Best Restaurants for Korean Food and Barbecue in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Tucked away in the Convoy Center plaza, don’t be put off by the Chon Ju Jip’s well-worn sign over the door and straightforward dining room interior. This cozy family-owned Korean restaurant is a favorite in the area. Known for seafood favorites like spicy marinated raw crab and spicy seafood casserole for two, don’t miss out on the jeongol, doenjang-jjigae, or bossam if looking for a non-spicy, non-seafood alternative. The restaurant also serves braised fish and barbecue dishes like beoseot bulgogi with sliced beef, mushrooms, and onions." - Helen I. Hwang

Authentic Korean cuisine served in a setting that reminds you of traditional small restaurants back in Korea. Remember to use newer menu photos on Google Maps as they have changed over time. There’s a cash discount.

Google
Very authentic Korean food, I loved that they had the purple rice option. The soups were cooked in the clay pots and they let me do crack the egg into the still boiling soup. Everything was delicious, although the inside is not very big or new. I did not mind, everything was clean.

Google
A nice and cozy Korean restaurant you shouldn’t miss out on. They have a lot of traditional Korean meal options to choose from. Everything we got was great! Kimchi soup was incredible but was a bit salty for us.

Google
Love it.feels like a friend invited you to eat home and served you a home cook food. Very delicious dishes. Definitely going back there again eventhough its 30mins drive.

Google
All of the food here was fantastic. My favorite was ironically the small side of kimchi stew that accompanied the seafood pancake. Bossam was cooked just right and, when wrapped with all of the ingredients, made for a perfect bite. The seafood soup was decent. We all left very full and satisfied.

Google
A Taste of Korea That Even Your 엄마 Approves (my hard to please 엄마 approved) Walking into this cozy Korean eatery, I immediately felt like I’d stumbled into someone’s home—someone who really knows their way around a seafood market. The scent of simmering broths and sizzling garlic filled the air, a surefire sign that I was about to eat something my own 엄마 would wholeheartedly approve of. The menu reads like a love letter to the ocean, with every imaginable sea creature making an appearance. There’s tender grilled mackerel, briny raw marinated crabs (ganjang gejang) that explode with umami, and a bubbling seafood jjigae so packed with flavor that I briefly considered writing a thank-you note to the chef. If it lives in the sea, they’ve probably figured out how to make it delicious. The real sign of success? The restaurant was packed with Korean parents—arguably the toughest food critics in the world. They nodded in quiet approval between bites, an unspoken but powerful five-star rating. If they’re happy, you know the food is legit. This place doesn’t do trendy fusion gimmicks or over-the-top presentation. Instead, it serves deeply satisfying, perfectly executed Korean seafood dishes that taste like home. And if you leave hungry, well, that’s on you.

Google
It was a most enjoyable experience considering I have not been overseas in in Korea for more than 50 years. It was very delightful as it states that it is family owned and it tastes like family owned food I was greatly impressed with everything that was put before us and it was a pleasure to know this place as an original Korean restaurant. To me you have to know somebody who makes Korean food or you have to been in Korea a long time ago to appreciate what we just had today. It was worth the 80 Mile drive. In this case I believe that pictures will speak louder than my words but I also state that you should try to find this place I do give you this advantage you should show up exactly at 10:00 a.m. . We went on a Saturday. After that 10:00 a.m. Mark you have to go back in the combat mode to try to find you a parking spot. It was very very hard to find a parking spot especially when people are waiting for you to leave and they will park anyway they can to get into a parking spot even with fake handicap decals to get the handicap space. But I would say this is worth the wait and the drive and the time spent everyone was extremely satisfied with the time speed and efficiency of the food when it came out. It has six tables and one giant all the family can come down table. I should have went to that table first because of all the food that I ordered and how it spread out. Again I can't say enough about this place please try and see what you think. I think you will be greatly pleased

Google
I instantly felt like i was back in korea and enjoyed hearing the ajhummas chatting and quickly bringing me corn silk tea and my food. I got the kongguksu because it was a warm day. It could have used more salt and was a little too water based and frothy but I enjoyed the sentiment nonetheless. The banchan was amazing. I will definitely come back and get something else.
google avatar

Lori T.

