Where to Find Korean Comfort Food Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Go here for jajangmyeon, a quintessential Korean comfort food that can be found at just about any Korean restaurant. The noodle dish is topped with a sauce of black bean paste, meat and vegetables. Slurping these noodles is worth every bit of splatter." - Hanna Nakano

Google
It was my first time visiting this place, as a family member had recommended it. The atmosphere is typical of an Asian restaurant, specifically Korean—nothing out of the ordinary. The menu is simple and straightforward. However, the highlight of the restaurant is definitely the food and service. I ordered jjajangmyeon and spicy chicken—both were excellent. I highly recommend it!

We had a quick dinner in this place. When you enter the restaurant you will feel immediately the changed of ambiance in a good way, I feel like we were really in Korea. It is also really nice to have people around who speaks the language and also can easily converse in English. The food was pretty homey. We had a hot stone bibimbap and a jjampong with sweet and sour pork. The side dish was also amazing. Love the place and the vibes.

Google
This place is known for its generous portions. The food is overall good, but not the best I've had in other similar places. I recommend Jajangmyeon (Black bean sauce noodles), which is tasty. The atmosphere and service are good in general.

This place was soo good if you're craving Korean-Chinese food 😭 It's affordable and the portions were huge 😭 Will 100% come back 😍

Google
I had high hopes based on social media reviews. The service was fantastic - I dare say it might the best service I have ever experienced in a Korean restaurant. But I have the say, the noodle dishes were a let down when compared to other places. The jjamppong was not very flavorful and lacked the smokiness. The jjajangmyen was alright. The tang su yuk was okay, the sauce was not the best and lacked salt.

Google
The servers were super friendly and the food was fantastic. This is a no frills Korean restaurant, and that’s what I love about it. It feels like a restaurant run by Korean aunties, and that’s what it is. We had the combo Jajiangmian and Tangsuyuk, and both were super delicious. The kimchi was super good too…I liked how it had a subtle sweetness to it 😋 Just note that they put a mandatory 18% service charge on the bill but the service was great so I didn’t feel like it was unreasonable.

Google
Our friends was visiting NOVA and wanted Korean food!l. We came Saturday for lunch. I always liked this place. While it’s not flashy or trendy, which is reflected in the decor; they do make is good traditional Chinese-Korean food. We got a couple of items, I got the large jajang myun, the jjam-bbong and the pork tang soo yook. The food came out relatively quick. You can get a combo which is nice, but we always go for the individual entrees. During the weekends, you do pay dinner price regardless of the time. Everything was good but my favorite is definitely the spicy seafood soup (jjam bbong) which always hits the spot. The sweet and sour pork was crispy and I like how it comes with the sauce on the side so it does not get soggy. Service is friendly and quick. Not much I can dig them on. This is why I always come back.

Google
We love this place! 🤩 The food is always fantastic and the servers are very friendly! We always get the large Tang Suyeok (sweet&sour pork), Jajang Myun (noodles in black bean sauce), and the Ohjingo Boekum (spicy fried squid which comes with noodles). You can also have your choice of hot or cold barley "tea" which Koreans drink like water. 😉

Yelp
Was CRAVING tangsuyuk and jjajangmyeung so I needed to stop by. Super casual place and quick service. Ordered a medium pork tangsuyuk ($20) and a large jjajangmyeung ($15) to share with my bf. Also two miller lites ($4 each). Super large portions!! Jjajangmyeung was very easy to eat a lot of, the flavors are just right in my opinion. Noodles were so good. You can choose to have them cut for you or not. (I recommend getting them cut for easier eating). Tungsuyuk was addicting. The sauce was lightly sweet and so thick it coats the fried pork perfectly. The pork itself is like a chewy and crispy texture. So good. Mild in flavor as well, but easy to eat a lot of. Overall, a very reasonably priced place with quick friendly service. I will definitely come back when my next craving hits!

