8 Best Spas in Chicago for When You Need an Indoor Escape | Condé Nast Traveler

"It's easy to instantly unwind at this urban escape, situated on the fourth floor of the Langham Hotel . Guests receive a warm greeting upon arrival, then are guided to a comfortable waiting area to complete a treatment questionnaire before hitting the locker rooms, where a pool, hot tub, and heated loungers (surrounded by epic skyline views) await. The team here takes a holistic approach to wellness, embracing traditional Chinese medicine philosophies and principles of Wu Xing (encompassing the elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water). Once greeted, guests are asked about their current lifestyle and treatment goals, and services are customized accordingly, incorporating modern comforts and ancient therapeutic practices. There’s an impressive menu of offerings, from facials and herbal salt scrubs to mud wraps, hand and foot therapies, and body massages (and then those that incorporate a few of the aforementioned, such as the Chuan Tao of Detox—a head-to-toe exfoliation followed by a marine algae wrap and acupressure massage)." - Nicole Schnitzler

The best spa in Chicago. Beautiful! New! Very clean! The saunas and steam room are properly hot, just as they should be. Excellent service and attentive staff. I loved the herbal sauna!

Heaven is Chuan Spa! Not my first time here but better each time and massages are so great. Even the waiting area and all the amenities in the lounge from sauna to heated loungers! GO

Just had the ultimate spa day at Chuan Spa inside The Langham, and let me tell you—it’s worth every penny. I went all in with the 24 Karat Opulence Full Day Escape, which ran me about $600. Started with a private yoga session, then hit the herbal sauna and Himalayan salt room before diving into the gold body glow treatment. The 50-minute customized massage was next-level, and the 24K facial had my skin glowing like the Bean on a sunny day. Wrapped it up with lunch and a glass of bubbly by their stunning indoor pool—felt like royalty. If you're looking to treat yourself or celebrate something special, this place is a no-brainer.

I truly love The Langham and always recommend it to friends. For the past three years, I've been making it a tradition to stay in one of your high-category rooms and spend my free time relaxing in your beautiful spa. It’s always been a wonderful experience — until today. Unfortunately, this recent visit was overshadowed by several issues. First, I encountered significant difficulties while trying to book an 80-minute couples massage. We were not informed in advance that after the massage, we would have no time to enjoy the rest of the spa facilities. We didn’t realize this right away, and by the time I quickly showered, we were about 15 minutes late exiting the spa area. When I came out and tried to ask Irina at the front desk what was happening — while my husband was still changing — she was visibly upset and didn’t even respond to my question. Her facial expression made it very clear that we were not welcome. Prior to our visit, communication with Irina had also been very difficult — she would take up to three days to respond to simple questions or didn’t reply at all. Thankfully, another staff member — an American woman — eventually stepped in and helped us complete the booking. Thanks to her, we were able to enjoy what turned out to be a lovely evening at your spa. I still love your hotel and want to continue coming back, but I sincerely hope you take this feedback into consideration. Irina’s attitude and service were not in line with the high standards of The Langham. I believe she either needs additional training or some internal review, as her behavior can really ruin what should be a relaxing and welcoming experience.

I’ve been going to Chuan Spa on and off because it used to be one of my favorite spots. But after my recent visit, I’m seriously reconsidering ever going back. I booked a CBD full-body treatment and a Hydro Facial. As usual, I was given a robe upon arrival—something you trust is clean at a high-end spa. But once I put it on, I noticed a used Kleenex and a hair clip in the pocket. That’s disgusting. I was grossed out the entire time. Even after asking for and showering with a "clean" robe, I couldn’t shake the feeling. It now makes me question how many other times I’ve unknowingly worn a dirty robe here. Very disappointing experience from a place that should be setting the standard. Not sure I’ll be back.

I decided to spend my birthday at this spa, expecting a relaxing and peaceful day. My appointment started at 8 AM, and while my massage was okay, I’ve definitely had better. After the massage, I was looking forward to unwinding in the spa amenities. However, I didn’t realize that the spa pool was connected to the hotel, which meant there were children in the area. Unfortunately, this completely disrupted the relaxing atmosphere I was hoping for. I had planned to enjoy the pool and sauna, but with the noise and lack of a serene environment, my day was cut short. Had I known this beforehand, I would have chosen to spend my $300+ elsewhere. It was a disappointing experience, especially since I had high hopes for celebrating my birthday. Sadly, I won’t be returning.

I was given a gift card for the spa and made an appointment for the foot retreat. They ask you to come thirty minutes early for paperwork, which is very quick. I was given a tour of the facility, shown to the locker room and given a robe. You can take advantage of the wet sauna, two dry saunas and relaxation lounge with heated loungers while you wait. Very relaxing atmosphere. My treatment was done by Christine and she was wonderful. The room is a little bigger than I am used to which was nice. After treatment you can use the pool and hot tub, though I didn't. It is an expensive spa so not something I would do regularly but as a treat it was perfect.

