Where to Feast on Greek Food in NYC | Eater NY

"This lavish, fancy-occasion-warranting steakhouse procures its cuts from its own butcher shop, located next door to the restaurant. Some of the dry-aged steaks aren’t simply seared; they also get a distinctly Greek treatment of olive oil, dried oregano, and salt. Most of the appetizers and sides include a small handful of Grecian standards like a trio of spreads (caviar-spiked taramosalata, tzatziki, and roasted eggplant), with some creative creations like gyro tacos topped with avocado tzatziki." - Alexandra Ilyashov

Google
NJ.com recently rated Christo’s as having the best cheesesteaks in Northeastern New Jersey (Passaic, Essex, Bergen, Hudson, and Union counties), and I must say, my taste buds agree. Real shaved ribeye, seeded rolls, and even Cooper brand American cheese, all the hallmarks of an excellent cheesesteak. I got two cheesesteaks, one with cheese whiz and fried onions, another with cooper American, fried onions, cherry peppers, an Italian long hot pepper, and chipotle aioli. The fries were typical of most Jersey delis and diners but the corn nuggets were really awesome. They’re also known to have really good breakfast sandwiches and even a Boston North Shore style hot roast beef sandwich that I will have to come back for in the future. Service was friendly, and the atmosphere was that of a typical Jersey neighborhood deli.

Christo’s Wake and Steak 1290 Broad St. Bloomfield, NJ 07003 Cheesesteak Talk about getting the best of both worlds. In addition to costing less than the average cheesesteak, the taste was phenomenal. The fresh seeded bread was soft and doughy. The ribeye cut meat was tender and juicy. #christoswakeandsteak #cheesesteaks #cheesesteaksandwich #njcheesesteaks

Google
This is the spot for a cheesesteak if you are in Northern Jersey. My son and I were in today, we are from Long Island. Yeah they have the OG cheese wiz, but it's the "new school" cheesesteak with the cooper sharp white that makes it! Great meat, great roll, just a mouthful of amazing. Hats off Christo! This spot is a winner

Google
Lamar hands down made the whole experience here 10000 times better. From the moment we got here till the very end, we were treated with the most great respect. But other than that!!! This is the best cheesesteak hands down in jersey! I've tried them all.... shout out to the chef who's the owner putting lots of love into his art. Lord definitely blessed his hands.

Google
My first visit to Christo's in Bloomfield, NJ, was nothing short of a 5-star experience, and that's entirely due to the incredible customer service provided by Lamar. He has a great aura, very pleasant and welcoming and took the time to thoroughly explain the menu, making recommendations for the most popular items. His enthusiasm alone made me feel right at home. Following his advice, I ordered the New School Cheesesteak, and it was surely worth every single penny. This sandwich is truly "heaven on earth." The quality of the ingredients is what sets it apart: the beautifully shaved rib eye, the creamy melt of the Cooper Sharp cheese, and the seeded bread that is perfectly toasted and substantial enough to hold it all together. It’s an expertly crafted cheesesteak that elevates the classic. This place is definitely 5/5, and I highly recommend it. If you are looking for one of the absolute best cheesesteaks in North Jersey, look no further. No questions about it you must try Christo's!

**Visited: 10/18/25** My husband and I came here after seeing it on TikTok—we were craving cheesesteaks and haven’t found a solid spot in NJ yet. This place *might* be it… still deciding. **We ordered:** * **New OG** (Cooper Sharp American, steak, onions) * I Customized it: lettuce ($0.35), extra cheese ($1.50), bacon ($2.00), 50/50 Whiz * **Fat Broad** (cheesesteak, fries, corn nuggets, mac sauce) * I Customized it: Cooper Sharp American, no veggies, extra cheese ($1.50), 50/50 Whiz The sandwiches were a bit sloppy because of our customizations—*loved* that part. But they ruined my New OG by putting **lettuce at the bottom**. Even after I asked them not to do that next time, they still did. Some bites were just lettuce, which was disappointing. My husband *loved* his Fat Broad. I wasn’t a fan of the mac sauce—it was too sweet for me. We actually came back the next day. I ordered the **Chicken Bacon Ranch Cheesesteak** (with lettuce and Whiz). It was flavorful, but some bites had dry chicken, which threw it off. Wouldn’t get it again. And yep—lettuce was still at the bottom. Husband got the Fat Broad again—said nothing else on the menu seemed good to him..(small menu) **BIG shoutout to the cashier at the front**—best part of the experience. Super kind to everyone, knew the locals’ orders, and made sure no one waiting was forgotten. Best customer service I’ve had in a long time. **Overall:** * Food is messy, saucy, and delicious * Customizations add up $$—they charge for everything, even lettuce and pickles * Lettuce-on-the-bottom needs to go My husband’s obsessed. I’m still 50/50.

