Huang Chia Shrimp Roll

"Over 60 years old, this eatery has moved four times, but that hasn’t deterred its loyal followers who continue to queue up daily before opening time. Shrimp roll is a classic Taiwanese snack and a must-try for all visitors. Huang Chia’s version is stuffed with shrimp and cabbage and is dipped in a potato starch batter before being deep-fried to order, resulting in a fluffy airy crust, with thinly sliced radish on the side for contrast." - Michelin Inspector

I am not sure if we didn't order the right stuff or if this place is just over rated. The food was ok. But not worth the hype. Try if it you are in the area but don't make a trip for it. Shrimp rolls were best thing. Braised pork also good. But everything else was just mid. The thick fish soup was interesting. Very fishy. The prok w rice was also good. Probably 2nd best. No beer but you can go next door and buy. Or if you have good stuff bring your own.

The fried shrimp roll and golden seafood cake, using fresh and succulent seafood and coupled with wasabi-chili sauce, is simply heavenly. The Tainan Danzi dry noodles are great too.

Nice place. Good taste and not too oily even if the shrimp is deep fried. It keeps it shrimp taste and is nicely balanced. Would come here as often as I can if I could.

Its been 10 years since the last time we come here. The shrimp roll has no caul fat anymore which I like it most in the shrimp rolls. Food is delicious thou.

When you visit Anping, this restaurant is highly recommended since it serves local delicious dishes in Tainan. It serves famous shrimp rolls, milk fish congee, milk fish sausages, braised pork rice, and other various seafood dishes. Gourmets are advised to come here if they intend to experience the charming local culture and cuisine in Tainan. Pay a visit. Ha....

Google
Famous for their deep fried prawn rolls but what I really enjoyed here was the 虱目鱼 Milk Fish Skin. So far the fish skin I've tried is usually deep fried, but this is not. It's like boiled/steamed and drizzled with their homemade braised minced pork. Something truly unique I've not tried anywhere else. The fried rolls were really good too, 真材实料, even the seafood cake, was filled with chunky bits of prawn and squid, not just seafood-flavoured flour paste.

shrimp rolls are super delicious and the air conditioner is a good extra in a hot day!

Food is awesome here. Their iconic dish is the prawn rolls. Try lots of different smaller dishes. They are easy to share with friends and family. It gets super crowded so best to come early and get a nice table. There are three floors of seating. Pay in the front and you bring your food to your table. Would recommend and come again.

Yelp
This is for their location in the train station 高鐵。 That location is next to a noodle place and a curry place. Since I ordered from all 3 eateries, I had the noodle and curry sent there so we can eat it together. The young cashier and the middle aged woman there are there are complete idiots. They asked me to eat the curry and noodle at the tables that belong to the noodles and curry and go back to eat the veggies I bought. Does that make any sense at all? It wasn't until I screamed at him in English how dumb it was that he said oh then eat and if we have customers you need to get up? That is the dumbest statement ever. So what happens if I am eating their dish at that time? Those 2 are lacking in customer service period. If you look local, they will treat you like shit, but if you speak English the attitude changes for slightly better. How pathetic!

Yelp
Got the special Tainan multi course tasting menu for 14 people. You have to specially reserve it and there's different menus depending on what your party wants to eat. The main focus of it is the serve a lot of Tainan's specialty foods all in one sitting. A lot of tourists come here and it has it's okay stuff...but I do think you can find better elsewhere....you'd just have to go to a lot of different stores. The coursed out family meal we had consisted of: Shrimp rolls Mini coffin toast Eel w/ noodles Fish Belly Congee Fish ball soup Mullet Roe Almond Jelly Fresh Fruit Dan Zhai Noodles Taro cake Oyster pancake and Black tea (sweetened) Everything was alright..nothing special but I think it's pretty good if you're taking someone out and want to try a bunch of stuff at once.