Yelp
We went as a family of 6. It was bustling as usual and our food arrived quick. Make sure to check out seasonal specials on the walls. The black bean sauce noodles were better than a lot of other spots in the area. I also got spicy squid and it was delicious. They don't skimp on ingredients or amount so come hungry! The jjampong seafood soup was just the right amount of spicy. Nothing was incredibly great but better than average. The interior needs a serious facelift but I guess the rundown look is part of its charm? So I won't take a star off for that.

Yelp
The last time I reviewed Choong Hwa Won was EIGHT whole years ago. I'm thrilled to share that they've maintained the impossibly high standards all these years. Ultimately, they have the most authentically delicious Korean fried rice and sweet and sour pork outside of Korea. OK, I admit I was unpleasantly surprised to find out they had started charging $3 for jajang sauce, but the fried rice for me isn't the same without it, and we come here so infrequently that it wasn't an issue at all. The service here has always been quick and 'professionally friendly.' Now I'm dreaming of that heavenly half 'N half bowl...

Yelp
Best beef tangsuyuk in the DMV area. Perfectly crunchy and good portion size. Perfect sauce too. Jjajangmyun and jjampong were reliable. Not like AMAZINF but still good. Solid place to come for traditional Korean Chinese food. Good prices and relatively fast service. Comes with typical Korean side dishes (pickles radishes, onion, etc). Interior is traditional restaurant with plentiful seating. Workers speak Korean and English! Busy on the weekends, many Korean families come here.

Yelp
Love this place! I've been here multiple times, and it's consistently a great experience. The staff is super friendly and attentive, service is fast, and it's a homey vibe inside. I usually get the half and half with Jajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce) and tangsuyuk (pork in sweet and sour sauce), and it's delicious! We also got their bulgogi which was a huge portion, and their fried dumplings, which were hot, crispy, and very good. I also love that hot tea and Korean sides (pickled radish, kimchi, etc) is included with your meal for free and unlimited! I'd definitely recommend this place for when you're craving a big, homey meal.

Yelp
The jjajangmyun was fantastic! My boyfriend's pork fried rice looked pretty good, too. The prices are way more reasonable than other places we went to for this trip. Service was really good and the banchan were delicious. Ambiance was family friendly!

Yelp
TL;DR- consistently good Korean Chinese food! Been here over 5 times over the past couple of years! I love this homey spot! It definitely doesn't look fancy on the outside but the food quality is always consistent. If you've never tried Korean black bean noodles (jajangmyeon) I recommend this spot! Tip: Get the Gan- Jajangmeyon instead of the regular jajangmeyon. The sauce and noodles come in a separate bowl and you get a lot more onions, meat, etc.

Yelp
WHAT I ATE - VIRGINIA @ Choong Hwa Won, Annandlae, VA https://www.youtube.com/@whatiate2000?sub_confirmation=1 Weekend dinner at Chong Hwa Won, had a simple bonchon presentation, Kimchee, Takuan (yellow, pickled radish) and Pickled Turnip. If you consider the raw onion petals and thick soy sauce as a bonchon, so be it. The fried Mandu was crispy and filled with ground pork with a soy dipping sauce on the side that can be spiced up with jalepeno. The Sweet & Sour Pork, was also very crunchy and not too greasy. It had the Sweet and Sour sauce with chunks of red and green sweet bell peppers on the side. It went well with a bowl of white rice. It's nice to be able to control how mch sweet sauce is on the crispy pork. My wife an I shared a Beef Fried Rice with Korean Black Spaghetti (ja Jang Moon) which gets it's color and umami flavor from Fermented Black Beans. The rice had a few shreds of beef in it, as did the black spaghetti. Tasty and simple. We're usually able to get a table, even during very busy times. The wait staff speak English and can describe some of the menu items. This is one of our go-to spots when we don't feel like cooking and don't want an overly fancy Korean meal. Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE! it should be busy all the time because it's the only spot I know in the area that makes Pork Tang-Soo-Yook and Ja Jang Myun. And they serve it in a combo plate so you get the best off all worlds. Crispy fried sweet and sour pork with silky noodles. It's a mouth sensation. Also exceptional mandu. Everything we have ordered here has been spot on and it's great prices. Service is always good and lots of space and parking. Very clean from the bathrooms to all the tables and service is quick. It's great lunch or dinner. And if you don't know what Ja Jang Myun is ... first you need to try it! But also it's a dish rich with history. Check out the Netflix korean rasphody on this dish and then come here to take care of your new craving!

