Charleston’s Hidden Gems: Best Bars, Restaurants, Parks, and Shops | Eater

"Tucked away on a side street off of the main thoroughfare of King Street, it’s easy to miss Christophe’s entirely as you wander the city. But make sure to detour to this shop that highlights incredible hand-made chocolates, as well as pastries, macarons, and coffee. Christophe Paume is a third-generation French chocolatier who married an American and decamped to Charleston where the couple opened their whimsical shop full of afternoon snacks and gifts to bring home." - Vox Creative

Christophe on Society in Charleston is one of the best patisseries on earth! The almond croissant is a masterpiece...flaky, with perfect amounts of almond paste, powdered sugar and sliced almonds! And the fruit tarts are heavenly!

Google
Had a wonderful experience choosing some chocolates here. Get a gift box for yourself along with one as a gift for someone else because you will not want to part with these chocolates. Welcoming store in a quaint old light blue house on a side street in Charleston specializing in making chocolates and pastries. Worth the experience alone!

I've been in Charleston a long time and never knew about this place until recently. Wow! Located between Meeting and King Streets on Society, the pastries, the chocolates, everything here is delicious and just as good, priced right! From the little cakes of mousse to the chocolates you will not be disappointed in the taste. No doubt this place will be responsible for ten of my pounds at some point, LOL!

I'm completely in love with this place! Everything is so beautiful and delicious!!! Their hot chocolate is wonderful!

Google
The best almond croissant I’ve ever had! The workers are so sweet and helpful, me and my friends felt so welcomed. Will definitely return next time I’m in Charleston :)

Google
The chocolates and macaroons were beautiful, and the employees were lovely. I try and find good macaroons whenever I travel, so I was really excited about these, and the presentation in the packaging was absolutely beautiful… but they fell short flavor wise. All the fruit flavored ones tasted overpoweringly artificial. The other flavors, like the chocolate and the salted Carmel were absolutely delicious!

Best macarons and truffles. Try the dark chocolate blue cheese one, you won't regret it.

Google
Cute dessert shop with chocolates, macarons, tarts, pastries, coffee, and more! I stopped in to pick up some treats to bring home with me after a visit. The shop is welcoming with friendly staff who are patient beyond belief while you hum and haa over which chocolate and macaron flavors you want. Theres a wide selection of artisan chocolates, from white to dark chocolate, fruit to solid chocolate, filled chocolates and truffles, and "typical" flavor combos to unique ones. They also had chocolate dipped oranges. I grabbed an assortment of chocolates that were all delicious. The truffles were on the smaller side compared to most, but still full of flavor and quality chocolate. The macarons could have benefited from a tad more filling, but there was enough for flavor and the shells were perfect. The pastries looked amazing and I debated grabbing a couple. They had tarts, croissants, savory items, and breads. There was also a selection of cakes, both larger slices and smaller sizes assortments. A good amount were sold out, but the ones left looked amazing. A full coffee menu is also available, as well as packaged chocolate options if you're in a hurry. One piece of advice is to go earlier in the day if you want a full selection of flavors. We stopped in around 4pm on a Sunday and there were macaron flavors sold out for the day and I imagine some pastries were gone too

Yelp
Most inviting little shop tucked away off King St. we were greeted immediately by, not only by a pleasant, calming voice but by the aroma of subtle sweet notes of chocolate and pastries. Very reasonably priced for such high quality, visually pleasing delights. I was with my 9 year old granddaughter. We choose 8 special chocolates for her to share with her older sister, an individual vanilla cheesecake for my daughter an individual chocolate torte for my son in law and a variety of macrons for my self and my husband. You MUST try for yourself. You'll be back!

Yelp
Mmm! Finally a place with good donuts here! Don't even tell me that you all like bkedshop here...these are flaky, sugary, filled with a great vanilla filling which isn't overpowering. The lady working was nice and they have a cute mural and tables on the side for you to eat! Pricey but support the small guys!

