from this chipotle for months now and they always seem to get things wrong. Twice they've left off my steak entirely despite charging me for a steak bowl. Even during busy hours, the rice is overcooked and bland. The chips are often under-fried and always lack flavor. The Stow and Hudson locations are much more competent. I love chipotle but this one is a total mess. Don't waste your money.

It's clean inside , and the employees seemed at peace amongst themselves which is nice for customers standing in line . However I went with my infant and toddler to church up with a long time friend to have lunch here as well . Due to covid I called first to see if there was indoor seating . Both the phone recording & website said dine-in available. After we got in from taking our kids out of the car seats we saw all tables marked closed temporarily. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING! Update your phone recording and website please . So much work to get your kids all inside just to turn around and car seat them back up a minute later .

My wife and I arrived around 9:10pm. The manager and staff greeted us. We placed a carryout order for burritos. This particular location was out of steak. The staff offered to cook us some fresh steak. We did not want the staff to make us steak because the staff was cleaning up. The manager compensated one of our meals and gave a free drinks. I believe this was thoughtful and kind gesture. The food was excellent and I was so surprised by the kind gesture of the manager I decided to write this review.

Terrible. This new chipotle location has turned me into a moes customer for life I'm afraid. The last 3 times I have been to this location they have not had fajita toppings (grilled onions and peppers) for your burrito. This is so frustrating. I went here 20 minutes before closing once and they had hardly any toppings out and the ones that were out looked so gross and dried up. I was excited when I heard this location was opening but after going here numerous times I will never risk eating at this chipotle again.

This is by far the most efficiently run chipotles I've ever been to. The staff is always so positive and friendly. We walked in with a line to the door and had our food within 6 minutes. You guys are awesome!

I have bit my tongue about this location so many times but this may be the last time ordering from here. Numerous times I have picked up food that was sloppily made. When ordering in line they rush you through your orders even when there is no line behind you, which causes sauces to leak out of the burritos or the bowls. Burritos to be wrapped poorly. Just a couple weeks ago I had to go back into the store after picking up my food (to get another bag and another container) because the bag was leaking out of the bottom and sauce spilled all over my car carpet. I've seen workers throw the guacamole spoon into the lettuce bowl because again they are rushing for no reason ( hopefully no one with allergy's to avocado ordered a salad that day) I've had SEVERAL orders where there is bad avocado in the guacamole. Most of the time the quac is brown and other times it has hard pieces of avocado in it which are not edible. For as much as it costs for a scoop of guacamole... please for god sakes, throw the bad avocados out. Last straw was my most recent order where this hard chunk of avocado consumed 1/2 of the side of guacamole that I ordered. This location is closest to me so it is convenient and I've given it many chances but this is getting ridiculous and my patience has now warn out. Please get it together. Slow. Down. Please. And stop selling crappy guacamole. We pay a premium for that ish.

We are so excited to finally have a Chipotle close, as the nearest one before was over 30 min away. It is your standard Chipotle. I got a bowl and the server doing mine was very generous with my portions, but the man who jumped on the line to do my boyfriend's was very stingy and he got jipped lol. We were very disappointed with the chips we got. They were soggy, and inedible. Almost as if someone had spilled water over the bag. Not worth it to drive back and get a replacement. We'll give them another shot, may have just been a bad day.

What a TERRIBLE Chipotle, service was horrible. Line worker doing meat was rude and I literally got 6 pieces of meat. Asked for a few extra and was charged $3.35 for 4 additional pieces. Then asked for extra cheese was told that would cost more also. Got to my table and the steak was actually cold, went and asked for a manager or supervisor was told they were busy. Avoid this location especially if you are a trucker delivering to Walmart. Not worth the aggravation....

The food here is great. However, don't risk going within an hour before they close. My friend and I are sitting here and one of the workers is sweeping the bench I'm sitting on. In order to mop the floors, he's also noisily throwing the chairs around right behind where we're sitting. I've worked in the food industry before, so I understand wanting to close on time. But there's a HUGE difference between cleaning to get out on time and making your guests feel like an inconvenience.

I just want to point out how sweet and awesome the girls were that helped me there - I had an online order than I made but arrived very early - they quickly made my food and gave me a free drink and apologized for my wait even though it was me that was early - just wanted to give a 5 stars to the people that work at the Brimfield store , thanks again.

I'm always containing an open mind when it comes to reviews. I simply use them as a reference for myself when I order so here's my experience of this Chipotle. Personally I thought the service was outstanding. The line was long however & all the employees were very engaged in their line of work. I myself had to ask for extra rice however that's abnormal because I am the customer & it's no problem for them either. I was greeted with kind gesture & I could tell they were really focused on my experience. I definitely would eat here again so I give this Chipotle a thumbs up!

Waiting forever for iced tea to be refilled. Seems as they know how to do lightening fast burritos they've lost sight of self serve drink area. Or maybe the fact it's self serve is the reason lower priority. Still waiting 10 minutes for the tea...poor management? Poor planning for sure. Oh well chipotle has its issues. Hope they fix them.

This is the worst chipotle. I have given it chance over and over time and time again, and every time is horrible. If you order online, the food is either not done when you get there, or tastes like it was made a half hour before you get there. The staff is far from friendly. I once placed an order for 5:30 and got off work early. Called and asked if they could make it by 5:15. The guy said "no we are so backed up on online orders and the line is out the door. I cancelled the order and walked in 5 minutes after I called and there was NO LINE and got in and out in 5 minutes. There was also 2 employees just sitting around in the back. So essentially I was lied to. The chips always taste old and they give you very little portions on everything. The last time I will ever be there, I ordered 2 bowls. When I got to the register, I asked for cheese and lettuce on the last bowl, and turned to pay. Got home and there was NO lettuce and very little cheese. I didn't know I had to babysit them for every little ingredient you ask for. So I paid full price for a bowl that had 2 ingredients in it. Clearly other people are upset with the service lately because the last 3 times I went in there, at 6pm, there was NO ONE.
