Cele Store Featured in ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Is Closed | Eater Austin

"A Korean restaurant that expanded to Austin (1200 W Howard Ln., Windermere) from existing outposts in Carrollton and Plano, it highlights Sundubu jjigae as its signature dish — a spicy tofu stew with mushrooms, zucchini, onions, and carrots flavored with Korean chili paste and flakes and customizable to your preferred heat level. The shop also offers all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue (listed at $32.99 per adult and $22.99 for kids), plus à la carte items and special combo options." - Courtney E. Smith

The seafood soft tofu with galbi here is a must-try! My food came out fast, and the service was so friendly. Since I can't handle too much spice, I asked the staff for a recommendation. I went with the 'regular spicy' level, which was perfect for me. I will definitely be back whenever I visit H Mart. Thank you for the great meal!

I got a tofu soup here! I checked with the lady whether it’s a vegetarian one and the lady said yes but I think the broth is beef based… it was tasty but I can smell the animal flavors hopefully they can make it with veggie broth and that’ll be good! They given you a good portion of rice and seaweed as well!

GALBI is my #1 favorite. ❤️ Always great. Amount is just right for my big tummy😅 #2 Seafood soup is my regular everyday soul food. It’s a little embarrassing thing to finish every thing and every pieces of all the side dishes. But I just dig in as Korean. It’s that good. We worship eating 😁 #3 Bulgogi Jabchae was soooo good and it was double amount than usual. I had to pack the rest of the Jabchae. I feel like I ordered for to go and for here too. Double the happiness☀️😜🤩 If you like glass noodle and want to save some money, bulgogi Jabchae is the golden menu.

Google
Chodang Soft Tofu Shop never disappoints. The tofu stew was super flavorful and delicious. What made the visit even better was the service especially from the young lady working there. She was so friendly, helpful, and attentive the whole time. Definitely recommend this place!

UPDATE - horrendous service, tried to give this place a second chance by ordering a hot stone beef bibimbap. It took 30 plus minutes to get my food, other food court restaurants serve food in under 10 minutes. In addition, I watched them place a 15 minute break sign out WHILE there were active customers in line that were there well before the sign was placed. I had this happen to me before and we waited 30 minutes before giving up and going somewhere else. The cherry on top? The bibimbap was not that great, a soggy and oily mess. SKIP THIS PLACE and walk over to Narrow 512. Ordered the kimchi tofu soup with pork and egg. Also tried the combo bibimbap with seafood tofu soup. Both came with a set of three banchan. Kimchi tofu soup- Mostly tofu, hardly any kimchi for specifically ordering kimchi jjigae. Soup flavor was rich and packed with umami. Egg turned out perfectly jammy. Bibimbap- Had a variety of vegetables but most were lacking in seasoning. Good portion. Note- it looks like only the hot stone bibimbap has bulgogi. Seafood Tofu Soup- Had crab, calms, mussels, and shrimp. Bold flavor with the variety of seafood again heavy on the tofu. Banchan- Pickled cucumber items were pretty bland only the daikon was truly pickled. I’ve had better tofu soup and bibimbap but the portions were filling for one and reasonable for the price. Average Korean food offered in the Hmart food court.

Google
Chodang Tofu & BBQ with new ownership. Receptionist is very kind and friendly. Food quality is acceptable. Food price is overpriced for what you pay. Portion of food is smaller than other similar restaurants. Rice on a combination menu is small as well as the meat that comes with the Tofu stew bowl. I definitely believe food portion is too small for $32 Tofu & Korean Galbi bbq combo i paid. Rice size is as small as the instant microwavable Rice bowl and it tastes the same. Would I go back and eat there again? Not for that price. I think there are better options in this food court.

Google
I do not recommend this place. Please don’t come here if it’s your first time trying Korean food. The tofu soup was the worst I’ve ever had—completely lacking the flavor a proper sundubu-jjigae should have. The bulgogi was extremely sweet; I couldn’t even take a second bite. No wonder they have such low ratings. The food was unpalatable... The best-tasting thing was the packaged seaweed that came with the meal—and they can’t mess that up.

Google
Food was good but the young lady at the register was rude. No customer service, no hello, just a blank stare. She also grabbed the beeper from me when I came to pick up my food. Probably won’t be returning. There are plenty of other food options in the food court. 😊

Yelp
A group of us traveled from San Antonio to Austin for a Tssty Trade event and decided to go to Hmart for lunch. Several of us decided to order from Chodang Tofu & BBQ. I had the Japchae, Andrea had Bibimbap, and Aris had Beef Bulgogi. Everyone enjoyed their dishes and the portions were huge. So much food that we needed to bring home leftovers. If you're in Hmart, check them out.

Yelp
I came back to try the pork bulgogi set and it was just as good as the beef ribs. I love this place so must I'm planning to eat here at least twice a month now. The soup is soooo warming in this weather.

