The 8 Best Restaurants in Taos, New Mexico - Eater

"The “bean” Chokola is talking about when it promotes “bean to bar” isn’t coffee, it’s cacao. This cozy cafe located off the historic Taos plaza specializes in single-origin chocolate, offered in the form of a hot or cold sipping drink, mousse, bars, and gelato. Chocolates are infused with flavors like raspberry, caramel, and also more experimental tastes — think matcha, rosemary, and chile. Stay and savor or take home a box of chocolates to relish later. Google
Great sipping chocolates - we tried the arabica, French Vanilla. I didn’t care for the Maya but they swapped me with an Aztec and that hit the spot. Also tried the whiskey chocolate torte which was good. And we really enjoyed the chocolate ice cream with a bit of the Aztec sipping chocolate spooned over top…

Google
They have great coffee and pastries. We stopped by for afternoon cups of coffee. Our choices were delicious. We will be back on our next trip to Taos. Highly recommend!

Google
Loved it simply !! The chocolate mousse was delicious and pralines were tasting like in Belgium. It was my sweet oasis in the desert while biking from Texas to Vancouver 🥰

Google
A must do experience for those with a sweet tooth. We both had a sampler or the hot cocoas and the mousse. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Clay Cotton

Google
A truly unique experience with chocolate. I highly recommend the sipping chocolate. The Arabian and Aztec are my favorites!

Google
Chocolate paradise!!! Here, you can find everything chocolate; bars, mousses, cakes, bonbons, drinks. The hot chocolate is to die for!!! We chose two different options and both were delicious and VEGAN!!! We took a slice of chocolate whiskey cake..so decadent! Service is great and the place is warm and inviting. A must visit!

Google
Nice little spot. As soon as you walk in, it smells amazing. The chocolates are fantastic. All chocolates come straight from the source. Very nice vibe.

Google
Came in for the mocha (not super impressed unfortunately, as you can see in the picture it's straight chocolate on the bottom and you can't mix it with the paper straw given). But they get 1 star for the horrible health code violation we observed. The woman cutting the chocolate had her 4-5 year old at the work surface with her who was clearly sick, and we observed the child cough on all of the chocolate several times. I'm really horrified that she would let her child cough all over the food and possibly infect countless people. Viral illnesses can kill children, elderly, and immunocompromised and it is just so inappropriate to put so many people at risk. Honestly the health inspector should be called on them.

Yelp
If I could give a place 6 stars, I would! This is officially my favorite spot in all of New Mexico - at least in what limited area I've traveled to so far. Came here with some friends and were lucky to grab a table. It's small and cozy but definitely worth stopping by, or at least taking your sweets to-go. Parking can be challenging in Taos, so expect to walk a few blocks. I ordered a flight of sipping chocolate, including Aztec, New Mexico Spicy, Arabian, and Mayan. I liked them in that order. Definitely getting the first two again. Not as much of a fan of the last two. The Lemongrass Ginger Mousse and Goat Cheese Chocolate Cheesecake were both to die for. And there's local goods for sale! Chokolà is absolute perfection!

Yelp
The olive oil cake was amazing! Light, moist and the chocolate was perfect! The latte was not the best but still fine. This is definitely more of a chocolate and dessert space than a coffee spot. The service was so so - not overly friendly when asking questions and felt rushed to make a choice. Small space but good amount of outdoor seating. Would go back for the dessert for sure!

Yelp
I like everything about this place, except for the price. Your hot chocolate is going to set you back more than $5, probably more than $7. Ok, this is probably still good value for the quality and care, but still...Ouch. Note, even if you don't order anything, go in for the smells and the education! Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Such a unique experience. It was interesting and the atmosphere was welcoming. I decided to go with a vegan chocolate cake and a cappuccino. Such a great combination. My friend did the chocolate flight. Everything was delicious. Come here to get your chocolate fix!

Yelp
Cute spot that sells chocolates and mousse. You can sample the mousse flavors. And they are all very smooth and a nice indulgent treat. A nice stop after a long day on the slopes.

