The Newest Restaurants In Chicago

"Congrats if you were one of the lucky 10 who won free food for a year from the second US location of this Taiwanese chain. Chunky Boss shares its space in Chinatown with Tiger Sugar and basically serves two things: fries and Taiwanese fried chicken in the form of sandwiches, tenders, or cutlets that look like supersized nuggets." - john ringor, veda kilaru

Google
Are you ready to try Chunky Boss's Jumbo crispy and juicy fried chicken? It's a full 1/2 chicken breast! We were invited to try their chicken before the Grand Opening, and here's what we ordered: Crispy Chicken cutlet, sweet potato fries and a drink. Sweet Chili Chicken Sandwich with sweet potato fries and a drink. Their chicken is soooo delicious, I could see myself ordering this all the time!

Google
Quick service with kiosk ordering. The chicken was pretty decent. Juicy and tender but the breading was just ok. The sweet chili sauce was good but the cutlet was thick enough you may want some kind of additional sauce that comes in small containers at an additional cost. Their fries were pretty good 👍 seating limited. You may or may not get a table on a busy day.

I visited Chunky Boss recently and tried their boba and famous peach ice cream. Both were absolutely delicious—the peach ice cream was creamy and refreshing, and the boba had a great texture and flavor. Their decor was fun and they had booths where you can order and technically not interact with anyone. However, the wait time was a bit disappointing. It took around 20 minutes to get our order, even though we were the only customers there, which seemed a bit long. Still, the quality of the treats made up for the wait. Worth a try if you have a bit of patience!

Google
I got spicy popcorn chicken. The chicken was a little dry but the tasted was okay. The "spicy" came from straight up loose chilly powder sprinkled on top which was very off-putting.

Google
Amazing chicken! Our sandwich was juicy and tender, and we ordered a cutlet as well. Both were excellent! Definitely tasted like the ones I had in Taiwan. Perfect takeaway food to go with your bubble tea. I’m very happy to have found this place. Thank you!

Google
Just the fried chicken steak. Great. Couple of seasoning options but not over the top. The price for it is standard. But the sides of chicken fries and popcorn chicken is NOT WORTH it. You get 3 little chicken fingers and like 8 popcorn chicken for the price of $8?? May as well get another steak for $10.

Google
7/10. No bathroom for customers, counter service with kiosk, inflated prices, not many options for a full meal, hard to eat all at once, comes out extremely hot and hard to hold. Tasty chicken though and unique concept. I got the spicy option and it was spicy. It was served extremely fresh, but it made it hard to hold for more than a few seconds as the container it comes in is too thin to protect from the heat. Found Chunky Boss on Instagram, recommended by Chicago foodies.

Me & my girlfriend decided to finally stop by after this place started going viral on social media. We got the combo that comes with a big piece of chicken, tenders and fries. The chicken is as huge as they say it is lol. One thing to note is that you have to pay extra for sauce and it comes in a tiny container. We found it difficult to dip the big chicken in the container and for having to pay extra for sauce it just wasn’t enough. The chicken is cooked fresh and hot and as a result be prepared to spend some time waiting for your meal. The food came hot and and the chicken was juicy. We also got some boba from Tiger Sugar which is located within the same area. We do recommend getting the combo if you plan to share food with someone to get more bang for your buck!

Yelp
[FOOD] For 10 bucks the chicken cutlet is GINORMOUS. I was kinda shocked how big it was. It was thick and crispy too. O: You can definitely eat this for two meals with rice. [SERVICE] Standard. [PLACE] This place shares a spot with Tiger Sugar. They have some tables for seating. [VERDICT] I like chicken cutlets so I am biased and will give this a 5 out of 5. Where else in Chicago can you find a giant chicken cutlet?

Yelp
Chunky definitely describes what you get! Cutlet is about the size of my face. Some seats inside though it can get competitive if it is busy. If you get sauce I might not recommend walking around with it since the sauce drips out the side. The sweet thai taste was okay - though the crispy cutlet is the way to go since you can choose the spice to put on it. The store does a good job telling you this, but please know that it takes time for them to cook them fresh. Do not expect it to be super fast food. Would add a star if the taste was a bit better on the sweet thai and I got a holdable carton that did not leak all over the place.