Google
I’m incredibly disappointed with the way Chuan Spa at The Langham, Chicago handles billing. Let me start by saying the services themselves were wonderful—my body scrub, facial, and foot treatment were all top-notch, and I have no complaints about the esthetician or massage staff. They were excellent. The problem began *after* our visit. My boyfriend and I came to the spa in **April** and paid **in full** at the time of service. Everything was settled that day. Then, **a month later in May**, we were hit with a completely random charge of nearly **$2,000** for services we did **not** receive. To make it worse, the spa emailed the invoices directly to *me*, even though my boyfriend made the reservation and handled the payment. It was extremely tacky—he had gone out of his way to keep the cost of the day a surprise, and they completely disregarded that. Even on the day of our visit, the front desk seemed disorganized. The woman helping us clearly didn’t understand the system. She initially authorized my boyfriend’s card, but when we added services, she somehow deleted the original authorization (which still lingered as a pending charge) and had to process the full payment *again*. They apologized in the moment, but we assumed the issue was resolved. For this spa to come back **a month later** and charge us again—without explanation or justification—is completely unacceptable. This is not what you expect from a luxury spa experience. The service providers may be excellent, but the management and billing team are clearly not equipped to handle high-end clientele. **Proceed with extreme caution.**

Yelp
Had a really nice experience here. Far as the spa services are concerned did a 80 minute massage. This is definitely a place where you're coming to treat yourself to something luxurious is out of the ordinary. We definitely plan to get lost here for the day and do a little staycation, but not with the accommodations. Enjoying the spa amenities for the day. Now to what I did not enjoy, I did not enjoy the spa having to share, it's pool with the hotel. This is a high price point hotel/ spa experience. I did not appreciate the numerous amount of families that included small children were. The parents absolutely did not discipline, nor attend to their children and their entitled behavior of taking over the entire pool area and even the jacuzzi. I did talk to management whom apologized . But it was very disheartening! This place is too expensive to not have quiet and enjoyable experience from start to finish. I received 20 percent off for my trouble. Also the gratuity is added which is more than 20 percent. But you can ask to customize your own amount. Suggest going during the week for a quite experience!

Yelp
Since writing my review, I was contacted by the manager of the spa deeply apologizing for my experience. They invited me back and more than made up for my original experience. They also have committed to improving communications w/ the staff, especially when changes need to be made to your reservation. This will remain one of my go-to spas when I want to treat myself and others to a heavenly experience. Also, the pool and hot tub area is a must visit when staying at the Langham! Thank you Lizzette for your care and turning the situation around!

Yelp
I booked the 50-minute customized massage. I was greeted and guided to a private room with two massage beds. The therapist asked me to get comfortable & inquired about my preferences for the massage. She returned a few minutes later to begin the session. The actual massage started about 10 minutes after the scheduled time due to a tour of the facility & changing time, and it ended approximately 10 minutes early--so the massage itself lasted around 30 minutes. Considering the service duration and the $296 price (including a preset tip), I'm unsure if it was truly worth the cost.

Yelp
Arrived at 7:20 in the morning for my 8am harmony massage on my birthday. After checking in, one of the friendly staff showed me around and made clear introductions of the facilities since it was my first visit. I really liked how quiet the entire floor was and I got to swim in the beautiful pool and used the nice saunas by myself before the message! I went to the waiting area 5 mins before my appointment. The therapist team came out from the back at the same time to get the guests at 8:02am. My therapist was great - talked softly but clearly about the service, focused on the massage and never tried to chat more. The massage was on point and really relaxed me completely. The massage part ended at 9:02am and I went for some free snacks and drinks before spending some more time in the saunas. Overall, the facilities are great and I highly recommend to come early to enjoy the facilities and incorporate them into the massage or facial service to make it a full experience.

Yelp
Excellent spa services and amenities located on the 4th floor of the Langham hotel. Steam, dry and herbal rooms as well as a great place to chill and relax. Full spa services as well and a beautiful pool and gym.

Yelp
My 80 minute prenatal massage with face mask and foot scrub is my favorite pampering experience I've ever had. The treatment was heavenly and relaxing, the lounge is lovely withe delightful treats and teas, and the women's area had suuuuper comfy zero gravity loungers and lovely saunas (I went into the aromatherapy sauna for a few refreshing deep breaths). I could have stayed all day.

Yelp
Usually my visits to the spa are unbelievably great. But now the Covid is over they have a lot of new staff members and the normal masseuse that were there before are not so the quality of my massage was terrible. The lady I had didn't seem like she knew what she was doing at all. It was absolutely one of the worst massages I ever had. She didn't ask me were there any specific areas that I needed worked on more than others she literally gave me a head massage for five seconds and never even massage my feet. I did get a custom deep tissue but it was nothing custom about it. I did let the hostess know and she did take off the service charge. But I felt she should have compensated me for another massage at a later date of my choice but she did not. I was extremely disappointed with the entire experience.

Yelp
My masseuse was point on with the pressure. The massage room was soothing and comfortable. The steam room was a bit small, but overall an impressive facility.

Yelp
I visited this spa once quite a long time ago - and just recently returned. The spa is lovely, with plenty of spaces to relax...sauna, hot tub, relaxation room, etc etc. I chose to swim and spend my time in the hot tub before my massage. Very relaxing and thankfully not busy. The pool is lovely - not huge but it's got a nice view and I love the lights on the ceiling. Very enjoyable. So, I relaxed for a while, took a shower and then went to await my massage. My massage therapist was amazing! This is one of the best massages I've ever gotten. I also lucked out with the VIP treatment room. I didn't use anything else in it but I sure felt like a VIP! After my wonderful massage, I had a glass of Prosecco and decided to order lunch... burger and some chocolate cake - yes please! They said it would take about 30 min, so I did some laps in the pool and read for a while. Lunch was right on time and set up by the windows along the pool. Delicious food and a lazy, relaxing atmosphere was just what I was looking for. Then I was running out of time for my later event so I raced to the showers. If I have one complaint it is the footwear...the slippers they provide are somewhat hard plastic and they hurt me by the end of the visit. They could improve on the slippers! However, the showers were nice, well stocked and they have a rain shower/hand held shower head combo. It is an expensive indulgent treat, but well worth it for a special occasion in my opinion. I will definitely be back...but with my own footwear.

