Google
Food was ok but the Portuguese Egg Tart, is worth repeat orders! Thats the menu item that I’m giving that extra star to rate froyo ✨ 💫 Will add this to my rotation of to-go for groups. Secret favorite… I typically pick up Porto’s Chicken Empanadas and Potato Balls with spicy beef but this is a great alternative depending on proximity or commute route 🏎️ Highly recommend you order in advance and do it through their preferred app, chowbus. I tried to call and also walked in but person working as a cook and handles the counter does not speak English. I didn’t notice the QR codes placed on each table but fortunately had a nice English-speaking patron help me order. To streamline, I asked her to order the best sellers. The restaurant was completely out of cha siu so here’s what I ended up with: Claypot with sausage and cured meat. Claypot with Chicken, mushrooms, and spare ribs. Two variations of the chicken soup with ginseng and emperors herbs. And of course, a box of Portuguese Egg Tarts. In terms of atmosphere, they went for a traditional interior design… see photos below.

This hidden gem tucked in the corner by the elevator in kang kang food court absolutely hit the spot. The rice is so fragrant and the protein on top is delicious. Also, the scorched rice on the bottom of the pot was texture phenomenon!😍 Definitely get the egg tarts before they sell out!!

Google
The food was great. Came here for a weekday for lunch. They are not busy at all. They mainly sell claypot rice with 2 choices of meats. There is also an option to choose daily soup or drinks with cheaper prices that came with meals. I think soup around $5 plus and drink $3 plus. After finish, we get to try their Portuguese tarts, which are quite good. Overall, this restaurant is 1 woman show. She did the cashier, cooking and serving to you. I'm not sure about washing dishes. The only things that need improvements are their bowls, have some stains and no paper napkin on tables. Other than that, their dishes are quite good.

Google
I had a great experience at chong yuen fong. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the service was attentive, and the food was absolutely delicious. I especially enjoyed the claypot with brisket and chinese sausage, which was full of flavor and beautifully presented. This spot is definitely worth a visit.

Google
This is a cute little restaurant that mainly serves clay pot rice and steamed soup. I like its casual atmosphere. This is a place where you can grab a quick bite without having to pay a huge tip. The clay pot rice is made to order and you can choose different meat toppings. The soups are also filled with authentic Cantonese soup ingredients. I like that they serve the soups and rice unseasoned, so you can decide how much salt or soy sauce you want to put in. I would recommend giving more veggies and meat so that the clay pot is filled with toppings rather than looking a little empty. Even if the price is a little more expensive, I think the customers would find it more appetizing.

Google
This place takes me back to Hong Kong based on the decor and menu. For 8 people we ordered 5 different bowls, 1 bok choy dish, 1 soup, and multiple egg tarts. For the claypot, you can choose up to 2 different proteins and add additional toppings like a fried egg. - Minced Pork & Preserved Meat Claypot - Mushroom & Chicken Claypot - Beef Brisket Claypot - Char Siu Rice Bowl All the rice dishes were solid, with the best proteins being the minced pork and char siu. Highly recommend doing the minced pork + char siu combo in a claypot! The char siu was succulent and tasty! Given that the main offering are rice dishes, I recommend that this restaurant offers more side dishes or the option to purchase the meat as is. In fact, we ordered another beef brisket bowl but told him to hold the rice. We saw that another lady coming in who wanted just the char siu for takeout but she left because she was told it had to be a rice bowl. The egg tarts are really good here! The pastry is standard but it’s the filling that really takes it over the top. The prices are SO cheap compared to every other restaurant these days. We even ordered more to-go. The total for 6 bowls, 8 egg tarts, 1 veggie, 1 soup, and a drink was $110.

Google
They only serve claypot rice and a few other rice dishes. But we got the claypot rice with preserved meat and spare ribs. The rice was crispy and the sweet soy sauce was perfect. It’s pretty close to a famous spot we had in Hong Kong. The char siu (bbq pork) rice we got was just ok. The char siu they used was lean and no sauce drippings on the meat or rice bowl at all. The Portuguese egg tart was really good. Probably as good as you’ll get in America. Ambiance: it’s nice and reminds me of old school Shanghai decoration. The music playing in the background was old 90’s Hong Kong pop. Parking: It can be scarce during peak hours.