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Picky toddler loved the jjajangmyun, and all the staff even held/fed our 4 month old so we could peacefully eat. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
We came here intentionally. It is in a different elevated area than the rest of the strip mall restaurants, so you can't end up here by accident. 1. Parking - ample spot right outside 2. Service - pushy, awkward. made us uncomfortable. She grabbed $20 bill from my hand as I was going through my wallet after she herself made a mistake and didn't choose tips on her device. This new trend is terrible. The waiter just waits and stares at you and never gives you a paper check, but hands over in their terminal. hated this! 3. Food is okay. bulgogi - terrible. The whole point of marinating means it gets soft and tender! It's tough here. jjajangmyeon - one of few authentic places that provide this dish and it is good soup - okay 4. ambience: typical wooden decor, not so comfortable chair I'd recommend just do take-out. don't bother eating in.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
I came here craving some Korean food, and this place definitely did not disappoint. Food - the miso soup was very thick and rich to my liking, and the bulgogi was also pretty good. Service - good, they are very friendly Parking - there is a parking lot outside Overall, this place is great.

Yelp
Authentic Noodle dishes. The portions are generous and the service was prompt and friendly. The food is Chinese Korean so not the mainstream bbq that most people associate with Korean restaurants. The jjambong was spicy, flavorful and full of seafood. The ja jang myon was just the right consistency and flavor. This was served with raw onions and radish in vinegar to eat along your ja Jang myon. These dishes are traditionally seafood and pork and there are little to no deviations of it on the menu. If you want plain noodles or rice, that's about all there will be if you're not pork or seafood friendly. Just be warned. Keep in mind, that's how it's intended to be prepared so if you're up for that, try it out! It's great! That's what this place is known for. Lots of 4 top tables and on a normal day I imagine it quite busy. Not too loud however not a place for a large group to sit around and chat. You eat and then you get out so others can get their food :). We happened to pop in after a snow storm so it was empty. They do offer a lunch combo of half ja jang myon and Jjambong which was a generous amount to be able to try both classics. We also had the fried dumplings which were handmade and fried fresh. Tasty as well.
google avatar

Ariel L.

Yelp
Very mediocre food Service is great I feel like they just give up trying to cater to Korean clients The client demographic has changed significantly Kimchi was good

Yelp
I love the ja jang myun and fried rice over here. korean pancake is good too. we asked for mapo tofu not to be spicy.

Yelp
My go to jajangmyun and jjamppong spot! I love their yoosansool too. I've been going here since I was a little girl so I'm happy to see it still standing and around. The prices are reasonable... even though it's not as affordable as Korea BUT. Decent. Especially the price for their simple jajangmyun. The food is consistent. Service is quick and the ambiance is like a cozy family ran restaurant. Their bone in chicken gganpoonggi is yummy but the sauce can be a bit lighter. But overall delicious.

Kay W.

Yelp
Used to love this place, haven't been here in a few years. Very disappointed now. Tongsuyuk - batter is different. Not as airy/crispy. Not that tasty. 47. Family platter Seafood jaja - portion size : much much smaller, barely any seafood, just lots of onions Added mandatory 18% tip for a party of 4, with below average service. Would not return. Would not recommend. Do yourself a favor and go to Centreville location.
google avatar

Daniel T.

