Chipotle’s New Menu Looks a Lot Like Taco Bell | Eater

"Once best known for its burritos, the chain has faced major challenges — including a widespread E. coli outbreak that sickened hundreds between 2015 and 2017 — and is experimenting to win back customers. It recently unveiled five new items (a Mexican chocolate milkshake, a quesadilla, an avocado tostada, nachos, and a green salad) at its NYC test kitchen with plans to roll them out across its roughly 2,500 U.S. locations; this is the first time so many items have been introduced at once since the company’s founding in 1993. Earlier additions—like queso, which drew mixed reviews, and buñuelos with chocolate sauce, which was later removed after sluggish sales—underscore the scrutiny new offerings receive. Leadership and strategy changes under a new CEO with a rival-chain background (including a planned headquarters move to California and the addition of drive-thrus) have prompted comparisons to that competitor. Company R&D says the menu moves respond to consumer requests, that new equipment will speed production of quesadillas and nachos, and that it is reworking queso to be fresh and preservative-free while aiming for a nacho-cheese–like appeal." - Daniela Galarza

Google
Ordered a burrito bowl to-go in person this evening and was disgusted when I got it home and realized they had served me spoiled, rotten lettuce. In addition, I received a shockingly small amount of tortilla chips (maybe 10???) with the chips & guac that I ordered. Very disappointing! This location is out to scam customers. Stay away!

Google
It’s a hit or miss with the protein proportions here. Depends on the server. Today the first portion was literally 6 pieces. I then added “Extra” chicken and it was a total of 10 pieces. Just want consistency.

Yasamin

Google
We had a chicken and sofritas burrito bowl. Mexican food never disappoints. The ingredients were fresh, and the burrito bowl was delicious. The portions are large. The people working there could be more welcoming with a smile.

James Alexander

Google
Great food. Don’t arrive 30 minutes before closing. It post open to 11pm. They stop making guacamole around 930. Then at 1030 they turn off the equipment to make tacos and burritos. Regular occurrence.

Google
I ordered on the app about five minutes before arriving at the restaurant and my food was ready for me when I got there which was way before the expected time. The food was flavorful and exactly what I needed. I enjoyed their new steal meat and will definitely order it again. The place was clean and the staff was super helpful. It was not too crowded when I went, but it depends on the time that you go.

Google
maybe we came at a bad time but we unfortunately did not have a great experience here. the serving portions were very small, except for the overflowing amount of sour cream, which was basically liquid. they also only had one last napkin left in the whole restaurant even though it was only 9 pm. might be a silly thing to point out but with the amount of sour cream each of our bowls were given, some were needed haha.

Google
Great discover for our NY trip. Food is great and portions are big. 2 of us can only finish one portion. Will come back definitely.

Google
Very Rude staff. Order quesadillas for kids. Staff didn’t even heat it. Got the order wrong. Then the manager kept insisting to throw away old order (talk about micro managing). Also we weren’t allowed to use the bathroom!!!

Yelp
Your standard chipotle. This one is just ALWAYS busy due to its location, especially during the lunch time rush. Despite it always being busy, the workers are so quick and get things expedited, so you never have to wait that long. The food quality and taste is standard and what you'd expect from and chipotle. My one qualm is they do tend to run out of a lot of things towards the end of the day. The place is relatively clean but sometimes you do need to clean tables before you sit down. Other than that, it's what you'd expect of a chipotle.

Yelp
Stop by to pick up lunch for 4 of us at 12:45pm for a quick lunch to take back to our place as it was raining out. Luckily I was thinking perfect timing as there was no line, now I know why. I'm a big fan of Chipotle because I think the quality for the value is a good deal. Today however I have to say this is the worst Chipotle I have ever eaten at, ZERO customer service. We ordered one veggie bowl and it didn't even cover the bottom of the bowl. I got a honey chicken burrito, but could only taste rice and beans, we added guacamole to the tacos order but only two of three tacos had guacamole. Even sadder was my wife asked for extra lettuce and the amount on there was less than on a Big Mac. She tired to say something but they just pushed the bowl down the line, not asking if there was anything else she wanted. Waste of $56 bucks!