Google
Tiktok brought me here. So glad it did. They can compete with best cheesesteaks in NJ. Thats a fact. The Fat broad is legendary and the best cheesesteak ive had since i last went to philly for a cheesesteak. Cheesesteak, so good i went back to back days looking to get a fat broad lol. However, i dont ever accept a menu item as is, i have to customize it in some way so my suggestion is to request the bread toasted and i add cheese wiz on top , so that sandwich has cooper sharp in the inside and cheesewhiz on top and chipotle sauce on the side. If you don't like a saucy sandwich this suggestion is not for you.

I've been meaning to come to Christo's since they opened, and I'm so glad I finally got to it. The New School is just an incredible sandwich, perfectly balanced and satisfying. It may seem like an excessive amount of cheese and beef, but trust that it's the right ratio of everything; they clearly know what they're doing here. I also got the Old School and while also perfectly executed, I'm never gonna get it again lol. I think the New School cannot be beat so the whiz is just a waste of time for me. Again, you gotta have it on the menu if you're a cheesesteak place and although it was perfectly made, just get the New School. Beyond the food though, this is the type of establishment that you want in your community. Real, down-to-earth people that clearly care about the food and restaurant. When I came in to pick up my order, I was treated like an old friend that was welcomed back to a neighborhood spot. They weren't afraid to blast their music in the kitchen for the whole restaurant to hear, which shows such a pride in their craft and passion for their business. I also saw that they sponsored a local kiddie baseball team, the type of involvement that makes me want to give them my patronage. While the sandwich is a little pricey, it's just the cost you have to pay for a sandwich packed with real, good quality beef these days. I cannot reccomend Christo's enough, and I'm looking forward to bringing my friends by and trying their other sandwiches.

Yelp
Stopped by Christo's wake and steak to see if it lived up to the hype, and it was even better than I thought it would be! The new school was packed with the super flavorful steak and cooper sharp cheese and onions. The French fries were also super flavorful and crispy. I lived in Philly for 3 years and this would be the best cheesesteak there too. If you're looking for a real deal Philly cheesesteak in New Jersey, look no further than Christo's. The service was also excellent and the guy running the counter kept checking on us and asking if there was anything we needed and telling us when our food would be out.

Yelp
Cheesesteaks are delicious and filling! Definitely messy so grab extra napkins! The meat is well seasoned and flavorful. The bread is fresh and soft. The cheese is really good and they're not shy with it. Service was fast and friendly.

Yelp
had the pleasure to come back with 2 work place associates. I called our order ahead since we were coming from 40mins away on a weekday lunch. We shared the chopped cheese, old school, alnee school, corn nuggets and fries. They were able to accommodate our request to cut the subs in 3rds. The guy who is running the front is very nice. Either you're a regular or first timer. He made you felt comfortable being there. When we arrived he had already arranged two small tables together for us to dine in. But, it was not necessary. We ended up sharing 1 square table so an older couple could also dine on a table. This place is definitely a treat yourself place of you're in the mood for a great cheesesteak. I introduced Cooper sharp to my amigo and they really liked the mouth feel and tang. the old school with the wiz still hits. I really liked the chopped cheese. the lettuce and tomato gives it a crispy bite with the richness of the coopersharp and big Mac sauce.

Yelp
I just wanted normal lunch but I left with the sleeps and a game changing cheesesteak experience, on my birthday of all days. I had the New School and from first bite I had that moment when the food influencer walks away from the camera out of pure bliss or Jordan throws his glasses at the wall. It was so good I had no business having this for a normal lunch meal. This is one of those I traveled for over an hour to eat here or special cheat meal meals. To top things off the service was very nice and friendly. They were rocking out to jazz which didn't fit but at the same time was perfect. There's only three or four tables in there so don't plan on eating this there, instead take it to brookdale park and strap in for the ride. What a perfect birthday meal, thanks guys!