Yelp
One of my favorite/go to spots for cheap (and filling) eats. Great place to order one big ass bowl of not expensive or fancy food. My go tos are the Ja-jang Myun and beef fried rice. Come get yourself a lunch combo bowl and leave happy and full.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
To be honest, the jjajangmyeon was pretty bland. I should've asked for salt or something but just ate it as is. Pork tang soo yook was good, light but very crispy and not greasy. Service was nice, nothing special. Place wasn't too crowded but had enough people, decent for lunch hour. Would come back just to eat the tang soo yook.
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
Choon Hwa Won is a hidden gem in our neighborhood! The half and half combo is a delight for indecisive taste buds. On one side, the Tang See Yuk boasts succulent pieces of crispy pork in a sweet and tangy sauce, while the other side features flavorful beef fried rice with a perfect blend of textures and spices. Half and half combo gets you the best of both worlds! Must try, staple of Annandale Korean food
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
I ordered Samsun gan jajang myon. It is one popular korean Chinese noodle dish. They served with onion, colored radish and kimchi. Pieces of onions were not fresh cut and kimchi has no taste which I remembered that I heard the Chinese restaurant use the Chinese imports. I didn't eat the kimchi. More importantly, the cooking such a popular dish make a great deal. The difference between regular jajang and gan jajang is the sauce that is where adding a watered starch or not. When this watered starch added, the color of sauce changed to a bit brown and dull, otherwise gan jajang sauce should be more oily and darker colored which the tastes are stronger fire flavored are richer. This place gan jajang was not near to the expectations that they can cook only to their level. This time I was disappointed.
google avatar

Virginia H.

Yelp
Not many places that has Korean and Chinese food in one spot! I love how they have the option to get half and half combos, however that is available for dine in only. I always get the Seafood Jjam Bbong because I prefer my noodles with broth rather than just sauce. It comes with a fair amount of seafood and at a decent level of spice. We also got the Gan Poong Sal. The chicken was very flavorful since it was covered with sauce. The interior does appear outdated, but it is clean and spacious. The service was great every time and the staff are friendly and accommodating with everything.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
With a line of people waiting to get in, it's not hard to see that this is a favorite amongst locals! Simple interior, so the food definitely becomes the main attraction! The spicy fried chicken was amazing, and a must-have! Crunchy, sweet, savory, and spicy! I personally also ordered the japchae, which was also really great! Looking forward to returning. :)

Yelp
this has been a place i've been going to for many years with friends and family. i really enjoy each visit, and have never been disappointed. i think they make the best jjajangmyun or Black Bean Noodles in the area, but that's just my opinion. i always get the fried pork and jjajangmyun combo aka number 76 i believe. i add pepper flakes for a little spice since i like spicy foods. the fried pork was super tender today when i visited and crispy too. ignore the veggies on my napkin, i'm usually not picky until it comes to veggies. happens that i'm not a huge carrot or bell pepper lover but i'll eat almost anything else. the service is always welcoming. it's really nice to see the same kind ladies serving and assisting me all these years! they greeted us with happy new years too :')) today during dinner was super, super busy but they were all still very quick to help and get our orders in! this is a place where i can always finish my food, very rare for me to bring to-go home LOL. the environment feels very homey and although i'm not korean, the food i always eat here feels like it's been made by a close elderly relative, a mother, grandparents, etc. this is one of my top 3 spots in DMV for sure happy new years!! ps, my friends i invited here were first time visitors and they really enjoyed their meal too!

Yelp
This is a pretty standard Korean spot. I think there's better in Annandale. I am really shocked at the high reviews. I would rate it below average. It's just ok. The dumplings are very confusing thick skin and I wouldn't call them Chinese or Korean. Nothing sticks out as very great. Had visited a couple times. Between us we had dolsot bibimbap, jajangmyeon, beef fried rice, haemul pajeon and dumplings. The banchan felt old. Kimchi, pickled radish, onion. It had been about 10 yrs since the past couple of visits. Now I remember why it has been 10 years. This most recent time I did not feel well after eating here. We tried twice. I reallllly wanted to like it.