John D.

Yelp
Smallest portions I've seen at an nyc chipotle. The employees have always been nice but the portions are so small.
google avatar

Bekim M.

Yelp
I ate in every chipotle in Nyc but this is one is the worse I have ever been . The bowl was half empty just because pretending they are busy. Dont go there. cheap ass location.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Your basic Chipotle experience :) Line goes pretty quick, food is fresh! They currently have indoor dining too
google avatar

Laura E.

Yelp
To be honest, it's your typical Chipotle. The customer service was average (nothing really stood out). The ingredients were fresh and portions decent. There were plenty of seating for a Sunday afternoon. I ordered a chicken burrito bowl w/ Guac, white rice, black beans, corn, lettuce, tomato salsa, and cheese. It was good but I wished they'd put a little more chicken. Overall, not a bad location to visit.

Lindsay O’Nesti

Yelp
So so annoying chipotle is always out of ingredients. Put a sign in the door!!! And why do they just never make the vinaigrette anymore?? I go to multiple locations and they never have it "sorry we are all out" at 5pm?! Stop it

Michael S.

Yelp
I come here often because it's near my apt, and I always order the same thing. Two double protein with chicken and carnitas and a single protein chicken bowls. The price changes depending on who is on the counter- sometimes it's $34 sometimes it's $29. The portion is also the smallest you get compared to other locations. So I've asked for nicely to give me a little more because the initial scoop was really pathetic. I received a very nice side eye. I don't mind the price fluctuation but Idk- train your workers for proper portioning?

Maam L.

Yelp
This place sucks! They have a bathroom that they say you buy something and get the pin on a recite and then when you do it dosnt work and they laugh at you after you try it!
google avatar

Lucie T.

Yelp
Chipotle sometimes can be a hit or miss depending on the location. This was definitely a hit at the 34th street location next to the Empire State Building. The food was fresh, delicious and tasty.

Yelp
Mobile order pickup. Love the way they prepared the bowl. Not messy, very neat and edible.

Yelp
"Holy Farting Beans Batman!" For years I've been stubborn about trying Chipotle and my son recently dragged me out to one location and I'm hooked! It's like crack but actually it's likely my unbeknownst addiction to the tainted e-coli content in the meat that keeps me wanting more. I will say the few times I've ordered from this location was online order for in store pickup and I was always satisfied with the portion and value for my buck. I did make the mistake of stopping by in person for a "live" order and what I got was a child size burrito, the same one I order online that was always made massively was now half the size fit for a child! WTF! I thought other reviewers were maybe mistaken about the mediocre portions but they are not. If you want the right portion and best bang for your buck I highly recommend ordering online for pick up but don't order in person unless you're willing to fight for those few extra bites of meat or rice grains! I'm just going to opt for going to a different location completely because the consensus for this location is it's not good and I agree it's just inconsistent!
google avatar

Miranda F.

Yelp
Wow. I wouldn't normally leave a review for somewhere so basic but I've never experienced such quick service at chipotle, much less one at such a bustling location! Place was packed and moved through the line completely, start to finish in 3 mins. These guys have the Henry ford assembly line down for pat

Caroline A.

Yelp
I eat here every day in office and the employees are so nice- I had the displeasure however of being served by the manager today who refused to give me my usual order I have eaten every single day for the past 8 months. Really disappointing that such great workers are led by such poor management
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
Very disappointed about my meal, they forgot my fruit snacks, steaks were super dried and the milk they gave me expired two months ago.
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
It's in the Empire State Building so it will be crowded at lunch hour. Standard Chipotle offerings and the food seems fresh. One of the bathrooms was out of order when I was there so there was a bit of a wait to use the working one.
google avatar

Solomon C.

