Don’t Hassle Houston Restaurant Workers. Just Wear A Mask While Dining Out. | Eater Houston

"I learned that Matt Chow, who operates the Chinese eatery Chow Wok, closed his restaurant’s dining room after dealing with unruly customers who refused to wear masks; some simply forgot and went back to their car, while others stormed out before staff could tell them about the restaurant’s curbside ordering options." - Amy McCarthy

Google
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hands Down, the Best Chinese Food We’ve Ever Had Chow Wok absolutely blew us away. The portions are huge, the flavors are spot-on, and the food quality is honestly some of the best we’ve ever had from a Chinese restaurant. It may be a small spot, but it delivers big on taste, freshness, and value-completely worth the stop if you love this style of food. What made the experience even better was the owner personally coming out to greet us. That kind of hospitality is rare and really shows how much pride they take in their restaurant.

Google
Tried this place and completely loved it!!! It’s not only great price wise but they have sooooo many options. Their House Fried Rice is delicious!!! Definitely recommend getting the bbq pork 🤤🤤

Google
I'm giving it a full five stars because when I went in I was greeted very thoughtfully and they took my order promptly and actually brought me my order as I was sitting in the restaurant. I ordered the tempura shrimp appetizer and the pork rib appetizer what's a Kung Pao delight meal that comes with either fried rice or steamed rice and I chose steamed rice and it did not disappoint. I paid close to $40 what's the entire thing but I was able to feed three people and have enough left over to feed me later and it was absolutely amazing. I really hope more people will go to this place and realize how good their food is.

Google
I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was disappointing enough that I feel others should be aware. I spent over $50 on a takeout order at this restaurant, expecting at least basic customer courtesy. When I asked for one small pack of chili sauce to go, I was flat-out refused. This wasn’t a large or unreasonable request—especially considering the size of the order and that chili sauce is a standard condiment commonly included with Chinese food. The refusal felt unnecessarily rigid and unappreciative of a paying customer. It wasn’t about the sauce itself, but about the lack of flexibility and customer service.

Google
Came from seeing a tik tok and recommending to order the garlic shrimp fried rice. The wife is a big fan of General Tso and we tried the wings. Also an order of mini shrimp egg rolls. Everything was good especially the rice if are a garlic lover. You can get the sauce for the wings on the side if you want. If you don’t like a lot of sauce, that would be the move. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

Google
Service is 10/10, they answer the phone politely, when you enter the restaurant they greet you warmly. I like that Food- I've been eating here for years and the quality and portions have remained excellent . My weekend go-to meals, Mongolian chicken, steamed rice, crab Rangoon. If I'm feeling jazzy maybe I'll head the wonton wrapped shrimp. My most recent meal was shrimp fried rice. Spicy, with wonton wrapped shrimp This is my spot for quick take-out and they have never let me down. I'll always support

Google
Chow Wok is always delicious and fresh, with quick service every time. Portion size is generous. We’ve eaten at the restaurant several times, and it’s consistently clean with great service. This is our regular go-to spot for Chinese food.

Google
First time coming with the guys for lunch, the price & quality, & service is OUTSTANDING 💯. THE LUNCH IS GREAT! ILL BE GETTING ANOTHER PLATE SOON!!! 😁

Yelp
One of the consistently best places to grab some take out Chinese. Portions are huge and food is excellent. I personally love the Gen Tso Wings!
google avatar

Tanae S.

Yelp
I usually enjoy my shrimp fried rice. Tonight it was extra dark. Which clearly means too much soy sauce. It's so salty it's not even edible. This is crazy.

Yelp
Walked in today and ordered General Tso's chicken. To start with, the price came out at around 13 with tips and then on top of that, it was brought out to me fairly quick. The food itself was well portioned but the spice left something to be desired. There was a slight kick, like a baby making its presence known in the womb. With the taste being decent at best, the biggest draw was the fact that after I felt so full that not even grandma on Thanksgiving day could get me to nibble anymore.

Yelp
I came here about 4 years ago and now I know why I haven't been back! I ordered takeout for myself and my kids. The pepper steak and Mongolian chicken. First of all the Mongolian chicken was spicy! It was for my daughter who's 7 and she took one bite and said "mommy that's hot!" I tasted it and sure enough it was spicy! I've ordered Mongolian chicken several times from several different restaurants and it's NEVER been spicy. The pepper steak the "beef" was very chewy and gummy. The texture of the meat was absolutely disgusting I'm sorry. I'm sure they have some great dishes because they do have great reviews, however today I was beyond disappointed in the quality and taste of my order.