Yelp
Yummy! Went with a few friends after church. The place was packed around 1:20 on a Sunday. I suggest to bathe yourself with patience. The server was lovely and quick . Ambience is very family friendly. I ate Jjam-Bbong - 짬뽕, it was very filling and yummy. Mt only caveat was, that I wished the weather was a bit colder than the one that I went to eat here. I am looking forward to coming again. I wonder if they accept solo guest who come to eat a delicious meal? I am asking since most of the people that go, do so in large groups. Jaja

Yelp
Choong Hwa Won is my favorite place to get Korean black bean noodles (jjajangmyun) and crispy sweet and sour pork (pork tangsooyook). Prices here are very decent for the amount of food that is served. Service is typically very quick and friendly. The wait staff always comes around to refill banchan and water. The interior of the restaurant is very homey and there is quite a lot of seating. In terms of the food, my go-to is the jjam-ja-myun. It is a half and half combo where one half is black bean noodles and the other half is spicy seafood noodle soup. The jjajangmyun is savory and rich, if you're looking to brighten it up a bit, I'd recommend shaking on some spicy korean chili flakes. The jjampong (spicy seafood soup) has a spicy kick and cleanses your palette from the richness of the black bean noodles. You can't forget to get an order of the pork tangsooyook for the table. The pork is fried to perfection and is really crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. It is served with a side of sweet and sour sauce that brings it to another level. Kimchi, raw onion, and pickled daikon are served as banchan and are unlimited so you can always order more if you've eaten all of it. Some black bean sauce is also typically served for you to dip your onion into.

Yelp
This is my first time having this dish and I chose to have a half and half with seafood was well. It was so filling and delicious! I love a balanced meal with vegetables.

Yelp
Have been here in years --18 years if I had to guess. Came for lunch with my coworkers, they wanted to try something new and I suggested Choog hwa won. They were blown away with the service. The hospitality here is on point! Left the best for Last!!!! The food is delicious everything on the menu is cooked to perfection. Will definitely return with the guys and/or family. Big thank you to the servers, cooks and managers of this establishment.

Yelp
What a gem! The service was great and attentive. The dining room was quaint and clean. Most importantly, the food here was amazing! We tried several dishes and my favorite was their half and half beef fried rice and crispy sweet and sour pork. I will definitely be back to try other dishes.

Yelp
5 star Chinese-Korean food that satisfies all your cravings! Be prepared to wait during busy times, luckily we came at 3pm on a holiday weekend and missed the rush. Surprising spacious inside, they have a takeout counter in the front but turn left to the main room to be seated. We ordered the Gan-poong-gi (fried chicken wings) with a sweet and spicy sauce which is some of the most addicting I've ever had. Definitely rivals many Korean fried chicken places I've been to in the past in Ktown Los Angeles. I also ordered the Sam Sun Jjamppong which comes with extra seafood. The soup was delicious but most of the extra frozen seafood was small peeled shrimp, unless you love shrimp I would recommend their regular Jjampong. We also got the chicken fried rice, which come with a mini bowl of Jjampong soup and black bean sauce. It was delicious and clearly had wok hei. All in all a delicious treat and highly recommended if you are in the area.

Yelp
Ignore everything about this place and eat the food. That is all that matters. I've been eating here since I was learning to count and I chronically miss this place's jajangmyun. The other dishes at this place are definitely good though, don't get me wrong. I always try to convince friends and family to come here whenever they're in the area and I only get positive feedback on the food. But for the price and flavor of the jajangmyun? It simply can't be beat. Affordable compared to other options in the area. Now I'm asking you to trust me - I've tried dozens of jajangmyun in the area and even in different states. This is style by far, my favorite. The sauce isn't overly sweet or just a landmine of onions like other places - the black bean flavor comes through very well. The sauce also has potatoes here. I rest my case.

Yelp
Tasty food with unusual flavors (to us, at least) in a place with neat interior design (lots of blond wood, rice paper doors). Didn't love the techno music. Very prompt service.
google avatar

Yelp
Probably the best bibimbap I've ever had. The various noodle dishes (especially seafood) are also really great. So many good authentic dishes, fresh brewed hot tea, and fast and friendly service. It's a staple!