Yelp
Another unique dish of Tainan is the shrimp roll and this location is said to have the best version of it. When I got to the location, it was more fast food like than I expected. You order and pay at the counter and the put your food on a tray. There is a lot of seating available and it air conditioned which is great for the humid weather of Taiwan. The menu was pretty long, I just went with the shrimp roll and a bowl of dan zai noodles. The shrimp roll is similar to tempura but the shrimp is more minced and the out side is not as crispy. Haven't tried alot of dan zai noodles, but also felt like this was a okay version of it, not a flavorful as other version I had. Good value for the price, but the thing I like most was the air conditioning.

Yelp
While doing research on places to eat in Tainan, Chou's Shrimp Rolls was one of the top rated places. When my siblings and I got here, we were a bit surprised it was set up like a fast food joint. It was a scorching out day (even in January!), so we were relieved they had air conditioning in their seating area. Two orders of these shrimp rolls came out to 6 pieces. I liked how crispy they were on the outside and not too greasy, but I thought the shrimp rolls were just okay. Nothing to write home about, and definitely not something that is so amazing many blogs would rave about it. (But that's just me.) They did have other food items, so maybe those were better tasting!

Yelp
I never really liked shrimp rolls as a kid, but they are my parents' favorite, so we were dragged along. To my surprise, they were better than I remembered. I remember disliking the sweetness and the cabbage rolled within as a kid, but they seemed to have removed both. The roll is really crispy and savory without being greasy and tasty when dipped in the sauce. Also delicious are their Tainan migao (台南米糕), custard buns (黃金流沙包), fried squid balls (炸花枝丸). I love Tainan migao and it's hard to get authentic Tainan version in the US, so this really hit the spot. The custard bun is similar to 奶皇包, except the inside is more liquidy than thick custard. We came pretty late at night so there was barely anyone there. The interior is really large, clean, and welcoming. Shrimp rolls are still not among my favorites, but since this place makes my parents happy, I like it too.

Yelp
We stopped here as part of our trip biking around Taiwan. This is one of our favorite restaurants during our trip. The shrimp roll is awesome. They also got variety of other Taiwan special fish (肉粽, 棺材板, 杏仁豆腐,龙须菜...). It also offers many vegetarian options. The restaurant is quite crowded during lunch time. The staff is friendly.

Yelp
This is a quick but great place to eat in Tainan. Especially the shrimp rolls are absolutely delicious, but the other dishes are excellent, too.

Yelp
Chou's Shrimp Rolls have been a longtime favorite of many residents in Tainan. It's one of those places you take your friends and family visiting from other parts of Taiwan or another country to eat at. Although it's not the fanciest restaurant, it's far from a street vendor establishment. There are plenty of seating and there is air conditioning. As odd as that sounds, a lot of these places here do not have AC and it's miserable eating during the hot Summer months. The Shrimp Rolls are always a safe bet. Come early as the line gets pretty long during dinner time. If you're unlucky you'll see a tour bus outside which is quite a frequent sight. This means long lines and huge crowds.

Yelp
This place was so ridiculously delicious I cried heck.... I had the braised pork rice and shrimp roll and soup. And it was all so good I just wanted to eat it forever heck...... HECK! It was so good you have to come here if you're in the area, it would be a shame to miss out.

Yelp
Only tried three dishes and all of them were pretty good. Didn't try the sweet stuff. The whole restaurant was big and very clean. You order at the counter and get your food right there, kinda like fast food joint. Then you find a table. There are people to clean after you.

Yelp
I'll admit that I haven't had shrimp rolls anywhere else in Tainan, but the ones here do the trick for me. I've tried several things from their menu as well, and nothing has ever been bad. I like getting their noodles/vermicelli with ground meat (擔仔米粉/麵). Beware that since this is a classic "little eats" or 小吃 place, the portions will be snack-sized. I also like that this place is clean and has well-functioning AC, which is a godsend in hot and humid Taiwan. Compared to other places in Taiwan, it might be a tad pricier, but everything is still cheap compared to the US. Sure, it might be a little sterile, but Chou's Shrimp Rolls is a pretty safe and friendly introduction to authentic Tainan food.