Yelp
Chunky Boss shares a space with Tiger Sugar and although there are two tables inside they will most likely be occupied by those waiting for pickup orders. There are several kiosks inside to place your order and there are separate pickup areas for Chunky Boss and Tiger Sugar. We went on a Saturday evening and it was pretty crowded and dirty. I peeked over and watched the worker preparing the food. I was appalled that he used the same gloves to handle the raw chicken and the packaging for the cooked chicken. Hubby and I both had the crispy chicken cutlet with cheese powder and ordered a popcorn chicken for our child. The chicken was crispy but could have been cheesier. I probably wouldn't come back just because I was disgusted by how dirty it was and poor food handling.

Yelp
A day in chinatown Chicago being the foodies that we are! Started with a meal from here & we shared the huge chicken nugget (we cut it up to share as seen in picture), fries, and a Boba drink from tiger sugar chicago all for around $17! It was super tasty and next time I'll have to try out their different sauces!

Yelp
This was a terrible experience. The place especially the Chunky Boss side of the establishment was dirty and unkept. The chicken is where the real nightmare began. Tough, greasy, and nasty. Was not sure if it was actually undercooked. I ate literally 5 percent of the chicken and threw it away. $13.00 tossed into the garbage.

Yelp
I had been looking forward to this and I am so very disappointed. My chicken sandwiches was undercooked and I hope I don't get sick from it. I took it back and they redid it and it still was bad. They have no other options for drinks other than Boba There were flies inside all over place, which is very annoying and troublesome

Yelp
The Chunky Boss is a convenient hub for your fried chicken and fries combo. I particularly enjoyed eating the sweet chili fried chicken and sweet potato fries as they are reasonably priced and a sizable piece!

Yelp
My friend really wanted to try this place for a quick bite since we were not that hungry. She ordered the chicken cutlet with spicy sauce, and I ordered the popcorn chicken with plum. The cutlet and the popcorn chicken both were huge portions, and the seasoning still lacked flavor. The service is slow as well since they share with Tiger Sugar and everyone orders from the kiosk.

Yelp
Chunky Boss in Chicago's Chinatown is all about chicken, and they do it exceptionally well. Located inside the Tiger Sugar storefront, this spot offers a variety of chicken options, including cutlets and sandwiches. Ordering is easy through the kiosk, and the menu is straightforward, focusing on delicious and juicy fried chicken available in Crispy and Sweet Chili varieties. You can opt for a combo that includes fries and a Tiger drink, or go for a single chicken cutlet conveniently packaged in a paper sleeve for easy eating. Personally, I enjoyed the Sweet Chili option. The ambiance is simple, with friendly service and fresh, made-to-order food that is definitely worth the wait. While indoor seating is available, the convenient packaging makes it a great choice for those on the go. Whether you prefer spicy or classic flavors, Chunky Boss is the go-to spot in Chicago's Chinatown.

Yelp
GET READY FOR CHUNKY The chicken is bold and delicious. It's the perfect bite. The chicken comes in cutlet, sandwich, chicken fingers, and chicken popcorn. It is also conveniently located inside of the Tiger Sugar store front. You can always order a combo meal that includes fried chicken, fries, and a Boba tea drink. The menu is really simple. They offer delicious juicy fried chicken. I love that I can order just a chicken cutlet in a paper sleeve. How cool is that? No bun just delicious boneless chicken. It comes in two varieties: Crispy and Sweet Chili. I loved both. The sweet chili really stood out for me. You can even enhance the fired chicken by adding powders. The available options are original, classic pepper, spicy, cheese, plum, makauy, or curry. I loved the spicy powder but I always like my food spicy. There's also dipping sauces available. The mango was my favorite. It went great with the popcorn chicken. The fired chicken sandwich is huge. The giant chicken breast just hangs over the edge of the bread. It takes several bites before you even reach the bun. It is this type of meat to bread ratio that I love on a sandwich. It comes with a honey mustard sauce which adds a nice flavor to the sandwich. This is the second location for this delicious Taiwanese fried chicken. The first US location is in NY. The chicken is locally sourced in the US and they pride themselves on servicing a juicy chicken breast. According to Chunky Boss, size does matter and according to their motto. It's Chunky or Nothing!