Yelp
Excellent cappuccino and lemon bar! Bought a few chocolates to go to try later. Don't miss this little local gem

Yelp
No wonder this place has won awards! The quality of their chocolate is fantastic...and y'all know I know my chocolate! I literally visited two days in a row for their Aztec sipping chocolate, because they don't play around when it comes to sipping chocolate. On day two, I left with almost $50 worth of goodies, all consumed within the day because...again...y'all know my sweet tooth! Among those were a chocolate chip hazelnut cookie, trio with the Aztec (a delightful sipping chocolate steeped with 1:1 oat milk and cinnamon, and finished with their chocolate), Maya (I believe this one is water based), and chocolate mousse (the mousse was the real surprise here, the texture and rich, complex chocolate flavor were to die for). I also grabbed a truffle, and a mocha to go. This is not including the Aztec, Americano, and salted caramel tarte ordered on the first day. If I'm honest, I was not going to return after day one (no matter how fantastic the product) because service matters. I'm not sure they see many people like me (I mean, it's Taos, there aren't many of me), or if I rubbed someone the wrong way with my existence, but the service certainly reflected that something was off when it was my turn to order. Instead of being welcomed, I felt the team member helping me intentionally talked at or down to me when ordering. It was a stark contrast compared to how the two ladies before me were treated, and on top of that an immediate shift in behavior from this shop gentleman. This experience is the only reason I'm rating this place any less than 5 stars, and tbh, I almost didn't return. Luckily, the second day brought a much friendlier face (and as a result I spent more of my money satisfying that culinary sweet tooth of mine). That being said, I hope the gentleman I encountered on my first visit is not the owner (it wasn't Javier so I think not). No matter how amazing the product is, service matters. People matter. Sweet teeth come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and shades. :D.

Yelp
A hidden gem, down a side street of the square GPS sent us. Don't give up. We had a chilled version of their Aztec sipping chocolate. So rich, even with milk used instead of the usual ice cream. 5 stars for excellence in a unique category.

Yelp
This place is adorable! We grabbed a quick brownie and chocolate chip cookie and both were so good!

Yelp
Great little chocolate factory. The hot chocolate is very rich. A little goes a long way. It is delicious and worth a taste. The candy is also delicious. All of the chocolate is hand made, in house. The smell of chocolate is captivating! Yum

Yelp
We stopped in for a pick-me-up after driving up from ABQ. The shop is very cute and has some indoor and outdoor seating available. The baristas were super friendly and happy to give some recommendations. We went with some of the mousse (chocolate & dulce), hazelnut cake, bonbons (ginger tumeric/pear ylang-ylang/rosemary olive oil sea salt caramel), a pistachio praline bar, and some espressos to pair. Everything was so amazing - the mousses had the perfect consistency and level of sweetness! The hazelnut cake had a yummy base and then topped with a hazelnut layer like the outer shell of a Ferrero Rocher (but way better)! The pistachio praline bar had a wonderful dark chocolate base and the praline wasn't too sweet - this paired so nicely with the espresso. We saved the bonbons for another day, but they held up nicely and were all delicious - my favorite was the rosemary olive oil sea salt caramel since they nailed the flavors profiles and it made for very well-balanced bites, but the pear ylang-ylang one also tasted like biting into a pear. All of the items are very thoughtfully crafted and I don't think you can make a bad selection here! I'd highly recommend stopping in for a nice treat!

Yelp
Amazing, magical, artistic chocolates with something new and super cool to try! The employees have been helpful and patient as we decide between all the delicious chocolate choices. This is such a neat stop to elevate your day in Taos downtown!!

Yelp
Yummm! This place is so decadent, and delicious! I always get the sipping chocolate 3oz and its a perfect amount or pure liquid goodness for my heart and soul. Quintessential little winter treat. Also, all the sipping chocolates are vegan The shop is cute, service is engaged and there are lots of options of chocolate to buy and then a solid menu of house made chocolate treats including multiple types of mousse, milkshakes, cookies etc. There is always a few flavors of mousse available and I have heard rave reviews from everyone I have been with who has ordered it including, "serving size was spot on. Melted in my mouth. Not too sweet, just right. Lil bit of whip cream was the cherry on top." Perfect central location, wonderful little shop that brightens my day.