Google
I recently had the pleasure of dining at this fantastic Hainan chicken rice restaurant, and I couldn't be more delighted with the experience. The Hainan chicken rice here is an absolute delight - it's incredibly flavorful and remarkably fresh. The tender chicken, aromatic rice, and the rich, savory sauce all come together to create a truly unforgettable dish. It's a must-try for anyone who appreciates authentic and delicious Hainan chicken rice. But that's not all; let me tell you about their amazing egg tarts! These little treasures are both affordable and incredibly delicious. I couldn't believe how good they were for the price. The pastry was perfectly flaky, and the custard was smooth and heavenly. They make for the ideal sweet ending to your meal or a delightful snack any time of the day. Overall, this Hainan chicken rice restaurant is a hidden gem, and I can't recommend it enough. If you're looking for mouthwatering Hainan chicken rice and delectable, budget-friendly egg tarts, this place is a must-visit. I'll definitely be back for more of these culinary delights.

Yelp
cozy spot with delicious claypots-- you can't really go wrong with any order here. egg tarts are insanely delicious and well-priced. staff is very friendly as well! loved it!!

Yelp
Really good clay pot rice and Portuguese egg tarts! We decided to try this place out and it was worth it. You can customize your toppings for the clay pot and so we got the preserved meat and Chinese sausage. The preserved meat is like a pork belly that is braised. Overall the dish is flavorful with the sauce accompanying the sweetness of the meat while the charred rice adds a fun texture. 9/10 The Portuguese egg tarts are nicely done with the egg filling that is creamy and the crust that isn't too flaky. 8/10 Quick service and friendly staff and overall decorative interior with seating. Will come back for more claypot rice!

Yelp
4 stars Came here with mom to try their claypot rice b/c we love this dish. But, we rarely ever order it at other restaurants. Not many restaurants make it right...the right way is to have crispy rice at the bottom. And, lo and behold, there was crispy rice at the bottom of the pot! Their menu is limited to specialty soup and claypot rice. My mom vouches for the soup being of good quality, so I'd say it's worth trying if anyone is interested in herbal-y soups. For the claypot rice ($13.95), we ordered the Chinese sausage and preserved pork belly in one and, for the other, steamed minced pork and salted fish. I'd recommend the Chinese sausage and the steamed pork, but I'd skip the salted fish. Also, shout out for the condiments - the sweet soy sauce pair well with the rice and the chili crisps were great! There is a beverage refrigerator filled with familiar and unfamiliar beverages. However, the restaurant is too small to really feel comfortable. It was also pretty hot inside...A/C on low probably. Interior decor was fun to look at. It definitely felt like 1940s/50s Shanghai. The service is just not there. My mom and I were never given water even after the lady AND man asked us what we wanted to drink. Only 1 other table got their water. Mine and another table got no water. When ordering, the lady took our order behind the cash register...I didn't want to shout, so I went over to order at the counter. I'd come back for to-go orders, but probably not to eat there.

Yelp
Located in a inconspicuous plaza in Alhambra, they can be very easy to miss. There is plenty of parking but the signs do say 1hr limit. Inside, there are a handful of tables but it was empty when we came around 11am. You order yourself using a QR code on the table. Their menu only has clay pot rice and a few other dishes, not very many options. They have egg tarts but they were not available. The clay pot rice had the option of choosing two meats so we got Chinese sausage and chicken and mushroom for one and another type of pork and sausage for the second pot. Each pot is a good size for one person's serving. It comes with 2-3 pieces of veggies too. Staff was pretty nice with free water. You click check out on the website and go up to the front to pay.

Yelp
Found this clay pot rice place that opens pretty late (till 10 pm) so decided to come here. It's a bit hard to find but it was located in the corner of the plaza near the elevator. They mostly service rice dishes with soup. I tried out these items. Beef Brisket Rice - It was good, flavorwise I liked it. I would say its like 70% rice, 15% meat, 15% veggies. It's heavily concentrated on rice and there wasn't that much meat that came with it. Still tasty though especially with the soy sauce. (4/5) Clay Pot - IMO I enjoyed this one more especially since everything was boiling hot. You get to choose two different types of meat which we chose Chinese sausage and pork belly. Tons of flavor, but also tons of rice. This one seemed to be more balanced in terms of meat quantity. Would get this again. (4.5/5) I came pretty late so they unfortunately ran out of char siu rice. Service was good and they speak decent English. Price I felt was reasonable at $13.98 per dish. It's comfort food, can't really go wrong. If you are in need of a rice bowl this place suffices just wish it came with more meat to rice ratio otherwise solid. In total it was like $31 for the two dishes so not too bad. Parking - They have a lot in the back.