Yelp
for a restaurant in midtown, the line moves pretty fast. I usually start up a match on clash royale while i'm waiting and half the time it's my turn to order before the 3min match is over. They don't rush you through the assembly line like Moe's or Pokeworks so you get to pick your fillings in a reasonable NY-minute. If you've never been, here's the run down. First you declare if you want a bowl or a burrito with white or brown rice then black or pinto beans. Next you decide what kind of meat you would like: Chicken, Beef, Pork, Tofu Spicy or Mild salsa? Veggie fillings like lettuce, tomato, corn, guacamole, etc... viola! Would you like a drink with that?
google avatar

Cathy B.

Yelp
I agree with some previous review . I think workers have a hearing problem ( maybe music is to loud for them) but if you dont repeat yourself 3 times , you will not get what you want
google avatar

Niya K.

Yelp
I went to this chipotle & I ordered a burrito with chicken and shredded beef. I bit into my burrito & something chewy was in my mouth. So I looked to see what I was chewing on ... and I seen this. I couldn't believe that was in my food let alone in my mouth.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
I don't typically eat Chipotle for lunch especially in the city because I know how crowded and obnoxious it is to line up in that horrendous line especially during the lunch rush which is why when I do crave for Chipotle I opt for online ordering/pick-up - so much easier, but not necessarily quick all the time. Once in a while I crave for Chipotle's burrito bowl for lunch so I would order online and then pick-up. I must admit this is probably one of the most crazy busiest Chipotle's I've been too, like I would never ever want to line up to order my food here. I typically order my lunch to pick up around 1:30-2PM to avoid crazy lines, but still on a Friday afternoon it gets very busy and there never seems to be much seats available. This location isn't just busy and filled with people, but it's also quite messy especially near the fountain soda, sauces and etc. The burrito bowls here are pretty tasty and delicious! However, I do have to say each time I get their brown rice it always tastes a little tough (not sure if that's how the texture is suppose to feel like). Overall, I feel like this Chipotle is okay to come to if you're just picking it up for take-out purposes. However, if you plan on sitting in I would think twice about it.

Yelp
This chipotle is terrible. They nickel and dime you on everything, small portions, $3 for guac, and when you order chips they give you a tiny serving. Never again, even though it's super convenient location for me!
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
My go-to for lunch in Manhattan. It is on 34th street between 5th and 6th ave. There is always a large lunch crowd, so I order online. It is always ready when I get there. I alternate between the salad and the burrito bowl. Literally can't go wrong. I stopped ordering the hot salsa because it wasn't agreeing with my tummy (I would get extra salsa). But the chipotle Tabasco sauce is an awesome substitute! When I order extra chicken, my meals are always less than $13 with tax. Without the extra chicken, my meals are less than $10 with tax. This location also has beer.
google avatar

Saron G.

Yelp
If you know me well, you'll know that I am thee Chipotle ADVOCATE. This location, however, just doesn't match up to par. Yes, it is situated in a busy location so I didn't mind the line, especially during lunch hour... but being busy should not be an excuse for them to have COLD PROTEIN. This was the first of my many, many, many Chipotle visits that my steak was not warm, but cold. Do they not periodically check the temperature? My burrito bowl was inedible- not even a quarter of the way through the burrito bowl, I threw it out. Walk a few blocks to another location because this is unacceptable and not worth the wait.
google avatar

Natalie A.

Yelp
My favorite Chipotle spot, mostly because you can order a margarita at this location. This should definitely be part of the menu everywhere. They surprisingly made a decent Margarita and it went really well with your meal. It's not a bad way to start off your night and you get a nice meal before heading out. The spots pretty busy, especially at lunch, but otherwise it's standard Chipotle line waits.
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
This Chipotle is located on the north east side of the Empire State Building next to Heartland Brewery. There is only one entrance and one exit from outside- cannot enter Chipotle from inside the Empire State Building. Chipotle, the infamous chain of Mexican burritos, tacos, and salads the size of my feet, never fails to disappoint, but the line does in this Chipotle in particular. During lunch time it is flooded with tourists and the wait is around 5 minutes. The employees are diligent and pass orders down the assembly line as fast as they can. Note both times I've been here they skimped out on rice so I asked for extra rice which is no charge. The taste is indifferent from any other Chipotle and I will find myself here again for a quick lunch most likely not during lunch time to avoid the rush.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Chipotle is my life! This is always a good choice for my lunch break. They offer mobile ordering so you can avoid the long lunch rush hour lines. The staff is friendly. My food is always hot and fresh waiting for me.

