The Best Restaurants in Spokane, Washingston | Eater Seattle

"“Go to Chowderhead” is a simple message spelled out on billboards and stickers sprawled across the city. You should heed that advice. Owner Travis Tveit is a five-star chef stuck in a punky sandwich shop body. The French dip features onions and mushrooms roasted in bacon fat. The turkey pot pie chowder has pea tendrils. Sandwich or soup, or both, you can’t go wrong here." - Kris Kilduff

The food here was really good. I had the cheesesteak with fries and a bowl of steelhead clam chowder. The chowder was delicious, the sandwich was great, and even though the fries were a little salty, they were still fresh. Unfortunately, the service didn’t match the quality of the food. The place was empty when I walked in, but the guy who helped me seemed really dry and uninterested, like I was bothering him just by asking for an iced tea. Later on, another couple came in and he greeted them warmly, chatted about the menu, and seemed way more engaged definitely not the same experience I got. I was never checked on or asked if I wanted a refill or a to-go box, and I got my bill while I was still eating. When I went to pay, it was kind of an issue, and he even rang up my ticket wrong so it came out higher at the register. I’m visiting from out of state and chose this place because the food looked good and it was! But the poor service really ruined the overall experience. I hope it wasn’t because I’m Latina, and more just a bad start to his shift. Either way, great food, but I wouldn’t come back. My check was $40, despite the poor service I still left a tip.

Google
I have enjoyed this place since it opened. Every meal from Italian beef sandwiches to burgers to hot dog sandwiches have been made with intense flavors that can only be executed by an extremely passion driven chef and staff. The ambiance of the lobby where you can see fresh vibrant local art, local cut and displayed flowers as well as feel the history of the restaurant in every tile deep into your soul. The menu not vast but very intentionally made where it’s actually hard to not order what ever special they are running that week.

Atmosphere: Small Dive Bar Vibes But with Explicit rap music from the era when rap was dope. Service: waitress stopped and asked if we needed anything, but not too many times, and the dude that took our order knew when to approach our table as we were ready when he arrived. This equates to employees knowing their role and crushing it at this restaurant. There was also some dude downing beers at the bar that I assumed was the owner or manager. He helped clear tables with the waitress on shift and had asked why the customers left their food behind and left so much. This equates to a manager or owner who is actively trying to figure out issues before they become apparent, top notch on quality control. My advice would be to pro actively engage with the staff prior to opening and reiterate the importance of engaging with customers for their feedback. Especiallly when trying new menu items, or are new customers. I had the turkey with pesto on ciabatta* bread and the pesto didn't taste like it was made in house, I assumed from the lack of oil in the pesto. But I could be wrong. The fries were warm on their way to cold, and I can understand from the lack of space there's probably no heater for them to sit under. The price of the sandwiches are a little steep, but with the atmosphere and the excellent service, it is worthy of a stop.

9.29.25: We live over an hour away but had to come to this part of town to run an errand and I wanted to check this place out since it was nearby. When we walked in you immediately got that cool divey feel and I loved their old school music choice. I didn't catch our servers name but she was super sweet and friendly. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich with a cup of tomato basil and my friend got the meatball sub. My grilled cheese was so cheesy and the bread was perfectly toasted. The tomato basil soup was hot, creamy, and had a good season besides the tomatoes themselves. My friend said he enjoyed his meatball sub and that it had a great flavor and that the bread was awesome. He just wished it was a tad bit hotter, temperature-wise. Overall, it was an enjoyable first visit and we'll be back again. My friend really wants to try the Chop Cheese next time. It's worth noting they have daily specials and a happy hour from 3-6pm daily with Thursdays being all day.

Google
Small space but they make it work. The food was great. I can not wait to go back and try more things. The place was packed when we got there but you wouldn't have known it. Food and drinks came fast. Great clam chowder and the grinder we shared was delicious.

Juh-sten D.