Yelp
This is our most favorite place to indulge. So many delicately delicious French desserts. However, today we found the most yummy caramel pecan tart. Basically, the French version of pecan pie, but better. Toasted pecans with caramel sauce, topped with cream, and dark chocolate. Hopefully they'll make a larger version for the upcoming holidays.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in downtown Charleston. I wouldn't have found it if I didn't do some research before our visit as the store is a little hard to find. I am happy we stopped by as the macaroons I got were the most delicate I've ever had. I wish I would have gotten more but at this point we've already been to several dessert shops. I was starting to get sugared out lol. I would like to take one of the classes if we come back to Charleston.

Yelp
I stopped in with my kids after passing by a few times. They have an absolutely amazing selection of baked and chocolate goods and some standout coffee. I got the chocolate-dipped orange slices and an almond croissant and a 16 oz Stella (coffee with chocolate). I loved it all! The almond croissant was not super sweet at all, more like a true almond paste than a marzipan inside, and very flaky. The oranges were great, and the Stella was a nice treat that also was not overly sweet. My kids really enjoyed their brownies and cheesecake as well. The staff was extremely friendly and I felt the prices were very fair; abut what I would spend at a Starbucks, but much higher quality! I can't wait to return! J.Ja

Yelp
It seems obvious that Charleston would have a few places like this, but I can't recall having found a chocolate shop I liked. This place had a mouthwatering pastry display, and the mousse cake I got was as indulgent as it looked. The various packaged chocolate bars looked worthwhile, and they offered drinking chocolate as well. Perhaps on a cooler day I'll try that.

Yelp
Adorable shop tucked away right off of King Street. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. I chose an almond croissant and a small Stella (coffee & chocolate). Both were absolutely divine! The delicate layers of the croissant were perfect- flaky and crisp on the outside, and soft & airy on the inside. The almond filling was perfect and complimented the pastry. Not to be outdone, the Stella was a made-to-order coffee drink, one that was worth the wait for it to be curated! The chocolate added to this drink was rich and not too sweet- a perfect drink that I enjoyed hot, but you can also order iced. I will definitely remember this shop for gifts- an assortment of artisan chocolates would be a unique gift from Charleston!

Yelp
Great chocolate. Very creative creations. Coffee was good. Had some tarts that blew me away. A must try.

Yelp
I DIED AND WENT TO HEAVEN. This place is decadent and yummy and even more yummy. This place offers pastries and chocolates galore. Everything is made in house and the options are not lacking. I indulged in a 72% cacao chocolate and an eclair and the other person in my party got the apple tart. Everything was delicious but we favored the chocolate over the pastries. In addition to the multitude of sweets they also offer coffee and gifts.

Yelp
We've stopped in on our three visits to Charleston over the years. We found it by luck the first time and have made a point to come back every time after. The baked goods are amazing. We've enjoyed many chocolate croissants, the French 'donuts,' caneles and even the chocolate. Get there early because things sell out quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
Looking for something sweet and found the chocolate shop. Off the beaten path, small carry-out shop, but completely worth the trip for craft high-end individual-sized desserts! Definitely going back! Macarons, croissants, chocolate truffles! So good.
google avatar

Claire C.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Charleston. I have purchased so many macarons and croissants from here over the years and they have been amazing every time! I will always recommend everyone I know to come here
google avatar

Yelp
If there's one thing I could never get enough of, it's donuts. Particularly this one! You might think this place is only for chocolates, but don't sit out on the pastries! The French donuts from here came highly rated from a friend and when I traveled to Charleston, it became one of my must-haves. They make extremely small batches so be prepared to be there early or you may or get one! I had to come back more than one day before I finally scored one. There was a lot of built up anticipation for it to deliver, and it did. This babe was phenomenal. Cinnamon sugar on the outside, ooey gooey icing on top, and some otherworldly deliciousness piped in throughout on the inside made this by far the best donut I found in Charleston. Covid protocols are in place so only one customer/group is allowed in the store at a time. Service staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient so the line moves quickly.