Yelp
- tasty chocolates almost too many options - patient staff - small operation - I liked the affogato
google avatar

Arnab K.

Yelp
A lovely place to enjoy some chocolate in different forms and spice levels too. The coziness of the place adds to the charm. The place is centrally located in Taos and must visit if one is not in mood for coffee for some reason.
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
Totally delicious chocolate pudding here. Everything people said is true. That rich, decadent chocolate pudding goes straight into the bloodstream. Love how you can get a sampler of three different kinds of things (not just hot chocolates and not just chocolate puddings). But if you're choosing between one or the other, get the simple chocolate pudding (not flavored) with a dollop of whipped cream and your day will be instantly improved z

Yelp
It's a small chocolat shop in Taos plaza. They have an extensive Chocolat collection including bon bon and mousse. The Aztec is the favorite here which we all tried but my favorite was Arabian with a hint of coffee and cardamom. The French vanilla is also pretty good. The dulce de leche was on point. Try this out for an indulgent warm Beverage. The space is cozy but I did see some people working there. Maybe seating for 10. The place is on the pricier side so be prepared for it

Yelp
What a cool place! We stopped in for sipping chocolate, and found that we were treated to some very special flavors. Options for hot cocoa were available with hot milk at it, but that was not the recommendation of our server. We also tried some of the house made chocolate which we're just outstanding. A cool little shop with awesome flavors. Check it out.

Yelp
This is a MUST visit. An unassuming shop with incredible chocolate and service. You cannot go wrong with the tasting trio. There are even a few tables around to enjoy a treat inside. The space is warm and welcoming.
google avatar

Yelp
A little hole in the wall chocolate haven. Through the years we've tried the hot chocolate's, and everything else. Service is quick and fast.

Kerry L.

Yelp
Love this spot! It's a must every time we're in Taos. The individual chocolates are such a decadent bite. And we love getting the mochas, not too sweet.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
This place has to have one of the best desserts I've ever had! Different kinds of chocolate varieties, styles, and flavors are unique. All the moose flavors were so good! The ability to mix different flavors into one cup allows for you to try each of them. In addition the hot chocolate was amazing as well! I will definitely come here again!
google avatar

Sally C.

Yelp
Cutest little place to stop after a bite for some local delights! The Zia Nopales Prickly Pear soda was refreshing and not overly sweet! Their selection of chocolates, the majority being dark or pure cacao, is extensive. Owners were nice & and welcoming, plus extremely patient as we decided which bites to nibble on!
google avatar

Yael G.

Yelp
The awards and other reviews speak for themselves but I wanted to add my own voice. I can't stop thinking about this place. The truffles and mousse are poetry. Each piece I tried was more perfect than the last. Even the decor is beautiful. Probably worth traveling to Taos just for this one spot.
google avatar

Paige M.

Yelp
Wow, wow, wow. This place is a must if you appreciate chocolate I highly recommend trying their drinking chocolate & they make it with oat milk (yay!). It's rich, decadent and spicy if you want it. I also picked up a piece of their GF hazelnut chocolate cake - it reminded me of a perfected forerro rocher. They had other GF & V cakes / brownies. They had tons of specialty chocolate bars outside of their own. We had been to a few local new mexico chocolate shops and this one takes the cake.
google avatar

Yelp
I had a snow fall. It was hot chocolate over ice cream. I had their vanilla chocolate with vanilla ice cream. They were out of most of their hot chocolate options so I went with the most basic one. It was really tasty. Not too dark. Good sweet flavor. Loved it over the ice cream. A nice afternoon treat.

Yelp
Everything, and I mean everything, in Chokola is worthwhile, from the ambiance, the service, the truffles, bars, mousse, sipping chocolates, tortes, cakes... yummy!!! This is obviously high quality chocolate that can be savored while you sit on the patio enjoying the sunshine, or take it home. Pro tip: always ask for the goat cheese truffle. It doesn't taste goat cheesy but is smooth and creamy and outstanding!