Roger N.

Yelp
Ordered from them last week and the Curry Chicken dish was lacking any flavor or taste. It was just very bland and had an unfavorable flavor to it, like the chicken was washed out. The week before I ordered the Curry Shrimp and that dish was very tasty and flavorful. I won't order the Curry chicken again from Chow Wok.

Yelp
Tried to call and place and order but it went to vm. Got a text right after that they were with customers and would try to call me back. Never did. I placed an order online for a shrimp fried rice, light veggies and soy sauce. Only thing is I wish it was fried harder. It was so fresh and the shrimp were a good size and cooked perfectly. I would get it again.

Yelp
--Dearest Reader, I set pen to paper from the sweltering heart of Houston, where fate led me to a small but steadfast outpost known as Chow Wok. Much like a trusted quartermaster in the thick of campaign, this establishment sees to the nourishment of weary souls with uncommon care and consistency. Their provisions are many, and each dish a soldier in its own right. The Kung Pao--whether made with chicken or the humble tofu--comes at you like a cavalry charge: bold, peppered with heat, and not lacking in spirit. General Tso's, too, marches in proudly, sweet with just enough bite, a fitting tribute to a commander who leads with both strength and subtlety. The Mongolian beef (or tofu, if you march a gentler path) arrives like a midnight raid--rich, deep, and hard to forget. And their fried rice? A true camp staple--filling, reliable, and as welcome as dry boots in a thunderstorm. Chow Wok serves both those on foot and those dug in at home, offering pickup or delivery with the efficiency of a well-run supply line. In these parts, folks speak of them as a cornerstone--no less vital than the blacksmith or the church bell. Should your path ever lead through these sun-baked roads, I urge you, stop in. Take rest. Let Chow Wok fill your belly as surely as a letter from home fills the heart. Until Next Time, --Mitchell

Yelp
My go-to spot whenever I'm craving Chinese-American. The staff are super friendly and welcoming. Matt and Jason are always super helpful when I have questions about the menu. The food is delicious every time I order. My top items are the shrimp egg rolls, wings, orange beef, Singapore rice noodle, garlic seafood fried rice, moo goo gai pan, and lo mein. Overall 10/10 service
google avatar

Yelp
This was a hidden gem! Super reasonable price on their dinner specials. Great customer service. The food was excellent and one of the best Chinese food restaurants I have ever had, no joke. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Chow Wok is our 'go-to' Chinese delivery place. It's got everything you could want for American Chinese food and it's done pretty dang well. They are consistently good and that's what keeps us coming back. They are just down the road from us so it's very quick to get it delivered to our door for an easy weeknight dinner.

Yelp
Amazing customer service!!!! They even checked on me while eating to make sure everything was good! The black sweet tea is soooo delicious! Very clean inside from the tables to the floors. Food came out fresh and hot, order first and they bring it to you. When I asked for a tea refill (free refill was mentioned to me when I paid for the tea) and to go box, they did seem a little irritable but I guess that's okay to look past, maybe they had a lot to do. Will definitely be returning to try them out again. Time of visit: 3:00pm 7/29

Yelp
This place is awesome. Chow wok has become a staple in my life. Everything is good here. I've never had an issue with anything I've ordered. The owner and staff are great and always accommodating. I will say communication is key, if you want something ask for it don't assume. The crab rangoons are a1, dumplings superb, and the gen tsos chicken is great. Large servings always with enough for a second serving.

Lourdes V.

Yelp
Generous portions, food was hot and delicious!would definitely be coming back! Packaging for the rice was in a nice little Chinese to go box.

Yelp
I wanted to love it but it was not as good as others have said. Here's my take: When we walked in, the cashier is not friendly but not rude just just...I told her it was our first time and to give us a minute. She just stared ahead. Okay... We ordered orange chicken, ribs, crab rangoons, egg rolls, hot and sour soup, chicken dumplings and honey walnut shrimp. The orange chicken was good not great. It had a nice heat and interesting orange flavor which my daughter thought was almost tropical. I thought the portions were small. The honey walnut shrimp had ALOTtt of mayo on it. Other that, pretty good but again small. The hot and sour soup was okay and so were the egg rolls. The dumplings were pretty good; the crab Rangoon's were big and good. Both nice size in amount and portion. The ribs were not good to me or the hubs because of the sauce and meat was just off. This may be a personal preference though. We drove 28 minutes to get here, so we wouldn't return to eat in; it's definitely a place to door dash as it's small and half the restaurant is reserved for to go.