Yelp
I love the chocolates here! It's definitely an art to make these chocolates. I haven't found a truffle I don't like. The flavors come out so well and taste amazing. Service every time I go in is pretty decent and it loooks pretty clean.
google avatar

Eustina K.

Yelp
These chocolates melt right off in your mouth, you can tell they are quality chocolates! The flavors are also very strong and distinct-- my favorite was the one with praline. Not only that, the chocolates look beautiful and they have a huge selection of unique flavors to choose from. Such a cute little shop, definitely check it out if you are in charleston!
google avatar

Yelp
I'd been to Christophe's many times when I lived in Charleston and knew even then that it was a little bit pricy. Sometimes I just needed a fancy chocolate or macaron so I knew what to expect and splurged and loved every bite! My most recent visit on my vacation last summer (August/September 2022) included us stopping in and hoping for a place to pee and sit down and enjoy our snack while exploring downtown on foot. Unfortunately they have most of the shop closed off due to covid (seriously...) even though most of charleston is open and they used to have some nice outdoor seating! They obviously have their reasons and it's their business, but unless they open up more indoor/outdoor seating and commodities (bathroom), I am unlikely to return. The prices are too high for me not to be able to sit and enjoy what I bought. Used to be a nice place so I hope they'll move on from the pandemic days and get back into the hospitality business. Edit: a quick glance through more recent reviews suggests they maybe have opened up seating again. I sure hope that's true!

Soo Y.

Yelp
Although I love their artisan chocolates and cakes, it's sad that their service to customer was not as same as I expected. Hope the girl asked me how many chocolates to take and how would pack the chocolates before taking off the original pocket wraps from individual chocolates and putting these 9 assorted chocolates linto one tiny paper bag. I had to request put these chocolates to be separated by individual pocket not to mixed up and become sticky between chocolates. Despite I tild her chocolates for myself, hope this artisan chocolates are still packed nicely somehow, at least carefully with wraps in an organized way, not in randomly sticky together. While she was repackaging, already chocolates were crumbled and sticky togehter between truffles.

Yelp
Tatse .. Decent not "great" Heard.. "We don't allow pets"... put a sign up as most places allow them French? Ehhh kind of.. Much better French bakery closer to French quarter which I won't name

Jennifer L.

Yelp
WOW!!! HOW HORRIBLE!!!! My boss tried to place an order of chocolates... they said they didnt ship and that we needed to have someone pick up from them... So we did as they asked... created the shipping, scheduled a pick up twice!!! and emailed the label that Erin told us to email. Then JOY SOOOO RUDELY didnt let me even ask a question.. didnt even stop talking long enough to hear we did exactly as we were told and hung up on me then stopped answering my call. Why would you enploy someone like JOY who cant even talk to a customer long enough to actually hear them or just pass the phone on the some one that actually knew what was going on! I would NEVER EVER do business with a company that ran business this way! Who cares if the food is any good when you are treated that badly !!!
google avatar

Shruthi S.

Yelp
If you go to the same place twice in 4 hours, it probably says something. I saw their sign (bright orange) while walking down King, and made a quick detour. The display case left me drooling and I settled on a canele a a pear tart. All good intentions of sharing when I got back to the hotel. Well - I didn't share. My pastries didn't make it back to the hotel room. I took my husband back a couple of hours later and got him a strawberry Linzer Cookie and the Stella - so good. Just a hint of sweet in my mocha, and not at all cloying like other places. They were sold out of the tarts, so I'll have to go back in the morning for more. French chocolate cafe. Go there now

Yelp
This place is such a gem. We are so lucky to have an establishment like this and owners who really take pride in their products. From delicious treats to impressive gifts, they have it all. You will get fat but you will be happy and that's what really matters.
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
I had the best mixed berry tart that I've ever had in my life. This will definitely be my go to Restaurant for pastries when I am visiting in Charleston. And I wish I had the picture to post, but when I took a bite out of the pastry, I only meant to have a small piece and save the rest for later, but I ended up eating the whole thing before I was able to snap a shot. Next time, though!
google avatar

Joy D.