Google
The fact that this is the only place in Spokane that serves a Chopped Cheese is enough for at least 10-stars. (East coast thing) We walk in they're playing Hippie Dealt Cult (great choice) and served immediately. Food was hot, delicious, filling. Great portions. Clam chowder bread bowl was phenomenal! Service was top notch. Ambiance stellar. Defiently coming back to try the Rest of the menu. Highly recommend this place! 👍👍

Google
I’ve been wanting to try them out and finally was able to today. Chowder and steak sandwich was outstanding. As expected from reading the reviews. Service could use a little help. But honestly the food makes up for it. Hubby and I ended up halving our sandwich and ordered cup of chowder each with side of fries. Only real complaint is parking. Luckily we did get there on time for someone to pull out of one right in front. For 1.5 hours it was $3 which isn’t bad. But we only ended up needing 1 hour total. Would like to return to try their meatball sandwich!

Google
Visited chowderhead for the first time and it was great. If Google allowed half stars this would be a 4.5/5 for me. Food delicious, staff extremely friendly and kind, and overall a good experience. They were all sold out of the steelhead chowder so we will come back another day to try it, but ordered the turkey pesto Sando and the fried fish with the tomato basil soup. They are not stingy on fillings. The prices make sense for the size and quality of food you are receiving. My dad was highly impressed by the turkey pesto sandwich, especially being that it has sprouts on it! (We love sprouts on a sandwich) the salad was fresh- and he ended taking half of the sandwich home for a second meal later that evening. As for my fish sandwich, very well executed. Toasted sesame bun was a good choice. Pickled onions were perfect. Fish was perfectly battered and fried. It was delicious and very filling. The only thing that could have made this a 5 stars was that the tomato basil soup was too salty. The flavor itself was good, but seems like someone might have accidentally added too much salt. Subsequently we couldn’t finish it, and were chugging a lot of water in between spoonfuls. Besides this one small thing, this is a great place to eat. And the bathroom had a poster that made me chuckle. I would come back here again.

Yelp
Had a religious experience with their crispy chicken caesar sandwich, literally have thought about it everyday since I visited. One of the best sandwiches of my life. Not to mention the ambiance of LOTR on the TV, drowned out by Greta Van Fleet and Led Zeppelin, was excellent vibes for a solo dining experience, my first time visiting, definitely will not be my last

Taylor W.

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant! My husband and I are regulars and it's amazing every time! I love the hot Italian beef, my husband loves the Cesar wrap.

Daniel W.

Yelp
Sandwiches are EXCELLENT, service is polite considerate and non-presumptive, and the atmosphere is exactly what I want from a soup den! 9.7/10! (waits can be longer due to how strong their other facets are) Please go and give em some love!

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches in a cool, divey, yet curated atmosphere. They were very busy when we went for lunch on a Saturday but managed to provide excellent service through the chaos. Also, despite the bar-like vibe, it was a great place to eat lunch with my four year old. GO TO CHOWDERHEAD!
google avatar

Ken H.

Yelp
Relaxed local sandwich great for lunch. Excellent customer service and their Philly cheesesteak is amazing ! Great chowders too. Feels like you can't go wrong with the food here

Yelp
Come hungry, leave smothered in sauce and smiles. Chowderhead delivers big flavors and messy goodness--we're already planning next round. Friendly fast service. Chowderhead 825 N Monroe St, Spokane, WA What We Ordered at Chowderhead: * Avocado Toast + Tots (Vegetarian) - Chèvre, cherry tomato, herbs on sourdough. No egg, still a standout. * Meatball Sub (Monday deal -$2) - Burrata, marinara, basil--saucy and unforgettable. * Kimchi Fried Chicken Sandwich - Spicy, runny, crunchy, creamy. A full flavor punch. * Side Salad w/ Ranch - That ranch? Top-tier.

Yelp
I hit the daily specials, they're all great. Appreciate this safe space for all. Thanks!!

Yelp
The food was delicious and the service is excellent. The wait for our table was about 5 mins even though they were really busy on a Saturday. We came in November when it was cold outside so we had to wait in the entry way which is really small and I got stuck behind the area where the door swung open so I felt like I was always in the way of customers leaving. The wait for the food was long, but worth it I recommend the clam chowder and the Pork Belly Cubano crispy and packed with flavor without being too salty.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Charming little spot tucked away on Monroe, easy to miss from the outside, and like many downtown locations, street parking is your best bet. The food was delicious! I ordered the avocado toast with a side of tater tots, and was pleasantly surprised by the generous portion, more like a bowlful than a side! The avocado toast itself was flavorful, with a nice touch of dill and plenty of tomatoes. They do have cold brew on the menu, though I was a bit disappointed to see no plant-based milk options available. Would eat here again, hoping they add more vegan options in the future!