Yelp
TL;DR *The facilities are awesome, the staff is very helpful, the massage was good too. Will be back and plan to bring my husband along as well! Facilites *Pros: public areas are well appointed and expansive for a city hotel. Massive gym with peloton bikes. Large jacuzzi. Large lap pool. Dramatic water features in the communal spa waiting area provided soothing white noise. Light snacks and flavored water were a nice touch (there were yogurt pretzels and bananas chips with watermelon water when I was there). Women's locker room had great bones: separate dry sauna, wet steam rooms, rainfall showers, heated lounge chairs. I didn't get to use as I'm pregnant but I really enjoy the different types of heat humidity combinations. *Cons: First is that the only hot drink available was caffeinated tea. Its freezing out. I wish they would have had a decaf option as I'm pregnant and avoiding caffeine.. being Asian inspired I was surprised they only had one tea option. This is a really easy fix. Second issue in my mind is also an easy fix. They don't have many toiletries in the women's locker room. No deodorant, hair spray, combs, hair ties, or really any extras. I did ask for a razor and one the nice attendants got me one. Also their skincare products are really lacking. The showers have body soap and shampoo/ conditioner and there is body lotion and mouthwash on the sink counter but no facial soap or face lotion.. something even gyms like Equinox supply. It's a must in the dry air of Chicago winters. Massage *Pros: I had the prenatal 80 min massage. Good pressure and varied bed positions to accommodate a big baby belly. *Cons: Timing was a bit truncated, but the front desk was very professional and provided a small discount so no real complaints. (Backstory is that they walked me back right at 5:45p, but spent several minutes discussing the benefits of a $45 Chinese medicine add-on.. that I didn't want.. at the end of the massage I didn't see a clock right away but 1) I got dressed, 2)waited for the massage therapist to bring a water, and then 3) walked back to the women's lockers and it was just 7:05pm when I was getting back to the lockers.

Yelp
After a stressful December, coming here a few days ago was just what I needed to relax. I made an appointment about 4 days before the date I wanted for an 11am appointment. My appointment was for a Friday, so it might be wise to book further ahead for a Saturday/Sunday. Many of the services sounded appealing, but I knew I desperately needed a facial. The phone booking process was smooth and pleasant, but I hope they create an online booking option in the future. I arrived about an hour and a half before my appointment time. I was initially nervous that I wouldn't have enough time to enjoy the spa facilities before my service, but it was actually the perfect amount of time. I spent most of my time in the hot tub and pool area. This area is very beautiful. I was actually the only person in this area for the whole 50-60 minutes I was there. One of the attendants brought me snacks and water while I was there. I also spent time in the sauna areas before my facial. I loved the herbal sauna the most. Shortly before my facial appointment, I noticed that more people were starting to come into the locker room. I was really thankful I came as early as I did and I would do this again in the future. If you are able to swing it, I would recommend doing the same if you don't want to be around a lot of people. My facial was amazing! I originally booked their more basic facial, but ended up upgrading to a different one when I was in the room with the esthetician. She wasn't pushy at all, but had given me details about another one they offered that may be better to address my skin concerns. The facial ended with a glass of champagne and I spent time in one of the heated loungers. My final thoughts: - Every Langham staff member I encountered in both the spa and other areas were super attentive. I felt very special. - I initially cringed at the thought of spending so much for a facial, but I would still come back here again (probably more so for a special occasion though).

Yelp
10/10. I usually see Rica for my massages and she is incredible and warm and kind. The atmosphere is extremely relaxing and I love that post massage, I can sit in the steam room and sauna and shower before heading out.

Gitika V.

Yelp
The facilities were all pretty nice! A couple things made this a less than ideal experience. For one--the pool area isn't exclusive to the spa. Which is totally fine, just not what I expected. The massage itself that I received was just ok. I noticed that even though I paid for an 80 minute massage, it was closer to 60 minutes because my therapist was late getting me, spent a good amount of time talking before the appointment, and ended the service early. After my massage, I was hungry and asked the front desk for a menu. They said they would send someone to get my order. I waited a good 45 minutes, maybe more, but no one came. I ended up going home. All in all--for a spa that's ranked top 10 in chicago and cost me $450 after add ons, service charges, etc. I just don't think the service was up to par. The facilities and and cleanliness were redeeming, which is why I leave 3 stars.
google avatar

Eliza E.

Yelp
Nice but underwhelming. The facilities are lovely and staff were really nice. My massage therapist was great and the massage was just what I wanted. However, the spa just doesn't feel relaxing. There were too many people there given the size of the space, it was loud, and just felt chaotic. I did not even try the pool area because of the volume. Given Covid, I did not feel comfortable sitting in a tiny sauna with several other people. So, after my massage I just went up to my room. Definitely not worth the cost to not be able to enjoy the facilities.