Yelp
Been here about 3 times now! They it Rice Clay Pot is good considering how rare it is to find these nearby. There's probably other 2-3 restaurants that make rice Clay pot. It is made to order so be patient. For $13.98, you get one pot with 2 meats of choice. I like chicken and mushroom and salted fish. Also spare ribs and minced pork are okay too. For an extra $5 you can add one of their soups which are of the healing type. American gingsen, cordyceps flower or chicken feet. Sometimes other soups are available as well. Overall the rice clay pot is a 7-8/10. I enjoy the warmth feeling it gives me and feels somewhat homey without feeling too saucy or heavy. The only issue is that it can be pretty oily at the bottom but that's how they get the nice subtle crisp of the rice. So it isn't healthy by any means but it's also something I get once every 2 months. Their egg tarts are decent too. Come check them out. Parking easy in the back of the plaza.

The Portuguese egg tart was really good. Probably as good as you'll get in America. The service was ok, they forgot our add on Chinese sausage and then they charged us twice for it. Ambiance: it's nice and reminds me of old school Shanghai decoration. The music playing in the background was old 90's Hong Kong pop. Parking: It can be scarce during peak hours.

Yelp
Nice old Shanghai decor, but unrelated to the dishes they offer... Tastes average, wife did mention the eels rice taste kind of fishy....

Yelp
Came here to try their clay pot rice. It's in the same plaza as the Congee. The opening can be hard to fine since you can't see it from the parking lot. Walk to the far right corner and you will see the entrance. When you enter, you walk down this long hallway/eating area to get to the front. They have a 4 table eating area in the front and then about 4 small tables in the hallway eating area. You can order at the counter or with the waiter. We decided to try out their clay rice pot with chinese sausage and smooth chicken, chai sui rice, and the chicken soup with flower (it was $5 extra). The chai sui was flavorful and very tender. The Clay rice pot had a lot of crispy rice at the end and very flavorful as well. The smooth chicken in the clay rice pot was very very tender. Chicken soup was very bland but the Chef had told us they don't use MSG and gave us pink salt to flavor it ourselves. I also wanted to try their famous portugese egg tarts but they sold out already. Bummer. I will definitely be back to try their egg tarts. Service was good. They have a large parking lot in the back. Also, lots of old Hong Kong style decorations in the hallway.

Yelp
This place has great egg tarts, and the box is super presentable. It's a Portuguese style egg tart so the crust is more like a puff pastry than a crust - which I prefer. The interior was soft, eggy, and just the right amount of sweetness. There are some competitors out there like Phu's and Jim's and this falls just right behind them.
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
This review is for the Portuguese egg tart. The egg tarts here are delicious. The egg filling is spot on with the right amount of sweetness and consistency. The crust was also good. I highly recommend this place for the egg tarts. I haven't tried their clay pot rice yet. I will be back to try that.

Yelp
A cute little restaurant tucked away in the corner of a plaza in Alhambra! Do not underestimate this small restaurant - it has the cutest, aesthetic decor that takes you back to old Hong Kong and has high tech stoves that automatically spin the claypots, cooking your claypot rice evenly and perfectly Claypot rice with chinese sausage and spare ribs: 4.5/5. The spare ribs were so juicy and tender, but had a little too much fat for my liking. The chinese sausage was sliced thinly and so fragrant, just the way I like it! The rice was super crispy and yum. Everything was cooked so perfectly. Claypot rice with eel and minced pork: 5/5. Considering that this costs $13.98, the amount of eel they give is really generous! It was so soft and delicious, and the minced pork was a cake with some veggies inside - definitely my favorite! The rice was, again, perfectly crispy and yummy. There were maybe only 1-2 people working here, so it took a while to get our food but perfection takes time! My claypot rice cravings have definitely been satisfied. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
If you are craving traditional claypot rice, give this place a try! Got here around 5:30 on a Saturday and got seated right away. You order at the counter first and find a table to sit. We ordered the clay pot rice, which comes with two choices of meat (char siu and beef brisket in our case) and you can get a soup (they have a rotating selection) for an additional $5 or get one of their tea for additional $3. One of my favorite things about the clay pot rice is that the rice at the bottom is crispy! The char siu and beef brisket are both very tender and very flavorful. There is soy sauce on the tables that you can drizzle onto your rice. The soup was amazing as well - they'll give you salt on the side for you to add. Tastes pretty authentic! There are three tables that sit about 3-4 and another three to four tables that sit 1-2 so if you have a bigger group, I recommend making a reservation! Staff were friendly! There is parking in the plaza and the restaurant is a little hidden if you enter from the parking lot - it's in a corner right next to the stairs and once you make a left, you'll find it!