Yelp
I was craving some Chinese for lunch and remember seeing this place as I was driving once so decided I'll give them a try today. I ordered my food online and was told about 25-30 min. Got to the restaurant in about 20 min and it was ready for me to go. The worker was very nice and offered me extra condiments if I needed them. I ordered the general Tso's Chicken with the fried rice and one pork egg roll. Overall, the food was not bad but honestly I was not a fan of the fried rice (which I did see in a previous review but wanted to try it for my self). It didn't really look or taste like fried rice to me. The egg roll was really good and fried every well. My General Tso's chicken was pretty good as well I just wish it had a bit more sauce so that I could mix it in with the rice. The pricing is very reasonable and they give you a really good amount of food so you will definitely have leftovers.

Yelp
I ordered lunch online for myself and a friend. We ordered the General Tso's lunch with fried rice and an order of vegetable lo mein. The service was super quick, we were quoted 20 minutes but it was ready in less than 10. We arrived and the staff were nice. Unfortunately, that's the best part of the experience. The food was not great, the chicken was hard/stale, swimming in sauce, the fried rice wasn't flavorful at all, however the egg-roll was really good -- I'd go back just for that. The lo mein also was unsatisfactory, kinda bland. We didn't take more than two bites.

Yelp
Great food! Hot, fast and delicious. I've been looking for a good Chinese restaurant that provided fresh food at an affordable price. Definitely my new favorite place for Chinese.
google avatar

Cynthia J.

Yelp
Soooo, I meant to get food from another place not from here. Big boo boo but it was okay. I ordered fried rice with extra shrimp in it and shrimp lomein extra spicy with extra shrimp. Now, to me, shrimp lomein should be made with lomein noodles and the spice should be developed in the dish. In the sauce, ya know. The shrimp lomein had plenty of shrimp but it was made with fettuccine noodles and doused in crushed red peppers. Come on, do better. Do much better. It tasted okay but I will never get again. The shrimp fried rice was good. I thought to make it spicy but so glad I didn't or I wouldn't be pleased with the dish. The put plenty of shrimp in it. I ordered an egg roll and it was a mushy mess.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place. Seems like all the Chinese restaurants near my home are subpar or closing all together. I still have one ol faithful, but I'm always searching for a backup just in case. I wasn't able to find a menu online, so I was heavily relying on the order taker. She was very helpful, patient and made recommendations. I ordered pan fried dumplings, wonton soup, sesame chicken with fried rice and a pork eggroll. The delivery guy was very nice and arrived in the time quoted. This is where the hood ended. The wonton soup was darker than any other wonton soup I've ever seen. It was fair. The one good thing about it was you can choose with green onions or without. WITHOUT! Not an onion fan. I did not try the wonton its self. I was a little turned off by the color of the broth. The pan fried dumplings were the best item in my order. Not super flavorful, but better than the other food. The sesame chicken was terrible. The glaze had absolutely no flavor and the chicken itself had hard pieces on the edges that I had to spit out. It was so bad, I quit after 2 pieces and tossed the rest. The fried rice was hopeful looking. I like fried rice with egg, but this was a big nope! The rice was hard and under cooked. The eggroll was okay, but honestly, Jack In The Box has the best eggrolls ever! About 35 minutes after eating that small amount, my hands started to swell. I guess that's an indication of MSG? All this to say, I was so disappointed with my order. $29.00 for the meal and most of it went into the trash. I'm always willing to give grace and try again, but I don't think I can stomach it. Sorry, CW.

Yelp
5.99 lunch special! I repeat $5.99 lunch special! This has quickly become one of my favorite lunch spots. The food is always fresh, made to order & super affordable. The lunch special includes an entree, side of rice, an egg roll AND a drink! It's nice that they're offering such an amazing deal amidst inflation & a pandemic. The service is good & my order is always ready when I arrive. I've got my entire office ordering lunch from here & everyone loves it! Keep up the great work Chow Wok!

Bobbie

Yelp
I'm from Chicago and we have some of the best food in the United States! Don't believe me ask Google. Anyway, i have found that most places to eat in Houston lack flavor. That's not the case here. The food is very flavorful. It tastes like Chicago's Chinese food. I will definitely be back. Go ahead... place that order!
google avatar

Nena K.