Yelp
Cheesesteaks aren't really that hard to find. Most local pizza shops sell them. You can find them at sub shops and delis. Most diners and burger places have them. Despite this I've yet to find a really good cheesesteak anywhere north of Camden. That is until now. Christo's Wake and Steak in Bloomfield does pretty much one thing and that's cheesesteaks, and they're seriously good. The menu is filled with various varieties of beef and chicken cheesesteaks, but it fundamentally comes down to one question: are you "New School" or "Old School"? Old School is what you'd get in Philly. Right down to the Cheez Wiz. New School ditches the Cheese Wiz for Cooper Sharp, a kind of sharp, American cheese that is known for melting well. That's what I got. It comes with fried onions and that's it. You can get mushrooms and long hot peppers and a few other things, but it doesn't need any of that. The only other thing it needs is great bread, and the bread here is great. It stands up to the cheesesteaks. It's soft but doesn't sog out. The service is very friendly but be patient these sandwiches take some time to make. Also, don't plan on eating in. There are only a couple of tables. The parking situation is on the challenging side, but what true cheesesteak lover is going to let tough parking get in their way. Christo's is worth it!

Yelp
I got a recommendation for this from Reddit, but it's as solid as a cheesesteak as you're going to get outside of Philly. I don't judge anyone for going with the "new school" option, but I had to go old school with cheese whiz, cheesesteak, and onions. I didn't love having to order from a machine (I get it when there's a line but no one else was in the store). There are tables to dine in or wait, and it didn't take too long to get the sandwich. The cheesesteak appeared a little small at first (compared to like a sub sandwich), but it was so packed with meat and cheese I was super full by the time I was finished. It was a perfect balance of ingredients and packed in tightly so that nothing slipped out and got too messy. I came in around 11ish, and someone after me wanted eggs, but they said breakfast was over and the grill would be too hot with other orders to make it, so if you want breakfast late or lunch early, be aware that might not be an option. Otherwise, this is a great tasty and quick lunch spot. Plenty of free street parking available.

Yelp
Went to Christo's based on all the rave reviews I saw on Facebook. Was only about a half hour from me so bonus. I'm certainly gonna be in the minority by saying I prefer mozzarella cheese on my cheesesteaks versus Cooper Sharp, provolone, or whiz, and Christo's doesn't have mozzarella. I did get there, jalapeño jack cheese, and overall the steak was pretty good, but to be perfectly honest, I wasn't a fan of the bread. It was very dense and not as soft as I like it. I don't wanna say it was day old bread, but it had that kind of feel to it. The steak was really really good but without the cheese that I liked and without the bread that I prefer, I only give it three stars, but others disagree because their reviews are off the charts. Service was kind and I was lucky enough to get a parking spot right on the street out front.

Yelp
I feel a little embarrassed that I've lived in New York City for nearly all my life and waited until now to have my first chopped cheese sandwich. When the algorithm started pelting my social media feed with salivating images of Christo's offerings, I figured it was time to rectify things. If you've seen any pictures of these sandwiches, you already know there's no way it could taste bad. My husband got the New School, which comes with soft, seeded loaves that are absolutely loaded with a hot, gooey blend of beef, onions, and Cooper sharp American. While delectable, I actually preferred the chopped cheese sandwich, which also comes with cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and ketchup. I'm as happy with beef and cheese as the next red-blooded American, but I felt the extra veg and tangy condiments helped offset the sheer volume of cheesy beef that are stuffed into these sandwiches. While the standard orders are incredible, there's a decent level of customizability here. Not a fan of Cooper cheese? Sub it out for whiz, provolone, Swiss, or habanero jack. Not a ground beef person? Get chicken, steak, or even a veg medley instead. If it's too early in the day for chopped cheese sandwiches, they even serve up egg + meat breakfast sandwiches. In short, there's something here for everyone. Inside, there's a decent amount of tables and chairs, but with all the hype surrounding this spot it can be hard to find a seat, especially around mealtimes.

Yelp
Here's the deal. What's not to love about a no frills...Tiny spot on a strip of stores on broad street. Chalk board menu (or u can use QR code). Cooper sharp cheese and quality rib eye. Would def come back and try the roast beef

Yelp
Food and service top notch! The steak is aaaamazing. Prices beyond fair. Staff so kind and chill.

