Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral

Visited the market over the first weekend in December. It is a really beautiful place to visit and overlooked by an amazing cathedral (whish we visited as well) In terms of the market itself it's super packed and very difficult to live around (especially close to the stage). They have all the regular Christmas market foods and gifts, and really good gluhwein. The pasta we had was really great and they were running a Tik Tok promotion so it was free.

The backdrop of the cathedral with this market and the Christmas decorations was amazing. My husband and I had already visited Cologne 10 years ago but were limited on time. We made up for it this time and even visited the cathedral which was huge and beautiful and full of incredible staied glass windows. This is a great place to visit and breathe in the history surrounding it. A must if you're in the area.

The fair is very crowded, making it difficult to navigate among the crowds, especially those walking around with red wine in hand. :) It's best not to have lunch before visiting, as the fair offers many interesting food and drink options. Christmas tree and decoration is beautiful and worth to visit. There are other fairs near the cathedral, so it's worth walking to Heumarkt also

The Cathedral is an impressive peace of architecture, it's an absolutely stunning structure worth visiting. There are a number of Christmas markets within a walkable distance from the Cathedral, starting with the one right next to it. Note if you have a pram the markets tend to get really crowded especially in the evenings, you will struggle if you have a pram or small kids, aim for the day instead of the evenings. All the markets are worth seeing, be prepared to have cash as well as Card because there are a few stands with the market that only take Cash.

Absolutely stunning Christmas market. Definitely worth a visit. Thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Lots to browse. The Christmas tree and the lights are fab. And so much nicer at night.

This market is located right beside the Dom. It is beautifully decorated and offers a great variety of food and shopping opportunities. Most stalls accept credit cards which is convenient.

This is the largest Christmas market in Köln. It is located right beside Kölner Dom and almost as soon as you exit the train station. Your first stop at any Christmas market should be for some gluhwein or hot chocolate in a souvenir mug. I always keep my mugs, although you can get a deposit back if you return it. I recommend swapping it for a clean one at the counter before you leave. The market has so many stalls and a huge variety of items to buy. It is a BIG and BUSY market so after awhile, the stalls are repetitive. The market has several sections, so if you plan to visit multiple markets, don't feel like you should visit every section of this one. The gluhwein stalls are everywhere. This is the only market in Köln where I saw raclette cheese, so I recommend trying that.

This Christmas market is literally in the shadow of Cologne Cathedral. Sausages, raclette, glühwein, potatoes, waffles, more. Wooden objects, ornaments, rolling pins, jewelry. It was quite a lot to take in at once and looming over it all was a giant Christmas tree, and above that, the cathedral. Beautiful sights, smells, sounds. Very festive, very fun, a wonderful event for the Christmas season.

One of the most beautiful spots for a Christmas market, backed up by the Dom and under a blanket of lights like a starry sky. I love the Raclette and other Alps themed booths.

This fun-filled Christmas market located right next to Kölner Dom was one of six or seven Christmas markets in downtown Köln. Undoubtedly mainly due to its premier location next to the world-famous enormous Gothic-style Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site), it's popularity is undeniable. It also seemed there were a series of two or three more markets to the south (Heumarkt) starting here. The highlight of this market was the entertainment stage under the huge Christmas tree. There was a trio of singers singing many Christmas carols and songs in German when we were visiting. It was very interesting to hear some very familiar Christmas songs in German even the ones originally composed in English like Jingle Bell Rock and White Christmas. The crowd got into it, and they sang them, too. It's a very nice way to spread Christmas cheers. Besides the weihnachtsmarkt-staple glühwein, potato pancakes, crêpes, and many other food and drinks were available here. There were pretty decent number of huts with merchandise, too. Overall, it's a very nice weihnachtsmarkt to celebrate Christmas German-style!

Of all the markets in Cologne this location was by far my favorite. They had the biggest crowds and maybe even more markets too. A warm annual mug (for purchase) with some spiced gluewein in hand. This is what makes for a bearable winter here. Meeting up with friends or colleagues over some warmth and holiday cheer in a mug. The wood kiosks were all vending potato pancakes or Christmas ornaments or this and that kind of crafts. This was such A wonderful place to really see the full extent of the Christmas spirit here in Germany. I've never seen a Christmas market like the ones here.

This is one of the most beautiful, festive Christmas markets in all of Germany! The setting is absolutely spectacular and is perfect if you love to take photos. The twinkling holiday lights with the large cathedral as a backdrop is a photographer's dream. The stalls here are well laid out with plenty of space to walk around -- so even on a busy night, the market won't feel wall-to-wall crowded. I really enjoyed all of the food stands here, it was one of the only markets I visited in the country that had yummy raclette cheese. The giant spaetzle pot was a hit as well. You can't go to a German Christmas market and not buy the city's special gluehwein mug (and repeatedly fill it up). Great souvenir and a great way to warm yourself up on those chilly winter evenings. The Cologne Christmas market is worth a stop and is easy to get to since the city is a main transport hub. The main train station is literally right across the street from this market, making it an easy day trip from elsewhere in Germany. I can't wait to go back for another visit!

This is a nice big market next to the church and only a couple of blocks from my hotel (or across from the train station) So i wound up here every night and during the day. In the evening when people get off work it gets busy. It seems lots just come for a drink (there are official market stands for drinks all over. I really enjoyed all the lights overhead around the tree, That part of the market always had performers playing music. The whole market was somewhat maze like I kept disscovering new things when i went. I think this is the largest with the most shops. The food was good here with lots to choose from. I especialy like the Roclette place against the church (flame melted cheese and garlic over bagette). While the food would be reason enoph to come, there are also lots of shops selling christmas stuff and gift stuff, I bought about everyone on my list something from here. Tip: when you buy a drink you pay a deposit that you can get back from any of the drink stands (around 2 euro's) or you can keep it. Every market in town has its own design, new every year. They make a good cheap souvineer. I have a set of 5 mugs from the 5 markets I went to.

