Paris Hotels That Don't Play It Safe

"In common usage, 'chouchou' is a French term of endearment – but in the Parisian hospitality world it’s the name of a charming little boutique hotel right by the Palais Garnier. It’s chic and colourful, with a surplus of personality, and its diminutive name suits it – in contrast with the self-seriousness of the grand palace hotels, this is a fun and stylish hotel, but also an affordable and accessible one." - The MICHELIN Guide

The 52 Best Hotels in Paris

"This cheery, recently opened four-star hotel near the Opera is both a fun hangout spot with live events and a comfortable place in which to relax (especially thanks to your private hot tub). Just blocks from the Palais Garnier and other historic performance arts venues, as well as the iconic Galeries Lafayette department store, Chouchou does it all with a food hall-style restaurant and breezy bar centered around a rotating roster of live music and other stage events. On the visitor front, the crowd represents both business and leisure visitors who value a sense of place and want to be close to all the action. You’ve got your choice of fun in the 9th arrondissement, too, from a selection of smaller museums to notable shopping and the restaurants of South Pigalle. With a base here, you’re also close to the luxury stores of the 8th, the Montmartre area (including Sacre-Coeur), and even—if you head south towards the river—the Louvre." - Sandra Ramani, Lindsey Tramuta

Chouchou Hôtel

"Why book? This cheery, recently opened four-star hotel near the Opera is both a fun hangout spot—complete with live events—and a comfortable place in which to relax (don’t miss the private hot tubs). Set the scene In the heart of the Opera district, just blocks from the Palais Garnier and other historic performance arts venues, as well as the iconic Galeries Lafayette department store, Chouchou aims to be both a gathering spot for locals and a place of respite for travelers. You’ll find the former hanging out in the food hall-style restaurant and the breezy bar and around the stage, which showcases a rotating roster of live music and other events. On the visitor front, the crowd favors Paris lovers-both business and leisure—who don’t want to break the bank, but who also value a sense of place and want to be close to action. The backstory Named for a French term of endearment, Chouchou opened in fall 2020—a launch that was delayed just a few months due to the pandemic. It was a tricky time to introduce a hotel so geared towards socializing, but as conditions improved, the place quickly started buzzing. The hotel is part of the Elegancia group of well-priced boutique properties, which also includes favorites like Hotel Crayon Rouge and OFF Paris Seine. The rooms The 63 rooms are divided into five categories, from single to suite, and vary in size and shape, but all have a thoughtful design full of eye-catching details, from parquet floors and lush textiles to bold splashes of color. Views are either of the courtyard or street (a few even look out at the Opera), and some categories come with balconies. Across-the-board amenities include bluetooth speakers, mini-fridges (they come empty, though—no mini-bars), free WiFi, great lighting and full-size Prescription Lab products; guests also rave about the comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms and power showers. Of particular note are the higher category options: The two Junior Suites are named for songs by Edith Piaf and Serge Gainsbourg, respectively, and come with things like vintage phonographs and freestanding bathtubs. The one suite—named L’Arrache-Coeur after a noted 1950s novel—is lined with books and has a separate turntable-equipped living room. Food and drink An artisan-sourced cold breakfast spread is included in the rates (non-hotel guests can partake for 19 Euros); you can also enjoy it in your room or in the lobby. For lunch and dinner (on most days), head to the Food Market, where you can grab fresh seafood, including oysters, from the seafood stand, or head to La Grande Bouffe counter for meat and cheese plates, sausage cakes, accessible wines and other treats. Meanwhile, the colorful, casual Bar Guignette—set under a glass roof and rows of fairy lights—is the place for handcrafted cocktails and live entertainment; the latter might include an up-and-coming band, DJ sets or major soccer matches shown on the big screen. The spa There’s no full spa, but instead three individual bathing “cabins”, each with a lounging area, rain shower, sound system and hot tub big enough for two. Hotel and outside guests can book a cabin for 90-minute blocks of private downtime; drinks can be ordered for an extra charge. The neighborhood/area : You’ve got your choice of fun in the 9th arrondissement, from cultural hubs like the Opera and a selection of smaller museums to notable shopping and the restaurants of South Pigalle. With a base here, you’re also close to the luxury stores of the 8th, the Montmartre area (including Sacre-Coeur), and even—if you head south towards the river—the Louvre. The service : The warm, we’re-all-friends vibe from the youngish staff plays well with guests, who feel very well accommodated and attended to, especially for a four-star hotel with limited services. If you’ve got any issues, just speak up—they’re eager to make things right." - Sara Lieberman

A Sunny & Lively Stay in the Ninth Arrondissement - Hotels Above Par - Boutique Hotels & Travel