Yelp
What kind of chipotle runs out of forks and chips, one star. Be prepared and run your business better.

Amber J.

Yelp
This place is mad nasty they didn't even clean the line and a girl asked for guacamole but it was empty and the girl didn't listen and kept scooping for more. The poor girl has to pay 4 dollars extra for guacamole. shawty didn't even clean the line like df they need to work on that shit please and thank you. Very unsanitary, will not return ever again. Horrible customer service.

Tara R.

Yelp
Made a web order in advance, it's not done when I get there at the time stated. I actually waited in line to order it normally and get it faster, but the lady told me I had to wait. They served other people first and ran out of ingredients telling me I had to wait 10-15 minutes for it-wtf? The online order was late and they wanted me to wait extra. Don't bother with this location

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I work in Victoria secret and came on my lunch break and I have to say this visit was very disappointing. I'm six months pregnant been on my feet all day and just wanted a good meal. When I came in no white rice no steak. I was told 2 mins for the steak five mins past still no steak. Come to find out two other customers were already waiting and they told me they'd been waiting 7 mins already which means they just lied about timing. Finally the white rice comes and I'm excited, I settled for the carne asada spent my whole break waiting so didn't get a chance to eat it right away. I finally get to take a few bites and the rice is UNDERCOOKED like HARD. What pregnant person wants to eat hard rice?! I'm so mad haven't eaten since breakfast and my meal is completely ruined. I doubt I will be returning any time soon for lack of customer service and food delivery.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
I'm going give 1 star for this location. #1. Customer service - very rude, unprofessional and not pleasant ppl. #2. Cleanliness - tissues were everywhere. Tables were dusty. I'm not sure if they hired cleaning person before open this place. #3. Amount of my order wasn't the same like other places. Very small. I don't think I'll be back and recommend this location for others.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
When you need a bite to eat and you don't feel like trying something new, Chipotle is always there to satiate your craving. Choose from a bowl, burrito, salad, or 3 tacos. The rest works like an assembly line: rice, beans, fajitas, your choice of meat (chicken, barbacoa, carnitas), sour cream, cheese, salsa, corn, guacamole (extra charge), and lettuce. Lunch rush hour can get a bit hectic with long lines but it goes by pretty fast. Thank you Chipotle for always being there when I need you the most.
google avatar

Jonathan N.

Yelp
Chipotle rules. Everybody knows that. There's nothing quite like eating a 5-pound brick of delishiousness for lunch. But I made a discovery today that makes Chipotle even awesomer. Yes, I know that's not a real word. But trust me, it fits. Here's why... You can COMPLETELY skip the line if you simply order online and then go in to pick it up! I mean walk right up to the register, grab your bag, and walk out. If you pay online, that's all there is to it. AMAZING! I ordered for three people (including myself) at work, and each order was perfectly done and labeled so there was no "I think this might be your chicken and that you have my steak" moment. I will never again wait in the long line at Chipotle, unless it's an impulse purchase, I guess. Burritos are great. No waiting for burritos makes them even better. Hooray!
google avatar

Vineet S.

Yelp
Quick and nice service as always. There is plenty of room for the patrons. One might encouter a long line during the weekends. I love the Guacamole at Chipotle.
google avatar

Jaime L.