Yelp
Decent. Small space. Tasty food yet requires more quality control. Plum seasoning is great with the mango sauce. Service is fine for such a fast food busy place.

Yelp
Chicken was nice and hot! My one caveat was that we had to pay extra for a tiny cup of sauce. Since the chicken is so big, a friendly suggestion would be to increase the sauce you provide to your guests. Also it would be helpful to provide more napkins as well!

Yelp
I love food and Instagram but this product seems to only be for Instagram. Flavors were muted and texture was off. Fun concept but not for me. Fries were good and everything is fried to order.

La M.

Yelp
Overpriced but its a tourist trap so i get it. All the stars are for the actual nugget. Twas delicious. But be forewarned.... This place has like ZERO sauce for your newborn baby sized nugget. Staff was nice enough. Hands off because you order from a touchscreen kiosk. Crowded and room for maybe 4 groups of a few each to sit at small tables.

Yelp
Wanted to love this but the food tastes SO artificial. Like whatever powders they put on the fries and the chicken.. just taste like chemicals
google avatar

Buddy B.

Yelp
Overrated. Saw it on Instagram and wanted to try it. Very confusing to order at the store. Staff not helpful or friendly. Chicken cutlet was way too thick. It had good crunch though.

Yelp
I came here about 9pm with two of my friends. Tables were dirty first red flag. Its late tho so we give it a pass. we had seen tiktoks/instagram posts im sure you all have seen hyping up this huge delicious looking chicken..... well this is not a sponsored post like those ima be real with you. i ordered the sweet chili chicken sandwich, picture shows it fully covered and coated in sauce right?, but you get it and its hardly sauced. I got the combo which comes with boba and fries which is cool but they don't give you many choices for the boba, not the end of the world. Got the lychee black tea iced was mid nothing special not bad not great. Also got fries and holy sh*t did i wanna puke. Not gonna lie they were hard to keep down the sandwich itself was a little sweet cause they didn't put much sauce if they did it woulda probably made it worse cause the fries were 10x sweeter cause they are seasoned with sugar on them for some reason. If you weren't diabetic you'll leave here with type 2 and if you are diabetic prime that insulin pen or you'll leave in a stretcher. There is no balance of sweet and savory here its all sweet i ordered the mango special sauce because on the sign out side it said mango hot sauce no commas so i thought it would be just that a mango hot sauce but no it was just mango to add more sweet to your already too sweet meal. When of my friends actually ended up puking when she got back to her apartment it was so much. But back on track you order on kiosk workers were doing there own thing only time they interact with you is calling your name when your food is done. (Im not a big people person so i don't care too much about that but some people do so ill put it here). Chicken sandwich wasn't huge like they hype it up to be. It was decent sized tho. all the food was hot and fresh so they did that right but personally for me i would not recommend it unless you are into super sweet tasting food but China town has way too gems to be going here IMO. Hope this helps you all and remember this is just my opinion/experience maybe yours will be better, best of luck

Yelp
So I like the food but their owner is a petty person. I won their opening day contest of being one of the first 5 people to purchase on opening day, something that was repeated on day 2 as well. I was given a card with my name on it handwritten and they took a photo on my picture ID. I get a free meal once a week for 1 year. The first month and a half I show up and give them my ID and order my food. The owner is now making it mandatory "her own rule not corporate" to have to have the card with me when I come to order. The back of the card states that the only requirement is to have a valid ID and to present it when redeeming my weekly prize. She is trying to make it harder for me to redeem the prize having to have a card that is showing wear and only has been 3 months. She is trying to make it so I can not redeem this to I am sure save money on something that is clearly a corporate mandatory prize for all franchisees. Once I am done with my prize I am not going back.