Yelp
This spot never disappoints. The banchan is always top knotch, the portions are generous, and the service is great. The dishes feel homemade, the restaurant itself is small and unassuming. It's a cozy spot. The marinated raw crab is great, it only comes spicy though so if you're looking for soy marinated, this isn't the spot. The bibimguksu is also great, especially on a warm day. If you're into meat dishes, try the bulgolgi or galbi. I'm not into bulgogi usually due to its sweetness, but it was enjoyable here. Most recently, I ordered the galbitang, the meat was a little tough but the overall flavors of the soup were on point. Solid spot for casual Korean food. It's one of my favorites here.

Yelp
First time having Korean raw marinated crab. I believe this is the only place in San Diego that serves this super trendy dish. As a novice to this dish, I will say I expected the crab meat to be sweeter. All I could taste was the super spicy marinade. You squeeze out the super soft meat which doesn't turn out to be much. The claws seemed to be inedible. We also got the bean paste stew and tteokbokki that came with fish cakes, hard boiled eggs, and ramen. These dishes were also just ok, on the blander side, nothing extraordinary. I'm used to Korean dishes being bursting with flavor and I didn't get that from here even though everything tasted good enough. Small restaurant so expect a wait. Service was good but not overly warm and friendly. Good to try once but didn't wow enough for me to return frequently.
google avatar

Yelp
First thing to not is that although it closes at 9 pm last call was around 8. Like they stop accepting names on the wait list at 8. But don't quote me on time as it could've been earlier. The first time we came here, I think we arrived a little after that and were dumbfounded about this. Finally, we were able to try it. We arrived around 7:30 maybe got seated around 8. It took awhile for them to come over to take our order. Pretty small, but very busy shop. The kimchi jeon was probably one of the better pancakes I've had as it had a little bit of crisp to it. They also chop up the kimchi within it. If you're expecting it to be spicy, it's not. The sauce was extremely salty though. The yakdaejang was probably one of my least favorites I've ever had. The taste just wasn't there. There wasn't a lot of flavor, barely any meat. There was a good amount of noodle vegetable and egg. But the soup just didn't hit for me. The sides - pretty decent. The kimchi is more on the acidic side. But I still liked it. Around 8:30 they gave us our bill, told us they're closing at 9. Boy oh boy did I feel rushed trying to finish eating. Overall, I just didn't feel super satisfied. I'd probably go somewhere else for Korean food to be honest.

Yelp
The kamjatang, the pork bone soup can be shared with two people. The banchan are not good, but this soup was decent. Try jomaru though.

Yelp
Talk about a hole in the wall. This place is great!! Probably one of my favorite Korean restaurants. Their soups are SO good. I've tried a few of their dishes and I've never been disappointed. The Galbitang and Gamjatang-Ddukbaegi are by far my favorite meals there. The Gunmandu is also to die for. I always order this as an appetizer, even when I eat there alone. They're just too good to pass up. This place doesn't look like much from the outside and it may be pretty small inside.. but do not pass it up!! You won't be disappointed!!
google avatar

Bradford C.

Yelp
An absolutely solid hole-in-the-wall. We came here after we crossed back over to the American side of the border before it was time to head to the airport. My group ordered a haemul pajeon (seafood pancake) and I ordered a haejangguk (hangover soup) as my entree. The banchan was really good, be it the fish cake, kimchi, beansprouts, and everything else. The haejangguk didn't have a really dark brown color that I'm used to seeing with haejangguk, but I remembered halfway through my meal that Chon/Jeon Ju is a city in Korea, and this must be how they make it there. It was still really nice, and you could taste the umami from the soybean base, which you may know more commonly as miso. The employees were really nice and attentive. They made sure we were taken care of with our drinks and banchan. I could definitely see myself coming back here whenever I'm back in the San Diego Area.

Yelp
Legit spot if you're looking for hot pot. It can get a little pricey if you're a big eater like I am. I would definitely go back. Love that you can create your own dipping sauce as well.