Yelp
The most delectable, melt in your mouth chocolates we've found since we moved here! What an amazing discovery! The pastries here are exactly like those in Europe, and are better than any others we've found anywhere in the greater Charleston area! Flakey croissants, amazing fillings. The fruit tarts are also spectacular. The hazelnut opera cake also far exceeds any other we've tried locally! They have a great variety of pate de fruit here, as well. We have yet to try everything, but we can't wait to return.
google avatar

Lori Z.

Yelp
We went to this shop while it was pouring rain. I showed some serious self restraint and ordered my family 2 chocolate croissants, one french doughnut, 1 drinking chocolate for my kids, and a French press coffee for my husband. The chocolate croissants were tasty enough but, since it was late afternoon, probably would have been better in the morning. The drinking chocolate is the best I've had. Usually, it's so thick it's hard to drink. This version has all the flavor but goes down easily. The doughnut is amazing. I've had the original cronut in NYC at my favorite bakery in the world and preferred this version. I don't know what they're doing to that vanilla custard inside, but it is truly delicious. Friendly Staff and a nice storefront. Had I been in Charleston longer I'd have gone back to try more things because I'm sure they're all worth the calories.
google avatar

Robyn S.

Yelp
A best kept secret of Charleston! Right off king, I wandered in here one day and found the most adorable chocolate shop. I ordered a Stella (coffee and chocolate) and it was better than any mocha you have ever ordered, made with their homemade chocolate! This French donut has stolen the show, but nothing here disappoints. Great friendly staff. Know you must still have a mask, but respect their wishes as a business and get yourself a Stella ASAP!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Indulging in sweet treats has been an awesome way to kick off the summer. Growing up downtown, I'm no stranger to shops on King street. But this was a sweet surprise! Let's start with the small but mighty Pear Tartlet, a sweet indulgence with amazing depth of flavor. From there we sampled the Monkey Bread. This was essentially a how-to on bread baking because it was everything you could desire from bread. An ooey-gooey, layered, and soft pull-apart masterpiece. We ended our journey with hazelnut and cappuccino truffles paired with coffee éclairs. Smooth, creamy, and crunchy powerhouses from the French artisan baker!

Yelp
I had to spend a couple of hours at the Apple store (right around the corner on King Street). In between tasks, I had to go feed the beast (aka, put more money in the parking meter) and get a snack (because I'd already missed lunch). Wandering a bit, I spied a sign that said "French Chocolate ___" - there was another word, perhaps cafe? or maybe the idea of a chocolate cafe just overwhelmed me in my state of hunger. Nevertheless, I made a bee-line for the door. I was surprised to discover the counter included the gazillion flavors of macaroons from Christophe. Just last week, someone had gifted me my first ever Christophe macaroons--lavendar, caramel, raspberry. That probably needs its very own review. So here I am in my hungry state and want a little sumpin-sumpin. The place is tiny out front, but there's both an upstairs seating area and a patio. The glass case is just stacked with confections. The friendly counter attendant and a guest offered advice and I ordered an apple tart and a coffee-chocolate drink. The tart was tasty, and the coffee might have been awesome, but it was lukewarm. Oh, well. I guess that means I need to come back and try again.
google avatar

Roger B.

Yelp
As we walked on King Street and were passing Society, we came upon this little sign promising French Press coffee and pastries. On a whim, my wife and I checked it out. Excellent! The service was super-friendly, the coffee great, and the macarons delicious! My wife loved the matcha tea with almond milk and agave to sweeten. And their French Donuts- spectacular! We stopped there every day for our last 4 days at the Ryder once we found Christophe's. If we lived here we would be regulars. So, yes, the sign worked and we are glad it was there. Check it out!!
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Place has great chocolates - it was part of a food tour and should be a must stop if you are touring downtown Charleston. The chocolate was so smooth and decadent and the macaron cookie we had was so flavorful as well. 5 stars.
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
Best spot for a high quality sweet authentic French treat! The hazelnut buche is a must have, I still dream about it. Try their stuffed chocolates, they melt in your mouth and the flavors are incredibly good, I did: lavender (blew my mind), gianduja hazelnut, praliné, sea salt caramel, peanut butter milk. All amazing! Try the cannelé (southwest France specialty), it is just delicious.
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
Their French press cold brew coffee was the best I've ever had. Highly recommend. And their hand painted truffles were beautiful and delicious.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
Chocolate perfection is offered at #ChristopheChaocolatier. We found this place on a food tour hosted by Lyndsye with #BulldogTours! We bought iced coffee, a nine piece chocolate sampler with truffles and three baguettes. All fine fine treats.
google avatar