"A small, unapologetically French boutique hotel in the ninth arrondissement that balances classic Parisian charm with lively nightlife. The 63-room building features wrought-iron balconies, a long mirrored arrival hallway, and a welcoming, helpful staff who offer luggage assistance, neighborhood tips, and complimentary cappuccinos and carafes of sparkling water. The standout is a light-filled internal courtyard under a glass ceiling—strung with exposed bulbs and lush foliage—where guests enjoy a simple yet high-quality buffet breakfast (fresh croissants, crusty country bread, cheese, charcuterie, scrambled eggs, and pastries) by day and DJ-hosted parties by night; the music is energetic but contained to the courtyard so it rarely disturbs rooms. Rooms range from whimsical junior suites with pale-pink palettes and vintage phonographs to a penthouse with opera views, all featuring bright windows, immaculate white-tiled bathrooms stocked with premium toiletries, and thoughtfully eclectic design touches. Located centrally with easy access to major attractions, it presents a youthful, light-filled Parisian vibe and rates that start around $348 per night."

Super nice hotel, rooms are a bit small, but as almost all hotel rooms in Paris. Still though was clean and cosy. Nice bathroom with Japanese toilet. Have a great breakfast and a party in the evening. (They provide you earplugs at reception, but if you like to sleep in complete silence I would not recommend this place)

Lovely small hotel very close to the metro and walking distance to the Louvre. Rooms were fun and funky but most importantly the bed was SO comfortable. Our room was spotless. The staff are very friendly and helpful, very relaxed. On the Thursday night when we came back to the hotel there was a full on disco going on and very busy but when we got to our room on the fourth floor we did not hear the dreaded boom boom. Fun and funky place to stay.

I still dream about our stay at the ChouChou in Paris—what a fantastic hotel! From the moment we arrived, the staff were warm, welcoming, and accommodating. The complimentary coffee and pastries were such a thoughtful touch, and we immediately felt at home. Our room was spacious, cozy, and beautifully designed; we loved the bathroom's vibe so much that we actually modeled our remodel at home after it! A couple of notes for future guests: the central restaurant transforms into more of a club at night, which means there’s a lively crowd coming and going. If you’re a light sleeper or plan to keep your windows open, you may want to keep that in mind. Also, our room wasn’t ready at check-in after an overnight flight, which was a bit frustrating. That said, the staff handled it gracefully and offered us complimentary drinks for the inconvenience, which we really appreciated. Overall, ChouChou combines Parisian charm with modern comfort, and we’d happily stay again.

Lovely hotel, staff was really nice and accomodating, althought I would say its a really low 4 star hotel, but it wasnt as expensive comparing to all the other 4 stars in the area so I guess you get what you pay for. The rooms are a little bit small and dark but still very clean, if you dont have high expectations then this is definately the hotel for you! Nice for a quick 2-3 day trip, location was ok.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I didn’t stay at the hotel itself, but I came here for lunch — and it was absolutely amazing! Very pleasant service, attentive staff, and incredibly delicious food. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, everything feels top-notch. What I really liked is their personal approach to every guest — it makes you feel special from the very first moment. Highly recommend coming here to taste their wonderful dishes! 👌🇫🇷

Overall a very average experience and far too expensive for what you actually get. Unlucky enough to be in the hotel on a 'festival weekend' so difficulty sleeping because of noise from the bar/restaurant until the early hours. Not good for us but not counting towards our score as we were perhaps just unlucky. The room was 'superior' but felt anything but. Very cramped with only just room to walk around the bed. Very dark as the small window looked out onto the lower part of a space between buildings. We were told coffee wasn't in the room but could be collected from the bar for free. This meant nice coffee but not nice to collect when a party was going on (kids parties during daytime as well as adult parties at night). So, you were put off asking for it. A bottle of water left in the room on arrival but not any day afterwards. The shower was nice but inconsistent...sometimes taking a few attempts to turn on. The sink wouldn't drain (at least for ages). Some positives though. The breakfast was very nice and the breakfast area a nice place to sit. The staff were lovely. Room service was fine. So, a two star review if you are bothered by noise and visit at a festival weekend. A three star (just) if you discount that. It's our 5th city break of the year. One of the more expensive places we have stayed but the room was probably the worst (including one place that was half the cost). It definitely felt not superior

The location is absolutely perfect — right in the heart of Paris! It’s ideal for anyone who loves shopping and eating, with so many great spots just steps away. The room was quite small, which is expected for central Paris, but the bed was incredibly comfortable and made for a great night’s sleep. The only downside was the sink, which didn’t drain properly. It was a minor inconvenience, but worth mentioning. Overall, a great choice for travelers who want to be in the center of it all.

We had an amazing experience at Hôtel Chouchou for our honeymoon. The service was top-notch, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. We were surprised with a complimentary bath session, which made the stay even more intimate and special. The bistro bar next door had great vibes, and the free coffee and tea were a nice touch. The location was perfect for us right in the heart of a lively area in Paris. Would absolutely recommend and hope to return again! Oh not to mention great value..