Yelp
bossam (4/5): very solid bossam, fresh veggies & yummy radish kimchi. this dish comes with raw oysters which is traditional, but not a lot of places do it! interesting combo. kimchi soup (3/5) just okay imo, it's pretty salty but kimchi flavor is really strong! wish i got the soybean soup instead. spicy raw marinated crabs (4/5) VERY sweet, more sweet than spicy. i prefer fresher raw marinated crabs that have the roe and heads, but this satisfied my craving :') very glad i tried but i prefer soy sauce-marinated raw crabs! service (5/5): the staff were korean and very very nice. it was very busy but they are quick to clean and bring you in as soon as a table opens up! expect a wait for dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
Kimchi jjigae tastes just like it does in Korea. This place made me remember the tastes of my semester abroad in Korea. It's kimchi-y, balanced and spicy, slightly sweet, and loaded with bits and bops of pork, rice cakes, and thick juicy cabbage. Service was, chefs kiss, amazing! It's run by Korean people and they even offered to refill our banchan. They also serve barley corn tea instead of water (amazinggg). My sister loved the mandu soup. Ambiance was great, an unassuming interior but it's cozy and comfortable. I'll be back!!
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
Probably the best spicy raw crab in San Diego! It was spicy and delicious and it reminded me of eating it Korean. I highly recommend it especially if you like spicy food. We also had spicy squid and daenjang which were also delicious. Definitely a comfort food type of restaurant.

Tobin B.

Yelp
Quality diminishing over time, e.g., no meat in yam noodle dish... banchan quality poor
google avatar

Nancy F.

Yelp
Great kimchi pancake! Big bowl of bibimbop is good for sharing. Friendly servers. Busy parking lot, be patient.
google avatar

Joann T.

Yelp
In any Korean restaurant, I always go for the galbitang soup (it's my favorite) as my gauge. The one served here was utterly disappointing. As you can see from my picture, it came with 5 small bones with barely any meat on them. It also smelled and tasted funky, not rancid but definitely not fresh. Also found a hair in the soup (I swear I have a curse of finding these in dishes). The side dishes are fine, but won't be coming back. Friendly service though!
google avatar

Mimi N.

Yelp
Flavors were incredible! I am not personally a huge seafood person, but trying marinated craft for the first time was awesome! Definitely hard to eat as expected for a full marinated crab. We went during peak lunch hours on the weekend, and it was very busy, we did wait for a while. I really like the freshness of the pork wraps as below. And the Gamjatang Jeongol had a good spicy background on top of really well cooked and tender meat.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Yum yum yum! Nice service and very delicious food and good portions!!! I'm from Portland and I will be going here every time I'm visiting in the area

Yelp
A perfect dinner in Convoy on a Friday night without a long wait. Parking was difficult but you might get lucky or try to find street parking nearby. The shop itself was tiny! Less than 10 tables but when we went there were barely any customers. My boyfriend and I shared a bibimbap and gamjatang soup. The bibimbap was packed with veggies but we were a little disappointed that there was barely any meat. Thankfully we ordered the gamjatang soup which was able to satisfy our meat craving. Their gamjatang is great but I definitely prefer Jomaru. I also love that there were a ton of sides and they give you barely tea for free. Prices were also very reasonable. The ladies that worked here were also super kind.
google avatar

Tan L.

Yelp
Very good traditional korean food. Don't come here expecting good service or great ambiance; it's a mom and pop shop. best gamjatang i've ever had though, way better than ones i've had in Ktown LA. the meat isn't gamey a and the broth is extremely deep. the side dishes are also always delicious and varied here.
google avatar

Sin Y. K.

Yelp
It's been a year since I was here and I'm finally getting to review. GO SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS!! This has the home cook taste for Korean food and the items that would take forever to make at home. I love the raw marinated crab. Must eat it with lots of rice! BBoosaam (boiled pork) was good with the raw oysters!! It was yummy in my mouth. The gamja tang (potato stew ish with beef) was GREAT! Exactly that home taste for soup! There were three of us and we ate it ALL!!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good, never had bossam and oysters before and it was yummy. Crab was well marinated and super spicy, service was fast and very good. Homey vibe inside and cool decorations.