Yelp
Parking: in a big parking lot with kang kang food court. Across the street from the hat TLDR: Seating is limited not good for large groups Slow to serve Food lacks flavor. Little toppings Charge for Togo container Drinks are sugary. The restaurant is very cramped. There are some tables along a long hall way and some where you order. The decor is very gatsby art deco with a Chinese twist. The clay pot rice comes with two toppings max. We got a couple of pots to try and were disappointed that it was flavorless. The chicken mushroom should be savory with ginger sauce but it felt like they boiled the chicken ahead of time and dumped the dry chicken on top of the rice. The beef brisket pieces were tiny. The eel was overcooked. The cha siu was basically boiled fatty pork in cha siu sauce. The clay pot was mostly greasy rice with a blanched bak choy. The flavor is heavily dependent on the sweet soy sauce on the table. Without it, it is basically white rice. True clay pot rice flavor comes with the topping. Here it felt like it was cooked separately and assembled together at the last minute (especially if you skimp out on toppings). The drinks are just brown sugar water. We got the cane juice and it felt like sugar cane infused sugar water based on the dark coloring. Togo boxes are big but cost .25 each. None of us finished it.
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
Came for a lunch, we couldn't get the char siu with eggs because they didn't have any eggs. So we opted for 2 claypot rices. The minced pork with salty egg was delicious! The spare rib rice wasn't as good because there's not much meat, but it's flavorful. The dan tats are delicious and sell out quickly! Small restaurant but you can order on your phone which makes it easy! Will come back again!
google avatar

Jeanie L.

Yelp
This place is kind of hidden in the corner of the plaza and on top of that, the cashier is hidden behind a wall too. You have to enter the restaurant through the main door, walk past a few tables that look oddly placed, walk under an arch way, and then you'll see the cash register and menu. I've only had their cha siu rice and Portuguese egg tarts and both are so good. Dare I say it's one of the best cha siu rices I've ever had? They are so generous with their portions. I had leftover rice the last time I ordered this because I was so full from the meat. The sauce from the cha siu goes really well with the white rice. The Portuguese egg tart was warm and fresh out of the oven. It wasn't too sweet and was very creamy. I will come back next time to try their clay pot rice!
google avatar

Alice K.

Yelp
Amazing food in a hole in a wall place. I ordered the char siu rice with the bitter melon soup. It was so tasty, I'm definitely transported back in china. The service was great too!!
google avatar

Harvey L.

Yelp
I came here for the clay pot rice. And on a whim, decided to get a Portuguese egg tart. The clay pot rice was pretty good - rice was very crispy. I didn't like how it got stuck in my teeth but that's probably just a me-problem. But THE EGG TART was AMAZING. Literally the best egg tart I've ever had. Crust was thin and perfectly flaky. I also got the cordyceps flower stew/soup. It was fine, but would not get it again. Too small for the price. I also love the decorations in the restaurant. Service was also fine. Neither of these things factor into my rating.

Yelp
This tiny little eatery has great ideas - you can see them in the wall-covering photos of old Hong Kong (Macaw?) and the collage memoir (16 mini posters, see photos) of old Hong Kong movies. Seriously, if you a fan of Hong Kong movies, it's worth a visit just to see them! They also followed the old Hong Kong tradition of great soups - infused with Chinese herbs, they are supposed to be nourishing and "good for you" - as my Cantonese aunties would say. In addition to soups, they have typical Cantonese rice offerings- simple but practical, most under $15. The Portuguese egg custards are a blast! Melt in your mouth good! And for $13 a dozen, it's a fantastic bargain. I bought a dozen for lunch!! Nice decor - love the retro Tiffany style ceiling lamps. 5 stars for the unique experience!
google avatar

Ada Y.