Yelp
I usually do not trust yelp reviews as I feel like people only come to complain but I wish I would've taken the advice of others here and chosen differently :( Maybe coming to places like this are every day occurrences for some, but for my mom's 70th birthday (and first massage since the pandemic started), my fam wanted to gift her an extraordinary experience. We foolishly equated "expensive" with "extraordinary" and were left with a big bill (where they auto tack on OVER industry standard of 20%...I think it was 27% which makes me feel like the customers pay the therapists salary and that it isn't actually a tip), and an ok couple of hours. It feels lame to complain about mediocre spa services, but I just feel like people should prepare themselves. Here is a recount of her experience: she said her therapist told her right off the bat she was going to door county (where my mom lives), and proceed to ask her about where to go, where to eat etc during the service. My mom had to ask her for quiet time and to stop talking. The therapist also told her most people choose to add at least 2 upgrades to their services. The upsell was definitely not appropriate here as these services were pre booked and paid for in advance. This was a gift and I had carefully selected the services we wanted her to experience. Instead of relaxed, she immediately felt pressured: "most people choose 2 upgrades" so picked hot stones...but like...this feels so tacky. Especially when again, this was a gift. I also repeatedly asked that her massage be 90 minutes (the 5 element massage is 60). I was told this was possible when I booked over the phone, and that they would just book a separate service to add the extra 30 minutes of massage. I saw on my reservation that a 30 minute head neck and shoulder massage was booked and trusted that this would result in a 90 minute full body massage, as promised. When I dropped her off, I again specifically asked the front desk "and the extra 30 minutes will be incorporated into her service?" And was told yes. This did not happen. She had to get into a robe and change and move rooms to go to a different therapist for a separate massage that indeed was just head, back and shoulders. She's recovering from a broken wrist and hurt foot...I was hoping this the extra time would be to focus on those areas or other areas of concern. I did not book a head and shoulder massage separate...I wanted a 90 minute full body massage. So not sure what happened there as I made sure and was reassured we were all on the same page. Really wish I would've been told a 90 minute massage was not possible as I would've made different choices. My mom did say it was a bit jarring to have to move to another massage for areas of her body that didn't really need more focus, but was also ok with the change because of the first therapist's talking and massage by numbers from...she didn't feel the first therapist addressed any areas of concern or had an intuitive touch. It felt as if she gave the same exact standard massage to every body, regardless of their needs. My mom did say the second massage therapist was very good...she didn't want (and I didn't book) a separate head massage and she didn't want to mess her hair, so he didn't use oil on her head and she said that part hurt and it felt like her hair was getting ripped out, but... The bamboo "wood" element wasn't used during her 5 element experience and the therapist told her it was part of it (maybe because she picked a hot stone add on that eliminated the bamboo?). The "metal" was chimes that she clinked really loud and right in her ear, the having to ask to stop talking, not "reading the room", the standard massage, the having to change for a separate head neck and shoulder massage that no one wanted or booked...I don't know. It didn't feel like luxury and it didn't feel like the Langham. And I politely wrote an email stating all this...and no one has yet to respond a few months later. So add subpar customer service to the list. I'm sorry Langham! I love your high tea, love the rooms, love your establishment...but the spa was not up to your normal standards. Two stars are for the amenities because they are on point!

Yelp
I'm not sure what qualifies the Chuan Spa as one of the best hotel spa's in America, because in mind it wouldn't make a best local spa. I received two very generous gift certificates for this spa (am I stressed? maybe) so had two chances to review it. The first time I took my sister and I for some holiday massages and scrubs. The scrub was nice if not a little soft, and I heard the massage was fine as well . The second time I got the scrub - again good but wish they would've scrubbed more dead skin off, I felt like it didn't do a ton. Where we knock points off? WTF is their amenity situation?? A steam room that holds maybe 3 people and doesn't get that hot. A "relaxation" green tea room, a sauna that holds 2 and some warm chairs? The first time I went the sauna was basically broken and the green tea room was also under maintainence. Overall it's so not worth the money and the spa isn't luxurious. Do not waste your time and money here.

Yelp
A friend brought me here as a very belated birthday gift. We pulled up and asked if we could valet the car. Yes! Plus it was a deal. Only $14 with a stamp from the spa. That was the first and last deal of the day. The spa is on the fourth floor of the Langham Hotel. The spa is beautiful and the appointments elegant. We signed in and were given a short tour and escorted to the ladies locker room. Then we had a tour of the locker room. I think that I loved the locker room the best. They had great showers, a dry sauna, a scented sauna, a steam sauna and heated lounge chairs. The locker room attendant was attentive but not intrusive. We each had the harmony massage. I would not recommend it. The massage was 90 min and did almost nothing for me. It was too light and I came out feeling pretty much the same as I went in. The best part was that she gave me some eucalyptus to open up my sinuses. She said she would leave some a t the front for me to take with me but I didn't get any. It was worse for my friend. She came out of the massage with a large pain in her hip that wasn't there before they started. Thankfully, she was able to get rid of it in the hot tub later. We did enjoy the different flavored waters available. The cranberry was our favorite. They also some dried fruit and nuts. The pool and hot tub were really nice. Do bring a swimsuit for the pool. We were even able to order our lunch to the pool. That was fun. It did take 45 minutes though. That seems too long for two sandwiches. Plus the price tag on the sandwiches was really high. With tax and tip over $60! The sandwiches were quite tasty. I had the lamb burger and my friend had the BLT. The pool water temperature was perfect. Though the locker room and pool area were really lovely, the price was excessive! I mean really excessive! For an only "okay" massage this is unacceptable. My friend neglected to check the prices before booking and was she sorry. Don't think either of us will be back.

Yelp
Located inside the Langham Hotel. So tranquil and relaxing for a mini-trip to the mid-west. Definitely go early and take advantage of the saunas, aromatherapy showers and the ergonomic recliners, so relaxing for the muscles. Really puts you at ease before your treatment. The staff are super professional and truly provide world class service. My luxury HydraFacial was AMAZING: -red light therapy -extractions through a vacuum like process called Vortex-fusion, which also infuses peptide rich serums into the skin -exfoliating peel mask -Hand, neck and shoulder massage put me right to sleep -comes with a full size hydropeptide eye serum, $82 retail Rare to find a results driven facial in a beautiful luxurious setting, usually it's a med-spa. Extras: -Italian marble and running water throughout the facility -nuts, fruit and chamomile tea My skin has never felt so clean and bright!!! Fantastic. I will be looking up this facial in the Bay Area and purchase a series. In Chicago only the Langham and the Park Hyatt currently provide this treatment. The therapist for the massage also provided the relaxation the bf craved. Final check out, the gentleman in the suit just hovers around and makes it super uncomfortable. Really unnecessary. Not a good way to end. Still, 5 stars.