Emma S.

Yelp
This is an excellent restaurant. I like the Beef Bulgogi and Gamjatang recipes. The food is very authentic, and close to Seoul-Busan flavor. It has a good amount of correct spices, and the side dishes are awesome. Will keep coming back.

Yelp
We stopped by and wanted to eat here on a Sunday morning, but the place was full and there were a couple of people ahead of us waiting for tables . The server told us it would be at least 30 minutes before we would get a table. A busy restaurant is usually a good sign that the food is good, right? We couldn't wait, because we were really hungry. We ended up coming here on a different day. We ended up taking my god daughter here to celebrate her birthday like a week later. She loves BTS, K-dramas, and of course Korean cuisine... so she was excited to accompany us here. We ended up ordering: -(Vegetable) Bibimbap (4 / 5) and Tofu Stew (4 / 5) Combo -Beef Bulgogi (4 / 5) and Soy Bean Soup (4 / 5) Combo -Chicken Bulgogi (3.75 / 5) -Tteokbokki (4.25 / 5) Accompanying Complimentary Dishes: -Banchan (side dishes) (4 / 5) -Rice (4 / 5) Pretty much everything was good as far as freshness and taste. I liked their take tteokbokki (how they added ramen and fishcake). The only knock on the chicken was that the pieces were kind of big and it could have used a little more flavor. The place got crowded after we arrived. We went a little after 5pm. The servers were nice and we got our food in a timely manner. Parking is a pain in this shopping center when it gets busy / at peak times. We will definitely return here. The food was pretty good and we want to try other dishes on their menu. 4 / 5: Food 4 / 5: Cleanliness 4 / 5: Service 4 / 5: Overall
google avatar

Kartika H.

Yelp
first time here and will say difficult to find parking space. place is not that big and service is just ok. for foods: * ban chan: 3/5 ~ all kinds are just sour. expect to have different taste for each kind * seafood soon du bu: 3/5 ~ i should say almost tasteless and not spicy at all. when they serve it looked very hot ( in temperature) but when i ate it not really. may be got cold easily because a bit chill for the weather and the door was opened * la galbi: 4/5 ~ should say the meat is juicy and tender but a bit pricey three stars this time...
google avatar

Leah B.

Yelp
I love their pork bone soup! Service was great, they even helped me load our big take out order into our car. Dining area is just ok, it's not impressive, but I heard most of their patrons are just for take out.
google avatar

Cheerly L.

Yelp
Came to this place to eat after church and let me tell you, this is definitely like a hole in the wall restaurant. The ahjummas who work there are all friendly and quick to help. Once you enter, you get to experience a family/friend owned restaurant and a closer feel as to how it would be to dine in S.Korea. Food was really good and for the price, you get a pretty fair amount. Overall, a really nice spot to grab lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here on a Saturday night and it was a full house by 6pm. We had to wait about 20 minutes but soon after there were several groups waiting behind us. The waitress came out to tell us around 6:45 that a lot to their popular items were sold out including their spicy pork bone soup! We got the kalbi and seafood pancake combo with tofu stew. They offer complimentary barchan, mostly spicy pickled veggies. As many have noted, their banchan tasted good and was pretty generous with 8 dishes. The kalbi was delicious, tender and had great balance of sweet and savoury and not too fatty or boney like most places give. It's part of a combo where you can choose a stew and we choose kimchi tofu stew which was in a small pot but enough for two people. It also came with white rice. The pancake was crispy and had a good balance of savoury and slight sweetness to it plus a good amount of mixed seafood. The service was excellent, super friendly and prompt. They even moved us to a bigger table. It worked out for us since we ordered so much food. There is free parking in the plaza but hard to find with many other cars circling for the limited spots during dinner time. I'd love to come back!
google avatar

Linh N.

Yelp
Great Korean hole in the wall. Prices are incredibly inexpensive for the high quality food and portions. The gamjatang is worth the hype. Can be shared amongst 2-3 people easily. Broth is flavorful, but not overly salty. Pork falls off the bone and is tender enough to be cut with a spoon. The galbi tang is a lot less flavorful, but portion is huge. The banchans are amazing. You can definitely tell everything is made in house and with love. Came on a Monday around 2pm and there was a small wait because the spot is small so I'd presume there'll be a wait on a weekend
google avatar

Krypton C.

