Yelp
I've been passing by this restaurant during my bike rides over to Leo Ryan Park ever since it opened about two years ago? It's nestled in a little boulevard of restaurants inside Foster's Square Plaza, a nice-community or high-tech apartments, the FC Library, the FC Post Office, the FC Police Dept, the FC Fire Department, and the FC Recreation Center. It's a fabulous location, however I'm noticing a lot of vacancies coming up lately. The Mongolian place just closed, the Indian restaurant has been closed, and the Japanese place closed fairly recently. What's remaining is a Hot Pot place, a Mediterranean place, Erik's Deli Cafe, and Happy Lemon desserts. The rent must be super high here, because I don't think that a lack of traffic would force so many closures. This is as central in Foster City as it gets, so a restaurant would really have to be poor to not have any business. Ok, now onto my experience.
Parking is great, plentiful, and getting here was very convenient thanks to freeways and main streets. The restaurant is nicely decorated, clean, and the lighting was dim, and good for a night time dining experience. Hardwood floors make this restaurant pretty loud. Add to that, a bunch of yelling & crying toddlers and it kind of killed the mood. I get that families like to go out to eat together, but please restrain your children especially around parties that are trying to dine in peace and have a conversation without yelling?
The service is pretty bad. Beware of the short-haired girl with glasses, she's pretty ornery. Our waitress was the youngest person there and she was nice, but rarely checked up on us, if at all. I asked the short-haired girl for one water re-fill and some chopsticks, and she looked at me like I was asking her for a complicated request. In fact, the first time, she walked away from me muttering something under her breath *inaudible.*. There were only about 6-occupied tables with a total of under 20 people in the restaurant, and service was extremely absent & cold.
The food was so-so. We ordered Pad Thai and Pad See Yew, and asked to share the plates, which required additional plates. They acted like we were asking for something that they did not have *rolls eyes." The Pad Thai was overly sweet, the portions were tiny, and barely had any tofu or egg. Instead, they did pile on the cheapest ingredient, raw bean sprouts. Noodles were cooked well, but the sauce was was too sweet and pretty sparse. The Pad See Yew was better, but really, really salty and like the Pad Thai, the best ingredients like broccoli and tofu were really sparse. The noodles were good, but the sauce was way too salty.
I reluctantly asked for more water and some Sriracha sauce to wash down the overly sweet & overly salty noodle dishes, and again, it was like pulling teeth. First, I had to signal a waitress 3x, and when I finally got her attention, she acted like she didn't want to come over. I have to mention that the water glass smelled & tasted fishy too. Not a very good experience here when the food, service, and portions were so lackluster to non-existent. Plus one for the convenience of parking, speed of bringing out the food, and the decor. Minus one for the noise, the service, and the taste of the food.
All in all, it was pretty disappointing. I want to come here. I wanted to like this place. The Yelp ratings seemed very high, but mine is not. Not the worst restaurant that I've ever been too, but certainly among the local choices for asian food, one of the lower ones. I prefer Sweet Thai Basil or Thai Elephant or Thai Satay much more. I probably won't come back here until I hear about the service & food improving, if ever. Too bad, it really looked promising on the outside, inside, and based on past reviews. My experience was pretty disappointing. Even the Trader Joe's frozen versions of these dishes for $5 taste better, plus I don't have to experience the attitude of waitstaff nor eat around a bunch of rowdy children. I'll get to eat in peace with chopsticks, lots of water, and my own bottle of Sriracha.