Daniela Z.

Yelp
I'm so excited I finally found a LEGIT croissant patisserie downtown! The croissant was perfect and I kind that they make the French press coffee fresh right there. It's also perfect for some Christmas shopping - I got a couple of the chocolate bars that are wrapped in this really pretty art picture of Charleston! They had a lot of great options for gift giving.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
Christophe is originally from France and he can do no wrong. As a further testament to his dedication to the art of pastry- the man is up and baking at 3am every morning to prep for the upcoming day. If that's not love please tell me what is! His staff are genuine, helpful, and love what they do too. Going here is a quick hop on a private jet to Paris and back :) Everything tastes like perfection and love there-- go for the Caneles (if I haven't already bought them all for the day :) --they know us-- a pesto Brie and chicken on baguette Sammich, any of their rotating flavored cheesecakes, a whole baguette, and their almond crossaints. It might just make your day!! I go nowhere else for French pastry.
google avatar

Helen N Nelson Y.

Yelp
My friend who's from Charleston had told me about this place a hundred times before I came to visit Charleston. According to her (and I am pretty sure she's right), she used to have a French friend who works here and the chocolatier/ owner is also a French guy. Pros: - love love love their macarons! Some of the best macarons I've ever eaten. Their flavors are very delightful and unique. The texture is just perfect: crispy outside, soft inside. These little macarons brighten my day. - pear tart is very good too. Might be a little bit too sweet for me but my friends love it. - right downtown Charleston Cons: - they have sitting/ hanging out area upstairs. However, there is not enough light and space so everyone is squeezed in a small, dull area. Overall, it's a good place to stop by and pick up some of the sweets to treat yourself #selflove I wish I could go back to get more macarons and try their chocolates. Totally recommend this place!
google avatar

Dina W.

Yelp
If my review was solely based on how adorable the shop is, I would've given it a 4. The shop is small. It's right off King Street but it can be easily missed if you didn't know it was there. The upstairs seating is small. There's a few tables and chairs. There's also a small outdoor patio. I stopped in to grab some macaroons. They offer over 10 flavors. I got one vanilla and one lavender. They were ok. I've had better elsewhere. I think they are kinda small for $2. I didn't try anything else.
google avatar

Verna N.

Yelp
They have almost perfect macarons that are appropriately sized, fluffy, and moist with a light taste. My favorite was the chocolate macaron. They weren't all the same size and one macaron had a big air pocket. My boyfriend had the iced coffee, which he really enjoyed. I had a few sips and thought it had a smooth taste. Service was emotionless. It was weird to see how friendly the employees were to the people in front of us and then switch to a reserved attitude to me and my boyfriend.
google avatar

Allyson D.

Yelp
I popped in for a quick breakfast bite on a Sunday and was greeted promptly by a few people. I had no idea what to choose from! My eyes were darting across the case with all of the colors, large pastries and pretty chocolates. I finally decided on a chocolate almond croissant. It was so fluffy and delicious! I could have ate 5 more! The coffee was pretty tasty too. There were chocolates on display for purchasing however, I didn't notice any tables to sit at. Overall, I highly recommend stopping in for a coffee, chocolate, macaroon or large French pastry. Everything looked absolutely delicious. It's conveniently located right off of King Street.