Yelp
Food: With so many restaurants serving Korean food in the area, how does one pick? Well, you can't go wrong with this place. You know it's one of the better ones when the older Korean parents raised in their motherland bring their entire families here. The bibimbap was delicious, whether you get the hot or cold version. The bulgogi was well seasoned and tender. We enjoyed the complementary tea and banchan - both better than those served elsewhere. And prices were reasonable here! Service: Friendly wait staff. They were attentive and got us everything we needed throughout the meal. Atmosphere: Home-y vibes to enjoy authentic Korean food. Music in the background, nice decorations on the walls.

Yelp
Besides the food being great the service was excellent too. Our new Fav spot when we crave for Korean Food

Yelp
I was really looking forward to trying this place. My Korean friends say it's authentic and it's their go-to spot. It's a small restaurant and you can't make reservations, so be prepared to wait. You just put your name and number down. We ordered the gamjatang and a pig feet dish (because they were out of Bossam). My Korean friend ordered for us so I'm not sure what the pig feet dish is called, but I can describe it a bit. It's a chewy, gelatinous sliced piece that you combine with garlic, onion, jalapeño, and 2 sauces on the side. It's not a bad flavor combination but I couldn't get past the texture. On the other hand, I loved the gamjatang and would definitely order it again. Next time, I'd come back to try the Bossam.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
The best dish to order is kaejang. The raw crab. Absolutely the best. So flavorful and spicy. Such a treat. Got the combo with daenjang jigae. Good deal. Unfortunately they were out of the oyster so I couldn't order the Bo ssam so I have to come back and try again . Best banchan is the ohjinga jjut. Atmosphere is like eating at ur grandmas. Very cozy and tasty.
google avatar

Vivian D.

Yelp
I was visiting San Diego and decided to try for some Korean food and this place was amazing! Thankfully I came when there was no lines so I got seated right away! Their sides are amazing as well and they were fast to refill the sides as well. The portion with the combo is more than enough for 2 people. We got the combo so it included the tofu soup as well and I have to say it was very flavorful! It's a small restaurant but great place to meet up with friends or satisfy your Korean food cravings!
google avatar

Uracha Y.

Yelp
Service soo Amazing love it here Please bring cash for better discount. I feel I am in Korea . Raw crab meat is a must !!! Very very generous portion with great price!!!!!!!! I will be back
google avatar

Cheska T.

Yelp
Got the yukgaejang and it was the perfect amount of spice! The soup was flavorful and the shredded beef melts into your mouth. I love the side dishes that were given and the food came out pretty quickly! We were seated right away and was always checked upon to see if we were doing well. There's a parking lot in front of the store but also lots very close by as well if you're not lucky enough to get a spot in that lot!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Korean spicy raw marinated crab (#24 Yangnyeom-Gejang) as I've been seeing it all over my social media feeds recently. I googled and yelped and have only found CJJ and Grandma's House to be the only SD restaurants serving these (if there are others please let me know :)) Nobody in my party (3 guys) aside from me liked it. I was the only one eating it as the others each only tried one piece and were done with the dish. I LOVEE anything RAW so to me it was good and spicy. However, my stomach didn't agree with me afterwards... if you know what I mean. It was painful to say the least haha. We all enjoyed their Bossam; it was marinated well and so refreshing with a bite of the cabbage, oysters, garlic, (2) sauces, and all the fixings with it. The #27 Tteokbokki was decent and spicy. The #29 Bibim guksu was not good. The noodles in this were over cooked/mushy; would not recommend.. I would return for the raw marinated crab and to try their other dishes one of these days.

Nadgv N.

Yelp
if I could give 0 star I would parking it's horrible I will never return to this restaurant not even if it's free my stomach hurts I think I saw cockroach near the bathrooms and it's smell so Bad like sewer system it's clod
google avatar

Sydney S.

