I was told this place is nothing fancy, just really good pizza and pasta, and it's been open forever. We were out for a later dinner, arrived at about 8:15 and the place was pretty empty.
I liked the mural on the side wall! I also like the street-view window into the pizza station.
You enter through the bar, which is carpeted and smells as such. Fine.
We ordered Italian nachos first. I thought it sounded like a lame dish but was pleasantly surprised at how good they were.
Our waitress was really nice, pleasant to talk to and attentive. I give her 5 stars because she did a good job.
Next we ordered the calamari, and the Gorgonzola tortellini with a meatball. Our food took forEVER to come out, and we were told that it was because a large party had come in just before us and they had all ordered steaks. Ummm...I have literally never heard that as a reason for food to take too long. "Because other people ordered different food before you" is not a valid reason to have to wait 40 minutes for fried calamari and pasta.
When the food came out, the pasta looked great. The calamari was entirely unidentifiable. Each piece was exactly the same size and shape, like tiny chicken strips almost. They tasted just about like chicken strips as well, which is to say, they tasted of nothing but fried batter, and BAD fried batter at that. The waitress was kind enough to take it away and remove it from our bill. We weren't jerks about it, neither was she, fair deal.
The pasta was really good though. The meatball was a questionable addition. It had a weird, pasty yet compact texture that I did not like at all.
I'll be back to give them a second try. They do a few things right, and service is good, and I honestly don't mind waiting longer for my food, as long as it's worth the wait.