James O.

Yelp
The staff was patient, helpful, and efficient. The cortado and chocolates were fantastic. There was plenty of space for our party of 3 to sit inside and we did not feel crammed. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Disappointed that no one returns your voice message. I'm trying to get the cacao-- Madagassar & Venzuala. Someone in October 2023 did call and mentioned the store was upgrading their equipment. Called in February x 3.... crickets. It's a great little store with different kinds of goodies, but customer service needs to improve
google avatar

Olivia N.

Yelp
I normally never make a review about mocha but this mocha that (I think it was with Arabian chocolate) was the most amazing hot drink I have ever had. The smell, the presentation, the taste, I dream of when I leave Taos and when I return, Chokola is my first stop.

David L.

Yelp
better service and food. we were very disappointed. They really need to improve if they are going to make this. 4 of us all agreed.
google avatar

Yelp
This shop was quite unique and quaint. For a chocoholic like myself I absolutely had to stop here. The service was great and everything was explained thoroughly. I feel like we tried one of everything they offered. We tried the chilled chocolate drink with lavender (I love botanicals and savory spices in sweets by the way). We did the make your own tart with dulce de leche mousse and chocolate. We sampled almost every one of their chocolates. My absolute faves #1 Rosemary (I loved these so much I bought two more when I was done ) #2 lavender, #3 salted caramel. I love their chocolate and I would make a point to go back whenever I'm in the Taos area!
google avatar

Yelp
Love everything there. But especially the mousse is amazing. Totally worth the sugar and calories. The to go place for a sweet treat!!!

Yelp
We were really thrilled to find this place!! Our original plan was to go to Madrid that day because we have a favorite chocolate shop there, but he was closed so we did another day trip to Taos and surprisingly found another favorite chocolate shop to add to our list. There's drinking chocolate, little bites of chocolate to buy, iced teas, coffee drinks - and a mousse bar! We were greeted with a smile from a very sweet (Australian??) woman who told us her favorites. Ended up getting a freshly baked brownie, a coconut milk vegan cupcake, and a small cup of white chocolate mousse with some whipped cream. Their black chai iced tea tasted delicious with the chocolate. There's seating outside and inside but it's a little limited. Cute and quaint little store, we will go back when we are in the area.

Yelp
I love chocolate and I love this local "bean to bar" small-batch chocolate shop. They are decorated award winners from the Academy of Chocolate worldwide competition (in 2020!). Needless to say, chocolate lovers don't dare leave Taos without paying this sweet treat shop and their kind chocolatiers a visit. They have various sophisticated presentations of chocolate treats including hot chocolates, truffles, candies, pastries, ice cream, espresso & milkshakes. As I explored the menu and pondered what to order excitement flowed through my body as if I were in the presence of Willy Wonka himself. We were delighted and made all the happy noises as we savored each experience of our hot chocolate & mousse trio. I really enjoyed the variety of flavors and textures. Next time I want to be sure to grab a chocolate bar or two for the road. If you're thinking of bringing gifts from your travels to family and friends back home, this is a fantastic spot to start. October 2020

Yelp
Have you been to Angelina's in Paris? Their hot chocolate isn't very different. Delicious chocolates, great service. Taos vibe. We are fans!

Karine K.

Yelp
This place has the best chocolate mousse, the hot chocolate is to die for too. The servers are really helpful and always willing to give you sample so you make the best choices. We always come few times each time we visit.

Yelp
*GET THE 'SIPPING CHOCOLATE'* Great gift idea! Local CHOCOLATE available here Awesome customer service Everything is delicious My favorite is the Azteca sipping chocolate. Try the very smallest because you'll be bouncing off the walls otherwise Super cute shop where you can sit and enjoy your delicious treat. Love this place!
google avatar

Annamarie D.