Yelp
I haven't found a good authentic Korean restaurant around here, and being Korean, my standards are pretty high I cannot say enough things about this place. It's busy so make sure to get there early or expect to wait a bit is the only issue but the service is great and I hope I will be coming back again very soon!! We got the Bossam, and various different soups and we all enjoyed each dish. Their panchan is also nice and authentic. Can't wait to be back and try more of their dishes!
google avatar

Lucy Z.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try the Korean food in Convoy for a while and finally visited Chon Ju Jip. I was looking for some authentic, not overly sweet, traditional Korean food, and this place totally delivered! We ordered the seafood pancake and haemul-jeongol (spicy seafood stew), and both were delicious. The haemul jeongol was huge and could definitely serve 3-4 people. It was packed full of squid, fish, shrimp, crab, clam, oyster, tofu and veggies. So much food for only ~$36! The soup was savory and just the perfect about of heat for my low tolerance (we got mild). Our server was super nice and was always refilling our banchan when she saw they were empty. We left with happy and full stomachs. Note: we arrived around 5:30 pm on a Friday and there were still parking spots and tables. However, around to 6-7, the place gets pretty packed.
google avatar

Elton L.

Yelp
You know you're in the right place when they immediately serve you ice cold barley tea on a warm day. No small portion fufu food here - food comes plentiful as it is tasty. Authentic bossam came with raw oysters. Don't forget to use the accompanying sauce! Godeungeoh-Gui (pan fried mackerel) and galbi are solid. Sahmgaetang was done with a delicate flavor. Prompt no-nonsense service with no frills decor creates a hometown experience.
google avatar

YS L.

Yelp
I go here whenever I crave kimchi stew, which is my #1 comfort food. They have a good kimchi stew. I tried a few other things on their menu and will mostly stick with the kimchi stew here. I would pass on their tteokbokki. The portion is small for the price and it's not too special. If you get the combo with kalbi you get a choice of stew and I definitely recommend the kimchi stew over their soybean stew which is very bland. The portion of the kimchi stew is big enough for me to have leftovers for the next day, so I don't personally see the need to pair it up with galbi unless I'm sharing with the table or have a big appetite. The mandu (dumplings) here are yummy. The banchans are decent. Service is quick and attentive. It would be nice to try the gamjatang or yangnyeom gejang from the pictures I see on yelp.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
I've tried to come here twice before and both times they were closed before their stated time on google/yelp! This time we called and asked and they said they close at 8, so just keep that in mind or call as well. The food was super good I loved the stir fried squid with added noodles (would add a second serving of noodles next time if allowed). The bossam and ginseng noodle soup were my other favorites! The service was great and the server even helped us split the soup
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
I tried the new item on their menu the spicy bibim cold noodle. It comes with one egg and no meat. The slickness is level 3 out of 10. Will order it again. The portion cost $15 but lasted for two meals.
google avatar

Yueming Q.

Yelp
This restaurant is super super awesome!!! I just love it!!! We had a GamjaTang Jeongol, it is enough for two ladies. The taste of this jeongol (hot pot soup) is so authentic! There are big pork bones with a lot of meats on them. The meats are well braised and falling apart from the bones. The soup itself is delicious, it is perfect to match white rice. They also provide several complimentary small side dishes. I highly recommend this place. And I'll come back to try other dishes.
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
Came here for early Saturday dinner around 5:30 and there was a couple of tables available. This is a very home like Korean joint that feels authentic. We ended up trying the Gamjatang-Jeongol and the LA Galbi for two people. It was a little more food than we expected! They also serve iced barley tea which is super nice and refreshing. Gamjatang is $17 and has so much meat!!! The entree side is definitely enough for two people. The broth is super hearty and delicious!! It's not super spicy too. The pork in it is so tender and delicious to eat with rice. I wish there was more broth but I can understand if people want a lot of meat. I highly recommend this dish! The LA galbi was good, but I felt like the portion was a bit small for $24. I liked how it was seasoned though and thought it tasted really yummy. It was also quiet tender. The banchan is a large variety but I felt like I've tried better before. Sometimes you can tell if it's been out for a while. I kinda wish they have less banchan and just increased the portion of it.