Yelp
I came to the Chuan because it was recommended on Forbes as a top spa . I usually go to a beautiful place in Pilsen called verde holistic but wanted a steam room. The place is nice but the massage was HORRIBLE . I have never in my life had my body be slapped and tugged a pulled . I winced in pain the whole time and told the masseuse to lighten up . She is not skilled and I can tell because I get massages OFTEN. Also some guests made inappropriate comments about guests of a different demographic which made me uncomfortable . I immediately reported my experience to the woman at the front desk .

Yelp
Had to say I was so looking forward to the spa services here and high expectation but was disappointed the spa it's self. Also wasn't impressed with the front of the house, the staff was very rude. My masseuse was super loud to begin with...lady I am here to relax. Then she runs out of oil in the middle of my massage and had to go out of the room to get more and on her way in out of my room she was banging the doors so loud that it would wake anyone up from a deep sleep. I was super annoyed by this. You are a top rated Spa where is your Spa etiquette? Our nail technician had a cold and was constantly blowing her nose during the session and then making hand contact with us. She said it was allergies, but the way she was coughing and sniffling. It was definitely a cold...which I now have, thank you. With the level of intimacy of a spa, employees should be encouraged to achieve their own wellness before contaminating guests, right? The website boasts access to the jacuzzi, but it had been out of order and they had no idea when it would be available to guests. Why would fixing a luxury item like a jacuzzi not be a priority for a property like the Langham? Since I was charged for high peak, I was hopeful that they would do a much better with maintenance Finally, the bill had an automatic gratuity added, but I just wondered for whom? I'm shocked by the absence of attention to detail and lack of pursuit of excellence from this property. I cannot recommend this place for the amount we paid. I was turned off by how rude and unprofessional the woman upfront and the how poorly the management handled everything.

Yelp
Well this was a disappointment. This is supposed to be one of the best spas in Chicago? Really? Well Chicago must have shitty spas. The locker room was nice. That's where the niceness ended. The relaxation room/waiting area was way too bright, very loud and not relaxing at all. The room where I received my treatment was next to a window wall where I could hear every singly siren and car horn honking while I was trying to relax on the table. The therapist gave me the wrong treatment (not what I booked). The cashier charged me incorrectly for the treatment not once not twice but three times, which required several calls to several managers. Save your money for a truly great spa elsewhere (apparently not in Chicago).

Yelp
I am updating the review because we were eventually completely refunded for this experience. I would give 5 stars if this was done from the get-go. I would give this spa another chance but would bring my own headphones and ask very specific questions about noise level in the rooms we were booking.

Yelp
One of the best spa experiences I've had in Chicago! Booked a 50 minute massage for my husband and I to unwind from the holiday madness and it was worth it. We arrived a full hour early to experience the bathing ritual. In each beautiful and spacious locker room there were 5 private showers, a Himalayan Salt Dry Sauna, a very hot wet sauna infused with an ingredient to open pores, an herbal spa and relaxation room with heated chairs. ( I was suspicious of the chairs but once I lay down, I didn't want to get back up) We then went to the coed lounge to await our massage and were then taken back to separate rooms (this was not intended but our massage reduced almost half price for this inconvenience which we appreciated). I received a traditional Swedish massage and it was very good. We then made our way to the gorgeous pool and jacuzzi. Finally, it was time to shower up and head out. I appreciated that the spa locker room had amenities like combs, dental kits etc, hot water and tea in addition to the traditional items. Overall, the experience was worth the price because we took advantage of the full spa experience. If you're looking for a fast good massage, I would recommend other smaller spa/salons. One other thing that was unexpected was that the gratuity was automatically added at about 23%. I found this a little annoying as I'm accustomed to leaving a 20% tip for a good service and more for a great service. Yet I prefer to reserve the right to use my discretion based on the quality of the service provided. So overall it was fantastic and I highly recommend it for a full day spa experience.

Yelp
This spa is LUXURY. My cup of tea! Service was impeccable, lounge area so damn relaxing! Was in town visiting family and booked a last minute treatment. So worth it! Cost me about $280 plus gratuity but omg! Gorgeous layout and very high end amenities. Only downfall was I still had to pay $14 for valet even after spending close to $400 (includes tip). This should have been covered.

Yelp
Pros: everything! This place is amazing The spa is spacious and has amazing amenities. Make sure you have time to enjoy the steam room, Himalayan salt room and beautiful pool. Even the heated lounges in the locker room are amazing! The treatment rooms are beautiful and staff are exceptional! Cons: I can't afford to come here everyday!

Yelp
Always a relaxing time at the Chuan. The spa lounge is calming and I always enjoy working out in the gym prior to my appointments. I don't recommend anyone in particular, everyone I've had has done a fine job.

Yelp
It just isn't worth the price. The locker room and steam rooms were outstanding, but that's about it. Staff, and masseuse were very kind and accommodating, but the massage itself was one of the worst massages I've ever had. $250 to have someone lightly put their hands around my body and tug on my fingers + toes, instead of focusing on the tense areas where I could use relief that I explicitly mentioned during my intake. Way, way overpriced.