Yelp
Food is really tasty and portions are plentiful! I'm so glad I discovered this place on DoorDash. I've been looking for good Chinese since I moved to Houston and they will be my new go to! I had enough chicken to last for 2 days. Soooo good!

Mk L.

Yelp
Wow! It's my first time at Chow Wok, and I'm impressed. I'll be a repeat customer. The food was fresh: the vegetables were crunchy and fresh, the shrimp was tender and well-cooked, and the fried rice was delicious. The very reasonable lunch special price included a well-spiced soup and beverage for the eat-in lunch special. What surprised and pleased me most was the hospitality and excellent service from the staff of this walk-up counter restaurant. They brought my food and beverage to my table, checked on me, and were happy to get me a refill of tea when they saw my cup was empty - and this is from a counter-service restaurant!!! They certainly have captured the spirit of Texas hospitality. Better table service than many sit-down restaurants! I liked the bright dining space. I look forward to coming back with my friends.

Yelp
Newbie here in Houston I came to Chow Wok based on the menu photo's (bad choice) how do you mess up General Tso chicken? Outside of the very small portion, the rice was hard and tasted as if it has been refried, the sauce on the chicken was a gel definitely not made fresh. I'm so disappointed

Sharon S.

Yelp
Not a fan. We ordered beef and snow peas, chicken and broccoli, pork and veggies, salt and pepper tofu along with a couple of fried rices. The food, outside of the salt and pepper tofu and fried rice, was soooo incredibly sweet actually cloyingly sweet that, unfortunately, no one in our family would eat it. The fried rice was over darkened with soy sauce??? maybe cooked twice as another reviewer put it and not very appetizing. The salt and pepper tofu is good but it was take out so a little soggy (this was to be expected). Sadly we ordered based on the reviews and were out over $100 and pretty much everything went into the trash. Not sure why the reviews are so high. We certainly aren't a fan of the overly sweet Americanized Chinese food that is served in so many restaurants here.
google avatar

Veit B.

Yelp
Four but not five stars because my egg roll was not crispy. Mongolian Chicken and Egg Drop soup were delicious. It's a very basic restaurant with flair. The staff is very friendly and bend half backwards to accommodate your wishes. And it is very affordable. You get more than you pay for. Highly recommended.

Wasay H.

Yelp
Tried it out for the first time food was definitely on par. Would recommend if you lookin for some good Chinese food.
google avatar

Vvoman R.

Yelp
If you want good Chinese this is your place. I had the garlic chicken and the sauce was not too thick and the veggies still had some crunch. They call it spicy but it's only a light kick nothing major. My spouse had the Singapore noodles and they were the same spice wise. Both dishes were well portioned. Definitely worth trying. Edit: In response to the owner's offer to make dishes spicer, we certainly will ask next time. But honestly I like to see what the base line is before asking for more. I've been to places where the medium was overwhelming, so wouldn't want to ask them for more spice. You are providing a good product. We will be back.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
The price for the amount of food can't be beat. It tastes amazing when you want some hangover cure, or just to eat dirty. It's the Chinese food you remember as a kid. It's definitely a guilty pleasure. I've had the general Cho's, the sesame chicken.. can confirm that I will get these again. It's addicting.

Leigh Y.

Yelp
I love their general tso chicken, green beans, and eggplant dish. I usually have it delivered 1-2 times a month. But they changed the size and recipe for the green beans and eggplant dish. Why!!???!!
google avatar

Oge O.

Yelp
Yummmmm. This place is deserving of all the stars. U cannot beat the lunch price special. $6.50 or so for full size portion of food, drink and soup included and it was so delicious. Great customer service. Clean and smells nice. And I love tht there were people of their culture eating here, showed tht the food is authentic and fresh. If I stayed in this area, would for sure become a regular. :-)
google avatar

Joey L.

Yelp
The sesame chicken and the wings were great. We also had dumplings and the chicken egg rolls which were also great. What separates this place from other Chinese restaurants that I have been to in north Houston is that everything tastes fresh. I believe the egg rolls and the dumplings were home made. The sesame chicken has a nice crunchy puffy batter.
google avatar

Arexy D.