Yelp
Tried Chodang Tofu & BBQ for the first time after being a Narrow Street loyalist at Hmart. I ordered the beef japchae and while it seemed a bit pricy at around $20, the portion size was very substantial (also came with a large serving of rice and typical side dishes) and I was able to have plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day. The beef was very tender and the noodles cooked perfectly with a very tasty sauce that tied it all together. My friend ordered the bulgogi and was equally satisfied. The wait to get both orders was less than 10 minutes. Would definitely recommend and will be trying more on their menu soon!

Yelp
Presentation wise was great. The tofu stew was a bit disappointing. I have been craving this for a few weeks now and so I decided I'd pop in to try this spot since it was somewhat close. The stew flavor tasted watered down. I asked for it to be spicy which it really wasn't. The sides it come with seemed pointless to me. No fish cake, kimchi, or pickled cucumbers. They also give you a thing of seaweed which I didn't understand what it was for. I didn't finish it. I ate about 75% of it before tossing it. It was not bad but it was not what I truly wanted.

Yelp
Chodang Tofu & BBQ replaced the old So Gong Dong Tofu & BBQ that was our previous go-to place for soondubu, and we are absolutely ecstatic because Chodang is actually a huge improvement over the old soondubu place. FOOD: We ordered two seafood soondubu, grilled mackerel and seafood pajeon. * Soondubu: I get the medium spicy & my husband gets the very spicy one. The spice levels are great for both bowls. Initially it had less depth of flavor than we normally prefer but my husband had a grand idea of putting the provided seaweed snacks into the soup. It was a revelation! It completely changed the flavor profile into a much more layered one, which we thoroughly enjoyed! * Mackerel: Perfectly cooked * Seafood pajeon: This is incredibly done! Packed with seafood, crispy edges & flavorful. The cashier forgot to provide us with the dipping sauce, which was the only flaw of the entire meal. Otherwise, everything we ordered is a step above in flavors & quality from the old soondubu shop that Chodang replaced. SERVICE: This is counter service - the cashier was nice but not overly so. AMBIANCE: This is essentially a food plaza shared with other restaurants in the building. It can be loud in weekends & sometimes there are live performances, which may or may not be your jam. Do with that what you will. This is now our go-to soondubu place!

Yelp
Chodang is located in the hmart food court and they specialize in soondubu and hot plates. I got the ginseng chicken. It was aromatic and the chicken was tender, and the stock was hearty. The soup comes with salt to adjust to your liking, but I have a preference for clean light foods. Overall, nice spot and the staff were super friendly and helpful, and the soup was very healing and rejuvenating!

Yelp
Not to be confused with the similarly named restaurant in North Austin, this is a tiny stall in H Mart in Lakeline. Only open for 2 days now, the menu may not look overtly veg-friendly, but if you just ask, they can make a vegan soft tofu soup (soon dubu) and mushroom kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), plus of course the usual vegetable bibimbap, sans egg. Emerging from the compact kitchen blisteringly hot, the bubbling stoneware bowl of spicy tofu goodness is everything I've been craving. I got the mushroom version which was rife with beech mushrooms, both brown and white, and of course creamy, soft bean curd. They can adjust the heat level to taste, and if you want to go out in a fiery blaze, they do not mess around.

Yelp
To be honest, we came to hmart for dinner the day before Chodang's grand opening. And we came back again just to try it, because we love soondubu! And I'm so glad we did. This may be my new favorite spot in Austin for tofu stew. They have so many different iterations, even beyond the typical seafood, beef, etc etc. But as our first time here, we had to try the beef tofu stew at regular spice level. The workers were so nice, and we got a free little mochi plate for the grand opening. And the price is a lot better than most other places. With tax, it came out to less than $17 whereas most other places are around $17 $18 pre tax. And when our food came, I was not expecting the whole set! It had three sides: fish cake, beans, and spicy cucumber, an egg, a bowl of rice, and a pack of seaweed. It was all so delicious, there was a good amount of meat, and the sides were really refreshing. The only thing I would have changed is probably getting the spicy level of spice instead of regular because it was barely spicy. If you can't handle spice, regular will definitely be tolerable for you! It has enough to give it color, but there really isn't much heat.

Yelp
We ordered a stone pot spicy pork bibimbap and ham & sausage soft tofu stew. I'd never tried the ham & sausage soft tofu stew but it was surprisingly good, except the ham was a bit salty on its own. The soup broth totally hit the spot! The spicy pork bulgogi on the hot stone pot was also very tasty and authentic. Both dishes were good price & large portion. I'd definitely come back to try other dishes here too!

Yelp
I ordered the spicy pork bibimbap dolsot dish because I love the crispy rice at the bottom of the bowl. Unfortunately, this dish was not that. it was saucier so the rice was not crispy. That was a bummer because that was the whole point of me ordering the dish. The barchan was good though! If I went again, I would try the soondubu because I got to try a sip and that tasted a lot better. I would say that is the move for this place.