Yelp
I am so torn on this review... The facilities are 5 star. You get access to the workout room, great locker room with showers, steam room, saunas, heated loungers, etc. the swimming pool and hot tub...although when we were there, the hot tub was being worked on so no go for us. But, for the most part, the facilities are clean, crisp, and plentiful...and included in your spa service. The spa desk was right next to a huge luncheon...which took away from the ambiance. I didn't like walking out of the locker room in my robe to business people chatting it up while I walked down the hall to the spa lounge...that was weird. Not a fan. We did the Chuan Rituals. The massage was good. I wish there would have been more explanation of my 'symbol' and the acupressure points, etc. They were just like, you are wood. I'm like...what's wood??? Still no clue. I like the idea of Chinese rituals but isn't the point to understand what it is?? The facial was awful...like one of the worst I have had. She barely did anything to my face and was massaging my feet and hands for over half of it...which is nice, but I would've loved a facial massage! Then she squeezed and squeezed some very deep acne that I had...when most estheticians would never have done that. I have had about a million facials and this was pretty disheartening. My friend said the woman was just pushing products the entire time. My girl didn't do that. The rooms were very nice and the ambiance was great. Music was the perfect level. The dream room was super cool. It's loungers that light, vibrate, play music and you can look up at the starry sky. Pure relaxation. When we checked out, the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing...they tried to charge us separately even though I booked the Rituals. They had to re-run it, which again...isn't the end of the world, it's just at a spa of this caliber, you expect them to have it figured out. Oh and don't worry, they had about 5 products sitting at the counter for my friend, HA! Overall, I definitely think for what we paid for a high end spa, downtown Chicago...the Chuan Rituals is worth it IF you are the type of person that loves all the bells and whistles at a spa. I personally love steam rooms, saunas, etc. We were there at 9a and left at 2p. The massage was good, facial was bad BUT if you just get a massage...it's pretty pricey SO if you do Chuan Rituals, it's kind of worth it. I just wished the facial would've been better, no luncheon right by the spa, hot tub in working condition, and the check out staff knew what they were doing.

Yelp
Yes!!!! Go here!!!!!! I loved the questionnaire at the beginning to determine your element. They were dead on with my scent. The facilities are fantastic. This is the spa that you want to hang out in all day to relax. There are multiple areas to choose from. There are three hot rooms to choose from. There is a relaxation lounge. There is an area with hot stone loungers. There is the dream room. You have everything you need to take a shower. The locker room is bright with marble. It is clean and well kept. It is quiet!!! The staff is not obtrusive and very professional. They all had smiles on their faces. There was water, tea, apples and light snacks available. Their robes had pockets and they use a key code. You have to hold a card to get into the locker room but no biggie. My massage and scalp treatment was heaven. She added some cranio-sacral which I appreciate. My facial was absolute heaven with another race, arm and hand massage. This place would be a ten star if they had their own spa pool but instead you have to share with the hotel and kids....eek. That's OK. There are enough other areas to hang that this is not a deal breaker. I will go back for sure and I will make sure to come early and leave later.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite, go-to, most elegant with the best amenities spa in Chicago. I was staying at the hotel and I decided to treat myself to the 90 minute Harmony Massage. When I walked in I had to take a short quiz to find out what my element was in order to get in touch with my element during my massage. They strictly perform the harmony massage based on your element which I found very unique. The powder room/ locker room was so white, clean and modern. The locker room has 3 different saunas, and a quiet area with these heated marble seats to completely relax you. I relaxed in there for about 30 minutes prior to my massage. The massage was one like I've never experienced before. I was in full tranquility, the energy of the room was so peaceful. The entire spa has a very calm vibration. Everyone was so pleasant and extremely respectful. I cannot wait to come back and treat myself to more services.

Yelp
This was a incredibly terrible experience. I called a month prior to make a reservation to celebrate my mom and aunt's 60th birthday. I purchased a 50 minute massage for the two of them and my cousin's and I purchased a day pass on groupon. The groupon was $51 and allowed access to the facility for 3 hours. I wanted to make sure I knew the cost of all the services we were purchasing because this was very expensive ($200 for each massage). I spent a half hour speaking to the receptionist on the phone. I went ahead and purchased the groupon online and called back with the confirmation code. Only then did the inform me of the 23% gratuity fee which was calculated from the original $160 day pass and not the discounted price. So it was $51 for the day pass and $37 for "gratuity" on each day pass. This was very disappointing even before we attended the spa. The actual experience was also awful. The day was disappointing. The spa included small saunas and "hot chairs" and access to the pool and hot tub. Our time at the pool that was supposed to be relaxing was ruined by at least 15 children running around being incredibly loud. The stay was also supposed to include a glass of Prosecco which was only brought to us after an hour and a half of waiting and requesting the front desk to bring it to our group which took another half hour. The pool tables had food on them from groups prior. I'm not quite sure what the $37 gratuity was for but this was terrible service. Never coming back. Such a rip off.

Yelp
Detox with Viola was amazing... she also seems to be the best massage therapist I have found. Fully relaxed all day long and treatment was at 9am. Highly recomended!

Yelp
Got even worse. I was charged for $250 though my service was $100. Called n inquired. She told me she would get back to me within hour. Called back after 1.5hrs and she's like I am refunding u whole thing. Well. Jezzz...I can afford the service so don't make it sound like refunding me whole thing is doing me a favor when u overcharged me 2x plus to begin with. At least try explain to me how it happened. It almost made me feel like I have to thank u for refunding me....just really bad service and attitude from different members. By the way I found a fly in my food and told the waitress. Instead she said well it's actually just a fruit fly it happens but I will exchange for u. Uh does it matter which insect is in my food? Point is there is insect in my food. Again. All around horrible standards for staff. None feels apologetic

Yelp
Came here for a Christmas gift massage and thought it was really top notch! Be warned that many amenities are gender-split such that you won't be spending time with your bf/gf if you're different genders when you do the steam room, sauna, lounge, aromatherapy shower (which I'm not sure I ever found btw). The pool and hot tub are in a beautiful room with sparkling lights overhead. The massages are based on elements and include a tiny bit of light chanting (new experience for me). I really liked it and would love to come back on a serious splurge. Sound carries in the locker rooms though so please don't be those annoying people talking incessantly about your lives and keeping others from relaxing in quiet! Drove me nutssss