Yelp
Hidden hole in the wall with really good food! It's easy to miss and you have to kinda of turn the corner and through the decorated corridor to get here. The clay pot rice has perfect crispy rice and was ready in 15 minutes! The meatpie on the clay pot rice was SO thick and not dry at all. We also got a char siu rice- all the pieces of charsiu were the thick fatty ones lol The vibe is super cute here and they really put some thought and work into redecorating this place to have a Macau theme. We were the only table sitting but, we did see quite a few take out orders while we were there. I'd pass on the portugese egg tarts. When we got ours, it was cold, not toasty, and the tart itself was starting to get soft on itself.
google avatar

Diane T.

Yelp
Intimate Cantonese specializing in clay pots and bowl rice delicacies. Owners are so kind and food is spectacularly delicious! Egg tarts sell out quickly so call ahead of time if traveling the distance.
google avatar

Helen L.

Yelp
Came right when they opened and at the time, they only had Portuguese egg tarts available. It was nice and hot, very fresh, and very delicious. They also have a section of bottled and refrigerated drinks to choose from. It's a very small place with a few tables for 4 people to sit at each. You can enjoy your treats there or take it home.
google avatar

M W.

Yelp
BEST CLAY POT RICE IN THE SGV! Very small hidden venue but very flavorful and feels very homey. Definitely worth a try! One downside, they charge 25 cents for containers to go. So, bring your own container!!!
google avatar

Magda N.

Yelp
Located in the corner, in plaza with kang kang food court. Used to be the crepe place. Eggtart is $1.38 each. Cheapest we've seen around town, but pretty small. Soft custard and flaky crust. Need to handle with care, otherwise won't be round anymore! They serve nice and warm, that's why even more fragile. Flavor is not bad. Crust isn't very buttery though. Staff is nice but limited english language. Menu has both language, but the special of the day menu is not so much.

Stacy S.

Yelp
Just a warning for all to double check your totals before paying. They only show a total when you go up to pay. I realized after I was reviewing our receipt back at home that they overcharged us. We ordered: 2 claypot rice ($13.98 each) 2 teas ($3 each as an add on to the claypot rice) Our subtotal should have been 33.96. I'm not sure how our subtotal became 40.96 before tax and tip. Outside of the wrong charges, this place does have a good variety of options for claypot rice and is a good value when you are billed correctly.
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
This is actually one of the worst Portuguese egg tart I've had. The crust was not flakey at all or any good even if it was different. And the egg tart itself in the middle taste like it barley cooked. It was watery and breaks apart so easily, even picking it up. After tax, it was about $1.50 each and I would rather pay a bit more for a better egg tart.
google avatar

David X.

Yelp
Had the claypot rice. Haven't had one of these bad boys since my trip to Hong Kong when I was a kid. Love the crispy rice is at the bottom. The restaurant is pretty low key hidden and totally has this Chinese Casablanca vibe. Service was nice, they provide filtered ice water. Also seems to be a hangout for a few old regulars.
google avatar

Khira T.

Yelp
I ordered a chicken feet peanut soup to go. Very small portion with no flavor. I got only 2 chicken feet in bland brown cold water and two soggy peanuts. I can get 2 orders of steamed chicken feet dim sum for way less than I paid for this. Never going back. Plus customer service is unwelcoming. Order with caution
google avatar

Yvonne C.

Yelp
Okay I'm not sure why my food looked like this and other people who left good reviews looked like that. Maybe cus they ate it at the restaurant and I ordered ubereats? Idk but we def had different experiences. This is pork ribs with black bean sauce clay pot rice. It didn't taste like good restaurant quality clay pot rice. It also gave me a minor stomach ache after. No ty to say the least.