Yelp
I am obsessed with Chipotle tacos. I could eat them every day for lunch and still not get sick of them. Some weeks, I do just that! The chicken is all white meat, flavorful, and well cooked. You won't get that fatty, grizzly, multi-colored chicken here. The chips are crispy and light and salty; never stale-tasting. Also, the tacos always stay crispy even after I carry them back to the office. They have such fresh and flavorful ingredients that I feel like I'm eating healthy and always feel satisfyingly full. My favorite thing to do at Chipotle is order the kids taco kit. It comes with two crispy tacos with a choice of meat and two toppings. You also get a side of rice, a side of chips, and a small drink. For $5. It's INCREDIBLE. Ever since I've found this option, I don't go anywhere else for a quick lunch. I just hope they don't start cracking down on 'big kids' who enjoy small and affordable lunches.
google avatar

Diana B.

Yelp
Like all the others: good food, a bit noisy and crowded. This one is IN the Empire State Bldg. but not overtouristed (at least not after lunch hour).
google avatar

Denisa R.

Yelp
I absolutely love Chipotle every now & again since it's one of those places where you can get a delicious meal and be stuffed for the rest of the day. This specific Chipotle is located on 5th avenue and 34th street, right by the Empire State Building. Thus, it is usually packed during the usual lunch rush and almost any other time by tourists and locals, alike. If you're there for the lunch rush, then do yourself a favor and order online so you can simply go to the front and pick up. I've literally wasted a about a half an hour standing on that ridiculously long line to order my favorite, burrito bowl. Service is nice and quick (once you've reached the front of the line), the place is clean, and there's usually a spot for you to sit. No complaints here!
google avatar

Yelp
The worst chipotle location ever, and I love chipotle! I own CMG stock! The staff are like robots that don't listen. Me: I'd like a bowl to go with brown rice please. Server: for here or to go? Me: to go, with brown rice. Server: White or brown? Me: brown rice. Server: Black or pinto? Me: black beans with chicken. Server: pinto? Me: Black beans with chicken. Server: any meat? Me: Chicken Server: mild, medium or hot? Me: tomatoes and corn please. Server: (adds tomatoes to my bowl) cheese? Me: no thanks, may I have some corn and lettuce? Server: sour cream? Me: no, just corn and lettuce Server: (finally gives me corn) sour cream? Me: no thanks, just lettuce. Cashier: chicken bowl? Any chips or soda? Me: large soda please. Cashier: (rings me up takes my money but doesn't give me a cup for my soda). Me: may I have a cup? Me: can I get a cup for my soda? Cashier: (hands me a small soda cup). Me: I ordered a large soda. Cashier: ( puts a large soda cup upside down on the counter that is smeared with sour cream, cheese, lettuce and who knows what else?) I will never come here again, even though I live a block away.

Yelp
Only stopped in here so that I can get a post-gym meal before 9pm. I order the same thing every time, and pay the same price, and enjoy my bottle of water....boring? Nope, I like my routine The staff at this location (I don't know if its due to the time of day) seem to not care about the food preparation or customer service aspect of the job. On the two occasions I visited this establishment my meal was either on the salty side, didn't have sufficient seasoning, the person helping me opted to joke with a colleague than serve me my meal, or the register mixed up my order...fun times. It goes without saying that they will no longer see any greenbacks from me. It's sad that they care so little and charge so much.

Yelp
Chipotle is the best fast food establishment, most brilliant concept and freshest ingredients created by Heaven to serve the Earthlings. I love this place and I always crave Chipotle's chicken fajita burrito at the very least once a month. You can't beat its Best price, best quality, best/fastest service, best quantity/quality for price, Ever (yes I'm repeating myself). It's that amazing that I even listed this under as my last meal I'd want in my Yelp profile. Sometimes I can't even finish my burrito, yet it's so very affordable. I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you so freaking much Chipotle. And I love you even more for the fact that no matter where I may go, whether it's Pennsylvania or Virginia or DC, I know that when in doubt of the food choices in those unfamiliar locations, and when I don't have access to Yelp, I can always rely on you to be there for me and be that comforting tasty goodness.

