Chow House is a consistently solid bet. You're really coming here for the food, but the service is great and the ambiance is a nice accompaniment to both. We came in on the later side on Friday most recently and were immediately shown to a table despite the lack of reservation.
After being given exactly the right amount of time to deliberate, our server came around to take our order of wood ear mushrooms in vinegar, Dan Dan Noodles, and the pictured braised bloodcurd in chili. The mushrooms had that nice crunchy squidgy texture you're after and the Dan Dan Noodles had all the right Szechuan notes, numbing, little spicy, savory. Great start to prep for the main event: bloodcurd and friends over rice. Realistically, this thing could probably feed 4 but we gave it our best go. The Szechuan flavors again were on point, plenty of chili and pepper floating in amongst the bloodcurd, ham, mushroom, intestines, tripe and beef slices. If you're into off cuts, nothing beats this.
But everything is good here, I can also recommend cumin lamb as a staple done really well. I wouldn't hesitate to order anything I happened to be in the mood for. Wash it all down with ambiance setting music, cool flatware, plenty of rice and relatively cheap Tsing Tao.
Pro Tip: If you live in the neighborhood, don't sleep on the lunch special which is probably the best deal for blocks around.
