Animal Restaurant Closes Permanently After 15 Years on Fairfax - Eater LA

"This style of cooking grew to prominence in places like Montreal at Au Pied de Cochon and Joe Beef, and in London at Fergus Hendersons’s iconic St. John, but was a novelty at the time on this particular stretch in the Fairfax District." - Cathy Chaplin

I have had the richest experiences at St. John the Evangelist. It’s not just a church but a cultural hub where I’ve had the chance to hear everything from a classical ensemble perform to a rock band’s practice in the rented spaces. The community is truly dedicated to cultural enrichment and is open to all! Stay on the lookout for interesting opportunities, there‘s always something going on!

Truly a special place with a special community of people. Architecturally splendid, with a form of worship that elevates one’s spirit. The rich liturgy, incense, and music helps one connect with God in a unique way. And the diverse community of people at SJE helps make one remember the Church truly comprises of people from around the globe. I miss this place.

I attended the Vigil service yesterday night, the day before Easter. They had a rare baptism at the church and that is always great to see. The service started in the pitch black. A single candle is blessed and from that single candle, everyone has a lot candle. Slowly, the hundred or so candles are lit as the ceremony continues. After 22 minutes, all the candles are lit and the lights are turned on. Absolutely beautiful.

Before I attended St. John’s, unfortunately, I had a bad impression from the church I attended growing up. I was under the impression that most churches would be judgmental of me. That assumption was turned completely on it’s head once I stepped into Saint Johns. St. John’s really follows the spirit of the teaching of Jesus, everyone is welcome and loved. It’s a community full of diverse, loving and eccentric parishioners. The priests truly care about how you are doing. The organizational bodies work hard to keep the church going and the body of the church supports all of the wonderful events and keeps the community alive.

St. John the Evangelist’s is an unique, welcoming community of people dedicated to walking in the way of Christ. The congregation is one of the friendliest, diverse and most interesting group of people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. However long you’ve been attending St. John’s, you’ll be just as welcome as those who’ve been there for decades. The clergy are wonderful! Every priest at St. John’s is understanding, kind, and truly committed to serving all who walk through the doors. The church itself is beautiful, from its iconic red roof to the stained glass windows to the rood screen and the fantastic altarpiece depicting the ascension of Christ. The liturgy with all its rituals and music is a transporting rite, lasting one and a half hours. If you like a more traditional liturgy and an open minded community, check out St. John’s!

St. John the Evangelist has been so warm and welcoming to me that it's hard to express just how grateful I am. I've found faith, I've found friends, I've found what truly feels like God's house and the holy, loving celebration of His word and sacraments. The liturgy is elaborate and pretty long, which isn't for everyone—but it definitely is for me, and it might be perfect for you too. It's so full of meaning and of reverence that I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love the music, the building, the theology, and the people. I can't overstate just how many blessings this place has brought me since I walked in the door five months ago. There is nowhere I'd rather be.

This was such an interesting venue hall. The antique look of the space was quite charming and the staff on hand were very courteous and helpful. One of the staff even let me tour the whole building and gave me so much historical context on the building (in a non-preachy way). Overall great experience collaborating on events with this space and this welcoming community of folks.

A spectacular building combined with beautiful traditional Anglo-Catholic liturgy, and inclusive, broad-minded community. As I'm an Anglican priest at a different parish I can't usually attend Sunday mass at St. John the Evangelist, but I go there whenever my schedule permits (for special weekday masses and social events, for example) - basically my second home church. I know some lovely people there as well!

Yelp
I had not been here in ages but it´s about the same, very cliquish crowd, clergy with a holier-than-thou attitude and a fake smile. I stayed after the service because I had to use the restroom, and the dynamics is more or less the same, it´s run like an English country club, an older guy was checking me out and since I did not react to his cruising starred down on me and turned around, another came to say hello, invited me to a cup of coffee and since it was bloody cold outside I stayed for a little while and chatted for a while with a couple of people.

Yelp
St. John's is an Anglican church of the Anglo-Catholic variety. Plenty of 'smells and bells' as well as beautiful music for the Sunday 10:30 am Mass. A bit plain from the outside (with the exception of its identifying red roof) the church is a true gem inside. While not full on Sundays, it seems to have a community of friendly people. There is a nice coffee hour after the Mass. The sung Mass on Sundays lasted about 1.5 hrs. I found it to be a place one could feel close to God as they worshiped.