Yelp
This review is solely based on their Portuguese egg tart and creamy cheese tart. They are located in the same plaza as kang kang and several other businesses, so parking in this plaza can be pretty hard, depending when you come. The prices are cheap for the tarts, but they are also smaller than the tarts I'm used to seeing. They had a few small tables and seats, but not good for large groups. Portuguese egg tarts: just okay. The crust had layers, but lacked in flakiness and crispiness. It was just crumbly. The filling was very light. You might enjoy it more than us, if you prefer desserts not too sweet. Creamy cheese tart: as the name suggests, it is creamy. I liked that it was warm, when we received them. The cookie crust was buttery but also crumbly. We enjoyed the creamy cheese tart more than the Portuguese ones. I do wish both were more crispy, but overall they were still enjoyable.

Yelp
Chong Yuen Fong's menu is hugely in flux. Of the 3 entrees on their menu at the time (Macau style chicken rice, Char Siu plate, and Bak Khut Teh), only char siu was available so 3 of us ordered 2 plates to share. The staffer explained that the other two dishes are no longer being served and they were considering transitioning to a menu of Cantonese-style claypot rice. The signature Portuguese style egg tarts were available, as were the daily soups. However, don't really see how egg tarts and soup constitute a meal. On the plus side, the egg tarts were very flaky and the custard well flavored with the perfect, barely set texture. The char siu plate was very good too - with a lot of white rice, well cooked char siu, a nicely fried sunny side egg and some greens. I would skip the soup next time, it wasn't flavorful.

Yelp
Introduction: This establishment specializes in claypot rice and I would say they currently serve the best claypot rice in San Gabriel Valley. Food: Minced pork patty with mushroom & chicken, pork belly with silver fish, pork belly with minced pork patty claypot rice: What's neat about Chong Yuen Fong is that the patrons get to select two toppings from the menu for their claypot rice. My usual pairings are their minced pork patty with mushroom & chicken, pork belly with silver fish, and pork belly with minced pork patty. One can't really go wrong with any of the toppings since the ingredients here are very fresh and vibrant in their inherent flavors. The minced pork patty and pork belly occupies particular places in my heart because they're respectively delectable and excellent in quality. It's hard to come across a good minced pork patty since usually the minced pork patties I've come across at other eateries have bits of joints mixed into them. At Chong Yuen Fong the minced pork patty is clean and smooth in its texture and made from quality pork meat. I like the pork belly because of the slight chewiness in texture as well as its fat content [satisfyingly delicious]. Ambiance: Bygone era retro-vibe. Service: The proprietor and staff are polite, cordial, friendly and accommodating Price: Reasonable

Yelp
Great place for authentic clay pot rice. We especially loved the rice crust that formed at the bottom of the pot. Super crunchy. The server was helpful when we ordered and even let us know the amount we ordered was sufficient. The interior of the store is pretty cute, though there aren't too many tables. We'll be coming again to fulfill our claypot cravings soon~

Yelp
My parents had heard about this new shop that opened up in Alhambra that offered cheap Portuguese egg tarts. They stopped by on a weekday, but unfortunately the store was closed. No hours were posted, so they weren't sure if they had closed temporarily. Decided to stop by this afternoon to see if they were open - and they were! The store was pretty empty, although I did stop by during off hours. It's located in the same plaza as the Kang Kang food court next to where Yogurtland used to be. Parking is not too bad if you don't come during busy hours. There's some seating in the front of the store as well as some tables along the narrow walkway. The first thing that I saw was the display case full of Portuguese egg tarts and cheese lava egg tarts. These tarts are on the more miniature size if you compare them to the standard bakery's egg tarts. Besides egg tarts, they also offer soups, rice bowls, and drinks. Some items are only offered on specific days per their menu. So the only items I tried were the egg tarts. For $1.38 for each Portuguese egg tart, I thought the price was pretty worth it. Egg tarts are fresh and hot - we dug into one as soon as we started driving, and I do think these are reminiscent to the ones I had in HK and Macau. The shell itself isn't as flaky as other bakery's, but the crispiness is definitely there. But that filling - light, milky, eggy. Really smooth; honestly would probably be able to scarf down multiple tarts without even realizing. I also tried the cheese lava egg tart - each one is $2.48. I was a bit let down by this, only because I thought there would be a filling that seeped out the minute I cut into the tart. The crust is a cookie crust while the filling is more of a cream cheese filling. I would say the filling is more on the heavy side and not something I'd crave. tl;dr - definitely will be back to get more of the Portuguese egg tarts!