Choong Hwa Won is popular, but yet soooo underrated! This Korean-Chinese restaurant has everything my heart desires without the long wait times. Their menu is extensive and maybe a little overwhelming if you're unfamiliar with the food, but you'll never order anything bad. I promise. I've heard they're well-known for their jajang myun, but I came here for the jjamppong! It's a spicy, seafood noodle soup and this is my FAVORITE place to get it. They have a few different varieties of this soup, but the ajummas always help me order the best tasting one (I think it's number #52 on the menu). Their sweet & sour pork is always fresh and tasty. And my bf ordered the Dolsot Bibimbap and loved it. The restaurant seems to do A LOT of takeout versus dine-in patrons. Service is always quick and efficient without feeling rushed. I've never had any issues at all. Check out Choong Hwa Won if you just want good Korean-Chinese food!

Yelp
Food is decent... Until you find hair.. and you bring it up to the waitresses... And then the "manager" asks if it's her staffs hair... Or... Here's the kicker... If it was our hair that we put in. I was taken a back today when she said this to me as I was having dinner with my wife and kids. Also ordered food to go to take home but I then asked to cancel the to go order and the food with hair in it. Super insulted by the lack of customer service from the manager. The other waitresses were better. This manager is no bueno...

Yelp
Tried this with my partner for the first place and it was amazing!! Can't believe we haven't tried this place until recently, despite knowing that it's been around for a very long time. The service was quick and efficient; especially for a Saturday evening. The ambiance was no frills type of setting with lots of Korean families dining in; overall, we will definitely be frequenting this place more often to try other dishes! Their kimchi banchan was good and fresh. We ordered their Half N Half Combos ( Ja-jang Myun / Jjam Bbong) and it was so good! Great flavors and the broth for the jjam bbong was mild enough to taste the seafood broth. Highly recommend for first timers! We also got the Gan-poong-gi (essentially sweet and sour chicken wings) and jag tang nap (mixed seafood with sea cucumber) and both were delicious. The jag tang nap was a bit pricier than expected, but you can tell the seafood was good quality. Very much enjoyed the chicken wings with crispy skin and good kick.

Yelp
Stopped in for some ja jang myun and was not disappointed. The pork tang sook was very crispy and the sauce was delicious. Service was quick and efficient and the atmosphere felt like you were right at home. Will be back soon!

Yelp
Jjam-jja is where it is... you get a little bit of both and don't feel obligated. I've been here a few times now and it's been consistently delish! Make sure to wear dark clothing cuz both the different dishes are sure to somehow make its way to your white shirt.... Sadly, my shirt always wants a taste of whatever I'm eating...

Yelp
Great place! The recipes have stayed the same throughout the years. Used to get the jajangmyun back in high school, then college and now as a grown adult still tastes the same. 5/5 service as well. Attentive and cheerful group of people working and are very helpful.

Yelp
Overall, I'd give this place a 3.5/5 but will bump it to a 4 because the portions were big. My friend and I came here for dinner and we both thought half n' half combos were the way to go. I got the #75 Tang-Bok Bap, which is half pork tang soo yook and half beef fried rice. The only banchan they gave us were kimchi & pickled radish - not bad but nothing special. Nice to snack on while we waited for food! The pork tang soo yook was quite good! The breading wasn't too thick (good ratio of pork and breading) and pork was flavorful and juicy. My only complaint is that they had already drizzled the sauce on the pork. I'd prefer dipping it in myself so that way I can get the right amount of sauce per bite. Also, 15 minutes later, some of the pork were pretty soggy from the sauce. The beef fried rice was simple and pretty good but much too bland. I felt like there was a lack of seasoning. However, there wasn't too much rice (more beef and carrots) which I appreciated. Service was lacking and we sat there for awhile before someone checked on us to give us the check. The half n' half combos are the best ways to sample their top dishes quickly! The portions were also really big so I got to take home a good amount of leftovers.

Yelp
Our friends was visiting NOVA and wanted Korean food!l. We came Saturday for lunch. I always liked this place. While it's not flashy or trendy, which is reflected in the decor; they do make is good traditional Chinese-Korean food.

Yelp
Friendly and efficient service! We ordered the bibimbap, Jjamppong, and bulgogi and would come back for all three! It was my first time trying the jjamppong, and it was spicier than expected, but so so flavorful