Yelp
The BEST of the Korean restaurants in the Lakeline Hmart Food Court. Since all of the restaurants, Korean or not, at the Lakeline Hmart are fantastically good, To have one that stands out among such high level competition is really really saying something. * * * They do amazing "tofu soup with stuff in it". We had two versions - a no heat at all vegetarian version and a four spice rating out of five version with beef. Naturally the offerings came with a lot of side dishes. a) These were the most flavorful Korean tofu hot pots we have had in Austin literally since we moved here. A special call out for the beef version which was some of the tastiest beef I have seen put into tofu in a long time. b) The side dishes are absolutely bursting full of flavor. c) No - if you are thinking they do this with MSG, you are guessing wrong. I love MSG, even though the stuff gives me asthma and headaches. But I will go through a lot if it makes dinner amazing. In this case, no asthma. No headache. Pure amazing taste. They did this with raw ingredient quality and cooking quality. d) Frankly, Cho Dang is a destination restaurant. I would take out of town guests from a place that does not have good Korean food to Cho Dang in H Mart rather than to the have-their-own-building sit-down Korean restaurants that can be found all over Austin and Cedar Park. H Marts don't exactly have elegant dining ambience. (You would not take the love of your life to the H Mart food court in order to propose.) But in my opinion, restaurants are about the food, the food, and then for excitement, the food. And we could always go to Tous Les Jours or 85 Degrees for dessert.

Yelp
Just OK food, small portion and expensive. We ordered a combo of tofu soup (seafood) and galbi for $31 (including tax) and it was not to our expectation at all. The tofu soup tastes very different than what I'm familiar with at multiple great Korean restaurants specialized in tofu soup approved by my Korean friends in cities with large Korean/Asian population, such as LA, Houston, Dallas, Northern VA. Seafood is very minimal in the soup. There are some tiny clams, 3 mussels, a piece of crab which barely has any meat. Galbi comes in a tiny portion of 4 small pieces, which is not worth the extra price in the combo at all. A couple pieces have super big bones which leave us with tendon and barely any meat. Marinade is more on the sweeter side. The combo comes with a bag of roasted seaweed and a bowl of white rice. The pictures on the menu shows that they have a full banchan of 5 dishes in decent size. However, we only got 3 in super small portion. I guess the full banchan shown on pictures is meant for a sit-down restaurant, not a stall at a food court. If that's the case, they should show what's truly served here. Otherwise it's often misadvertisement. This is such a steep price for a food stall at a food court inside a grocery store, especially the portion is so small and the food is slightly below average.

Yelp
excellent kalbi ribs. great chops! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Yelp
I have visited many times since my first review. Unfortunately, the place has gone downhill. The fantastic flavoring and attention to detail that they nailed at their opening are gone. My significant other ordered the spicy pork barbecue. It was just overly sweet without a whole lot of spiciness or the original smoky dimension that blew our socks off on our first visit. I decided to try something different - their chicken with ginseng soup. Not the best I've ever had but passable. The thing that infuriated me was the small plastic teaspoon that they handed me for my soup. When I asked for a larger soup spoon, the cashier said they didn't have any. For a place that sells so many soups, how could you give customers a tiny teaspoon? If the food was absolutely amazing, I might put up with it. We're going to loo for a new go to.

Yelp
I have had authentic "kalguksu" all over South Korea over the years, and I have recently eaten it at this restaurant in the food court of H Mart in Austin (183 North). I have to say it is excellent and matches the flavor of the dish overseas. I have had it twice here, and I will continue to eat this great dish. I highly recommend the restaurant and all of its authentic dishes.

Yelp
Confusing menu...no prices...when I ordered a bowl from a picture...all veggies/tofu, no meats...it was over $30...for what seemed like a $12-15 serving, in today's prices...used to be $8-10 ;-). Food didn't have any flavor. Had 1 super spicy red sauce and nothing else...no soy, ginger, salt/pepper nothing. And no drink with the meal? Guess that's what you get for a little over $30 here? They were very nice people!

Yelp
Absolute best seafood tofu soup in town. This is the first one I ever tried and it hit the spot, I spent several months trying other spots around Austin and nothing else ever came close taste wise! If you like soft tofu soup you must try this place pick spice level - spicy! Fast service and lively ambiance.

Hangyeol J.

Yelp
This was the most authentic Korean-style soon tofu stew I've had in Austin! I ordered the soon tofu stew & Galbi combo and shared it with my kid, the portion was just right for us. The broth had such a deep, clean flavor, and the galbi was tender and delicious. I'm definitely coming back!

Yelp
So happy with this meal, i love it when they serve a fried fish as a side dish and also a pack of seaweed to wrap with your rice. I'm very satisfied.

Ash Q.

Yelp
We paid 20$ for the beef with glass noodles there was barely any beef in it it did came with sides and the taste was good but it's not worth the price.

Yelp
Hot Stone Squid was the best food I ever ate. It was perfectly spicy and crispy. My mom ordered Seafood Soft Tofu but she requested only shrimps. Somehow they misunderstood her. They provided beef soft tofu which my mom cant eat. She decided to bring it back and changed to correct one. They still gave her wrong one (Mixed Soft Tofu contains beef) again. She ended up to remove beef meats out from it. I felt bad for her.
