San Bernardino (and the Inland Empire in general) is known for many things in the food industry. The hard-shell taco was invented there (Mitla's Cafe) Taco Tia, and its successor Taco Bell came from there. And of course, as we all know, the very first McDonald's was located in San Bernardino.
"The Dino" (as it's often called) has fast food in its DNA; burgers in particular. Carrying on this tradition is Chubzies Burgers! Located in a plaza on the corner of Highland and Sterling in what used to be the Target Plaza (now Crazy Boss), Chubzies' storefront is very humble and unassuming, much like how they got their start.
You see, Chubzies began as a pop-up food vendor in 2020 that would appear in various locations in the I.E. like craft breweries, food festivals, etc. About 6 months ago, they got their brick-and-mortar location. The family and I have been here about half a dozen times now and let me tell you, it's been burger perfection every time! They specialize in what is known as "smash burgers", which uses a special process of cooking pressed-chuck burgers on a flat top grill at high heat. This process got its start in the Great Lakes region and sears the burger for extra flavor; often leaving the edges of the meat slightly crispy. Let me tell you, Chubzies has this method down to an art form!
Their menu is nothing fancy or too varied, and I'm okay with this. They keep their offerings simple and focus on quality. Double & Triple Cheeseburgers? Check. "Hot" Cheeseburgers? Check. Wubzinators?! Check. They even have a "Smashvurger" for those of you who are veggie-saurs!
You also need to check out their fries. Their regular fries alone are some of the best I've ever had! Perfectly seasoned! But they also have "Level 1-3" fries; with the Level 3 (with Grilled onion, American cheese, Wubzie sauce, smashed pattie, and medium fried egg.) being the most delicious and thrombosis-inducing.
The business is pretty much still new, so their drinks tend to be bottled/canned sodas and water for now. Seating is decent for as small a location as it is. But hey, there's nothing wrong with humble beginnings!
Probably one thing you'll notice upon visiting Chubsies is the friendliness of the employees and the positive energy going on in the back where the burgers are made. They are always friendly, positive, and upbeat!
The prices for their food is also quite fair. Not as cheap as In N Out, but not nearly as expensive as Five Guys. Their burgers and fries are also some of the best I and my family have ever had!
Plus, their little mascot, a Dinosaur (as in... "The Dino"), is also super cute!
If you want a good...no...a GREAT burger, Chubzies HAS to be on your radar! Try it, you'll be back over and over again!