Yelp
This place is aaaaammmaaaazzing!!! Whatever you want to call your list (itinerary, top 10 list, bucket list, etc.), be sure you put this place on there because this is probably one of the best pastry/dessert shops I have ever been to. Everything was so expertly made and so beautiful that you almost don't want to cut into them. When I say everything was delicious, I truly mean that EVERYTHING was delicious. There was not one bad item that I tried. Each and every pastry had their own unique character and taste. The most surprising aspect is how the pastries can be sweet but not overwhelmingly sweet. Some places you go to, you almost gag at how overly sweet everything is. Maybe too much glaze was used on the outside. Or maybe too much sugar was used in the baking process. But not here. All the pastries that I tried were very balanced between sweet, sour, etc. I really had such a harmonious experience eating here. If I had more time, I probably would have tried every pastry in the display case. But that just means I have to go back the next time I'm in Charleston. Fantastic place! :)

Yelp
The Opera cake is sinful. Food is always at the top.of french conversation.La presentation est magnifique. Cest delicieux. If you have never had the sophicasted Opera cake ? This is the place ...theres a layer of mousse., creme, and sponge cake giving you a taste of the entire cake in one bite!!!!

Selena O.

Yelp
The generously sized matcha latte is splendid and a lot cheaper than any I've seen in this town! The croissant was also perfect. Definitely going to be my new spot on the way to work
google avatar

Shannon N.

Yelp
One of our favorite stops on our trip! We would have loved to have sampled one of everything on the menu! The French press coffee is made to order and perfect. The staff was friendly and helpful in answering all of our questions about the items. We will definitely return on our next trip!
google avatar

Abby C.

Yelp
An adorable intimate dessert destination. The only thing it's missing is alcohol. We ordered a variety of macaroons (our favorites were the chocolate hazelnut, lemon, and raspberry) and ate them in their upstairs dining area, which was charming and romantic. The setup is unique, like a lot of other restaurants in the area, it used to be a house. If you have a sweet tooth, treat yourself to this spot- the desserts are works of art!
google avatar

Christy M.

Yelp
This is an adorable little place and I need to go back and check it out again. I didn't love the little thing that we got and shared (I can't remember what it was now either...sorry), but I have a feeling that was way more about preference than anything else. The truffles and such looked amazing. This is definitely a place worth stopping in. You'll feel like you're in a little shop in Paris. Really, so cute. The staff was also kind and helpful!
google avatar

Wendy B.

Yelp
Delicious french macarons. Just happened on to the West Ashley location. I will continue to stop in. Very pleased.
google avatar

Jihye S.

Yelp
Visited a year later and it's still a 5 star place! Especially good is their plan croissant. I have tried croissants from the cafe framboise, la patisserie, and Butcher and bee, but Christopge makes the most fragrant croissant with buttery flavor and perfect texture. I so wish they had espresso drinks..but it's a small shop, so probably too complicated. Anyways I'll always go back to this store whenever I'm in Charleston and get my gift shopping done! Plus the people who work here are really kind, pleasant, and helpful !
google avatar

Bronwen B.

Yelp
I love the French press coffee and the macaroons!! So good! We stopped at the Society street location after walking around downtown - it was a very cold day. I ordered a medium French press coffee and peanut butter macaroons. The place was pretty crowded - I'm sure everyone was wanting a hot beverage on the cold, windy day! I can't wait to check out the location in West Ashley - I want more of those macaroons! You should definitely check this place out - it's worth the visit!
google avatar

Jen F.

Yelp
This morning my friend stopped in to grab us coffee, and when she came back I was more than pleasantly surprised. The coffee was a perfect balance of not too much strength and not too little. I drank every last drop. The truly amazing thing though was the Coconut Macaroon and the Almond Croissant. I have been to Paris and back and have not had many croissant's that compare. As for the Coconut Macaroon? I'll take that morning, noon, and night.
google avatar

Zee S.

Yelp
The best Almond croissant I tasted in my life. The chocolate is to die for. There were many options for macaroons as well. The patio in the back is a great place to enjoy your dessert.