Yelp
Finally got to experience the hype. I tried two different cheese steaks; New School Cooper sharp American, Steak, Onions Pairs well with: Deftones "Back to School" & provolone & onions. I must say well worth the trip and wait.
google avatar

Ed R.

Yelp
I actually saw this place on Instagram and had to give it a try. Stopped on here on a Saturday and it was pretty busy. Was told up front the wait would be 45 minutes. In ordered and ran some errands and at exactly 45 minutes my order was ready. I decided on the chop cheese sandwich. It was very good and was a nice sized sandwich. The roll of as very good as well. Service was good. Be aware that if you come in on a Saturday it's gonna be busy. People after me were told over an hour wait. Get here early on busy days. I will be back to try the cheesesteak for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't write a whole lot of reviews even though I eat out once a day. But this is an ode to the best cheesesteak I've ever had. I've had some in Philly and NYC and this takes the cake. Had the New School with Cooper sharp. I love eggs on a cheesesteak so added eggs, onions, mushrooms and peppers. To each their own but I'm also a ketchup man on my cheesesteaks. The bread was soft and perfect. The steak flavorful. As it was coming to an end, I couldn't even have the last few bites because it was so filling but I had 'em anyway. Coming from a bougie foodie who could tell you the best Italian restaurants, steakhouses, and more in the tri-state area, this place has my ringing endorsement. They get busy so order ahead and prepare for a line.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Came here to simply try roast beef, but definitely will return for cheesesteak. I truly wanted the roast beef on the onion roll, but my hubby simply asked for roast beef and mayo on a roll, not specifying onion roll. The original RB has relish and BBQ sauce while the North Shore has horseradish and BBQ sauce. It was lean and cut super thin the way I love it sliced! Plenty of meat and Italian bread was nice and fresh. I could barely eat half as they do not skimp on portion. About 6 tables to eat at and more like a walk in type deli atmosphere. Everything was clean and the staff was pleasant. Just wish my hubs asked what I truly wanted, but next time I'll handle myself. Gladly recommend and will update once I try their cheesesteaks!

Yelp
Christo's makes an amazingly good traditional cheese-steak..hands down.... But I too have driven 100's of miles for a destination meal....drove 25 miles round-trip for Christo's but I'm not sure I'd do it again. Small shop; street parking; very friendly, informative staff. The owner keeps on top of things on social media which is cool. I see him checking out all other types of sandwich joints. He's in "the scene". Normal selection of breakfast sandwiches and a good assortment of different (beef or chicken) cheese-steak sandwiches. They use high end Cooper American (deli style) cheese (or whiz, whichever you prefer.) I would stick with cheese-steaks only when you come here ( note: I arrived too late to get a breakfast sandwich, so no review on that) --New School Beef cheese steak was awesome; Simply a cheese steak with onions and Copper American (the Old school is with Cheese Whiz) -- Hail Caesar! Chicken Cheese steak, made with Lettuce, Caesar Dressing, on "Crouton" Garlic Bread, was good but very rich & filling. A little too much. Excellent french fries and corn nuggets! IMO what would have made it 5 Stars: a) There is no set time when they stop serving breakfast. It could be 1030am one day...12 noon another; either set a time or get a bigger grill. b) The Roast Beef & Sloppy Joe sandwich (a cold sandwich) has cole slaw as part of the main ingredients; if you're out of coleslaw, pull the sandwich for the day; otherwise its basically a plain roast beef on rye sandwich that does not make a good first impression. ( did we miss the Sloppy Joe part? didn't see or taste it on our sandwich) FYI--the roast beef was cooked perfectly though c) Expand your beverage selection. A used soda case is not that expensive; offer more than just cans of Coke, Diet Coke, ginger ale, Motts apple juice , and water. Christos has been getting great reviews and a lot of positive mention on social media. Now's the time to fill in those gaps and make it huge.

Yelp
Their cheesesteaks live up to the hype! The quality of the meat, cheese and BREAD is top notch. The steak itself could have a tad bit more flavor but honestly I did not mind it the way it was because you were able to taste the flavor or the cheese and bread all separately. I got the "new school" and added mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, mayo. It comes with cooper cheese, which gives it a rich velvety flavor/texture. Definitely one of the best cheesesteaks in the area.
google avatar

Jocelyn L.