Yelp
Great place for an early Brunch! Come at 10am and avoid the crowds. The Smash burger was delicious with fries while the Pork Belly Reuben was equally tasty. Service was fast and the wait staff friendly. Overall, a very good brunch experience.
google avatar

Rachel I.

Yelp
So fucking delicious. The vibes are fun and punk rock. The American cheese on the smash burger was DIVINE.
google avatar

Abbey B.

Yelp
This place absolutely slaps. Feels like you're in a chowder house in coastal Maine but the people are nicer. Can't wait to go back
google avatar

Selene S.

Yelp
Saw this place on TikTok and glad I stopped in! The staff is really friendly, and they had some great music playing. The food was great I really enjoyed the flavor of the meatballs on the sandwich. The chowder is really the star of the show. So many clams, and it was toward the end of the day, when they were running out of some things. Will definitely be back!

Roberta W.

Yelp
Always the best! I can only speak to the hot Italian beef and tots, it's all I've ever had. Crusty fresh bread, juicy tender, spicy beef. My husband loves the chowder. They never disappoint. Sit at the bar, you can watch the well-oiled system that is their kitchen, as well as all the great looking food that comes out of it.
google avatar

Christina D.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches and you guessed it - chowder! I'm from Seattle area and love me some chowder, but this might be the best I've ever had. So the place lives up to the name! Great service too. Very friendly and attentive! Can't wait to come back and try more items on the menu!
google avatar

Yelp
It's very good, great soup, awesome sandwiches. I've been here three times never disappointed. The staff works hard and they are always busy.

Yelp
Will start by saying that we were very happy with the food here. Everything is made to order and made from scratch. Before you read further, in spite of everything, we will come back because the food was really THAT GOOD! Really good! Our sandwiches and chowder were fresh and delicious. Portion was significant - no complaints there. Here come the challenges: - One person was doing all of the wait service, phone and carry outs. He was very nice and was working very hard, but it was at the expense of the quality of service. To emphasize, not his fault. They had a full restaurant and were just understaffed. - Ordered quickly, but then food took 45 minutes to be served. Delicious and worth the wait, but 45 minutes is a long time for cold sandwiches! - We felt uncomfortable asking for anything because our server was so busy. Our table was not wiped down when we sat down, so we wiped it ourselves. No silverware at first. One napkin for two people. Room temperature water, no ice. No status such as "your order is coming soon." We should have spoken up, but he was handling so many other things. - One would argue that we deserved this lukewarm experience, since we came at the lunch rush, so we will only blame ourselves for coming to lunch at lunch time. Next time, we will arrive expecting that it could be a long-ish wait for the food. We will be back, however, because again, the food was superb and maybe next time, they won't be so short staffed.

Yelp
Definitely the best clam chowder I've ever freaking had! The way they give you all the bread all sliced up and grilled up make my heart happier than you can know! (Bread addict here) the sour dough bowl was immaculate! Cuddos to the chef! I will definitely be back with friends! Can't wait to check out there meatball Monday! But honestly don't know how I'm supposed to order anything other than their clam chowder bowl now that I've had it! It's just that good! I'd add pictures, but I got so excited. I ate most of it before I could snap any pictures. Good location with easy street parking. The vibe inside is kinda dive bary in a way I love! Would highly recommend this place and their clam chowder bread bowl!
google avatar

Otto H.

Yelp
I would honestly give this place 10 stars if I could. Tyler, our server, was freaking amazing! Straight up, the best chowder I've had in a LONG time. Kim-Cheesesteak was absolutely on point and was one of the best cheesesteaks I've had outside of Philly, or in. Excellent everything. This place is a new staple. Quality food, quality people, quality chowder. Hell yes!
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Chowderhead was pretty good. Very small interior so be prepared to wait for a table during peak times. Food was frankly very nice, but small portions and high price means it's not a great value, more a special treat. This is funny when you're talking about soup, which one typically associates with modest, day-to-day dining, but I digress. Give it a try, you'll probably love it.