Yelp
Where should I even start.... I came here last minute with my friend for our birthdays - it was my 30th. Front office was extremely pleasant once we arrived, and got us ready for our massage & facial. It went down spiral from the moment the lady doing my facial arrived and lectured me I was 5 mm late (on my phone 3mn, I was too comfortable on the warm chairs). I paid for 80 mn facial. And I can attest for at least 15mn I only had the steam blown to my face. No massage. 15 mn - of only steam. The massage was good but it was too quick! 5mn? In between treatments I counted 8mn... For a 5 start SPA (the best in the Midwest) was the biggest disappointment. The products they used smelled old, and lo and behold, I had acne 2 days later! I haven't got acne since I was a teenager!! The warm chairs are not super comfortable were not cleaned and just not very hygienic. In the middle of the chairs there was a basket with orange peel before and after the treatment - no one comes for small maintenance? Since I was charged for high peak, I was hopeful that they would do a much better with maintenance. I was told management would call, I guess they didn't bother. Right now I want to forget the dreadful experience and will not be returning in any circumstance.

Yelp
Had a great experience during Memorial Day weekend. Check in was fast and the staff was helpful in explaining all the amenities that the spa facility has to offer--which, in the women's area, are: two saunas, a steam room, a relaxation lounge with heated stone beds, four private showers, two open showers for rinsing in-between saunas/steams, a very large and spacious locker area and four makeup stations. The saunas and steam room are very small, and the steam room isn't a eucalyptus one, but the temperature was great and it was clean. One caveat is that, when I say small, I mean two people can fit comfortably and three would be tight. The facilities were kept clean and the staff were friendly and proactive. The waiting area for the service was dark and tranquil. I love the wall waterfall. Snacks and three different flavored waters were offered. As for the service, I got a citrus ginger scrub with Andrea and she was very kind and skilled. The scrub took place in a large spa room with two beds, a seating area, a large tub, and private shower and restroom. The spa room was huge! I paid extra for a massage application instead of just moisturizing oil and it was worth it! The shower in the private room had the best pressurized rain shower head! This spa is NOT cheap (be aware when you check out, a roughly 24% service charge gets automatically added). But for the price, you're really paying for use of the facilities also, which you can use before and after the service. I will definitely come back the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
This spa, spacious as it is, is missing my favorite elements of a spa, which is a cold/tepid/hot pool cicuit. However, they do offer heated stone loungers with a beautiful view of the city, and the decor lends itself to tranquility and relaxation. We enjoyed a couples massage in a special room (I don't remember what it is called) that had a bathtub that did vibration, light, and music, and we were able to spend an hour AFTER our services in this room. My wife took qhat she described as the most relaxing nap of her life. You can also enjoy a steam shower in the room along with that incredible bathtub!! You don't want to leave. I would have deducted one star for a blip in service- we were told that 10 minutes prior to the end of our time in the tub room we would hear a soft knock alerting us that we had (10 minutes) to finish up. However, after relaxing in peaceful bliss (for apparently an hour), there was a loud pounding on the door followed by a harsh voice demanding we exit as our time was up. This was not what we had been told would happen upon our arrival, and was a rude interruption in an otherwise relaxing experience. HOWEVER, when asked about out experience upon checkout, we advised the attendant what had happened, and received a genuine apology as well as a significant reduction in our final bill. The attendant didn't bother with a long fake apology not did she need to fetch a manager, she just took care of us with a smile and expressed her desire for our return. That is more impressive than all the spa amenities in the world.

Yelp
The most luxurious experience in my spa repertoire. The entire 4th floor is dedicated to wellness. When you step off the elevator, you are enfolded in a nurturing and welcoming vibe. The arrival sitting area has herbal teas and lovely mint water. The staff were super welcoming. After our 4th day, we wish we asked for an orientation as we had some uncertainty about the treatment rooms and learned at the end, fruit juice shots were complimentary. The ladies locker room is immaculate and well stocked with high quality apothecaries and items such as strong shower caps. We loved the Himalayan salt spa. The steam room was wonderful. Our favorite treatment spa was the herbal room. The cedar benches and the lovely aroma of rosemary was so relaxing. There were 4 heated relaxing beds for meditation and solitude. Off to the fitness room. This is a legit gym with machines, smith press, 4 Peloton bikes and tons of cardio equipment. The free weight area is massive. We did not indulge in massage or personal treatments but women we met loved the indulgence.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful & relaxing spa are- the bathrooms have steam / sauna rooms for before & after spa services as well as heated lounge chairs looking out over the city Very expensive but worth it!

Esteban M.

Yelp
Although facilities are great, you don't really get to enjoy them. At least not together. We got a couples massage package which includes 3hs of access to the pool/jacuzzi/saunas. Massage was fantastic but we ended up spending some time separate in the saunas (which are in the bathrooms along with the heated chairs, so no couples time there) and the rest in the waiting room because the pool was full of children jumping in and out, they all even had inflatables (which I've even seen 2 star hotels not allowing this). It was so laid we couldn't hear each other across the table by the pool. At reception we were given a face mask for the inconvenience, nice gesture but I paid $600 (including the 23% gratuity) because they had the facilities which others didn't. Next time I will save my money and just get a massage somewhere else.

Yelp
Amazing staff and therapists. The warm stone beds, steam and saunas make for a great addition to the treatments they offer. Favorite spa in the city!

Yelp
I've been before and remembered being very impressed so I booked a few treatments. The therapists are very professional, calming, and informative, perhaps the best I've experienced in Chicago. Can't stress enough how good the Facial and Massage were. The amenities are good but could be better. Not enough snacks, one of the saunas was not hot at all. The pool area while big does not have enough places to lounge. The main issue I had was the reception. It was crowded, but they did not seem prepared for the amount of people. There were long wait times, and the manger was, I hate to say it, a bit rude. For someone local paying $1000 for treatments, I just felt they did not make the experience special. Unfortunately my next treatment will be elsewhere.