Yelp
I have been excited to try this place for a while and finally had the chance. We ordered an old and a new cheese steak. The old has cheese whiz and the new has a white cheese. Definitely loved the new cheese steak and it's more than enough food. I was full after eating half. They have seating so you can eat inside, but we took ours to the park. There was plenty of meat, a good ratio to the cheese and bun. So tasty!

Yelp
@christoswakeandsteak - Bloomfield, NJ Christo's has been blowing up over the last year or so for having a new school and old school style cheesesteak, but I came for this North Shore Beef sandwich. Not familiar with what it is? Well, neither was I. It's a toasted bun with a slice of cheese, stacked high with a quality rare roast beef, slathered in a unique tangy and savory bbq sauce with horseradish and light mayo. *Warning* this sandwich is dangerously messy and they even serve it to you with some gloves! I have a hot take. This is probably a top 10 sandwich I've ever had. You can taste every layer of each ingredient through every bite. This is a must try sandwich! Shout out to the staff who were getting slammed during lunchtime, but they were hustling getting orders out. Super friendly customer service. Good food isn't always fast food, and this is worth waiting for!

Yelp
Review from a poor man. This was the second time I have been here. Brought the wifey this time. Got new school steak. The pros and the cons The pros. The roll is a tasty seeded roll. There is a good amount of cheese. It's not a bad price for the sandwich either. The cons. I don't feel the steak was a little underwhelming in taste and the onions are so cooked into it that I don't even notice them. It's worth the stop on in to try a decent North NJ cheese steak (since it's so hard to find in NNJ). But in my top cheese steaks? No. But definitely scratches the itch for a cheese steak.

Brad Q.

Yelp
I just don't understand the hype. Fries were the definition of mediocre. Steak was fine, not special. Maybe I'm not the target audience, but I tried two different cheese steaks and thought they were both just alright. Even the bread was just ok. And skip the baked potato. Some places offer a twice baked potato... this one was more like half-baked. Ordered through app and then got a message about the 45 minute pickup time. They were right on time with that, but I wouldn't have ordered in the first place if I'd known it was going to wait that long when ordering on a weekday at 1pm. This place seems to have a loyal following... more power to them. Nothing was terrible, but I didn't eat a single thing that I want to eat again.

Yelp
DO YOURSELVES A FAVOR & EAT HERE! I traveled 850 miles to Christo's Wake and Steak, and it was hands down the BEST cheesesteak I've ever had in my life. Great service, unique flavors and HUGE portions. In a quaint neighborhood, might I add. I had the pleasure to meet Christian, the owner, nice guy. His motivation is crystal clear, to bring amazing food to the community that nobody else had. Everything from the ribeye, roast beef, cheese to bread, is all handpicked for its quality...and as i'm observing the store filling up with customers, it showed upon taking my first bite. It's evident that this is more than just a restaurant, it's a passion project. A husband and father of two, who's there everyday making sure his customers get the experience that he expects. Something that you rarely see nowadays. So do yourselves a favor, ignore the faceless avatars that leave one star reviews here. Their diets mostly consist of cardboard fast-food chain items. It's not entirely their own faults, their opinions are just meaningless & just weren't raised right. Blame their parents.
google avatar

Rich V.

Yelp
Solid sandwiches but could use some tweaking. Bread for the CS wasn't fresh and needed some salt and pepper and a little more cheese. North shore was plentiful but again needed some seasoning. The sauce was for the north shore was great though. Worth the try, but doubt I need to return.

Jean-Paul B.

Yelp
While it looks like a small hole-in-the-wall in a mini strip mall, this without a doubt the best cheesesteak place in Northern New Jersey (if not the entire NYC area....). We have tried all the various cheesesteaks, including the New and Old Schools as well as the Full of Hell and some build-your-own (adding lettuce, tomato, and mayo to the New School is a personal favorite). The bread is perfect, the steak is absolutely delicious and the Coopers American Cheese was melts into it like a sauce. Be ready to wait if you go during the lunch rush but it is worth it. The guys behind the counter really try to help everyone. We will be regulars!
google avatar