Yelp
We ordered cheese puffs, general tso chicken, combination fried rice, and lo mein. Everything about this place was delicious! When we tried the first two things we were compelled to try more and ended up eating more than what we could. The serving sizes are extremely generous and very well much worth their price. We are excited to continue to try new things off their menu because we were left content! I do have to say that our waitress just seemed like she did not want to be there at all. The food was so good that I do not want to have to remove a star simply because one of their employees do not treat us with full respect. When we asked for hot sauce, she gave us a mean look and proceeded to bring the sauce without saying an extra word. After that, we felt uncomfortable and didn't want to ask her for a to go box so we asked the cashiers instead because they were nice. One of the owners asked us about the quality of food and we happily said it was delicious. One bad apple doesnt make this place bad. We will be returning!
google avatar

Sequoia S.

Yelp
THIS PLACE HAS SOME OF THE BEST CHINESE FOOD!!!!! I have ordered from Chow Wok about 4-5x now and the food is always made fresh. It's a quick turnaround from the time I place my order to when it's delivered or ready for pickup. Customer service is pretty good, they will make recommendations/accommodations as needed for your order. I haven't dined in so I can't speak to the restaurant setting but the food at this place is quality and so delicious. I usually order their house fried rice with no pork, peas or carrots and an order of shrimp egg rolls. Eleven out of 10 every time.
google avatar

Jake H.

Yelp
i'm not from this area. I was getting my truck service across the street and decided to find lunch option. i saw this in yelp and i literally have to just cross the street from A+ transmission specialist. Their lunch options are good and price right. for under $8 i got this mongolian chicken that come with fried rice, egg roll, soup of choice and drink. this a steal. The service is cook to order and fast and the seasoning is is decent for this price it's basically fast food. highly recommended
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
I thought the food was pretty much average, not bad, but nothing extraordinary either. However, the menu is very straightforward and has photos and the lunch specials were a good deal. The restaurant seemed clean. This would be a good place for a quick and affordable lunch or maybe takeout. Check it out if you are in the area.

Brittany F.

Yelp
The service was very friendly and kind, and got our order right away. Even took it to our car within minutes! They have the best Chinese food and that lo mein noodles is fire!! Love this place

Yelp
Just in town for four days, really wanted some Chinese, can't get any good Chinese in South Padre! Ordered Mongolian Beef for my meal and Almond Chicken for my wife. Also had hot and sour soup, shrimp egg rolls and shrimp fried rice! What a meal!!! Great food and excellent service! The price was extremely reasonable and the portions were large! I'm going to go back on Friday and get some more to take back to the island with us! Saturday dinner!

Lola K.

Yelp
I love chow wok! Orange chicken is fabulous and o also enjoy the kung Pao chicken. My husband is vegetarian and he enjoys the tofu dishes. I also love the egg drop soup. Very quick service!
google avatar

C A.

Yelp
Everything I've tried has been fantastic! Had the pan fried pork dumplings, egg rolls are sooo good and it's hard to find good egg rolls that are not so greasy or flavorless. Their sesame chicken very good as well. My coworkers love their food too. Lunch prices are perfect!
google avatar

Lianys D.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in town. I was really impressed. The service was fast and the people there are very nice. I'll be back soon. Thanks

Tiffany F.

Yelp
Love the Mongolian combo with beef , shrimp, and chicken, nice spicy sweet favor! Shrimp Mongolian just as delicious! Service was quick and efficient!

Joseph C.

Yelp
Called in to see if white or dark meat was used for chicken dishes. First phone call was answered and they hung up. Second call was answered but man was rude and said "I think white, why is there a problem?" Who answers the phone like this? Red flag. Cannot answer a simple question?
google avatar

Mishanae C.

Yelp
This used to be good Chinese food but they've started changing their recipes. If it isn't broken don't fix it. It's very subpar now. Lo mein isn't what it used to be and the general tsos chicken sauce is weirdly thick and the breading just isn't the same. Not coming back again. I've been a customer since 2019.
google avatar

Nathan B.

Yelp
Best food, excellent service, and a great ambiance. They're practically perfect in every way. I would highly recommend them to anyone who likes Chinese food.

Jack K.

Yelp
It's a hole in the wall place with bare minimum ambiance, it's definitely not a dine-in, date night restaurant, but god is the food good!!! I especially love the seafood garlic butter fried rice. It's my new favorite food! So, if you are looking for Chinese takeout or delivery at a good price with great taste, this is hands down the right place!
google avatar

Jonathan T.

Yelp
The food was excellent and affordable to feed the whole family. It was refreshing for that area . place is really clean and staff was friendly

Yelp
Very kind and quick service. Food was amazing!!! We had not had Chinese food this great in a long time. Will definitely be back! The tempura shrimp was my favorite!