Yelp
This is hands down the best spa in Chicago. The Peninsula gets all the hype, and maybe years ago it was all that, but Chuan represents the modern spa experience, with top of the line facilities, creative massages, and the sort of environment where you could come and spend all day. In fact, I've occasionally paid for a day pass here and just hung out with my laptop for a work from "home" day. You can't do that too often, because even day passes aren't cheap, but it makes for a nice monthly indulgence. Speaking of indulgence, the entire ritual screams luxury. I like to come in, do the bathing ritual, with the wide variety of steam rooms, aromatherapy showers, etc. Then I will take a couple of business calls, then get my massage. I'm a huge fan of the five elements massage. It's pampering, but I still feel manly. That sort of thing is important when you like to regularly go to the spa. The massage comes with spa access (and for $400, it had better!) but I only do the massage every 2-3 months. The a la carte facilities are a more regular thing for me. When the massage is over, I will alternate between more business calls, gym time, a few pool laps, lunch, a nap, a few more business calls, couple more laps, shower, and I call it a day. I've occasionally flirted with membership, but I can't justify $10,000 a year. I would do it for half that, though. And be very happy about it. Pro tip - watch for Gilt offers that pop up every so often. I've been to all the major Chicago spas. This place is on another level entirely. You pay for it, but it is worth it.

Yelp
Beyond amazing. The facilities were top notch. They were clean, 2 saunas, 1 steam room, heated lounge chairs. Bring your swim suit! There's a pool hot tub. Normally I don't entertain these amenities but it was worth it. The water was delicious as well. Make sure you have extra time for this. The massage was to my liking. salt rub was excellent. The rain shower was worth ruining my blowout.

Yelp
I don't usually write reviews, but I felt compelled to save future customers from wasting their money. I went last week to celebrate my birthday and booked a massage and a pedicure. The facilities were nice, the staff was friendly and the massage was pretty good. Things fell apart when I went for the pedicure. For the money they charge, I was expecting a true spa pedicure as I have had at other places like the Peninsula or the Waldorf. First off, I was not expecting a dry pedicure. I went along with it as I was open to trying something new. However, I regret not stopping the technician before she got started. I literally could have done the pedicure myself at home. The description of the pedicure does not match the service that was provided. I still had a fair amount of dry calloused skin at the end and my nail polish only lasted four days. Please believe the previous negative reviews about being encouraged to pay for "add on" services. During my massage, I was asked if I wanted to add on special oils and during the pedicure I was asked if I wanted to add on a facial for an extra charge. When I checked out at the front desk after my services, several "recommended" products were waiting for me to purchase. Sadly, I won't be coming back here for spa services again.

Yelp
I recently organized a spa day here for me and three girlfriends and I have nothing but good things to say about Chuan Spa. It's worth disclosing that this place is MUCH more expensive than a lot of the other spas in the area, but in my experience it is worth it. The facilities are great and the bathing ritual is really, really relaxing. It's definitely worth arriving here early for. I also really enjoyed the massage itself. The pressure was perfect and the woman did a great job addressing the problem areas I pointed out. I also like that most of the time in the massage was hands on (vs. other places where a lot of time seems to be spent grabbing bottles and organizing other supplies). The locker room to shower and great ready is also great. My one tip would be to try to go early or to find out which days are less crowded if you want to take advantage of the bathing ritual as I found there was a bit of a wait for the aromatherapy showers (which are awesome), though it was not a problem with the saunas, steam room, and heated lounge chairs. It also seems to be the kind of spa that attracts ladies in groups so if you expect quiet in the saunas and steam room this may not be the place for you. Also the aromatherapy showers are open so if you plan to partake I'd recommend a swimsuit. It definitely makes the bathing ritual better for the more modest.

Yelp
As part of the opening promotions of the Chuan Spa at the Langham Hotel in the old IBM Building, a group of girlfriends and I signed up for 3 complimentary early morning tai chi classes on their plaza along the waterfront. The classes were a great way to start the day. After the 3rd class, the spa director offered us a tour of the spa and a 30 day complimentary pass. we went once a week for 4 weeks and loved it. The hotel is beautiful and the staff is gracious. There's a fully equipped workout gym. The trainer gave us a great overview and was generous with his time. The walls of the pool room are clad in an off white stone that echos the rest of the building, with ginkgo leaves carved into one wall. The showers are tiled with squares of labradorite. Tiny lights twinkle in a Milky Way above the pool, and the hot tub is, well, hot and bubbly. The pool water is purified with an alternative to chlorine, so that was nice. After the pool we'd head over to the spa area. There is a Himalayan salt sauna, an aroma therapy steam room that has tiny sparkly colored lights in the ceiling, and then a straight up aroma therapy room. They're designed to be used in that order, each one progressively cooler, so that one's body is set up for one of their treatments. There's an aromatherapy shower for a final cool down. The hair products in the showers and dressing rooms are all Moroccan Oil, which I love. There are heated stone lounge chairs to relax on before getting dressed. The staff was all very gracious. A day pass is a reasonable amount. The Chuan Spa was such a treat!

Yelp
I was pretty disappointed in the Langham Spa. The facilities are beautiful, clean and comfortable. However, my massage therapist was yawning loudly throughout the massage and answering text messages whilst massaging my back with one hand. Unbelievable considering the reputation of the hotel and the price of the services. I won't go back.

Yelp
This spa was great! my boyfriend and I are spending a weekend in Chicago and after a long week and early flight we thought what a better way to enjoy the weekend with a message and spa. Chuan took us immediately after calling and the service was amazing. Definitely recommend if you what top notch service and message!