Kim C.

Yelp
Very busy place, wait was short. Food and service were great! We will definitely go again when we are in town.
google avatar

Marlene W.

Yelp
This was our first time at Chowderhead in Spokane and wow it did not disappoint! We ordered the Italian hot beef and corn chowder and clam chowder. So delicious!! A must try for anyone, from the brisket to all the spices and ingredients to the bread and all is made in house.. The service was awesome as well! We will be back and will tell our family and Friends to come here they will love it as much as we did.
google avatar

LJ H.

Yelp
Best meatball sandwich! The staff is super friendly and the food is delicious! One of the few places left that believe in seasoning their food!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Had some dealings at the court house today, and since I was there during lunch, I took the opportunity to finally get into Chowderhead for some of their Smoked Steelhead Chowder. It was so good, I bought a quart to bring home for later. I was admiring all the sandwiches that people around me were enjoying. I look forward to coming back and trying one of their sandwich offerings. Chowder just seemed like the perfect thing today.

Fernando G.

Yelp
This spot has one of the best Philly cheesesteaks I've had -- flavorful, fresh, and super satisfying. The Steelhead Chowder is amazing, and the Clam Chowder is just as good. Great food, solid portions, and friendly service. Definitely worth a visit!
google avatar

Robin D.

Yelp
Food: clam chowder was tasty, as was the bread bowl. Pork belly Cuban is their creation, it is not a Cubano, and it was ok. Drinks: be prepared to pay $3 for a can of coke. Yes, for ONE can of coke Service: was good Ambiance: feels like an older diner Parking: on the street, metered parking Idk, we may give it another try.

Mitchell D.

Yelp
Amazing food, I got the Cheesesteak with fries and it's the BEST I've EVER had. They have three taps and I had the lager, also great. Super cool staff
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
Food was really good. Ambiance honestly kinda freaked us out. I'm just really torn on this one.
google avatar

Everett W.

Yelp
Stopped here to check it Chowderhead. The sandwich sign out front said "Good Food" was a misnomer. Part of the ceiling looks as if it's going to fall at any time. The place is small, the music was up really high, so it was hard to speak. Upon being seated we were informed that they were out of a couple of sandwiches. The Clam Chowder tasted as if it came straight out a can, which anyone can get at any store, take home heat up yourself; the Smash burger was a bit overpriced. The staff was on top of keeping the tables clean, but not so much as for customer service. No flatware, no napkins. Above all no parking.

Alan R.

Yelp
"Hot Italian Beef wasn,t hot, there was nothing Italian about it, I am assuming from the texture it was beef. In short, it was bland and unappetizing. Chowder was okay, but could have been canned Progresso. Service was good, ambiance was nice. Might give it another shot, but not with what I ordered. Wanted to like it, but couldn't.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
Great food & service. Parking was metered on the street. I couldn't find a dedicated parking lot for the restaurant. We had clam chowder & the Korean fried chicken sandwich. Both were very good. Good sized portions too
google avatar

Abby A.

Yelp
Best clam chowder in the INW. We have even came and bought a large container for when we do Costco crab legs at home because it just makes the meal so much better. When getting it to go they even give you a cup with all the green goodness to sprinkle on top at home when you serve it.
google avatar

Phil S.

Yelp
Food was incredible, even to go. My wife and I got the chicken ceaser sammich and it was phenomenal, the bread was AH-MAZING. She also got the chowder which she said was delicious, and my sister in law had the chicken parm, I think I'm getting that next time. Portions were generous and left us quite full. The actual space is cozy and looks like a place I would love to actually sit down and eat, nice and intimate. The staff was also super helpful and quick, even with my to go order. Will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Delfin A.

Yelp
Delicious variety of chowders. Creative recipes and friendly, welcoming staff. The smoked steelhead was to die for! You can get a generous side of sour dough to accompany your chowder. There is a special everyday. Park on East Mallon because there is limited parking but the chowder is worth walking a block. Besides, is so creamy that the walk will help you burn calories.
google avatar

Carol D.