Yelp
They don't have a huge menu selection but it's worth of a try! Mainly serve different types of herbal soup on each day of the week. They are also known for the egg tarts! Unfortunately, they were out of the Macau chicken rice and the lava cheese tart :( We ordered the soups from the Monday menu, bitter melon soybean pork rib soup and vegetable pork rib soup. Both soups came in a small ceramic pot, soup flavors are very clean and natural. Didn't seem like they add a lot of seasoning! Which is how I like it. Price is $8.99 per order. The presentation of the BBQ Pork Rice really reminded me of Hong Kong. Comes with BBQ pork with side of green veggies, sunny side up egg drizzled in sweet soy sauce. I did wish the bbq pork were a bit fattier. But overall the rice dish was very delicious. The must order and my personal favorite, is the Portuguese Egg Tarts!!! It has a very soft and light sweet egg filling with flaky crust. Just wish they have the Cheese tart available as well! I will sure be back to try it out! Tables are available in the hallway and inside the restaurant. Inside space is very limited. Mostly 2 seaters and a few large tables. You normally order your food in line and the server will bring out the food. Will definitely come back for the Macau chicken rice and the cheese tarts!

Yelp
As a Hong Konger, I appreciate they cooked the claypot on the gas stove. The concentration of flavours from the sausages and rice are good. They are generous with the amount of sausages and char Siu ( bbq pork). If they add just 1-2 pieces more of choy then level up the dishes because of the balance. I didn't take picture of the Portuguese tart, but the custard tastes good. Side note, they have a parking lot for parking and friendly customer service.

Yelp
Husband and wife team pumping out the best claypot rice and traditional soups in the area. This restaurant serves my kind of comfort eat without the msg and salt bomb thirst aftermath. Can't go wrong with any of the claypot combo. Their soup menu changes daily!

Yelp
Nothing felt inherently Macauanese to me, but more so a HK style cafe. There is really only two dishes available of substantial food. And then everything else is really just herbal teas or seasonal Chinese soups. They do have Portuguese, egg tarts and cheese tarts that they will heat up for you. They will not sell you a egg, tart or cheese tart individually. You have to buy it in numbers of two, but you can mix and match. So I got one Portuguese egg tart, and one cheese tart. Although the Portuguese egg tart wasn't bad especially after they heated it up, I think the cheese tart was the better of the two. It basically tasted like a Hokkaido cheese tart. Macau style chicken rice tasted like a fried chicken with a little bit of a curry sauce on top. Overall, they just opened and are severely understaffed and still learning their bearings.

Yelp
New place for rice bowls in Alhambra. Let's just say they are in a soft opening. Expect a wait and your dishes may not all come out at the same time depending on what you order. The menu is very limited, and the soup selection is on rotation during the week. They have two rice, bowls, one with char sui and other with Macau fried chicken with curry sauce. Char sui rice bowl - skip this. Although flavorful, mine was fatty. This has char sui, rice, a few pieces of veggie, sunny side fried egg. Chicken curry rice bowl - get this. Macau style fried chicken is very lightly fried, with almost no batter. The curry is very flavorful, but the dish can definitely use more sauce. This comes with rice and some nicely pickled cabbage. Portuguese tarts - definitely get these. They taste almost exactly like the ones I had in the cow. The pastry is very crispy on the outside, and the custard is very buttery. They are always making these fresh, so be careful not to burn your tongue. I'll be back for more chicken and Portuguese tarts but hopefully the workflow and operations will be smoother as the staff get trained.

Yelp
I've never had authentic claypot rice before. So what better way to start than with the best in the SGV? That's not just my opinion. It's my wife's too. This is a small place with a charming, old-school 1930s vibe. If you come here, you need to get the claypot rice. There are a lot of meat options--all of them delicious. I recommend scanning the QR code on the table to place your order. That way you'll see all the options. Everything is made to order, so don't come here if you're in a rush. They've got some high-tech equipment back there that ensures your rice comes out perfect, every time. Just look around and admire the decor, and before you know it, a sizzling hot claypot of flavourful rice will be delivered to your table. They'll tell you when they serve you, but do not skip their special soy sauce. I don't know what's in it, but it really brings all the flavours together and helps you scrape all the tasty crunchy rice off the bottom of the pot. We had a bit leftover and it was nice to see they have metal to-go containers to keep everything hot. This place should take off as word spreads. Definitely coming back here, assuming we can get a table.