Yelp
Tonight's video is a serious one for me. Not only because this is easily the best cheesesteak I've ever had in North Jersey, but also because the North Shore Beef (NSB) sandwich is just as good, maybe even better. Welcome to Christo's Wake and Steak in Bloomfield. I want to add that the owner and the employee working the counter were both incredibly nice and helpful. The cheesesteak I got is "The New School". This is fresh shaved ribeye (no gristle might I add) with fried onions and Cooper Sharp on a seeded roll. If you order the old school it comes with whiz instead. Good amount of meat, tasty roll, cooper is just so good, and at a good price ($12.50). The North Shore beef is a massive pile of rare cooked roast beef topped with a tangy bbq sauce from Massachusetts (the owner drives there to get it), cooper sharp, and horseradish sauce on a toasted onion roll. These flavors together were fantastic. It's so messy they give you gloves to wear! I used roughly 17 napkins . Also had some fried corn fritters topped in a Big Mac style sauce that were really tasty. If you haven't been here yet and you're in the area, you should absolutely check this spot out. Christo's certainly Didn't Suck!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place on ig and boy it had us sold. The very next morning we planned to have brunch here and it did not disappoint. We got to the place at around 10:30 and was able to order right away. We got the old school and the new school and *chef's kiss* it was excellent! The cheese of the new school was so silky and just something I've never had before! We also got a breakfast sandwich for our kids. They usually don't eat the whole sandwich (like leave the bread or just eat the meat) but my four year old killed it! She ate the whole sandwich on the spot. Will we ever go back? YES! No doubt!

Mark A W.

Yelp
Clean. Great Customer Service. Now let's talk about the cheesesteak. I was really looking forward to this as it was being marketed as a Philly style cheesesteak. The actual meat itself was very tender, juicy, and well seasoned. What I was really looking forward to was the actual role that would be utilized for the cheesesteak. In Philly, a lot of the restaurants that serve cheesesteaks use a seeded special roll. It is typically a little crusty, so there is a little gift to it. Crystal had the seated roll, but it was more dough. That was a little disappointing. In terms of cheesesteaks that I've had in New Jersey on the scale of one to 10 I will give crystals cheesesteak and 8.25 In terms of, which is in Philadelphia, which I considered the best cheesesteak overall., I would give the cheesesteak a 7.1 I would recommend that you try the cheesesteak at Cristos if you are 30 minutes or less away.

Yelp
Different Cheesesteak #1206. I got a cheesesteak with fried onions. Pete Genovese's #11 cheesesteak in NJ. I saw they had 3 meat options for their cheesesteaks, steak, chicken & ground beef. I asked for steak. I'm pretty sure I got ground beef. I was really tired the day I went so I didn't investigate further. As far as a ground beef cheesesteak. It was really good. Nice roll. A lot of cheese mixed very well with the meat.

Snacks ..

Yelp
Lots of times you see these social media reviewers bragging about a place and you go there and it's not even close to as good as they claim! Chritos wake and steak lives up to the hype! Best cheesesteak I've had in a long time. The steak was amazing, Cooper Sharp American cheese makes it that much better and the bread was fantastic! Can't wait to go back for more!

I would give this place 10 stars! Best cheesesteak I've ever had. We ate one there and got one to go. Should have got two! We drove an hour 15 mins to get there and spoke with Lamar, helpful over the phone even more in person! This place has a great reputation for a reason! We'll be back

Yelp
I came to Christo's Wake and Steak after seeing them on Instagram... We walked in and was IMMEDIATELY greeted. We said we're new to the place and the guy behind the counter was very gracious and explained the menu .. We decided on The NEW school cheesesteak which is a cheese steak with milk based cheese (NOT CHEEZ WHIZ) grilled onions and grilled mushrooms.. THAT CHEESE WAS BOMB !!! It was very tasty with the hero bread w/ sesame seeds (my fav) I really enjoyed my time there, everyone was friendly (including who I believed to be the owner) came out and greeted us and made sure everything was ok. The only caveat I would say is they really don't have a great selection of things to drink .. other than that my experience was very positive.. I would go back . Don't expect an elegant dining room ( That's not what this place is about ) it's about quality meat served by quality people

Yelp
Cheesesteak was great. However, fries, cheesesteak and two waters was $24. I can do the same thing in my town with two beers for $24. Sandwich was great, don't get me wrong. I'll probably go back & skip the fries and an extra water. Service was about a 15 minute wait. I ate there and the ambiance is nothing special.