It was great visiting the Christmas Market in front of Cologne Cathedral early December. Many stalls were selling hot wine, other drinks, roasted nuts, candies, chocolates, hot food, and all kinds of holiday decorations. I could actually smell happiness in the air, and somehow got drunk from the mulled wine - maybe it was the temperature of the wine?

My personal favorite Christmas market in Cologne. Set against the backdrop of the Dom, the Christmas colors and decor are impressive and a must-see. Skeptics may complain that it's a touristy spot with lots of crowds, but I personally love visiting this Christmas market. Beautifully decorated with glittering lights, the huge lit tree reminds me of small floating lanterns like the scene in Disney's Tangled :) Plenty of delicious food and beverages, albeit priced higher for the holidays. Even the gifts selection and vendors' stands seem classier and less cheesy than at other Christmas markets and not just something you would buy for your grandmother. Take lovely photos, enjoy the rich and warming flavors of Glühwein (including berry-flavored), and have a great time. :)

In front of the cathedral is the largest Cologne Christmas market with160 beautifully decorated stalls, the majestic cathedral as a backdrop, the tallest Christmas tree in the Rhineland. It's probably got the most choices for food and even had mead for sale! Value 4/5 Atmosphere 4/5 very busy Service 4/5 Quality 4/5 16/20

A lovely atmosphere although the layout is not as good as the Neumarkt one, making it easy to miss a stall. Throughout the day and the night, there's live music under the tree, with the Dom as the backdrop. Very festive, nothing unique here (compared to the other Cologne markets) but also very busy so for that reason, I prefer a short walk down to the Alter Markt and visit that one, where there's a plethora of antique Christmassy goods and beautiful little sheltered Glühwein huts.

When I think of a German Christmas market, this is exactly what I think of. The lights, the stalls, the trees, and the backdrop of some timeless European feature. This market is the biggest in the city (we went to 6 of 7!) and it's also in the heart of the city. There were so many stalls and it was quite a maze to see everything. That being said, it was fun to just wander around and figure out if you want to go right or left. Usually we followed our noses to the Glühwein and various delicious foods. I highly recommend the meat on a stick. So good! Just FYI, it seems that the mugs they sell with the Glühwein has an extra 2.50 deposit that you might not realize and each market has their own mug made which is really neat! The only reason I just couldn't give it 5 stars was that it was packed. Many times it felt like we were just being herded around. And honestly, that took away from the experience. One thing you have to remember though, it is the biggest market in the city, it's right next to the most famous landmark in the city and right outside the central train station. TIP: Don't take the main entrance, walk around the market and find another way in. It helps with getting away from the crowd a bit.

I think this weihnachtsmarkt is the signature of Cologne. To be honest, with the best view on Dom Cathedral and the big string of lights hanging on top of the big tree in the middle. It is definitely very pretty for the eyes. People say the Dom-Hotel serves the best Glühwein, because it used really good wine as the base for their Glühwein. I have to agree, they do serve very delicious Glühwein here. In Dom Christmas market, you can find a platform where people perform. Usually Christmas songs in Kölsch, where you can also dance and sing-a-long with the crowd. That is definitely christmas ambience you are experiencing. :D

So close to the train station and the Dom, this Weihnachtsmarkt definitely has its charm. Although I've been to different ones around Koeln, this one is definitely the most memorable. Please stop by!

Wonderful and nice Christmas market in the center of cologne. Alot of nice little stalls and a rich variaty of foods and drinks, such as "Glühwein" (red wine flavored with herbs and christmas flavors). If you come to Cologne in the christmas time, you should visit this great christmas market.

Had an incredible time at the Weihnachtsmarkt in Köln. There is something for everyone there. There is all kinds of food, homemade gifts, entertainment, and decorations. It is extremely crowded though. I made it through and I have pretty extreme social anxiety, so you should be good as long as you can maneuver through a crowd. There is nothing more beautiful than Germany at Christmastime.

The Christmas Markets in Koln are amazing. It doesn't get any better than Germany! Holland and Belgium really try to follow behind the German tradition, but they can't even compare. Germany is much better when it comes to the Christmas fairs. Make sure to add this to your bucket list for things to do for the holidays.

"During the Christmas season there are many Christmas markets but only a few as renowned as the markets in Cologne. There are actually seven separate Christmas markets each with it's own theme in different parts of the city. There was one themed around angels and another of gnomes. People come from all over the world to shop at the markets for gifts, treats and decorations. There are lots of booths selling trinkets to clothing mostly all Christmas themed. In addition there's plenty of gluhwein to be sampled. Each market had it's own specific mug you got to keep when you bought their gluhwein. There were pastries, sausages, candy, meats and dishes to sample and eat. The atmosphere was festive and plenty of people were having a great time. There also was a train shuttle that took you to four of the markets. I'd say the only downside is that there were so many people it was often hard to move about. If ever you're in the area around Christmas time you owe it to yourself to check out the Christmas markets.

The Big One. Home to the largest and busiest of Cologne's Christmas Market, the Kölner Dom is a breathtaking location for the dozens of stalls and thousands of revellers that make the markets so famous. The atmosphere is buzzing all day and night, with the crowds occasionally bringing the whole place to a standstill. You might find the scrum of people a bit of a hassle at times, but it's nothing that a hot cup of Glühwein can't make better!

What a sensual feast - from the Gluhwein to the wurst, the music and the electric atmosphere. Five or so separate markets throughout the city that are fantastic entertainment, You will want to go again and again.

Sepectacular atmosphere, beautifully put together and some of the better stalls for a christmas market. If only it wasnt so crowded!