Yelp
Omg'. Are we at the San Francisco wharf the clam chowder comes in a sour dough bread made each night for customer. Try this place there is something for everyone.
google avatar

L V.

Yelp
Sexy pants called me a ding dong, I would give it seven stars if I could. The other employe said I did a perfect Michael McDonald impression.

Mason A.

Yelp
might be the best burger i've ever had, took three rainiers and some breaks to finish

Maxwell W.

Yelp
The overall vibe of this place is great and I will die on the hill that their sandwiches are the best in town.
google avatar

Ryan W.

Yelp
Amazing and delicious cheesesteak sub with a hot tomato soup that perfectly complements the intricate flavors of the cheesesteak. Wonderful and friendly service with a local diner ambiance. Service: 9/10 Ambiance: 8/10 Food: 10/10

L H.

Yelp
Wonderful 1st experience and the music on the playlist for the evening made it more enjoyable.

Bo M.

Yelp
Here for the weekend basketball tournament and decided to try something new for Sunday lunch. Reviews seemed great so we hit up Chowder head! This might be my favorite spot in Spokane now. Cup of clam chowder was elite paired with my crispy chicken Caesar sandwich. Service was solid. Also snagged a freshly baked carrot cake for the long drive home to Issaquah and I devoured it within 30 mins. Will definitely come back soon!

Jon C.

Yelp
Our food was exceptionally good. Loved the "my loves" from our waitress. Made us feel so welcome coming from an ol' mate from England.
google avatar

Carlie L.

Yelp
I'm always stoked to find more flavorful vegetarian options around Spokane. A portobello cap in between two pieces of bread just doesn't satisfy. This week I visited Chowderhead for the first time and ordered the mushroom & lentil sloppy joe. I was SO impressed. There's a ton of flavor in this sandwich from the slightly spicy sauce; I couldn't put it down. While I was expecting the traditional tomato/ketchup base of a sloppy joe, their version was more chili/cumin forward but still very good. It came topped with fried onions which was a nice touch. The tots were well seasoned and perfectly crispy. Wish they were open a little later than 6pm. I'm going back to try the white bean crunchwrap and elote chowder next!

Todd T.

Yelp
The Chowder is amazing Service is prompt courteous with a smile Definitely Recommend The only thing you need to be prepared for is their music selection not for everyone
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
Came in for a late lunch and wanted light food. I got the avocado toast, the wife got the kimchi fried chicken. The fried chicken was way overdone, almost burnt, and like a slab of dried crumble. The kimchi was alright and the tater tots were good tots. My avocado toast was great. The coffee was just coffee. The waitress was very nice. I got some cookies to go and they were pretty good.
google avatar

Beth D.

Yelp
The team took 25 min for my order and let it sit in the window until the fries got cold (I threw them away later). When I went up to the window and asked for it to go because it had taken almost all of my lunch period for the order to get prepared, and then sat there for the rest of it, the super aggressive cook screamed 'Jesus Christ' at me and threw it in to go boxes. The waitress at the front seemed apologetic but also extremely slow and slightly incompetent. She kept asking the cook things and he kept screaming back answers in a WAY TOO LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS VOICE. It was pretty bad vibes. I also got the egg salad sandwich which was really weirdly sweet? Like it tasted like someone had smeared a bit of jelly on it and then put the egg salad. The cook also yelled out to his staff and asked whether the egg salad was a day old or longer...and they assured him only a day...but it was a very classy experience. I am hoping my gut can withstand the experience of eating sweet day old eggs. Mostly, just totally appalled by how rude everyone was there. To management - your screamy chef needs to GO!
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
On my first visit to ChowderHead today, we sampled a few items including the Clam Chowder and the Cheesesteak. We also ordered a side of fries and a local IPA, because you can't spell Spokane without I..P..A. As others have said , the Clam Chowder is excellent. It's a New England style clam chowder with scattered chunks of clam, russet potatoes and a rich creamy chowder broth. There is a hint of bay and a tiny bit of clove I think. Delicious! My only complaint is that an $8 bowl of chowder should be a little more generous.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot for breakfast or lunch. Awesome soup selection. Old school good food. Character joint.