Yelp
My main food goal when I visit the north is to get a good sandwich. I was doomscrolling food places in Bloomfield and came across wake and steak. People were RAVING. We weren't disappointed. We got the cheesesteak old school and Hail Caesar. Both were delicious. We added pickled jalapeños to ours when we got home and it enhanced the flavor even more. They are not shy about the protein portions either.

Yelp
Kind of a hole in the wall but clean. Absolutely bangin new school cheesesteak and their bread is perfect. Service is friendly and helpful, though the only place they fall way behind lightning-fast Philly classics. I've eaten a lot of steak sandwiches. This is clearly the best in NJ, and as good or nearly as good as some of the best in Philly (Jim's etc, better than Pats & Gino's).

Yelp
Order ahead (from 7am to 3 or until they run out). This hole in the wall is worth the drive and let me tell you why. It's the meat. The bread and the old school wiz. Service is with a smile and did I say order ahead? Don't be like me. Half an hour wait is normal. I'm patient and medicating first. Cranium from New Mexico before I tuck into the best cheesesteak anyplace. Yep. I'm a stoned fan!!!!

Yelp
Ok, this place is the real deal. Came here on a recommendation from a friend. First suggestion.... They close at 3pm. We got there at 1:45pm and at 2pm they were sold out. That was a good sign. Everything is made fresh to order. We were told it was going to be a thirty minute wait but it wasn't quite that long. While we waited, they gave the customers some pickles to snack on. I got the one marinated in hot peppers. Very good. Inside is no frills. Very casual and low key. What do you really need? It's a Cheesesteak joint. We got ours to go anyway but people were eating inside. I went with the "new school" which is with provolone. My wife got the old school which is with whiz and our son got the Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak. We shared the old school and new school and personally the one with the provolone was absolutely phenomenal. Extremely flavorful and perfectly done. Well worth the wait. My son said the Buffalo Chicken was one of the best he had. If you're in the area, get to this place and get there early!!!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. No frills inside but clean. The counter guy was very friendly. About 5 tables inside. The menu is clever, very clear in its descriptions and prices. I ordered the Old School cheesesteak as this was my first visit.

Yelp
The food was excellent as was the service. Ambiance? Who cares! We got caught in traffic and were lucky that they were still serving around 1:40pm. Worth every penny.

Yelp
Christo's Wake & Shake is the truth! I made a one hour and 20 minute round trip to pick these up: two New School Cheesesteaks (wit Cooper sharp American & onions; if you want wit wiz, you need to order their Old School). I'm almost glad I just moved 40 months from Bloomfield because I'd become quite the heifer from wanting to eat here daily. Pics are just after getting home, a quick blast in the air fryer to reheat the meat and cheese and they were right as rain. Is it a legit Philly cheesesteak? Probably as close that you'll get in northern NJ. 4.5/5, would recommend if you don't feel like trekking down the turnpike.

Yelp
Drop everything and go here. Omg is this place unreal. It recently opened and they're out of this world. There's a bunch of cheesesteak options including a build your own. I had the "new school" with added peppers & mushrooms. The Coopers cheese is so good. The fries are delicious and fresh. Service was fantastic and FAST. Rosa the cashier was lovely. Soft drinks available. Good amount of seating inside. Very reasonably priced.

Yelp
Was in the mood for a cheesesteak today, and found this place. Ordered an old school, then a chicken cheesesteak and a Nashville chicken. One word review consistent across all three sandwiches: mid

Deckard S.

Yelp
No frills cheesesteak spot. Be prepared to wait, not a huge operation. Ordered the OG and the new school. Both were good, the new school was dynamite. This place is worth a try for sure, probably the best cheesesteak in the area. Gotta come back to try one of the northshore beefs!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Christo's out for a while based on all the positive reviews and because they share my love for Cooper sharp cheese. I've had my share of cheesesteaks throughout Jersey and in Philly. This is one of the best, if not the best, cheesesteaks I've ever had. The meat is flavorful and they give you more than enough. The cooper sharp and onions give it a nice kick and the seeded roll, while soft, does a great job of holding everything together. I loved everything about this place. My only advice is either call ahead or get there early. We got there around 10 am and business picked up almost immediately after we sat down.