Yelp
Chon Ju Jip has no nonsense flavor and service. Considering we were the only non Koreans there, I could tell that this was the local spot for Korean food. The parking plaza was atrocious being shared with so many other restaurants in a small lot. But we camped out and managed to nab a spot for dinner. They don't take reservations and despite hours being listed as 10PM on Yelp, they closed the kitchen at 8:15PM. Upon being seated, we were given complimentary barley tea instead of water. As for banchan, there were: bean sprouts, fish cakes, kimchi, spicy cucumbers, seasoned spinach, spicy radish, fernbrake, and cabbage with ssamjang. The side dishes were rather plain with the exception of the spicy ones. Those dishes brought the heat. =ORDERED= *Yangnyeom-gejang: spicy marinated raw crabs. Rare dish that I rarely see offered elsewhere. The marinade was spicy and sweet, with each crab half being smothered in thick gochujang paste. We were given steam white rice on the side. The crabs had soft, jelly like texture and mild, seafood taste. This dish left us all covered in red sauce so make sure to ask for extra napkins. *Haemul-pahjeon: seafood and green onion pancake. A thicker rendition and came with a salty, spicy sauce. There were pieces of shrimp spread throughout although I found the ratio skewed towards green onion. Not overly oily and had a subtle crunch. *Tteokbokki: spicy rice cakes with ramyun noodles, fish cake and green onion. Super chewy and soft rice cakes. The noodles would be better for those who want a gummier texture. The sauce was on the sweeter side and this was a hot shareable. *Bibim-guksu: spicy cold noodles with cucumber. On the saltier side so I would have loved more vegetables to counteract the sodium. The noodles were well coated and had an excellent bite. Portion size was enough for two people. The egg was notably unseasoned, which was disappointing given the sauce was tasty. Food came out quickly and despite the minimal interaction, we got everything we needed during our meal. Service was curt but sufficient, which is quite common in Asian restaurants. The menu had plenty of Korean dishes that weren't commonly found in other restaurants so I can see why this restaurant has such a loyal customer base. Especially with the strong flavors being offered, I'll be back to share large dishes with family and friends.

Yelp
My co-workers have been constantly telling me about this place and their good Korean food. I decided to get takeout and it came looking quite fresh still. The real question is: Did it taste fresh? The side dishes tasted mediocre aside from the Umami fish cake. The seafood vegetable pancake lacked the shrimp and squid filling it usually had and also was a bit soggy. The tteokboki was by far the most impressive dish at Chon Ju Jip. The rice cakes were thick and soft while absorbing all the sauce. I usually eat the frozen tteokboki at home, so this was seriously a life-changer. The ramen was soft complimented the rice cakes well. Will I come back here? The answer is yes, I will definitely come back and try some more items, as their tteokboki was promising.

Yelp
Lots of food for the price. All meals come with banchan aka small Korean sides like spicy cucumber, soybeans, fish cake, seasoned spinach, etc. I got the marinated spicy pork plate. Meat was tender and flavorful. I thought I wouldn't like the beans in the rice but it was good and definitely made the meal more satisfying. Barley water is served as water-subtlety earthy and refreshing. Great service, waitresses always came to check if we were doing okay. Definitely a short wait during prime dinner time, even on a weekday. Loved this little hole in the wall restaurant. Def coming again!

Yelp
Came here just for the marinated raw crab. It was delicious. The ladies were very friendly and very tentative. It is a small restaurant and you need to put your name down when there are no tables.

Yelp
This is now my favorite Korean restaurant on Convoy!! There are so many throughout Convoy with different specialties but I like Chon Ju Jip for the friendly eemo vibes, tasty banchans and dishes like Gejang (spicy marinated crab) that you can't find in many other places! They made this soooo welll in terms of flavor, decent meat volume in the crabs and amount of sauce. The spice was a bit too spicy for me so I took it home to eat some a little at a time. We also ordered their LA galbi and tteokbokki! Their tteokbokki is on the sweeter side but I prefer that flavor. The restaurant is small so during peak meal hours, there will likely be a wait.