Yelp
It's a Chipotle. In the Empire State Building. The bathroom code is on your receipt so don't crumple that up! I've always thought the line moves quickly here and I like this location often pilots new offerings and ingredients from Chipotle. There is limited seating but most people are just here to grab a quick bite and tables turn over quickly. Consistent with other Chipotle locations and bonus - open pretty late.
google avatar

Brooklyn R.

Yelp
You can't really go wrong with a bowl the size of my head that feeds my daughter and I when I'm running tight on cash. I love Chipotle! Bring one to bed stuy! Lol yeah right.
google avatar

Shane M.

Yelp
Decent with there Mexican food selection but not on the same level as a typical chipotle chain. Quick moving but not a lot of seating. Better selections around the area Ok for quick food Men's bathroom code 4292

Yelp
The ladies working begin the counter were awesome. Got me fresh rice, fresh everything! Location is really bad, very touristy, but hey I live here and if you are out of town this is good alternative to ghettoooooo food you see else where. Oh, and they have free bathroom...for both men and women!

Yelp
I have a longstanding hatred of Chipotle. But, I was down on 34th Street for a work presentation about the magic of iGoogle, and I randomly bumped into an awesome librarian from the Bronx: Nilda L. So she was all, "Want to go to lunch?" No one EVER ASKS ME THAT. So I was like, "Sure!" And she was all, "I'm going to Chipotle!" And that's when my heart sank inside my chest. At around 1:00 PM, this location had a LINE. It was nearly out the door. It was crazy inefficient. Then some lady came around with a portable credit card swiper to make us pay in advance. EXCEPT - you had to REPEAT your order when you finally got up to the food people. My question is, THEN WHAT"S THE DAMN POINT!? Oh yeah, they just want their money. The options at Chipotle are just horrendous - I tried to get by with just eating a salad and they put some sort of weirdo meat in it. It naturally made me sick later in the day. I really just wanted a basic salad, which shouldn't have been too difficult or hard to get. I also made this clear to the people I was ordering food from, but yeah... I guess maybe not clear enough. I hate this place.

Masha S.

Yelp
I'm disappointed with this location because the service was slow and it seemed like the staff didn't care. Almost over charged me for a chicken quesadilla and one side, (I corrected it because I worked at one formerly). The soda stations and tables were dirty ... however I got home and I find that the bags of chips are barely filled to what they're supposed to be... (image attached) also the chips were stale. Very disappointed:(
google avatar

Betty Y.

Yelp
Your usual Chipotle, filled with people, same food but with efficient workers. Unlike other places, their steak is actually pretty juicy and their chicken is not burnt. Their proportions are also very nice. I wouldn't exactly call their tables clean...but that's not entirely their fault. They also tend to stay open past their closing time.
google avatar

Nia M.

Yelp
I usually stop at this chipotle as my school is on the same block making it convenient. This past Monday I had eaten there and I've been sick ever since! Going to the bathroom and vomiting, I just hope it passes soon.

Yelp
As mentioned this location is in the ESB, it's actually on the 34th St. side right next to Heartland Brewery. Having tried Chipotle during a recent trip to FL we were looking forward to stuffing our faces with their big ass burrito's. This location is super busy during lunch but they keep the line moving pretty quickly. The end of the line was basically at the door when we got there but we were giving our order in less than 5 min. There aren't many tables so be prepared to take it to go or stand at the bar located at the front of the restaurant. On this trip we got lucky and found a table for the 3 of us with no waiting. We went with one chicken and one steak. Last time we had Chipotle we bought tacos for our DD but she found the meat "too spicy" (her words not mine). So this time we thought we'd give her some of the rice out of one of our meals... strike 2. She was thoroughly enjoying her chips and salsa when the lady who keeps the tables clean came up and tells us about the kids menu (which is otherwise nowhere to be mentioned) she hands us a kids menu card and offers to get us a cheese quesadilla for the little one, which happens to be one of her fave foods!! A few min. later she arrives at our table with the quesadilla free of charge. Thank you Mrs. Chipotle lady, you really made our little girls day! This has to be the best meal that $7 can buy anywhere in NYC!!