Yelp
Listen guys, Chokolà should be illegal. The lavender caramel is hands down the best chocolate caramel I've ever tried. Made our last stop in here after a day of shop hopping and while we found some great Taos finds on our spring break putting the chocolates here were something else. If the 5 stars and rest of this post didn't convince you to stop in and try their sipping chocolate, truffles, award winning chocolate bars, or decadent vegan desserts let me tell you I stopped in 3 times in a 10 minute span to get their gift boxes so I could share with people how amazing it tasted. Smooth, flavorful, and beautiful presentation! I didn't catch the name of the woman who helped me but she was wonderful.
google avatar

Savannah H.

Yelp
A charming chocolatier with a hip atmosphere and a great selection of chocolate bars, bon bons, mousses, and more. The Madagascar mousse was incredible and the earl grey caramel bon bon was particularly memorable.
google avatar

Scott F.

Yelp
The hot chocolate is essentially a warm bowl of melted chocolate- insanely good. I had the Arabica blend and it was so creamy smooth and rich. They offer three sizes - I had the middle, which was 5oz. It seemed so small compared to your typical coffee shop, but it's so rich that more than this might actually be too much. I won't say it's the downside exactly, but a 5oz cup costs $6. Not cheap, but definitely with it.
google avatar

Bill H.

Yelp
EXCEPTIONALLY DELICIOUS!!!! Very special place here. Best hot chocolate I have ever had in my life hands down! The Aztec, Lavender, and spicy chipotle are my favs. PERFECT location, on a lively alley with street musicians and plenty of seating. Feels like something in France maybe. YOU MUST GO! YUMVILLE !!!!

Kevin W.

Yelp
Ordered four items and received the perfect version of each: Mocha with Aztec sipping chocolate, hot cocoa with lavender sipping chocolate, chocolate mousse with whipped cream, and chocolate brownie. Would give more stars if possible.
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate from here... check them out if you're in Santa Fe and you're a chocolate fan...

Peggy Q.

Yelp
We have traveled a lot...including Switzerland....but this little shop has the best hot chocolate ever!!!
google avatar

Shasta D.

Yelp
Delicious sweet overload, but definitely worth it! Everything is made in house so of course it's made with love! We had a double order of the Trio so we could try everything. We picked the Lemon & Ginger mousse, Aztec Sipping chocolate, Vanilla bean ice cream, Hazelnut Chocolate chip cookie, Rosemary Caramel bonbon, and Passionfruit Bonbon. Everything was amazing and semi sweet. We enjoyed the cookie and ice cream the best. The Mousse would be a refreshing treat. Little tip mix the sipping chocolate with the ice cream... you will thank me later!
google avatar

Hal J.

Yelp
A perfect place for a treat after walking in historic Taos. Chocolate lovers rejoice: if you're looking for a place with chocolate, and nothing but chocolate, this is it! The milkshake was our party's overwhelming favorite, but we did enjoy a tasting menu with chocolate confections across the spectrum: dulce de leche mousse, dark chocolate mouse, chocolate ice cream, chocolate sorbet, drinking chocolate, and little chocolate bon bons. This place has it all! It's clearly popular, but the staff were quick and attentive and it was worth the stop.

Alexis A.

Yelp
Just got a couple pieces of chocolate - the raspberry and coffee were perfection! The selection is unique and definitely would return next time in Taos! Friendly service and cute little shop with outdoor seating

Yelp
I saw "mousse" on the window, and I had to go in. Birthday calories don't count, and I hadn't had nearly enough sweets yet when we went in. It was like walking into chocolate heaven. They make everything on site (omg), and it was cool to catch glimpses into the back with them making all the treats. The man at the counter was super patient while I debated over what I wanted to get. Even though I wanted to get all of the things, I decided on a little cup of white chocolate mousse... but it did not end there. No no. Next there was whipped cream, shaved chocolate, and cacao nibs. It was intense and rich and delicious. It you don't like too much sweet, this might not be the place for you, but if you love chocolate, you really need to go here. My boyfriend had a chocolate whiskey tart dusted with cocoa, and "it was good," in his loquacious words. (I feel like that's a bit of an understatement).