Yelp
Not a lot of selections but some of their food is good. Finally had a chance to order it via Postmates and tried it. We normally get their mushroom chicken claypot rice, japanese terriyaki eel rice, and preserved meat claypot rice. The only thing I didn't really like was the crunchy part of the rice? I know. I know. For some, it's the best part of their claypot rice. But it's just not for me. I couldn't rate service and the location since I haven't actually been inside the restaurant. But I may visit one of these days...

Yelp
Finally visited this place arriving about 35 mins AFTER opening and was told it will be ANOTHER hour before the soups are ready! Don't understand why their limited food menu items are NOT ready to be served upon opening, maybe the staff needs to start earlier or open later. We had no choice but left and returned in the evening. Ordered one of their herbal soups plus a stone pot rice consisted of beef brisket and black bean ribs. The soup was ok, the ingredients inside the stone pot lack flavor. An average meal, good enough for a casual meal but not something one will crave for. Their bathroom, btw, is communal outside the restaurant in the hallway

Yelp

Yelp
This is a very small place with a vintage Shanghai vibe. They played a Chinese song that our parents would listen to when we were young It's a really unique style of cooking where the rotating gas burners cooked the rice perfectly with a layer of crispy burnt rice! And don't forget their special soy sauce for the clay pot dishes. Oh and they also have a homemade crispy chili oil that adds a perfect kick. All of this are at the table. The Portuguese Egg Tarts were smooth and creamy. A definite We came at 2 pm so we had the place to ourselves.

Yelp
Interesting decor. We got the Portuguese egg tarts and cheese lava egg tarts. The lava egg tarts were the standout of the two for me. Price was very fair - about $1.38/egg tart and 2.48/cheese tart. Parking is available behind the store in a shared lot with Kang Kang Food Court.

Yelp
The current opening of Chong Yuen Fong in Alhambra is the strangest thing I've ever seen. Call it maybe a soft soft opening. I drove by last night and saw brightly lit new Chinese restaurant on Valley Bl. near Garfield in Alhambra. I later did an internet search and found the restaurant already had a webpage, which stated Chong Yuen Fong had originally opened up in Los Angeles where they developed a large following for their Hong Kong style cuisine. But as you know I've eaten at most every Chinese restaurant that has been around for the past 40+ years and never ate at anything named Chong Yuen Fong. But I figured that may have been the Chinese name and which operated under a different English language, leading me to believe this was a longtime Chinatown restaurant that had recently closed. For one, New Dragon Seafood had opened in Chinatown in 1997 and shut down during the pandemic, fit the description. The website also described the current location's friendly staff, the aroma of freshly cooked dishes, in a traditional Hong Kong style decor. So today I eagerly went back to Alhambra to check it out. But what I found was quite inexplicable. Expecting to find a bustling good sized restaurant, I encountered an empty small hole in the wall, with just a few tables that ran in a corridor to the back entrance and in the small foyer. Admittedly the foyer had a nicely appointed chandelier and wall decorations. Meanwhile the staff was one nice young man, who spoke no English and as it turns out wasn't even familiar with some of the American coins I used to pay my bill. Oh, and the menu had fewer than 10 items available on any given day. The food was fine, but my overall impression was that I had fallen into the twilight zone.

Yelp
As a Hong Konger, this was the worst Portuguese egg tart I have ever had. The tart shell was extremely soft, almost as if it wasn't fully cooked, lacking the right texture. It didn't hold up well at all. Additionally, the BBQ pork rice was too greasy, and I felt sick while eating it. I hope, at the very least, the BBQ pork was fully cooked. Despite the beautiful and Instagram-worthy interior design, my overall experience was disappointing. The lady staff seemed sweet and smiled at me. I genuinely wanted to like this place, but unfortunately, the food just didn't meet expectations. Perhaps they can improve in the future. 葡撻個餅皮好似仲未煮熟咁,拎都拎唔起身 .. 想拎住黎食嘅時候就散哂 T^T

Yelp
I only tried their Portuguese egg tarts. They're delicious and cheapest in the SGV area. I will come back to taste their soup and rice dishes. The cashier/cook/server was by herself and doesn't speak English so i may have a hard time ordering but she was very nice and polite.
